One of the best metal songs ever... it has the exact balance of all core components and one of the best lyric in metal history, containing a perfect "trident,"
    meaning, symbolism AND rhyme.
Anyone who ever written even a halfassed song know one of these three can be tricky, incorporating two is hard and successfully using all three is damn near impossible,

When she started talking about the interlude being the high and then crashing back into chasing said high, I had to stop the video and load up the song to listen to it again. In all my years of listening to this album I have never made that connection and it's so very true. **bowing down to Sori**

      @j.p.lovecraft1826 6 років тому +16

I agree with the OP. For me, this is the greatest metal SONG ever. I was asked to pick a song for this very reason in a metal group im in. I thought about it for a while and came to this conclusion using metrics that came to me as I analyzed the song. Now, I understand the parameters i used are not what works fir everyone and some may even have many more but to me, its like this:
Date of publication: the inception and heyday of thrash metal.
      Influence: obviously very influential.
Title of the song: very metal! And worthy of an album title as well to go along with that epic album artwork inspired by the title.
Subject matter: addiction, obedience and destruction! Very metal!
Lyrics: catchy, memorable , dark and contains metaphors/analogies
      Music:
      Epic intro: check
Down picked, speedy main riff: check
      Memorable riffage: check
      Headbang inducing: check
      Fist pump inducing chorus: check
Scream along chant part (Master!Master!) : check
      Slow melodic clean break: check
      Harmonized dual guitar melodies: check
Stylized guitar dubs (volume swells, reverse guitars): check
Ripping, fast and memorable guitar solo: check
      Slow memorable guitar solo: check
Melodic and heavy change up: check
Chant along factor (post solo Master! Master!....Laughter! Laughter!): check
      Fast paced drums: check
Pounding, almost tribal drum part: check
Solid , reinforcement bass line: check
Then as a bonus: it ends with wicked demented laughter!
Now, i know it’s subjective but to me , this song has it all!
Its a bit outplayed at this point because we’ve all heard it a million times and it always comes up in convos about the greatest metal but ironically its reached that cumbersome point because of how awesome it is in the first place.
Im sure some great songs came before and after MOP but to deny its excellence and staying power would be uncivilized.
Metallica hit the nail on the head with this one, whether by accident or careful thought I don’t care. Im just glad to exist in a universe and time where i got to experience this cut!
Bonus nugget: when i was young, that middle harmonized guitar melody blew my mind. It was a game changer. A couple if years ago at a Metallica concert, both james and kirk met up right in front of me, three feet away from my face and played that part. I had come full circle and it was fantastic.!!
My favorite band in the whole world isnt even metallica, its Pantera but damn....these boys laid it down on this song and even better, this album!
      In madness you dwell.....

I remember that in 4th grade I got into a lot of trouble because the Christian school I went to had Wednesday sermons and the principal used this song as way to prove that music was a form of the devil. Little did he know that I being the lover of that album was actually carrying the cassette tape in my book bag and defiantly stood up during the sermon and corrected him about what lyrics were actually saying... I ended up washing the gymnasium walls for that entire week as punishment for my defiance and for having “Devil” music on the school property....

In recent news, a high profile "minister" has been asking his "flock" to help him raise money for a state of the art private jet. In talking to another high profile "minister" the second minister said "when I get on a commercial flight, everyone on this steel tube is drug adled. I feel like I am getting on a plane with a hundred or so Demons..."
... I thought "Isn't that what Jesus would want them to do? Isn't that what you're supposed to Do? Or do you preach only to people who have heard you several times already?" and "God doesn't need a jet airplane. He doesn't need you to have one. He needs you to walk in the path of Jesus".

Wow! I'm blown at so many not noticing what the meaning to the 3rd and 4th interlude's and the transition between them painting the picture of the High, Coming Down, Jonesing for more, Getting your Fix and then ODing. I automatically recognized it. That's part of what makes the song so brilliant!

Metal brought me to Christ, as most good metal ultimately reads as a cautionary tale against the subtle, seductive forces of darkness. All of the "Metal" kids I grew up with are now on the Right, if not religious.

I am so happy right now. "Master Of Puppets" is one of my favorite songs of all time and so I thank you for reacting to this sheer masterpiece. I've played guitar for 21 yearrs and I still have to warm up before playing it, since I play the way Metallica does, with downstrokes and all. I love the solemn middle-section. Finally a kindred soul that sees the brilliant storytelling of this song! The first part is an addict who seeks the drug, then he gets it and the melodic part is the fleeting high, and after it ends the addiction comes back again but the next time the addicts takes the drug he overdoses on it and dies. Thats why you hear the laughter at the end because the master is happy he finally got the addict and he goes to hell (hell is worth all that). Good job Sori you got the song from the first listen! There are fans who have never thought of it that way and their minds get blown when I show it to them. That right there is the mark of a good song, a song you can listen hundreds of times and still find something new about it.

    • @ivangushkov3651

Goat yes after the melodic part the high ends, and he starts craving the drug again. He dies right at the very end of the song, when he has gotten his fix but overdoses. So the songs is, in my opinion, divided in 4 parts: craving up until the melodic part, high in the melodic part, even stronger craving after the melodic part and then OD and death at the very very end when you hear the master (cocaine) laughing ;)

    • @ivangushkov3651

yo mo People focus too much on the lyrics, when the actual story is told through the music. The lyrics are just there to give you context and get you up to speed, but the music and transitions within the song are what actually drive the story forward. Its a very cool lens to view music through.

    • @DEFKNIGHT
      @DEFKNIGHT 6 років тому +2

Ivan Gushkov Agreed. I almost wish they'd listen twice. So they can just listen to it and the second time so they can analyze it. Especially with the acknowledged greats. Analysis right from the jump isn't the most pure way to hear a song for the first time. Who does that anyways? I mean Normally that's not the way you usually hear a song for the first time. You take away that first time emotive energy that comes with hearing something for the first time. You're distracted by the reading and not feeling the music wholly, you know?

Surely *that* isn't the case? Also, who's "Vinnie"??? *Bonus:* Using capital letters at the beginning of your sentences increases your credibility, even if we give any merit to the stupid statement that "This is Internet! They weren't millionaires at this point. No radio play except for a few local LA/SF stations. All word of mouth. @Monsters of rock in '88 they opened before 4 other bands, with Van Hagar headlining. They were still nobodies, until 'One' or 'Enter Sandman' that's when they got big. I saw them with Cliff 3x's. I heard 'Kill 'em All' in '83 and was hooked.

Also My favorite song is definitely “ORIAN”, it’s an instrumental on the MASTER OF PUPPETS ALBUM written by their bassist Cliff Burton who died during the one of the master of puppets tours, the bus some hit black ice and then flipped and crushed him. Many think he is the best metal bassists who ever lived. It’d be so amazing if y’all could react to it. Thanks for the great videos!!

Next from Metallica you have to do something from And Justice for All. And Justice for All is a badassed Album... period, bass missing and all.
Blackened is one of the most killer tracks Ever.
One, brought Metal to the masses in a way that as far as Metals exposure to the masses is concerned, is probably the single most important song in the history of Metal.
Eye of the Beholder... Those lyrics are sooooo fucking relevant today it's almost prophetic and it's a fucking badass song.
Shortest Straw is a killer track. The whole fucking Album is killer.
I would challenge you to find any modern Metal act and song for song match their very best album to And Justice for All. There are maybe a handful that you could legitimately compare to And Justice for All. The one track on it, To Live is to Die, is the only weak song (in comparison to the rest) as it is the tribute to Cliff Burton, but it rolls right into Dyer's Eve which is just an Awesome closing song and is one of my favorites on that Album if I had to choose a couple.
We aren't even considering Master of Puppets, the greatest, which just crushes everything.

    • @DEFKNIGHT
      @DEFKNIGHT 6 років тому +1

TheSuperSaiyan97 weak in comparison to brutality of the rest of the Album. Musically it's good. Not great. It's moving, because of the subject matter. But I just wish it soared a little more. But it was good. It's just the weakest song on the album, in my opinion. Better than many metal bands best though. And certainly better than many metal bands best albums weakest song.

    • @DEFKNIGHT

TheSuperSaiyan97 a made a little edit reflecting that. Came out wrong. Didn't mean it was a weak song. Just the weakest among the great.

I first listened to this song when I was in my teens, I'm 24 now. I never really focused on the lyrics just on the instrumental. It's only very recently that I started to give the lyrics any attention and I've been blown away by how deep and impactful they are. It honestly elevated this song to a whole other level for me. Hetfield is a lyrical genius.

Sori is ON POINT. This song is like those magical MATH equations which looks like a beautiful puzzle at the end. At the first part of the song the addict is at the beginning of his/her drug usage, not the first time he/she used it but still the drugs didn't completely take over his/her life. Then, after he/she crawls back to the "master" and takes it into his/her system, he/she gets high and above which is the calmer, mellow, beautiful, relaxing, soothing part which reflects what he/she's feeling while over the clouds. Then when it starts to creep back (as Vin says) the addict has a brief moment of realization that he/she's getting addicted to it, desperately tries to rebel against the master with those lyrics but he/she can't resist any more and quickly gives in to it with the "fix me" line where the crazy solo comes. That symbolizes his/her regret and anger to himself that he didn't succeed, this time no relaxing, no soothing because even if he/she's high, there's a war within his/her head or soul. When the solo ends the master riff gradually comes back because now it completely conquered his/her life, now his/her life is out of season. The drugs are the absolute master, he/she is fully addicted and there's no turning back hence the laughs at the end...

Nice stuff there guys, you conversing bout addiction, power, and so on..
especially in the end, 34th minute around
where sori talks bout naivety, and how very few get out alive, or Really change their mind, and their lives..
I would call that everyday Heroes.
    People, that despite all,
no matter the circumstance, the addiction, the master that keeps on calling 'em
They resist. They find the inner strength, even where noone believes in them
    And overcome everything and anything.
That's when the animal human, transcends to whatever daimon, or divine
approaches a bit closer to the concept of our Gods.
Of whatever Higher power, one is trying to grasp, and follow on the path of Virtue (Αρετή)
    .
Thank you for the effort and the hours.
Hail to those Heroes.. the Age of Heroism is coming back, imo
