I usually add 4" or so to each length otherwise I end up with an 8" or so leader due to the leader material used in tying the knots. Good video!
Came across your video nice job . Its interesting when you mentioned it works for trout and you are right on , it works for everything I use that formula even in a lot of my Spey setups . And if you fish a bunch it’s way more economical then buying pre made floral carbon leaders . Go fish :-)

Good video......What do you use to make your leader? Fluorocarbon line or actual fluorocarbon leader material? Have you used a loop to loop knot at the tippet section to save line when tippet gets to short? Plan to try it out this weekend..
+Kyle Wilson I use Fluorocarbon unless it is super shallow. Fluorocarbon sinks way faster than mono. Occassioally, mono works better, but 99% fluoro. I dont use a loop to loop at tippet, but I do tie either a perfection loop or a surgeons loop at the end of the leader and make one good connection from the fly line to another Perfection loop. I conect the leader loop to loop. This way I only have to tie one nail knot all season
Saltwater Experience won't the flourocarbon not be good enough to cut through the wind unlike a hard mono?
Is there a good rule of thumb for the maximum line diameter change between sections when tying fly leaders?

used flurocarbon the entire leader? does it make a difference to only use flurocarbon at the end tippet section?
Denes Szakacs Yes, Fluorocarbon sinks much faster than mono so I use Fluoro in deeper water. In really shallow water, I find that an entirely mono leader works better
But as far as laying out the line there shouldnt be much of a difference between the two?
There could be a slight difference in stiffness, but that is it
Fishing anywhere there is lots of marine growth in the water. All those knots will be a nightmare.
Wish this gentleman would have given us diameters and materials of the line and not just say “50lb” this info is kind of useless as is.
