I link to think of MGSV displaying Ocelot's true personality: a humane, loyal, and compassionate man. It's very heartwarming to see him loyally stand by Venom and Big Boss throughout the story. I also like to think that he was torn up inside as he adopted the duplicitous, self-serving, sadistic bastard we see in the rest of the games. Any thoughts, fellow commenters?

He tortures and possibly rapes Meryl. He experimented on people's lives to test the SOP system, causing many the death or psycological trauma. He isn't a compassionate man by any means. It's also implied that he brainwashes the people you kidnap in the FOB missions. After Big Boss defeat, Ocelot became far more ruthless and with no sense of moral.
I think Kojima like so many creators of anime and comics, has tons of ideas, some great, some bad. And like most anime and comic books, they don't know how to filter the ideas so they use all of them, and they keep adding layers of conflicting ideas until there's a convoluted mess. That's what happened to MG. The story doesn't make sense, every character has multiple back stories and there's so much goofy shit that the games equally as corny as it is cool
Just so everyone understand what Ocelot means about the doublethink statement, it's a reference to 1984 where you believe in two truths simultaneously. That's the 2 plus 2 equals 5, the character in the story knows it really equals 4 but simultaneously believe it's 5 because that's how they've been trained. Ocelot here is using that to apply to his self hypnosis - he will genuinely believe Venom is Big Boss on his dealings with him while at the same time knowing he isn't
Yeah. In psych terms, its called "Cognitive Dissonance." Like how a super religious person can root for the death penalty even though most religions are against killing. 1984 was a great book; Orwell was quite intelligent to write a book that shows the extremes of government and physiological manipulation are very linked. Funny too, because in our current society, *we the people,* are big brother: You do something extreme or illegal, another citizen will record it n their phone asap and it will be in the news, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, etc.
You don't need to do that on your first visit to Mother Base. Just shoot him when you meet him. He has some things to say: A bit japanese. I cannot write down. "That won't work on me I had Drug Immmmuuunniittty traaaiinnniiiiinng." "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo, La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" "two plus two equals five." "Stop it." Stuff like that.
+TheAwesomeDarkNinja Boss knew Zero cared for him. Remember, the truth tapes were sent from the real BB to Venom. That means BB had listened to them before handing them over to Venom.
Yes it is. In the game you receive the truth tapes after Venom find out about BB. They were most likely given to him by Ocelot, who by the way was the one who recorded most them.
As for the tapes Zero and Paz recorded? They were most likely given to Ocelot by Zero as a way of explaining himself and to atone for his past actions. What saddens me was that Zero never got to personally apologize to BB when he was awake. Which as why he recorded that last tape in the hospital.
"wake up soon old friend, time is running short" damn I always thought zero had hatred towards big boss but when he said that it just shows there was a deep friendship there between the two.
Zero was quite the complicated fellow, but in the end he seemed to mean well. Him and BB Had different interpretations on how to achieve the same goal, and realized their mistakes. Great story.
funny how big boss was disgusted by the clone boys, but in the end of MGS4 he hugged snake and called him his son. guy really changed after all he went through
It's because he knew they were nothing more than tools created by Cypher and used by the Patriots. It disgusted him because he was fooled into being a pawn, the children were born as pawns. Which except for Solidus he was right. But in the end, once David rebelled and finished Big Boss's fight against the Patriots he knew he wasn't merely a tool anymore, but a soldier and a son.
46:40 "Rain approaching" No, I don't think so.... ...No, it's raining all right. Interesting to note that you can hear Zero pat Big Boss before saying "Wake up old friend" and that he stands up and doesn't walk away for a few seconds. Zero is fucking quality.
+Unknow0059 # Big Boss and Zero had their differences but in the end Zero loved Big Boss. Big Boss wondered if Zero hated or feared him when in reality Zero was always his friend
I just noticed another meta thing in this game. So basically Venom Snake symbolizes you the player, and through the player the entire metal gera community. The ending of Ground Zeroes was that the medic (Venom) threw himself in front of the Big Boss to save him from imminent death. Now this might just be a reference to how the Metal gear community basically saved the production of Phantom Pain by buying the Ground Zeroes glorified demo. and how the Metal gear fans are the most loyal and devoted fans, who would protect the franchise with their body.
KoDan MGS fans are basically a Cult who would go on a Shooting spree in the Konami Headquarters if they even interpreted a Message about it in a MGS game. Kojima is Laughing at the community since 2008, he’s having alot of fun taking jabs at it.
I believe one of Skull Face's tapes talk about how he wanted to mass deploy the parasites for units all over, but it was declined because it was thought to be inferior to the new and coming FOXDIE.
+MegamanNG I kind of suspected aprasites have something to do with it, when Parasites was revieled (which btw i think its a point whre game was rushly closed) i automaticly thouth about FOXDIE, it's similar concept but based on genetics insted of vocal trigger. It funny how they imply that parasytes are creators of voice in evolution... making MGS kind of biblical lol ;p
The feels were just to much when zero visited big boss in the hospital. I thought about when big boss cut off zeros air supply in mgs4 turning him back to nothing. Damn.
+Dustin Azrael Calugay No, he wasn't. He used John as a puppet; he made three clones without John's consent; he recruited Pacifica Ocean and Kazuhira Miller to force John to join Cipher (The Patriots). And, at the very end, he made a "mental clone" of John without asking. Zero, just like Big Boss, is the villain -- but for him, he was a good person. If you think Zero was a "bro all along", it means that what Kojima intended really worked out. The same goes for John: in Metal Gear games, his downfall is very subtle. At one point, John was a hero -- the one who save the world from a global catastrophe. After that, we see John running a private army of mercenaries. From hero to terrorist.
Damn whoever Zero got to record his secret conversations is a masterclass audio engineer. Such clarity while preserving small details like the sound of teacups when he hits the table.
Zero is so ducking awesome in this game - his VA is amazing and so is his characterisation. Kojima somehow made me finally buy into him being the overarching villain whilst also being a complex and sympathetic character at the same time. But he is painted as such an intellectual badass who is one step ahead of everyone at all times - whilst also having major flaws such as his trust in Skull Face and his handing over power to an AI system that veered away from his will and almost enslaved humanity via the SOP system
In fairness, he had to hand The Pariots over to _someone_ and he didn't trust anyone outside the initial members with it. Which, to be fair, makes a lot of sense when you consider how The Philosophers spiraled out of control when its founding members started dying off. Maybe if Huey hadn't murdered Strangelove before she had the chance to program compassion into the AI...
Skull Face got him only because The Boss was Zero's only weakness. He sneaked inside his hideout with a fake gift, like Troy's horse, a pin of The Boss would meant a lot to Zero. It's also the reason why the Patriots doesn't have emotion, he lost everything because of them.
TPP really gives you the in depth explanation about the war economy just by playing it correctly. You're building up a mercenary , grading their performance , getting currency , developing weapons , training them young , sending them on missions , making war a buissness. This what influenced everything we hear about in MGS4
Technically it started in peacewalker after Big Boss traveled the world's battlefields and began building a small army of disenfranchised soldiers. What kept it in check was that their goal was a bit more innocent. An army without a nation for hire for nation's without an army. They genuinely thought they were doing good by defying Cypher's schemes over the world powers. That all changed after Ground zeroes however. By that point all bets were off. In order to truly contest Cypher and SOP they had to become "bad guys" because the "good guys" were secretly being manipulated from the shadows. Thus the war economy was born, as war was once a means to an end it became a business to fund the *true* war.
Man, Phantom Pain is a good title for this game. There were so many things happening behind the curtains, hidden in the player's sight. I thought Zero would only be mentioned by name, until this tape shows him to be a major piece of the story. And I can tell the studio did a lot of careful work for this game. It's like everything is tied up nicely and is a sendoff of Metal Gear.
Well, Kojima must learn to make the story *IN-GAME* , Not in the 9 minutes cinematics of Guns of the Patriots or the Phantom Pain filler cassettes, Ej: Half Life and Portal.
@@holapete2682 Kojima always wanted to make movies, and i think this is what makes his games memorable, he draws so much from cinema and is able to create more mature video game plots because of it.
All of these tapes should have been cutscenes. Except, maybe, the whole Miller's Hamburgers "subplot." My favorite actual in-game cutscene was the one in the chopper where Codetalker and Venom discuss the parasites. Because, holy shit, Snake is actually having a conversation with someone, and not just thousand-yard-staring them.
It’s safe to say the events in Ground Zeroes are very real and were experienced by ‘John’ Big Boss, but I’d also say it being a simulation of sorts is true in Venom’s case. Ocelot does mention in the ‘Doublethink’ tape that through Hypnagogia, Venom shares John’s knowledge and experience, including his mission experience; likely everything from the Virtuous Mission to Camp Omega & the Fall of Mother Base
I originally wanted Zero to be the main villian of phantom pain,The big bad guy behind the curtain after skullface.Where we got to see what he was truly capable of. But after all that's happened, And after all he did to keep boss safe I just feel really bad of how we see him last in Guns of the patriots. And how big boss has to kill him to free him of a prison in his own mind.
Plotwise, the truth records make no sense, who records conversations with the most secretive man in the world, and how did it end up in Snake's Walkman?
Either party could have recorded these, but I like to think the final one with Zero is something Venom subconsciously remembered since he was comatose in the same room. The act of listening to the tape is just another one of his hallucinations.
Simple. Zero, being he who controls information, conceived and delivered these tapes upon formulating the plan. Ocelot, Big Boss, and you had to learn the "Truth" eventually.
The tapes gave this a radio drama feel and I preferred that over cutscenes personally. These aren’t just codec calls the background noise brings this to life and is beautifully directed. I know I’m not in the majority.
It's important to note that the medic, aka "v" has been brain washed to have all of Snake's experiences and metal abilities and other skills, so he could be Big Boss.
These tapes answer so many questions. Holy mother of god..!! all the important revelations and connections with future timelines in Metal Gear. At the end of the day there is no one real villain in Metal Gear. It's more grounded to reality and its beautiful that way. You could argue that the villain is us and our own definitions of righteous moral highground. Its civilizations all over the world, all the dis-balances in the world, all the hate from race inequalities, and religions. At first I had rough time at first with The Man Who Sold the World ending but then I heard the Doublethink tape and it all just click to my hard-hitting questions about who the Big Boss really was from MGS1,2,4. It all goes back that Ocelot making himself into Liquid with the same shit Zero did for the real Big Boss with his medic. Metal Gear Solid is just such a power cluster mind fck in an astonishing way. Its like that infamous Portal moment when you realize the Cake was a fcking lie. But its that X 1,000.
+Marco Mora I think there really was no villain, only a problem. No one saw the Boss' will the same way, and everyone spends their time trying to fulfill each other's idea of it only to have their plans just blow up in their face. It's pretty sad when you look back on the series and see how much it's just about people trying to understand their friend's last words.
+Marco Mora There were villains. Big Boss is a villain; Venom Snake is a villain; Zero and his "information control" is a villain too. But in Phantom Pain, everyone is overshadowed by Skull Face. You don't see Zero as a villain because, through the tapes, you can see his point of view. Nearly, Zero's plan doesn't look so bad, but when you see the big picture, you realise he was a bad guy all along. And what makes us villain anyway? Wrong choices perhaps? The miscomprehension of an ideology? But if you want to point at someone and say outloud that he was the "true villain", you can do that with Zero. His lust for power went out of control -- just like Eva stated at MSG4. He treated John as a puppet at the very end -- although he stated many times that John was his friend. That being said, in my opinion, MGSV is a "fuck you" to the fans of the saga. There is no "conclusion" in that game; no "missing link". It just opened even more questions and retconned many importants dialogue from the last console game (MGS4). Hell, Kojima threw Big Boss' appearance at the end of MGS4 into the garbage -- and the same goes for the entire Eva's monologue at the church.
+Bruno L. Big Boss isn't a villain per se, and Venom is a puppet/extension of BB. And if you actually pay attention, you'd notice that his plans blew up in his face. If anything, the real "villain" is the set of AIs.
Kamikaze Failure Abalasismabababadan Big Boss was a mercenery. He created Zanzibarland, recruited child soldiers, created a nuke and a Metal Gear. Explain to me: how Big Boss isn't a villain? It doesn't matter if Big Boss did all of this to kill Zero and the Patriots AI -- what he did was wrong. He as a terrorist, just like his puppet/mental clone or whatever. But the REAL villain was Zero. He became a beast because of his hunger for power.
That's quite usual with leaders who manage to unite diferent people with diferent ways of thinking under a single banner: they at there for the leader and only respect him, while just tolerate the others.
I wish we'd gotten to see things from Zero's perspective. How he ran his organisation, how he dealt with people, what Cipher was like from the inside, ect.
>Big Boss never heard Zero's final message. >Big Boss lived the rest of his life believing Zero was a monster only to reach the same epiphany in 2014 that Zero came to in the late 1970s. >Big Boss never got to hear Zero say goodbye. >because of Skull Face they were never able to reconcile. >and Zero never got to know that Venom killed Skull Face, the man that kept Zero and Big Boss from reconciling. Skull Face's true victory is keeping Big Boss and Zero apart. If Big Boss and Zero had come together in the late 70s, then the Patriot system would have never been activated, and Big Boss would have never gone on to build Outer Heaven. Solid, Liquid, and Solidus might have ended up having a decent life. Maybe the words that kill are the ones we never got to say.
Holy shit dude, now it all makes sense. Even skull faces dying words "the thirst for revenge that I have planted will infest the system!" Omg what a mindfuck, he literally fuelled everything that happened in the other games!!!
Imagine, all of this just to make sure the will of The Boss lived on. Its just too bad, Big Boss, Solid and to an extent , even Zero were used by the ever changing times the same way The Boss was.
These are kinda cool to listen to, but in the end, these will never replace the cinematic cuts cutscenes we love. These tapes are the result of the non-MGS fans complaining about the cut scenes we all love.
Big Boss is a title, not a name. Originally it was to be a codename, but after the "incident" in 1964, the name became a little too ominous. Thus the name was turned into a title, to cover the identify of the one who has the title with the benefits of being feared as a master of warfare.
Out of the all “successors”, Skull Face was by far the most wrong about The Boss’ vision. It’s not even a competition. She would never EVER want even close of what Skull Face planned (and failed at). After all this… Even Zero seems like a good guy, and honestly it makes me believe that Zero was the only one who truly could achieve The Boss’ vision. If only he cooperated with Big Boss.
Ironically and un ironically the ones who truly understood The Boss dying messages are Solid Snake (despite never knew her in person) and her own son Adam a.k.a Revolver Ocelot
So I wonder how Ocelot was able to break the hypnosis to remember that Venom isn't Big Boss. How would he do it? Unless the real Big Boss contacted him somehow after MGSV's events to "remind him". Maybe a certain word was used to break the hypnosis...
A twist after twist after twist after twist...What the hell is going on ! So what , everything that we learned in MGS 4 is now erased or simply at the end of MGS 4 Big Boss explains the story from his own eyes because it's clear that everything we thought we know is wrong ! In this game the make Big Boss look like the villain you only cared about his military nation and apparently Zero is not the bad guy , he is simply stupid for letting the AIs control the world but other than that he loved Big Boss but without his knowledge caused so much pain to him...." And the man on fire picked this time to wake up too " First of all , how do they know about the man on fire or who he is before Venom Snake learned about him ? As for the rest , I understand that Big Boss is a demon in this game but THIS ? This is so cold that I don't know if Big Boss is the real Big Boss afterall ! He doesn't care for Venom and he doesn't care about the people dying in the hospital... To him it's all an emotionless procedure that's happening so that he can create his legend ? I thought his escape meant creating a nation that would protect the soldiers and victims of war but in the end everything is about fame ! How can Big Boss in the same way again ? How can I feel bad about Big Boss at the end of MGS 4 or even take MGS 4 ending as canon when everything we know is changed ? I guess that explains the fact that there is no good or bad and only shades of grey in this world...Eveyone is fighting for their truth but Big Boss is really evil in this game and Kojima doesn't explain why...He also doesn't explain how Venom found out about his identity and why he chose to follow Big Boss instead of taking his revenge ? Why Venom becomes the bad guy ? Is this a bad game ? No , it's actually the best Metal Gear Solid game I have ever played but does it lack when it comes to story ? Unfortunately yes and I don't know who I should blame for this : Kojima or Konami ? We deserved a better ending , a better story and a better explanation ! Even the game doesn't fit with the whole scenario that Big Boss is somehow the good guy and Zero the bad...Everything's changed !
Apparently Kojima started planning a Chapter 3 - Peace from the perspective of BB who one way or another finally finds peace after killing the Boss (Meets sniper wolf/frank jaegar/Naomi) Then the budget got cut off by Konami. I loved and hated this game, having played all mgs without except i was overhyped over this partly because it was kojimas last game and i thought he would do a masterpiece of a finale. Then again we got an incomplete game...I still ponder about it everyday, so much potential in the story left as it is....
Eldin Rostom agrreed, it could be much more storywise...But the gameplay part I really loved and this is what makes me interested about this game : gameplay, enviroment , graphics...etc.
+Eldin Rostom +Chris Tsirigotis exactly. so much more could of happened in this game. Why is konami so stupid??? I mean what your saying here makes me sad. That we couldn't get to see a different version of sniper wolf or frank jaegar or Naomi. Damn. and like Chris said . the game play is frigging amazing. Oh well maybe the future will turn it around or he will start something new. who knows.
The shock still hit me when I first heard zero again..I had a feeling we would hear from him again in Thai game..just didn't know when..was I the only who actually didn't feel sorry for him and smiled when he got poisoned by skullface? Lol
I really hate the way Kojima and Konami put the best story only in a form of the tapes. THE WHOLE TRUTH TAPES COULD BE THE THIRD CHAPTER DAMNIT !!!!!. The Truth tapes is really a closure to the Big Boss and Zero saga.
@@nathanb5579 Nah this is lazy as fuck. Imagine if previous memorable MGS moments weren't done via cutscenes and instead via lazy tapes. Not sure what Kojima was smoking when he completely changed the style of the series and made it gameplay focused..not giving a fuck about the story unless it's some tapes
For anyone not knowing... You're not Big Boss, Naked Snake, Jack, John. You are Venom Snake. Punished Snake. The medic on the chopper when paz exploded. You got plastic surgery and also had your mind wiped. Put in memories of Big Boss. You would be his phantom. Be Big Boss while the actual Big Boss worked behind the scenes. He used you to save your arse, but for the quote on quote "greater good". Venom Snake was the man you killed as Solid Snake in Metal Gear 1 instead of big boss.
So the recording with paz and zero took place before peacewalker. That the whole thing was meant to bring Big Boss back to Zero. These games really can mess with you. Especially the phantom pain.
really like the twist, hee, so shocking, my take is that, Big boss legacy are build by 2 person, big boss and his phantom, and on this game we are the phantom, we build part of his legacy, act and do like his legacy. we did it on an unconscious mind, we think we are the real big boss, but we're not. Its exactly like a video game experience, where you play a role of the main character
This sucks, my friend. Is like saying half the things the Batman did were not done by the Batman. Suddenly the charaxhter loses strenght and depth. Big Boss was defined as the greatest soldier of 20* century. than, the boss is better. than, he did not do some of the things that were accredited to him. I mean, shit, Kojima, did you ever stop to think the fuck you are doing?
Adamo Leoni I'm sitting here reading lots of coments and noticed you come in all of them trying to proove that this game is bad because it makes Big Boss' character "lose strenght". But let's face the facts. the whole saga is about legends and how they differ from the true men behind them. In Metal Gear Solid 1 you see how they made Solid Snake look like someone he wasn't. Even Meryl was surprised when he wasn't the man she thought. In MGS2 it kept the same way, a rookie seeing Solid Snake as a hero, a legend, then noticing that the normal guy acting at his side, wounded and a dick of person was, in fact, the legendary Solid Snake. In MGS4 we see Snake old, broken and just a shadow of this "legend". Also, MGSV doesn't make the character lose strenght. Venom didn't killed The Boss, the best solider that walked on earth, Big Boss did. Venom didn't stopped Peace Walker from unleashing WW3 at Costa Rica/Nicaragua, Big Boss did. Venom didn't created FOXHOUND, Big Boss did. Venom didn't saved Sniper Wolf, Big Boss did. Venom didn't recruited Gray Fox and helped him to take care of Naomi, Big Boss did. Venom didn't created Outer Heaven, just went there when Big Boss had the whole place finished and ready to operate. Building a Metal gear wasn't Venom's idea, was Big Boss', it was only in Outer Heavenbecause it was the perfect test field. Big Boss was still responsable for everything that mattered. You, as his Phantom, was just resposnable for getting rid of Skullface, making loads of noise and atracting the attention to yourself while the real deal operated in the shadows.
I like the tapes, but just like Super Bunnyhop said “you can break the immersion by asking, who’s holding the microphone? Who’s recording the most secretive man on earth and how do those recordings get into Venom’s walkman?”
Sometimes i don't see Zero as evil. Seeing how humans are fucking awful, i would want to micromanage everything away from idiocy and insanity and only way to do that is artificial intelligence. But then again, nature, humanity and world is utter chaos and madness and bringing order to that madness is madness itself.
A lot of these tapes are super important to the main story and a lot of these must have been planned for cutscenes…to me this is the no1 proof that the game wasn't finished
Well Ocelot is a master manipulator and he may act dumb but he lets on more than you think and he knows everything plus he knows how the human mind works
As flawed as mgsv was, i feel it has aged just as well as the rest of the saga. Seems that people are warming up to the concept of Venom in recent times as well
In the end, Skullface managed to ruin the world by keeping Zero and Big Boss apart. Ripples created by him caused enough devastation eventually and ruined Quiet, Solid, Liquid, Solidus, Raiden and many more. If only BB and Zero talked once, they could've prevented MG-MG2-MGS2-MGS4-MGR from happening.
I'm sorry if I get badgered by this but: this story is just my second favorite Metal Gear Solid story after 3. It's brilliant, has a lot of analogies and metaphors. Everything about this breathes secrecy, mind manipulation, pain, friends breaking up, love, respect. Venom's words are replaced with anger and sorrow, sometimes a little joy. Jeep ride is quite significant; Venom does not speak because, deep inside his head, that is his personality. While Skull Face talks and talks, Venom just analyzes as his anger grows, his mind breaks down. Venom looks at Skull Face with hate. if nobody saw this, you should play it again. The only disappointment would be the incomplete chapter and that there will be no continuation to this game. My opinion.
Yeah. Actually. If you think about it. The Game is like a Diamond. It needs time to finish. And even after that. More time makes it more beautiful. Now that I think of it. Diamond-Dogs really do sound Ironic.
nah the story was crap. that so much important story was shoved into tapes or straight up not finished shows that. Also Venom sucks, boring af protagonist compared to the real Big Boss or Solid Snake.
If there's one thing I can praise about this, is that this gave good characterization to Major Zero. Ironic, as he was never in the actual game.
Interesting point... the biggest influences come from the people that don't hold guns or go near the battlefield
He was in snake eater for like 3 seconds
It is amazing how well they help flesh out Zero's character
Even more so given he doesn't physically appear.

Ocelot here is using that to apply to his self hypnosis - he will genuinely believe Venom is Big Boss on his dealings with him while at the same time knowing he isn't
Damn.
Thanks for the insight, I appreciate this comment
@notchjohnson1 we live in a society
This helps explain how he fooled everyone into thinking Liquid's arm took over his brain
God damn Zero's voice is so smooth
+Gofaw I like how they change his british humor way of talking from MGS3 regardless of implaying he is a bad guy pulling the strings :p
3:24 "Less on-fonts terri-bulls" goddamnit Ocelot lmao

+AtDeathsDoor hahahahaha xD
Skull Face should have wiped the French language off the map
The funniest thing is Ocelot is fluent in French

You can hear the differences in attitude between venom and naked, even when both are voiced by kiefer.
Easter Egg: When you first meet Ocelot on Mother Base, if you tranq him one of his burbles is "two plus two equals five".
+Brackynews oh fuck, I did that and it all makes sense now!
Brackynews yea I like how they did that 2 plus 2 = 5.
MGS5 AND there are 3 snakes (bosses clones) then the real boss and the phantom. 5 snakes
You don't need to do that on your first visit to Mother Base.

It makes me feel sad that Zero never wanted Big Boss dead and he still was his friend, but Boss died never knowing that.
+TheAwesomeDarkNinja Boss knew Zero cared for him. Remember, the truth tapes were sent from the real BB to Venom. That means BB had listened to them before handing them over to Venom.
MorningBunion Is that confirmed? The only tape I saw was Man Who Sold The World/ Operation Intrude. Unless it was implied.
@@MorningBunion a follow up the truth tape is on the other side of operation N313/Intrude
"wake up soon old friend, time is running short" damn I always thought zero had hatred towards big boss but when he said that it just shows there was a deep friendship there between the two.

*"He was an irreplaceable friend."*

Zero was quite the complicated fellow, but in the end he seemed to mean well. Him and BB Had different interpretations on how to achieve the same goal, and realized their mistakes. Great story.
@The Law Fuck Kojima for retconning Liquid Snake possessing Ocelot too.
funny how big boss was disgusted by the clone boys, but in the end of MGS4 he hugged snake and called him his son. guy really changed after all he went through
It's because he knew they were nothing more than tools created by Cypher and used by the Patriots.
+Red Ramirez best voice actor in the game by some margin
Didier Guerin
yes mate, he did a bloody brilliant job

Man...the last few tapes make me start to feel bad about Major Zero...
+Mikuru Sunny Why? I didn't understand shit. Zero was Big Boss' rival, but wasn't, at the same time. I don't even know why Big Boss is Zero's enemy.
+Unknow0059 # Because they both didn't see eye to eye on how should the Boss's last will be fulfilled.
+Unknow0059 # Big Boss and Zero had their differences but in the end Zero loved Big Boss. Big Boss wondered if Zero hated or feared him when in reality Zero was always his friend
Can you explain who zero is?isn't he the guy who helps solid to kill big boss?
That is Miller, actually.
Even Ocelot saying "The rest depending of his skill" meaning that Venom Snake skill is depending on the player
38:35 - The origin of FOXDIE. That's how it would ultimately come about.
+MegamanNG You mean.. The Parasite was the Source of FOXDIE?
Ymiriron No. More like the inspiration for it. The Parasite virus would be a starting point for how FoxDie would come about.
Shadowriver uh huh.
The feels were just to much when zero visited big boss in the hospital. I thought about when big boss cut off zeros air supply in mgs4 turning him back to nothing. Damn.
I mean, if The Sorrow taught us anything, he's still around.
He actually hugged zero when he cut the oxygen
So Zero was a bro all along
+Dustin Azrael Calugay He's the kind of bro that alot of us didn't see coming.
+Tumble Butt / Styx on Fire he is still the same, an enemy
***** Bronemy
+Dustin Azrael Calugay He quashed the beef.
I can see Kiefer as Big Boss using the MGSV model, his voice suits Big Boss
Damn whoever Zero got to record his secret conversations is a masterclass audio engineer. Such clarity while preserving small details like the sound of teacups when he hits the table.
He IS basically the Illuminati as a human being after all

Zero is so ducking awesome in this game - his VA is amazing and so is his characterisation. Kojima somehow made me finally buy into him being the overarching villain whilst also being a complex and sympathetic character at the same time. But he is painted as such an intellectual badass who is one step ahead of everyone at all times - whilst also having major flaws such as his trust in Skull Face and his handing over power to an AI system that veered away from his will and almost enslaved humanity via the SOP system
Wish he actually appeared though, having to listen to so many tapes to get his story is lame
@@journey95far49 well I suppose if he was in game he would probably start decaying due to his illness
Skull Face got him only because The Boss was Zero's only weakness.
He sneaked inside his hideout with a fake gift, like Troy's horse, a pin of The Boss would meant a lot to Zero.
It's also the reason why the Patriots doesn't have emotion, he lost everything because of them.
now go to sleep, old friend. -BB, 2014
TPP really gives you the in depth explanation about the war economy just by playing it correctly. You're building up a mercenary , grading their performance , getting currency , developing weapons , training them young , sending them on missions , making war a buissness. This what influenced everything we hear about in MGS4
Kojima gave us the missing link, but there are just so many answers left on mistery.
Metal Gear six will be amazing right guys 😍🤩🤩🤩
Ocelot is honestly a goddamn genius, foreseeing the war economy of MGS4 so many years before it really happened
Oh man, these tapes were so excellently done. They really went all out on the audio production.
These should have been cutscenes. Would've made for a much fuller ending sequence.
Welp the Fans cried about it
"TO MANY CUTSCENE WAH WAH LESS PLZ LESS"
So he did....
"MORE CUTSCENE IT'S SHIT WITHOUT 'EM WAH WAH"
Jez.
Except, maybe, the whole Miller's Hamburgers "subplot."
My favorite actual in-game cutscene was the one in the chopper where Codetalker and Venom discuss the parasites. Because, holy shit, Snake is actually having a conversation with someone, and not just thousand-yard-staring them.
Indeed
It’s safe to say the events in Ground Zeroes are very real and were experienced by ‘John’ Big Boss, but I’d also say it being a simulation of sorts is true in Venom’s case.
Ocelot does mention in the ‘Doublethink’ tape that through Hypnagogia, Venom shares John’s knowledge and experience, including his mission experience; likely everything from the Virtuous Mission to Camp Omega & the Fall of Mother Base
Glad Kojima tied it in somehow for Metal Gear 1 and 2
I would love for them to make a remake of Metal Gear from NES and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. It would be amazing to see them in 3D and great graphics
I love it how the good guys have a secret agenda that no one knows about instead of the bad guys.
Ocelot did everything for boss. He's the hero in disguise. Every boss needs an ocelot
And they all did everything for The boss. Even skullface
You got to love that family feeling the snake eater team has. All I always wonder is where tf is EVA
"A face means nothing when one soul is able to communicate directly with another."
Again... No real big bad guys in the MGS series. It's all perspective.
what about volgin?
Skullface, Volgin, and to a certain degree, Solidus were all kind of big bads.
Syxx66 Solidus? You mean the guy who tried to fight the patriots, which is exactly what we do in the next game in the timeline? I disagree.
skullface (as hammy as he is) had reasons for his actions and an informative backstory, volgin just felt like a dick to me.
shadowshinobi06 don't you get what perspective means? To him he thought he was doing the right thing, where as someone else might not think that way.
Big Boss was the one we thought pissed himself all along..
He didn't piss himself, watch the cutscene again, he put too much pressure onto an IV bag filled with water.

Plotwise, the truth records make no sense, who records conversations with the most secretive man in the world, and how did it end up in Snake's Walkman?
Zero and Ocelot recorded things for snakey poo
Either party could have recorded these, but I like to think the final one with Zero is something Venom subconsciously remembered since he was comatose in the same room. The act of listening to the tape is just another one of his hallucinations.
Simple. Zero, being he who controls information, conceived and delivered these tapes upon formulating the plan. Ocelot, Big Boss, and you had to learn the "Truth" eventually.
Yeah it's pretty fuckin' dumb ngl
It's nothing canon I believe it's just for us player to hear the plot
and our main character killed the copter pilot because he heared this。
Zero's voice actor is really good in this one.
5:25 - 5:54
Ah Ocelot, you and your looking 30 years into the future.
+Marco Mora except huey, fuck huey
4:00 big boss ain't getting a father's day gift
Can't believe that had that obscure callback to Ocelot not trusting the French from MGS2
Here's a little Easter Egg at 3:53 - ATGC stands for Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, and Cytosine, the 4 proteins that compose DNA. Very fitting.
The company was mentioned in MGS1 i think
Yes it was para-medics research company
I like how everyone loves Big Boss but hate each other lol
That's quite usual with leaders who manage to unite diferent people with diferent ways of thinking under a single banner: they at there for the leader and only respect him, while just tolerate the others.
Ocelot: Boss, why are you smoking?
Snake: To ease the pain from the eye you shot me when you are trying to pass by Volgin's bitch!
ocelot: you never are gonna let me forget it dont you.
snake: hey you took my eye.
To think zero survives XO's attempt on his life but to only become a still body
Skull Face meant him to survive.
Skullface are cruel bastard. he wanted Zero to suffer fate worse than death
It's cool that Ocelot mentions Double think and the 2+2=5 . Very neat reference to 1984
I wish we'd gotten to see things from Zero's perspective. How he ran his organisation, how he dealt with people, what Cipher was like from the inside, ect.
The 1st tape actually ties in with Ocelot's story, since he made himself into Liquid's phantom.
Big Boss talked more in the tapes than Venom Snake did during the entire game.
Edwin Nah yeah, it was a good choice.
It shows the REAL Big Boss is a talkative person
Big boss would have heard zeros final message he would have listened to these tapes
Big boss passed these tapes along to venom so he did listen to these !
no wonder he says "2 + 2 = 5 2 + 2 = 5 ugh" if you tranq him enough times waste of ammo but it's funny as hell
Imagine, all of this just to make sure the will of The Boss lived on. Its just too bad, Big Boss, Solid and to an extent , even Zero were used by the ever changing times the same way The Boss was.
Skull face is the ultimate bad guy of the entire MGS series
Mgs3: Zero is an ally and friend
Mgs3 PW: man fuck Zero and cipher
Mgs4: it's Zero who did this
Mgs5: Zero is an ally and friend.
These are kinda cool to listen to, but in the end, these will never replace the cinematic cuts cutscenes we love. These tapes are the result of the non-MGS fans complaining about the cut scenes we all love.
This was brilliant, thanks for this.
Kiefer does a great job in the Truth tapes. There's something different in his Big Boss compared to his Venom.
Yet people still say the same bullshit about how Venom is quiet because Kiefer Sutherland cost too much
Big Boss is a title, not a name. Originally it was to be a codename, but after the "incident" in 1964, the name became a little too ominous. Thus the name was turned into a title, to cover the identify of the one who has the title with the benefits of being feared as a master of warfare.
MGS4 made me despise Zero but after listening to these tapes...wow. Shame...
@The Law whats been retconned?
@The Law somebody mad
@The Law ok?
Ocelot is the real mastermind.
So I wonder how Ocelot was able to break the hypnosis to remember that Venom isn't Big Boss. How would he do it? Unless the real Big Boss contacted him somehow after MGSV's events to "remind him". Maybe a certain word was used to break the hypnosis...
Isn't there a Tape that answerd that?

+Chris Tsirigotis whoa..
lunatiksAlterEgo yup lol.
Oh well maybe the future will turn it around or he will start something new. who knows.

These tapes are an emotional roller coaster still now
I really hate the way Kojima and Konami put the best story only in a form of the tapes. THE WHOLE TRUTH TAPES COULD BE THE THIRD CHAPTER DAMNIT !!!!!. The Truth tapes is really a closure to the Big Boss and Zero saga.

OuterHeavenBoss I like the style they chose. Really enjoy the tapes. Light up a cigarette, some burning hot tea... fuck yeah
Missed opportunity should be the tagline for MGSV...gameplay wise it's good but story wise it's all wasted potential
@@nathanb5579 Nah this is lazy as fuck. Imagine if previous memorable MGS moments weren't done via cutscenes and instead via lazy tapes. With darkness and silence through the night
These tapes are the best part of the entire game
5:42 Ahhhhh, I see what you did there!
really like the twist, hee, so shocking, my take is that,
Big boss legacy are build by 2 person, big boss and his phantom,
and on this game we are the phantom, we build part of his legacy, act and do like his legacy. we did it on an unconscious mind, we think we are the real big boss, but we're not. Its exactly like a video game experience, where you play a role of the main character
Kojima pls
This sucks, my friend. Is like saying half the things the Batman did were not done by the Batman. Suddenly the charaxhter loses strenght and depth.
Big Boss was defined as the greatest soldier of 20* century. than, the boss is better. than, he did not do some of the things that were accredited to him. I mean, shit, Kojima, did you ever stop to think the fuck you are doing?
You're doing a great job missing the point of the entire franchise if you think Big Boss or even Solid Snake were ever meant to be Batman.
And you are missing the point of my comment, but that is what happens on the net. Look, i do not care. If you enjoyed the plot good for you.
They recorded themselves
Agreed, i love it.
David Hayter was the best V.O for Snake ever
Sad thing about this is that Big Boss and Zero never got on the same page and misunderstood each other until there was no fixing it.
0:15 The real big boss is so different from venom..
Why change David Hayter? He is Snake, the same way Charles Martinet is Mario if you ask me that was literally MGS5 biggest sin.
