KT Tape: Ankle Sprains

    Ankle sprain is an injury of ligaments, usually on the outside of the ankle. Severity is evaluated if the ligament is stretched, partially torn, or completely torn, as well as by the number of ligaments affected.
    Ankle sprains occur when the foot twists or rolls beyond its normal range of motion. You can sprain your ankle if the foot is planted unevenly on a surface, beyond the normal force of stepping. This causes the ligaments to stretch beyond their normal range in an abnormal position. Sprains are rated into 3 levels by the severity of sprain: Grade I is a strain or stretch of the ligaments; Grade II is a tear of the ligaments; Grade III is a complete tear of a ligament.
    KT Tape is used as a flexible support to the ankle. It does not immobilize the joint but provides support and pain relief for grade I sprains. Unlike traditional ankle braces, KT Tape provides a light support that is very comfortable and allows you to have a greater range of motion. KT Tape can be used as part of the recovery process for more serious sprains, but only after the ankle has recovered enough that it can have some movement without aggravating the sprain.

    I did 15 100s and 15 50s with a parachute..was hard to walk the day before..followed the instructions for the ankle sprain KT Tape..and it woooooooorks!!! I had NO pain at all..and I showered and kept the tape on and did 185 on push-press..and again NO pain..showered and took it off and my ankle still felt GREAT--thanks A LOT!

    @kikomx118 You can wear KT Tape before, during, and after physical activity. It's very common for people to use KT Tape before activity to provide a little extra stability and support.

    Thank you so much! Running is my life and I sprained my ankle on a downhill slope to a bottle neck exit and the fear hit me it could not heal right. After using this technique can run worry free (: thank you again!

    @IamMsMaam haha- I know what you mean. Actually, if you are getting 3 days out of the ankle app then you're doing great. Normally the foot applications last 1-2 days.

    From one or our Pro tapers:
    What I have found on ankles (and many other body parts) is a relaxed position. So in a long sit, and dependent on the part of the ankle you are considering, have the foot relaxed & place the tape with maximally 5-25% stretch. Now if you are considering an anterolateral ankle sprain then you might DF to 90 degrees. However, for distal Posterior tib relaxed position may be best from the results I have seen.

    I love this stuff!! It's a little expensive but works very well, especially when I am fortunate enough and not so sweaty that I can keep it on for at least 3 days.

    Product works miracles. It does adhere when you follow instructions. Sorry guys. But you do have to shave.

      I'm also sceptical about this technique. Specifically because kinesio tape is designed to pull TOWARD the anchor. Which would mean that if taped this way it would INCREASE supination, putting more strain on the already stretched ligaments. It makes no sense for that type of sprain

    I agree with the majority. I also had to play each step multiple times, I would like to have seen the other side for a better idea where to mount. The last tape I basically went from one side under the arch to the top? Don't think that was correct but the last one I watch soo many times and still couldn't get it!

    I used bandage and electrical tape , I'm not tight , just poor . And it worked straight away . And if your watching this i feel your pain lol . Good luck .

    I kind of wish I had someone who could do this for me. My leg keeps getting in the way when I do it myself, and I'm sure I've got it all twisted around the wrong way. 😅 But just having any tape is better!

    Thank you, I thought I had only broken my second toe on a backpacking trip. 2 days later my ankle swelled. I don't remember injuring my ankle, but I guess I did. This stuff has worked great for my tennis elbow. Probably didn't help that I kept hiking on that foot, but as I said, I was not aware that I had injured my ankle. The trip was awesome, despite the injury, but the river water was frigid, so I didn't feel much, maybe that is why I didn't notice for so long. Planning another trip next month

    My only issue with this is I won’t be able to apply my sprain ointment. I mostly used kinesio tape for my ITBS and knee issues when I’m actively running.

    @Lumosinc, you are right about the time on an ankle. It would have been 3 days had I been willing to allow it to stay loose and cruddy but I had to pull it off after the shower on day 2. Great product otherwise, I love that it's not as restricting as a brace and that it feels like there is nothing there but it gives the support you need. On my knees, I can get 4 days easy. IT JUST COST TOO MUCH!! That is all. ;)

    For those who think this product does not work: I use Kinesiology Tape I’m sprained so that I can move/walk . If I’m training on my sprained ankle I use athletic tape. Also get pre -tape adhesive spray for the tape to stick on for days. Your wallet will thank me .

    The positioning of the tape in the final result was different than what he was actually applying before the video cut. Also, a PT specialist told me this approach doesn’t really do very much. 😑

    Hey i just found out that i got badly torn tendon in my ankle ( very lucky it wasn't broken ) with bad bruising spreading to my toes and up the back of my shin. Would this or your new link video be best for my ankle? if either are not then what would help it to heal? the doctor said that i should be walking on it now with out any help, but it does give me a lot of pain, what do you think? btw iv done my ankle a few times before but nothing like this. please get back to me asap thanks :)

    this does nothing. i had a foot and ankle sprain in basketball and that put my out for a while. now in softball I still have pain and someone told me to try k tape. what does it even do. well let me tell you all it does is wast money and leave adhesive marks on your skin.

    I hope that I can get some guidance here {even if it`s "not here, but here _____" - such an email to write to}........
    I was horribly injured in a near-deadly car crash 6 months ago, but {THANK GOD} I`m alive and healing. My last major thing to deal with in my right ankle - the upper side. I don`t think that the doctor visit, which informed me of what the MRI showed, informed me of specifically which upper-ankle ligament was completely severed, but it`s either the superior extensor retinaculum or part of the inferior extensor retinaculum. The doctor told me that they see surgery in my future, but that it can`t happen until the large wound on the inner side of the ankle fully closes {which I`m not far from}. I`ve kept the ankle wrapped in 2 Ace bandages {*2 layers-thick} for months, and have walked with a heavy limp. I wonder if I can switch to KT {which I used often prior to the crash, when exercizing / working-out, and while working as a cashier because I was on my feet a lot} - switch NOW .
    At the least, I would want to wrap after the surgery {*if the ankle hasn`t miraculously healed by then}.
    My inquiry is about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION {haha 😁} ............ which method of ankle-wrapping is best suited to my particular issue?

    This video is terrible. The angles are horrible and why does the camera zoom out so much!? I had to rewind a rewatch each step over and over and over again because I basically had to guess where he was putting the tape. He'd be talking about putting the anchor on the inside of the foot but the camera is looking on the outside. Makes no sense. This tape is useless if I can't apply it correctly. And I can't apply it correctly if your instruction video is crap. Plus, he'd say "the outside of the ankle" but then put the tape on the inside of the ankle. Please redo this video.

    this is an inferior product to good old fashioned tape. don't waste money.
