Yeah. The more I think about it the brake mount could probably use some repair and filling before we try and flatten it. Everything else is just paint and a bit of sanding.
These "issues" have always existed with products, and real "mechanics" have dealt with them. It happens in all industries. Certain people on the internet are trying to steer us to certain brands by misleading.
Given Giant is a huge bulk producer of their own frames and others I’m not shocked that some of their product isn’t super well finished…but it is surprising that these things weren’t picked up prior to the custom colour way being applied. I’d send it back because that’s the true accountability following on from your video. I’d also say that unless it was bought direct no decent shop should have passed it on to a customer given the state of the fork, axle interfaces and brake mounts.
i have a 2022 revolt advanced carbon frame. I had to have the first frame warrantied because of a crack seat tube where the wedge sits. Got the second fame and its good so far. That being said i do like the bike.
Me too, my frame got replaced a month ago, now I'm on a 2023 Revolt Advanced Pro 0 frame. It's a known issue and can be checked, if there is a white triangle in the seat tube, those are the refined 2022 frames.
Quite a few people had cracked seat tubes when Giant came out with that stupid wedge seatpost clamping system in 2022. It's beyond me why they didn't change that design on the new ones. I also have a 2022 advanced and love the bike, no regrets.
I had a 2015 Revolt 3 (6011 alloy) which had exfoliation type corrosion under the paint at 4 years old - went to head office for inspection which took almost 2 months, eventually replaced free of charge by Giant.
Yes around where you called it at 2:20. Paint and finish overall looks like it was completed by an amateur hobbyist not a mainstream brand. Quality control obviously not observed. Very interesting video.
I would love to hear how this turns out. I have a 2020 revolt that has issues. My BB is oversized and the old frames have aluminum dropouts bonded to the frame. I now have paint bubbles all around the joints from galvanic corrosion. I haven’t talked to a giant dealer about it because I don’t have a reliable shop anywhere near me. And because giants warranty clearly states it doesn’t cover corrosion and if anyone other then a giant dealer works on the bike it voids the warranty. I stripped all the 105 stuff off my bike and rebuilt it with AXS.
Depending on where you live you may be able to make a claim under consumer protection law regardless. In the UK’s Consumer Rights Act, if you can provide evidence that it was faulty when you bought it (ie. they didn’t manufacture it properly to prevent corrosion) you can ask them to repair or replace it up to 6 years after purchase.
Always love these video & shake my head wondering why? For myself after 40 years of riding everything.... I stick now stick with the metal frames..steel/alum/titanium, Threaded BB's, Rim Brakes. I’m so glad you made this video. I found so many problems with my Giant TCR advance pro frame and been trying to find a solutions with one of their dealers and they just continue to ignore me. They are saying this is normal. I think my steer tube is cracked. They are saying don’t worry keep riding…. My rear calipers I can’t install a 160mm rotor because with adaptor it’s making the rotor rub…., but they keep telling me don’t worry. My bb is f up just like yours but they keep telling me it’s all good. My headset bearing area is undersized but they keep tell me it’s acceptable…. wtf.

Bought a brand new Revolt 1 in 2016, the frame was aluminium and the rear drop outs were out of alignment but because it was aluminium drop out alignment tools couldn't be used on it like you could on a steel frame. Had endless hassle with the Giant dealer trying to get things sorted. Got told by the dealer that I'd crashed and damaged the frame but I'd only ridden it for a few miles and noticed the gears weren't right.
Working at a bike shop I've learnt that I hate giant revolts. Specifically the revolt x that comes with 2 stage shifters. I don't know if there is a single revolt that I haven't needed to face the brake mount of
Bike-mech of 14years, last big shop I worked at we sold around 5 of those a day and 85% of them had a problem. If it wasn't the Flatmount (which it was 90% of the case) it was some other QC bullshit. As much as I like value for money but gooood damn... I had a alloy one in the Grenadine colourway with a fork that didn't even colour match the frame AT ALL. BUUUT - Giant themselves actually came in and talked about quality / pre-assembly problems we adressed and promised to make it better. Still... Horrific
Id just let Mapdec build a bike for me. I imagine 000s of cyclists including me have unwittingly bought poorly prepared/assembled bikes and ridden them creaks and all

Great video. I guess you do not have any immediate plans to be a Giant dealer, LOL. To be fair, my Giant Defy had a wobbly bottom bracket after six months or so. My local repairer in Thames Ditton alerted me. I had not really noticed….Giant replaced the frame after I went back to the dealer. No issue. But, I wasted a lot of my own time dealing with them, no one ever apologised and it took a long time to receive the replacement. I can see why some customers would just pay you to do the remedial work if they want to get on with having their bike built. I probably would too. The cycle industry does need to wake up. Giant are probably one of the better (or least bad) mass market brands too. Fascinating too that there is seemingly no comment from Giant. They must have seen this…..
Honestly, I do not know where to steer in current carbon frames and … Over the weekend I was offered a Domane gen 3 on a verybgood price, but after digging in I,ve realized how flawed that seatpost design is. ( i was so disappointed, as the geo of that bike could fit ne quite well, and I’ve liked the T47 in that) I started to look into a Defy. Now comes this one. How should i expect a solid creak free bike with these current standards, that rely on accuracy? (Flat mount, press fit, integrated seatpost, integrated headsets…) I was really into going for carbon, but i might just pivot to a Fairlight Strael, and spend the money on parts…
Quality control by Stevie Wonder. Send it straight back. Had a Bowman frame once with similar QC. Wished I’d sent the pile of junk back! Didn’t keep it long as knew it would be trouble.
Back in the day I imported an Intense Tracer when they first came out, it eat through BBs and suspension bearings, then when stripped down the BB shell complete with bash-plate mount had been welded at a twisted angle to the frame-took a lot of machining/corrective work before it all started to work properly-very disappointing, but then I started working for a tandem frame builder and realised these poor standards just seem to be the norm!
I’m guessing you never had the alignment table back in the day. Euro frames would always be checked for alignment then head tubes and bbs would be faced. Then on to the der hanger and done. Anywhere from 20 mins to an hour per frame.
Can't say I am surprised by this. I ordered a Revolt frame around 18 months ago, and the quality was very shoddy. As well as an obvious blemish in the paint on the down tube that you spotted immediately (don't know how QC missed it), the internals if the frame were very poor. Looking into the head tube there were sharp ridges and loos carbon fibres. Inside the BB was terrible. As well as sharp ridges, tenting, and loose fibres, there was a whole layer of carbon that had completely separated as there was no resin to bond it. There were also sharp ridges, tenting and loose fibres inside the chain stays. The brake mounts were also pretty shoddily finished. I sent it back for a refund and ordered the Vitus Venom Evo frame set, which was immaculate in comparison. Such a shame Wiggle went bust as it is a great bike and rides superbly (sold my Cervelo R3 as I stopped riding it in preference for the Vitus).
Could you do a grease video? Yes, grease! I just started using the Mobil XHP 222 and I'm already seeing how much better it is compared to the Finish Line overpriced one, it stay where it should even in the wet. There is DT Swiss who need the "Special" overpriced grease for the ratchet, is it needed? What about compatibility issue? How often should we re grease? What about assembly paste?
We sell al lot of orbea's. What we saw it that with the front fork drop out on the drive side the is an open hole for the true axle. Well when you look good when the wheel is in place( wheel is perfect centered) the wheel is crooked. Time trail ordu, orca, orca aero. All of them. Is it the drop out hole then? Thanks
Return to Giant and get it replaced preferably or at the very least have all the issues addressed. I would also ask Giant to build it and get you guys to check it
£1900 for a carbon frame that likely has a “should cost” in manufacturing of £400 and I am being generous. It should be 100% perfect. With deep respect to your considerable skill, the role of QCing it as an independent mechanic should not be needed. The frame should be perfect and not require any “minor tweaks”. The one you showed should be sent straight back. Paying that sort of money and then needing to pay a mechanic to “correct” it would be unacceptable in any serious professional industry. Chinese brands have a great opportunity if they can get their quality and price point right on a par with what they are doing to the car industry. The western cycle brands charge top dollar for bottom dollar quality.
Since I'm an industry veteran and former Giant guy; felt terribly sorry and ashamed... Even the frames I had purchased for some personal projects from HongFu were multiple times better once we compare those issues; I can say flawless...
Well. It is the job of the dealer to do the final QC before it meets the rider. We are not a Giant dealer. So someone failed. Also much of this is beyond minor corrections. Flakes of carbon should be a factory reject or a factory fix. Dealers wouldn’t have the tools to repair, just correct and align.
I’d of wanted to send back just before the flake, when you said you couldn’t get the facing tool on there. The front mount would have been a hard no as well had it come before the flake.
Bought a Giant Revolt Advanced Pro in 2020. After 1.5 years the seat tube broke. Clean Horizontale line break in the middle of the tube. Quite sure that it was a production fault. Took them 7 months to replace. Which made me even more angry.
I ride Revolt, very happy. Built it from the frame. Actually it was upgrade from aluminium - swapped everything on to a new carbon frame. No issues. I do pay attention to details after your videos 👌🏻 Also I saw other frames and made an unboxing. There must be a reason for the frame to be so bad. Never seen Giant this poorly made. Are you sure it's real Giant made? Looks like it not passed QC but skipped 😂
Just replaced the BB86 on my 2021 Giant Defy last night and the carbon shell was just like that Revolt with jagged edges on inside that ripped my gloves 😬
I've had 3 tcrs sl and defy pro, and none was as bad as this. I never had flaking carbon on the bb's All was very clean. They do have a slight ridge down the steerer, which seems to be common. Though it doesn't really cause issues for rim brakes as no cables through the headset as such. None had over spray like this.... was this ordered off aliexpress?😂
The rear brake mount is my i'm out point, since you've started doing some work to the frame Paul do you think Giant would try to get out of a warranty claim using that as an excuse?
Paul, I have a off-topic question for you. For a bike that is to be ridden in rain (next to the sea) which finishing is better? GLossy clear coat or Satin finish?
Have you received a 2021 alloy frame on the revolt? I've got no issues it's just got a stupid internal routing system that i'd actually like to convert into external purely on the basis that it's such a pain to fix stuff while working with it.
Good work! How old do you have to be to remember getting a steel frame from the builder, taking out the Campagnolo kit - chasing and facing, cleaning out threads, making sure the fork/crown/steerer tube was ready for the crown race, etc. all AFTER checking frame alignment and maybe correcting dropout and rear mech hanger alignment? With carbon is all that supposed to be done by the builder instead? Are ANY of these things perfect right outta the box? How do you determine whether to correct the minor flaws or reject the frame/fork? Finally WTF does someone spend all this time/money/effort on something baked-up by GIANT? A made-to-measure frame from an established and trusted artisan is one thing..but this...?
@@Mapdec Agreed. Good on you for telling the client NFW could chicken soup be made from this piece of chicken s--t! Again I wonder WTF the client spent this kind of loot on a frame made by the operation originally set up by Schwinn to make stuff cheaply? The paint and decals were probably the most costly part!
I bought a Giant bike last year to replace my 10 year old Giant. There was nothing much wrong with it but I fancied a change. As soon as I received the new bike I knew the quality wasn't even close to the old one. I also bought my 7 year old son a Giant at the same time and the quality on that was no good either. We still have the bikes but I'll replace them next year for something that's not Giant.
There is no doubt that frame has appalling finish work on both the carbon and the paint. You have a very high standard in your mind of what is the right level of quality control that every bike maker should achieve. You're getting worked up about pretty standard crap quality control, the fixing of which has been a part of what sets good shops appart from the hacks, and what justifies paying good money for a pro build on a new high-end bike for people that value that quality. Back in the late 70's and 80's, any pro level or custom bike we built got the BB chased and faced, the HS reamed and faced, and frame and dropout alignment checked and corrected. Some of the most highly esteemed handbuilt frames with the best finish work still needed the shop to finish those "loose ends." Some of the small local builders expected us to do the milling for them. It'll cost your poor customer more time and grief to warranty that frame and get another one back that is only slightly better than to fix this one and be done with it. That being said, if the local Giant dealer could do this stuff, the customer could probably get Giant to pay for it. They are pretty easy and generous when asked.
For sure. We weighed all that up in consultation. In fact we always do that and often the answer is for us to just fix it. This one was different. I felt it was so bad that it had to go back.
First question id ask, how do those defects compare to other frames within the same price catagory? Second question being if id sent it to you for QC, i want your opinion on if its worth building or trying our luck with giant to replace it first
The bike industry is a total piss take , except from a very few brands, not only do they produce very poor quality for the money, they also don't stand by their hugely overpriced and shoddy products, trying to get out of warranty claims etc. The price of the top end bicycles is now not far off new Superbikes. It only takes 1 second to see the vast difference in quality, precision, engineering and development in a Superbike compared to the toy like products the bike industry sell us.
Wondering what you charge to do this kind of quality control and make the necessary repairs? I understand it is dependent on how much work and time you have to invest, but is there some sort of flat rate to start?
I got a giant revolt frameset this past winter…..started with flaking carbon off the headset bearing race….then my mechanical rep brakes would not fit inside the dropped seat stays (not really there fault)….but then at the veeeery end I went to install the front derailleur and when you fastened it down the tail would kick out about 7-8mm. The front mount was riveted to the frame crooked! Nightmare…the giant rep ended up buying it back from the shop I got it from….oy😂
Public shaming is probably the best course of action. If it were mine I'd have Mapdec do the build along with youtube shorts for every little fix. On the root causes, I'd say all the problems came from one work station and poor final QC processes. Additionally, I'd take the designers to task for designing a bike that is difficult to fabricate correctly.
They do have the tool, but the cutter bit is too big for this flat-mount design. All flat-mount designs I've seen sit flush with the chainstay, so there's no spatial limit for the cutter bit.
Yeah. We have a couple. 2 issues. The position makes it very hard to get the tool placed accurately, and the other is the carbon looks so fragile. It would be ok with diamond cutter if I could get access.
It’s cool that you have stated and shown your viewers about Giant but if I’m not wrong aren’t nearly all bike frames coming from Asian countries? For those that think there euro bikes are actually Euro made or American made 😊
Nothing about the country. It all depends how much a brand is willing to pay the factory to QC, the standards they set and how active they are enforcing them.
4:00 maybe you should tell Time to do the same. The headset bearings they provide are crap already after 4000km, now I need to disassemble all my headset, pull the brake hose, etc.
Man, as soon as I saw that flap of carbon on the brake mount, that was it for me. That was the first thing I felt like shouldn’t be ‘fixed’ by a shop.

Prices are getting higher and higher, and quality just keeps dropping. How it came to this?
These "issues" have always existed with products, and real "mechanics" have dealt with them. It happens in all industries. Certain people on the internet are trying to steer us to certain brands by misleading.
@@anthonylarson7919What exactly do you see as misleading?
Given Giant is a huge bulk producer of their own frames and others I’m not shocked that some of their product isn’t super well finished…but it is surprising that these things weren’t picked up prior to the custom colour way being applied. I’d send it back because that’s the true accountability following on from your video. I’d also say that unless it was bought direct no decent shop should have passed it on to a customer given the state of the fork, axle interfaces and brake mounts.
It’s a factory Color, but only on the frame only.
i have a 2022 revolt advanced carbon frame.
So what did they QC?
Anything?
I’ll stick with my titanium bike, thanks. I’ll gladly take the kg hit just to never worry about probs like this.
If only that was true. It’s certainly less risky though.
My titanium gravel bike is 8.5kg. The revolt 2 is generally the same or heavier. It cost $3000 to build.
@@grahambleach I live in the US so I’m screwed. I am thinking about frame swapping it for something with a threaded BB.
Always love these video & shake my head wondering why? For myself after 40 years of riding everything.... I stick now stick with the metal frames..steel/alum/titanium, Threaded BB's, Rim Brakes. I build/assemble our bikes....I know retro grouch if you like but for me the juice of the bleeding edge was just not worth the squeeze. My wife & I ride internationally a few locations a few times a year & reliable + simple lets us enjoy the rides & that is what matter to us.
My headset bearing area is undersized but they keep tell me it’s acceptable…. wtf.
Defo not acceptable. Get a written 2nd opinion and go to trading standards.

@@EEKaWILL I can’t make this shit up, there is no customer phone number for giant in US. Unless I am missing something. This is unbelievable. They have direct to consumer option to buy but you can’t call them. I am even having hard time finding a manual. All I see is how to cut the seat tube. This is a brand new model with full integration and d shape steer tube but no manual. I have to spend hours trying to locate the damn manual. I honestly don’t want to shit on Giant, I like the bike how it rides. Nothing special just good bike, very predictable. I am just having hard time dealing with their dealers. @@bendardaniahomie. Do yourself a favor and google. I empathize with them giving you a crap frame, but it took me 5 seconds to find the Giant customer service number in the US.
@@georgeforeman89 let me be clear again. Giant US doesn’t provide a phone number on their website. Number you’re referring is from a forum called “pissed customer”.
I don't know if there is a single revolt that I haven't needed to face the brake mount of
Oh wow. 😮
Still... Horrific
I’d send that back
And wait another 7 weeks?
So, looks like the only thing that is perfect is the GIANT logo... Good job !
lol. True. The headset was ok.
Id just let Mapdec build a bike for me. I imagine 000s of cyclists including me have unwittingly bought poorly prepared/assembled bikes and ridden them creaks and all
All kudos to you for not doing like the rest of 99% on YT take their money from big suppliers and keep your mouth shut about the truth. Calling out a big manufacturer like Giant gets a 6 from me.
Get together your sh*** Giant and the rest of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves😅🎯
Seems to be one of many brands in the bike industry that sends out faulty goods and is happy to take the money.
Many folk will just build and encounter problem after problem and all they want to do is enjoy a bike ride.
Very professional video , love how you were complimenting the headset bearings and steerer tube thickness.
Thank you. 🙏
Feel like industry doesn’t need to care more than they currently do if they can still keep selling it as it is if people are still buying.
It's a shame for certain manufacturers who appear on here regularly that actually care. But for me, Carbon just isn't worth it.
@@jonburnell532 carbon isnt worth it? but your happy with poor alignment, poor welding etc.... Merida is the only brand id buy an alloy bike off(this includes specialized as they make them)
We bought 2 Alloy framesets for a bike only available in alloy, We measured them and they were quite far off each other in most measurements... alloy MTB's are rubbish.
@@MrSupermugen I wouldn't buy from a big manufacturer either. I want someone who is passionate about their craft to build me a bike, rather than another sale for a shareholder. Custom steel for me.
Honestly, I do not know where to steer in current carbon frames and …
Over the weekend I was offered a Domane gen 3 on a verybgood price, but after digging in I,ve realized how flawed that seatpost design is. ( i was so disappointed, as the geo of that bike could fit ne quite well, and I’ve liked the T47 in that)
I started to look into a Defy. Now comes this one. How should i expect a solid creak free bike with these current standards, that rely on accuracy? (Flat mount, press fit, integrated seatpost, integrated headsets…)
I was really into going for carbon, but i might just pivot to a Fairlight Strael, and spend the money on parts…
2:17 - that’s getting sent back 😇
Quality control by Stevie Wonder.
Ah. When bike shops were bike shops.
@@Mapdec more like bike companies have always made shops do their dirty work and act surprised when we find shit
I just can’t stop shaking my head.they better see this and fix their workers and qc
The DT Swiss special grease does work best in stopping the ratchet sticking.
Did you see the holes inside the seat tube. Carbon seems not dense.
Wow, that's crazy. I'd not even be happy if this frame costed £400
Send it back. Too many questions on key parts of frame. Metal frame for off tarmac for durabilty.
I would also ask Giant to build it and get you guys to check it
Was Stockton Rush employed in the QC department ??
Do the brands just consider it “your job” to get those finishes spot on?
Would they just say “that’s within tolerance”?
@@Mapdec there’s the key term: Minor corrections
Shocking fair play to the customer very good video
I’d of wanted to send back just before the flake, when you said you couldn’t get the facing tool on there. The front mount would have been a hard no as well had it come before the flake.
Bought a Giant Revolt Advanced Pro in 2020. After 1.5 years the seat tube broke. Clean Horizontale line break in the middle of the tube. Quite sure that it was a production fault. Took them 7 months to replace. Which made me even more angry.
I ride Revolt, very happy. Built it from the frame. Actually it was upgrade from aluminium - swapped everything on to a new carbon frame. No issues. I do pay attention to details after your videos 👌🏻
Also I saw other frames and made an unboxing.
Paul, good job detailing a bad job. And for $1900 ? just wow!....Can you imagine what they get away with on complete bikes ?
Wow , I have no issues with my 2015 Giant Carbon xtc I still happily ride. No issues with frame at all.
I wouldn't buy another Giant. I had issues with the BB hole. Just picked up a Lauf and on close inspection things seemed to be QA well.
The rear brake mount is my i'm out point,
since you've started doing some work to the frame Paul do you think Giant would try to get out of a warranty claim using that as an excuse?
I'm getting scared, I just ordered the same frame last week I'm curious to see how this turns out...
Paul, I have a off-topic question for you. For a bike that is to be ridden in rain (next to the sea) which finishing is better? GLossy clear coat or Satin finish?
Glossy will always look better in the long run.
Serviced a couple, and built a couple of TCRs, propels.... They were never near perfect. Paint overspray was a theme across all of them
Was going to order a tcr pro frameset, think i'll spend the extra on a look 785
Oh. Give us a week. We have something interesting coming.
@@Mapdec interesting🤔
4:28 carbon bb flakes - at that point it's in the box and heading back
Have you received a 2021 alloy frame on the revolt?
I would always argue that the business that accepted money from the end user is the one with ultimate responsibility for quality.
£30 is our minimum charge. Repair work can sometimes be over £100.
@@Mapdec ,...Thank you! Sounds like a very good deal. I wish I lived closer to your shop, I would happily pay this.
Hate it when that happens
Public shaming is probably the best course of action. If it were mine I'd have Mapdec do the build along with youtube shorts for every little fix. On the root causes, I'd say all the problems came from one work station and poor final QC processes. Additionally, I'd take the designers to task for designing a bike that is difficult to fabricate correctly.
Don't you have a facing tool for brake caliper mounts? It would simplify resolution for these 8ssues

Yes. It’s a factory paint job. The paint seems to be keeping the carbon from just flaking away.
I tapped out when I saw you holding a giant frame.
Holy crap though that fork is terrible. How can that be sent out.
At that point, you are just paying for paint and stickers.
Just send it back! It amazes me how people purchase these frames with an expensive price tag and just accept as is!
Send it back to Giant
