  • How I Tie a Leader For Fly Fishing
    In this video I show you how easy it is to tie your own leaders for fly fishing. This is the basic leader I use for fly fishing for bass and redfish. This formula can be modified for different conditions to fish for everything from small freshwater fish to larger saltwater fish.

    Thanks for the video, I mostly fish for large mouth bass, it seams like some video I watch on making leaders they make it complicated. So thank you for keeping it simple.

    After teaching myself how to do this pre UA-cam, it's nice to see I wasn't that wrong. I mostly fish lakes and run 40, 25, 6lb for poppers. They never see it coming 🤣

    Alvin, I am new to fishing and have now watched about 50 of your videos for redfish fly fishing. Equipment, technique, flies, etc. and wow these are all fantastic. I never knew that fly fishing could be so involved and now know it really appeals to me. It is a pleasure listening to someone that not only knows the subject matter but is excellent at teaching the information. I learned so much and feel much better prepared to get started with the correct equipment. Thank you for spending the time in making and posting all the great information. I look forward to buying, setting up, and practicing so I can start catching some redfish here in Pensacola. Keep up the great work.

    Nice , when you end up tying a lot of leaders throughout the year this is the thicket. I have a 9’ leader brain . Rods 9’ divided by 3 . When I get into trouble is with a 7.5’ rod :-) thanks for the video

    Great video as always! Making leaders has saved me so much money over the years. I'm up here in the northeast fishing for stripers a lot. One trick I learned from a guide friend for inshore/weedy situations is to leave a little tag end on the surgeons knot to help keep a few of weeds off the fly!

    Hey Alvin. Appreciate your videos! There are a lot of videos on so many things, and hundreds if not 1000’s on fly. Fishing. But really like yours in TEXAS Bass and Redfish!!! You are very good communicator and instructor. Keep up the good work! If you are ever in upper coast, SE Texas…. Not quite Louisiana come fish on Sabine lake and Keith Lake!!!

    Nice. What I like to do is to attach the tippet with a loop to loop OR a small solid ring. This way I don't lose a bit of the taper section everytime I need to tie another tippet.

    Glad to see this been putting together some stillwater kit to target a variety of species so having a nice bass leader is helpful to pair with my trout stuff.
    For California striper in the Delta I run level 20lb or 30lb fluro to my sinking lines so no need to get fancy there.

    Thanks for the great straight forward tutorial.
    I've noticed with leaders that increased stealth is usually done with longer and/or lighter tippets.
    In my conversational fishing I use fluorocarbon to go stealthier.
    Are there reasons fluoro isn't popular in fly fishing.

    Great video my flyfishing, Brother! What's your take on "hard" mono vs regular mono vs fluro? Honestly, I usually get whatever quality stuff I can find at the cheapest price. The bass here in Oklahoma don't seem to care. I'm sure there may be certain situations that call for each.

  • @smshroyer

    Excellent video. One suggestion would be to mention the diameters of the leader material instead of just the pound test. I was surprised you were using a 60 lb test butt section until I looked up the diameter of 60 lb Superstrong Plus and saw that it's only 0.025 inch compared to 0.024 for 40 lb Maxima.

    so can you do any pound of line for the leader? like can you do 20/10/5 or is it better to do heavier line?

    Thank you for the great videos. I am a beguinner and have a question. You are using 60/40/20 pound tippet material to make the leader for 7/8 line. There is a site from New Zeeland and the Orvis site that use 30/20/15 for 7/8 weight line. Is there a benefit to using the heavier first two sections? Longer cast?? Thank you and Happy new Year

    OK. So I have tied leaders along the same lines as laid out in your video using Maxima Ultragreen mono. And I have to say that I did not like the way they rolled out. These were 9ft leaders between 2x and 4x for bass and trout. Recently a colleague showed me how to make twisted, not furled, leaders. So far I very much like the way these case both dries and streamers. They also do not have memory in them since part of the process is pulling the mono straight before starting. Question: have you tried this technique and if so what are your thoughts/comments? Many thanks.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  Рік тому

      That Maxima is pretty stiff. I used to use it for shock tippets or but sections, but I think you might need something a little more supple for the mid section. I haven't tried twisted leaders.

  • @Cousin_Gregg

    Forgive me if you’ve talked about this before, but will you kick me off your boat/raft if I show up with a micro-swivel or tippet ring on my leader? I’ve had the swivel on my sinking setup for a little bit - makes fly changes easy but is a grass/weeds/algae magnet.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 роки тому +3

      I have had a few people use tippet rings. No problem for me, although I did see one break once. I use split rings on some of my flies, so pretty much the same thing.

  • @4492573
    @4492573 Рік тому

    I like a longer butt section. For me. Please try with a 8wt line. 6’ of 40 pound to 3’ of 20 pound No mid section or transition section. Butt section and tippet. 9’ leader. 6 feet of 40 pound Mono for the butt section then blood knot to a 3 foot section of 20 pound fluorocarbon. We catch allot of Reds and bass with this set up. Alvin that formula turns the large flies over great and larger terrestrials too. Please give it a try. Thank you. Cory.

      Is this a nylon material? If so, how can I expect it to react in the water, I surf fish a lot with my 10wt spey road of the southwest coat of louisiana. I've been using mono butt and floro tippet. It's fine, but it just doesn't turn over like my 5wt spey road or my 8wt single hander, and I think it has alot to do with how hard the material is , being I used 50lb and 30lb with my 10wt. Hope this makes sense.
