I forgot to ask Dave while heckling him.. while all that being said. Should I leave my maxima chameleon and maxima ultra green at home and go to salt water specific stiffer leader material?
Also me having to come down for work to the area. Dave was super helpful and patient helping to transition my many years of trout game into the fascinating world of what y’all have going on. Just hope y’all bring me some ham sammiches after I buy a flats boat and start living behind Walmart.

I use With a 8wt line. 5’ of 40# Mono butt section to 3’ of 30# Mono mid section and 3’ of 20# Fluoro tippet . Done.I believe what’s most important is 50 percent of your leader build should be the butt section. 5’ is perfect for wind or no wind. Great transition.

What knots do you use for transitions?

Thank you for your advice. I fly fish in salt water here in the UK and construct a tapered leader similar to the one described although I do not always need to use a higher breaking strain bite section due to the species targeted. Hopefully, coming to your area in October/November to sample the fishing and will tie u some of your preferred leaders as a starting point. Thanks again.

For my saltwater leaders, if I don’t tie my own. I use nylon 9 or 10 foot tapered nylon leader then 2 or 3 foot fluorocarbon tippet . I want the nylon to be high on top of the water to avoid dragging it close to the rocky sharp bottom. That avoids a lot of snags when I am stripping or even just walking with leader dragging behind stalking the flats here in Maui . We do not have much sand flats at all . Mostly broken sharp coral. All you need on tippet is about 2 to 3 feet of it to help keep the fly from bouncing to high from the bottom while stripping. And the last thing about the nylon , it makes it really really easy to pick the line an fly up and drop it again . I’m just referring to really chasing the silver bars( bonefish) . Which is the only fish we have to stalk here in Hawaii. Just my personal preference. Rock an roll . 🎸🎣 The Armadillo

May I ask what type of knot do you use from your mono to the fluoro tippet? Thanks 🙏

Great video and very clear. I’ve had a nail knot fail by stripping the coating off the fly line. Do you put a locking knot like a couple of half hitches after the nail knot to better secure it? I now use an Albright knot for fly line to leader connection which works well for me.

I tend to cover them in super glue or UV resin, and I’ll tie two. Three for the 11 and 12 weight tarpon rods to bomb proof it. But half hitches like you said should accomplish a more secure connection as well

A blood knot from your mono to the fluoro tipped is it strong enough? Cause I find that my blood knot from mono to fluoro not strong enough. What’s your second knot of choice? 🙏 also another question, do you use a class tippet at all?

Question is: Do we even need a tapered leader for Salwater?
Here in New Zealand, for Saltwater, most of us don't use a tapered leader at all. Just a regular Fluoro leader.
Yes, not "ideal" for transfer of energy but you quickly learn to snap stop that wrist on forward so the line unrolls.
For a long time, I was buying an then making my tapered leaders until I gave up and can't see much difference

Hey DaVinci FPV, the answer to that question is definitely yes for us in the Tampa, FL Area. You just can’t turn a fly over very well without a proper tapered leader at 70+ feet, especially if there’s wind. If you do turn it over, it usually slaps the water extremely hard and spooks fish.

Very good simple information.. still new and I only fish salt bay on my kayak in mostly 10 to 15 foot of water.
Getting a 7wt salt set up..
what's a good fly line for get to that deep and a good formula to make my leader/tippet mostly using 10 to 8,6 4 size hooks using small clourser and shrimps with small dumbell eyes weights
Some say can just use a tippet about 4 to 6 foot long and that's it 🤔
I'm fishing mostly blind cast at times but also don't want to smack the fly lure on the water..

Hey JDM! Something like a Cortland Ghost Tip should work well tailwatershop.com/products/cortland-ghost-tip It has a clear intermediate tip. Or something that will get down even further is the Cortland Clear Intermediate Tropic Plus tailwatershop.com/products/cortland-clear-intermediate-trop-plis Fluorocarbon in your leader would definitely help the fly get down more if those lines aren't enough. Please don't use a single piece of mono or fluoro. Try the scale test and pull with your 7 weight. You'd be hard pressed to see 9 or 10 pounds before the rod breaks. One shark or unexpected huge fish, and see ya later $100 fly line

@@tailwaterflyshop oh yeah we also got sharks and bat rays that i dont want to catch lol...thanks ill keep that in mind need to make a break off line ..not trying to lose a 100 fly line ..also trying not to break a 500$ rod

First I never use fluorocarbon, its breaks too easy at the knot. Other wish I use a similar method. Except I use a I use a 5,1,2 1. I don't feel that I need as long a transition piece, and a like a longer class section. In Teaxs fishing for Redfish we Don't need a bite tippet so we just use the class to fly and I make my butt 6ft.

Was kinda shocked to see average length leaders being used. Even in the spooky trout streamer game I usually have just a 6’0 leader with maybe a foot or two tippet if I’m using fly line. Besides that it’s usually just 20lbs maxima with a tight line setup for the smaller ones. Would have thought all the tourist would have acclimated y’all’s fishes to be less spooky. Been finding out the hard way that’s not the case. After several days of only catching puffers and getting needlefish all riled up this ole ignorant trout man is coming around though. Also convinced that tying some of the baitfish patterns y’all use there is far more enjoyable than having to pump out a bunch of #16 to #20 nymph and dry patterns of many variations.
