Hi, i am a marathon runner and have been suffering for more than 3 months from a torn ligament. I was given an ankle binder but that is quite painful to wear. This looks so much better. My friend told me that she got rid of the same injury in two months. She saw your video too. Thank you Mr.Gibbons.
Hi, can i ask you: did you partially or fully tear your ankle ligament, because i have a partial tear in my ankle and it has been 5 weeks now. It's getting a little bit better but i don't know how long i should wait to try and jog again
@@noahzwart9157 hi! I was wrong about my injury mentioned here, it got worse in the future. It's been more than a year and it's still not the same. It was not a complete tear but a very bad tear. Nonetheless, all the best.
I lightly twisted my ankle about a month ago and had strong pain the next day. I just started picking up soccer practice again this week and found this video. The way you explained the tension was really helpful, thanks!
After having 4 reconstruction surgeries, I hate having to use braces to keep from rolling it. Immediately after applying this application walking is a breeze. Although the pain is still there, walking is a lot easier. Thanks for posting this technique.
It causes a lift to the skin and allows the space in-between the tissues to increase, this will allow the passage of the blood and the return of the lymph as well as off loading the pain receptor.
Hi Dusty, thanks for the comments, you can apply the Kinesiology tape and leave on for 5 days so perfect for ultra distance events, if you use zinc oxide type of taping then once it is wet it looses the effect. John
This is the best tutorial i have seen for the ankle sprain so many pull from the outside in instead of inside to out on the first strip for the inversion sprain. which is key to get the best support for it.
Thanks a million Courtney for the brilliant comments and yes I agree as when I teach ankle taping, I always say to tape from the inside to the outside.......by the way this is one of my older video as I have some newer videos which i think are a bit more professional but very similar (different shirt and model....) regards JG
I would agree with both of you if we were using standard non-stretch tape for treating the ankle sprain with stirrups, however the nature of kinesio taping is the recoil effect of the tape thereby creating a relative inversion tension moment on the tape when taping medial to lateral - Kory, PT
I really like your no-nonsense videos and no-nonsense taping methods - better than a book! I'd agree with MGauvinLMT's comment that the third piece of tape isn't so easy to see what you're doing. A different colour would help. Thanks.
Thank you for posting this. It has been instrumental in getting back out to run as I transition out of a brace from torn ligaments. The support reduced the pain that had me scared to run/worried I'd re-tear. Can't wait to run ultras again! If you have time, would love to know if this would be helpful for me to do before I run ultras on unstable surfaces or if I should go old school with athletic tape. I don't plan to do off road ultras for at least 5 months.
Hi Jay, Kinesiology taping is excellent for most musculoskeletal pain so you can try the taping I demonstrate for the ankle. If you use normal athletic taping like zinc oxide then it is better to get a trained therapist to apply as it can cause a problem if not applied correctly. Hope that helps, John
thanks for the comments, my videos are monetised now. I have a DVD out this year and a book on Kinesiology Taping. In terms of your foot, try the one I demonstrate and let me know if it helps
Hello John, thanks for this very helpful video. I have one question though - if you want to stabilze the lateral malleolous, i.e the ankle was sprained in inversion; wouldn't it be more reasonable to start the first tape from the lateral side of the leg and stretch to the medial size? for me it makes sense that in this direrction the tape would "force" the ligaments to get "shorter" and more stabilized. thanks!
Hello John, thank you for this video. I understand the routes of the first two lengths of tape, but not the third one. You seem to start it on the medial side, below the malleolus, pass it under the heel to the lateral side, and then somehow it returns to the medial side and wraps partly across the top of the foot. What happens on the lateral side? It can't be seen on the video. Thank you.
I would tape most of ankle injuries in a neutral position as if you place the ankle into inversion to help for an eversion sprain then you place the lateral ligaments into a potentially weakened position, then you risk another injury. 85% of all ankle injuries are an Inversion sprain so an eversion sprain is quite rare, good luck
thanks for the great taping videos. this was very helpful but it you didn't show the application of the third piece very well. that initial placement is important and it was difficult to see.
Yesterday I had rolled my ankle, lateral inversion. I stepped backwards off a curb and when my foot landed on the ground it rolled. I weight 175lbs and with the downward force plus my weight I'm assuming that the downward force was even heavier. Immediately I felt pain like anyone would and my foot started to swell near the ATL area. I've gone to the hospital, got an xray which I had no broken bones. The doctor said to use the RICE method for a few days and if the pain and swelling do not subside they will do an MRI. I iced it as soon as I got home, took Ibuprofen, and have kept it elevated. When I woke up this morning I was able to somewhat flex my foot upwards which I could absolutely not do yesterday. I still cannot put my weight on it without extreme discomfort. If I put my foot down on the ground with little weight and try to flex my foot or toes it's immediate sharp pain. I do feel like it's gotten better in just 24 hours but I'm trying to get a good idea of when I will be able to return to work. I know you cannot really judge without an examination or even an mri but in your professional opinion with all the info I gave how long do you think it will be before I can work a full 8 hour day with the majority standing? As of right now I can stand without my crutches but with only about 20% of my weight without feeling extreme discomfort. I can somewhat flex my foot upwards but when I try to flex my toes upwards that's when the sharp pain begins. I'm sure I stretched or possibly slightly tore some tendons or ligaments. Your professional opinion would be greatly appreciated of how long you think I'll be out based on what I've told you and from your previous encounters with this injury, patient wise. Thank you.
I guess if it has improved in the last 24 hours then that is a good sign that it will improve - i can see this message is 4 days ago so how is it now? If you respond and say it is a lot better and you can weight bear without pain then it wont take long....good luck, JG
I sprained my ankle falling down stairs 6 weeks ago. Somehow it’s a combination sprain because it’s swollen on both sides and in the back on the sides plus the front. I think it was twisted. The pain was excruciating but subsided quickly and I could put weight on it. The bruises have healed but there’s still swelling. Will this tape help it heal?
Hi, I just found your video. I love using tape for pain. I sprained my right ankle on the 5th of May and they put it in a walking boot for 6 weeks. On the 15th of this month they took me out of the boot and told me to buy some hightop shoes and just walk on it. Sure.....That's sounds all good and stuff because you think. Well, you still have your left foot to compensate. But I don't. The day I sprained my right foot after stepping down unto uneven ground I quickly stepped down with my left foot because my right foot hurt so bad, I needed to get my body weight off it, and broke my left ankle in 3 places plus dislocated it. So needless to say my now unguarded right foot is having to do all the work while my aircasted foot sits on a knee scooter. So when I need to get into the car from my scooter or use the toilet my right foot that's still hurts is twisting causing more pain. I'm also using my right leg do much for support to get down and up from a standing and sitting position that it's causing shin pain. 😱 I'm scared to death I will break my ankle or end up back in a walking cast again. Not to mention the shin pain worries me tremendously. The sprain was an inverted sprain with partial tear and a very small fracture. I've tried 2 braces but I still get uncomfortable pain. I get pain on both sides of my ankle and that's annoying. It hurts to even lay my foot on a pillow or mattress at night.. Should I see a PT for this? I'm not sure how to turn my foot without adding more pain. It's hard to pivot in tennis shoes. Would KT tape bennifit this issue? And how can I make the tape stick to last longer? I've used tape on my thumb and side of hand for strained pain but it wears off fast but of course I'm washing my hand.
Have a look at the abkle taping for Oedema as that will help reduce the swelling. I would also have an X-Ray if the swelling is still present after a month, you might have sustained a fracture.
Hi Christine, thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it. Yes I do agree the video is a cit clumsy on the third piece of tape, there will be more videos added soon so keep watching. John
Remarkable to place the first tape on the medial side of the ankle and tape towards the lateral side with an inversion. Kinesiotape always pulls towards the first anker, so now the tape is pulling the ankle towards inversion. I was tought (sportsmasseur and training kinesio) in case of an inversion to place any tape, kinesio or sporttape, from lateral to medial, hope for a substantiated answer.
Hi, thanks for the helpful video. Could you clarify for me, the purpose of the first black piece of tape? Is it there to off-load the ATFL, while the pink tape is to off-load the Calcaneo-fibular lig? Tom
My only concern is that as you apply the band or tape..that medication that is on the tape will get on your skin and thus hands.... I think we have the fitted socks that could be used for that internally...since the tape already has give. So in other words, you get together with a sock company....and invert the sock and place it inside the sock and sell it as an alternative to doing the rap...haahaastick'em. Yes, I think we have sinthetic socks and its a selling point...or the workout gloves or rollerblading gloves...so far I see and endless potential...and many different options and preferences for a sale. Even a watch band or bracelette...for the wrist or ankle. Options is the selling point and creating a line of product with the kinesio tape that includes the tape as part of another product or accessory. Then folks can bathe instead of worrying about the tape etc. What the issue..the other products are not selling and are also considered braces and are used to prevent injuries so you save another enterprise and include them too etc. I know it can really get convoluted really fast.
Merci pour tous ces conseils que j utilise toutes les semaines avant le sport..j ai une cheville très fragilisée suite à plusieurs antorces,j utilise les bandes leukotape k qui sont géniales!
Hi , ive got fractured my right fibula 3 weeks ago, they never put me in the cast just gave me the big walker booth and week ago after second x-ray the doctor told me that i can do short walks and try to put some pressure every day so i can walk without crutches . today i can walk with out them but flat footed, cant lift my foot nor to bend as mush as the other one and got that slight stubbing little pain - discomfort under the ball of my ankle if i try to walk as normal... so, can i use these tapes for support or not, bcos i feel much comfier in my nike trainers than in that crappy "moon walker booth" and maybe with that tape support it might be better in next few weeks till my fibula hill up ;0 thanks in advance, G.
My ankle was sprained and PTFL and CFL ligaments of my ankles was torn(Grade 2 stage) , may i request you to show how to tape those PTFL and CFL ligament pls.....
Hi, the 'fanning' taping technique to control the swelling will be the best one for you, it sounds like you need to see a Physical therapist to help with the Rehabilitation process. Good luck
Okay John I have a question for you I’m about to go in my second year has a student Athletic Trainers at my college and at my college we sometimes use the Kinesiology tape but only for Maybe shin splints and shoulder pain but I always wondered how it works on the ankle like how much dose it help and how much support dose it give thanks, Jace D. L. Gladden
Hi Jace, thanks for the message and in reality Ktape does has a place in the trainers kitbag, however, it does not replace athletic tape as KTape is not designed for stability like the white zinc oxide. The Ktape will only reduce some on the symptoms only by causing a lifting effect and for some athletes it helps so worth trying now and agin. I personally am still a big fan of Ron O'Neil (Athletic Trainer in the US for Super Bowl teams that taught me) who showed me Power Flex and Power Tape system - very stable taping system. Regards JG
Hey Megan (are you Welsh with a name like Jones?) - yes you can tape for a Deltoid ligament - place the foot more in neutral rather than eversion like the video, regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Yes Jones is a Welsh name. My father-in-law's family is a descendant from Wales. Thank you so much for your help, I love your taping videos they make so much more sense then some of the American ones here.
Hi, great video, I have a question, all the taping work on the same principle, like reduce fatigue and promotes blood flow for faster recovery, but if I use the ice therapy do we do bad or good because if we use ice, we do it different than promote blood. What do you suggest to use it? both or just taping?
Hi John, thanks for the helpful video. I was just wondering what this type of tape is called? i was unable to hear it clearly on the video, and also, if and where you could buy these tapes from. Cheers.
Hi John, I am a Paediatric Physical Therapist from India. Would you be able to share some resources for taping in Paediatrics - especially Cerebral Palsy (foot and posture) and prevention of unwanted reflexes. Thank you in advance.
Hi John. Really like your videos. One question. I have a just sprained my ankle last week and are beginning to get a full range of motion in my ankle. In a couple of weeks I have a rather important match, which I would like to participate in. So my question is. Is this taping for recovery or can it be used as stabiliser/precaution in a game situation? Or should I instead apply a more "stiff" taping where I go for a more limited range of motion in my ankle? Hope you are able to answer. Regards Rasmus
I recently rolled my ankle, but it’s not my ankle that’s in pain, it’s more the outside of my foot is hurting when I put my weight on it. Could I use this method for the my foot?
Can you use the tape to support your ankle while playing basketball even if you dont have a sprain? Also how long should the tape be left on your ankle, for instance when you treating a sprained ankle. Thanks

I tore a tendon in my foot/ankle getting off of my motorcycle about 3 years ago the doctor had me wear a boot for 5 weeks 24 hours a day only off to shower(it sucked but ) it never healed correctly and I tend to limp on that leg if I try to curl my toes inside my shoe I can most times walk better would this wrap help my condition?

Well I had ankle sprain but not so much pain , I could walk with little pain and it took around 1 week but still didn’t get healed and I went for X-ray but couldn’t see any significant damage..btw what is the best leg position while resting!!
Just want to ask the purpose for the last strip starting from the medial side. Wouldnt it be helping the ankle in plantarflexion? Say it is an inversion injury isnt dorsiflexion the movement that needs support instead? Or is it merely for stability of the ankle
Thanks for the message and it is a sort of heel lock or a figure of 8 that will help stabilise the ankle but it doesn't provide the same stability as athletic tape but will help. regards JG
Err quick question what is the difference between kinesiology tape and athletic tape? Also if there was a scenario where a footballer had a fresh injury in the middle of a match and must play on, would you recommend using the same taping method and same tape or would you use rigid taping to provide more stability? Thanks for the reply
Athletic tape is more preventative and has little stretch so good for stabilising joints. KTape generally has about 120-180% stretch so not the same to provide stability but some athletes prefer it as more comfortable and can stay on for a few days. regards JG
Thanks for the message and you can buy them pre-cut - if not then look at the back of the tape as they are in squares and a standard strip is 5 squares, regards JG
Hey, just a question. I tore a ligament in my ankle about a year ago and I play basketball actively (4-5 times a week). Anyways, swelling never really went away completely, and I sprained it again a few days ago. Would you recommend this method since I have a little hematoma, or the method for the swollen ankle? Keep in mind that I seek for stability while playing, I really want to prevent any more sprains. Or maybe I should just use regular tape? Would really appreciate an answer, thanks.
There are many ways to stabilise an ankle and KTape has between 140-180% stretch so might not be suitable to give true stability to an ankle that has recurrent ankle inversion sprains. The standard athletic tape is probably better if you want that effect, I was also taught another taping system by an Athletic trainer for the Super Bowl teams and his name is Ron O'Neil and he has a 'power flex & power taping method', which is brilliant, so check that out. However for swelling then try the Ktape as might help and swelling causes pressure and pressure causes pain. Hope that helps, regards JG
Savagella we have the same problem and you will have a chance to have chronic ankle sprain when you repeatedly sprain your ankle and a chance to become artritis.
2 weeks ago I discovered that I'm missing the Ligament that controls the inward rotation of my ankle. 2 days ago I twisted that ankle, and there is persistent pain even today. I'm unsure if I should strap it and if so how, my doctor told me, when I found out about the long standing issue, that I should rest it for a while, to let inflamation in the other ligament and tendons to subside, but did not tell me how to support it in case of injury. Advice would be welcome thank you

I would try and see a therapist like me if I am honest, you can try and reduce the swelling by using the taping technique for oedema that i have on youtube as that will help, take some anti inflammatory medication and ice 3/4 x daily for next 3 days. that should reduce the pain to start with then you need to star some gentle rehab exercises as long as there is nothing else going on with the ankle joint. good luck

Literally
Very good!
Thank you! Cheers!
tape is called Tiger K Tape and you can buy from my website
On the back of the tape there are squares and I tend to use 5/6 squares for a standard ankle taping technique
Brilliant thanks very much
Thanks for the message and comments, regards JG
How long should the pieces of tape be?
Most tapes have 'squares' on the back and a normal length for a standard 'I' strip will be 5 squares, regards JG
John Gibbons Thank you for the quick response John!
Merci beaucoup 👍👍
Thanks, regards JG
I would go for an X-Ray, let me know what they say
Try the taping technique I am demonstrating as that can help her ankle.
Merci pour tous ces conseils que j utilise toutes les semaines avant le sport..j ai une cheville très fragilisée suite à plusieurs antorces,j utilise les bandes leukotape k qui sont géniales!

Does this work on a anterior talofibler ligament injury?
Of course as that is the most common ligament to be sprained in the body - regards JG
@@JohnGibbons and posterior talofibler ligament? Because I have both lol 😂
Hi, the 'fanning' technique might be better to control the swelling, look at my other video 'ankle oedema swelling'. John
I am sure the technique I demonstrate will help stabilise as well as off load some of the pain, good luck
My ankle was sprained and PTFL and CFL ligaments of my ankles was torn(Grade 2 stage) , may i request you to show how to tape those PTFL and CFL ligament pls.....
I have another video on my channel that will show that taping technique, regards JG
L. Gladden
Oh and really great video! 👍🏻
Regards JG
Does this also help for weak ankles? Or is there something else recommended for weak ankles?
The tape will only reduce the symptoms - a strengthening and stability program is recommended for weak ankles, regards JG
Hey John, can I take this same technique and use it for a medial deltoid ligament sprain?
Hey Megan (are you Welsh with a name like Jones?) - yes you can tape for a Deltoid ligament - place the foot more in neutral rather than eversion like the video, regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Yes Jones is a Welsh name. My father-in-law's family is a descendant from Wales. Thank you so much for your help, I love your taping videos they make so much more sense then some of the American ones here.
Can I use this tape while practicing some sport or not?
Carlos Guilherme that’s the idea as most athletes wear the tape during their chosen sport...regards JG
You can also buy the tape from physique.co.uk for about £4-£5 a roll
Useful!
Glad you think so! Regards JG
John, Can you clarify how kinesiology taping works or point me in the direction of a relevant explanation. Thanks
Hi, great video, I have a question, all the taping work on the same principle, like reduce fatigue and promotes blood flow for faster recovery, but if I use the ice therapy do we do bad or good because if we use ice, we do it different than promote blood. What do you suggest to use it? both or just taping?
You can ice in conjunction with taping so thats not an issue, regards JG
Hi John, thanks for the helpful video. I was just wondering what this type of tape is called? i was unable to hear it clearly on the video, and also, if and where you could buy these tapes from.
Cheers.
If you look at the Full knee taping technique i have uploaded as that is ok for Osgood Schlatters
VERY USEFUL THANKS ❤️ (WOULD YOU MIND RAISING THE VOLUME?!)
Thanks for the message, regards JG
Do you have one for shoulder AC
I do so search my videos, regards JG
Hi John, I am a Paediatric Physical Therapist from India. Would you be able to share some resources for taping in Paediatrics - especially Cerebral Palsy (foot and posture) and prevention of unwanted reflexes.
Thank you in advance.
Hi, thanks for comments and its not my speciality as an Osteopath and not a Physiotherapist so we have different skill sets. regards JG
Thanks for the comment
website is above
I recently rolled my ankle, but it’s not my ankle that’s in pain, it’s more the outside of my foot is hurting when I put my weight on it. Could I use this method for the my foot?
The tape will help for sure, regards JG
You can buy the tape from my website
my mri reports tell
Longitudinal oblique tear of the peroneus brevis is seen in the midfoot, distal to the peroneal groove
can i use this tape ?
Hi Redro, thanks for the comments. You can use both taping techniques together even though they are designed to be used on their own.
Can you use the tape to support your ankle while playing basketball even if you dont have a sprain?
Also how long should the tape be left on your ankle, for instance when you treating a sprained ankle.
Thanks
really thanx for quick replying , I will go to hospital tomorrow to check because i can't sit on the ground. It's really hurt and make me cry *^*
Hi John Gibbons
I usually twist my ankles (a lot) playing soccer, and i always tie my ankles with Surgical Basics Sports Tape. Can i use both together, or just use kinesio tape?
Thanks,
If you use kinesio tape, must you still use an ankle brace? I have the DONJOY ankle brace
You can use both at the same time if you felt it helped but most people would wear either tape or a brace, regards JG
Can't see the 3rd tape's way of sticking as the videoer does not show it properly.
I have a newer video on this technique and a self taping ankle so watch that as video shows both sides, regards JG
Sorry to hear that and the taping technique is worth a try, regards JG
Hi John, I have torn both the medial and collateral ligament 4 months ago exactly. Is this technique enough to support me to get back on court? I am very eager to play. I also suffer from knee pain as I have to jump alot playing volleyball and am overwieght, does your knee taping technique helps?
is this suitable for a more severe sprain with 1 to two snapped ligaments?
John, I have an 8 year old in competitive cheer and tumbling. No sprain but has pain. Thoughts on using the kines tape for support? We tried neoprene sleeve but her ankle is too small. Thanks
I twisted my ankle month ago and it's still swollen untill this moment like the first week with pain feeling when i do any work or go down of stairs , today i bought this tape . Have any suggestion ?
Well I had ankle sprain but not so much pain , I could walk with little pain and it took around 1 week but still didn’t get healed and I went for X-ray but couldn’t see any significant damage..btw what is the best leg position while resting!!
Thanks for the comments and nature is the best healer - just give it some time and be careful and i am sure things will settle down, regards JG
Why the third one? It looks like it’s pulling the ankle back into an “inversion” position?
Its maintaining a neutral foot - ideally, regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it.
KTape generally has about 120-180% stretch so not the same to provide stability but some athletes prefer it as more comfortable and can stay on for a few days. regards JG
Cheers mate thanks for the replies
What's the length of the tape pieces?
Hope that helps, regards JG
thanks a lot mate!
Advice would be welcome thank you
Hey John i wanna know what can i do with my ankle pain because last two weeks i tried to volley a soccer ball(football) in the air but i did not time it right and i aimed my foot to the ground and when i struck the ball i instantly got pain on my achillies and lately my ankle makes a poping sound but i could walk just fine and i also have minor patella pain after or during the match can you suggest anything
I am a figure skater and I recently sprained my ankle. Is that what I should do when I return on the ice?
Angela Tu It is up to you as it might help reduce the chance of another injury. Good luck
Hello. I have a primary inversion sprain from rolling my ankle/foot coming off of a missed stair step. I have additional pain at the 5th metatarsal ball and toe. How do I additionally wrap that area to relieve pain and give support?
Hello John! I was born in 1981, with club-foot (left). I have Pain every day exactly there, just like in this Video. Is this Tape good for that as well?
Its worth trying but hard to comment as the tape will only reduce some of your pain symptoms. Good luck, regards JG
Hi John,I've had ankle injury about 3 mounths ago in soccer in the inner side of my ankle(just a little bit under my tarsus)
And I still feel the pain at the spot.I've viseted a dr but he suggested rest to me.However I need to heal it as soon as i can.
So what is you recommendation?
Thanks
I think you should see a therapist like me as I am sure they can help, taping is worth trying as it will help. Good luck
My ankle inside of right foot sprained by foot twist on side path I fall badly since 6,7 weeks or more the pain and sudden throbbing or cramping is not going away yet
The problem with an ankle sprain as that they can take months to settle down and still look swollen 6 months later, time is great healer and the tape will help. regards JG
For how much periods patient should wear these tapes
Hi, you can wear for 3-5 days at a time. regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Thank you so much sir

Very interesting , thank you very much!

Why do you use different colors? Does that make any difference?
i heard the outter tendon of my ankle snap at work today because i twisted my foot inward and it hurt alot at the time but it went away doesnt hurt its not swollen or bruised yet, its been about 12 hours, its a little bit sore if i twist it again in that dirrection it hurts ..think its torn ? there's no way I'd be able to walk if it was right? does a spranied ankle snap like that ? it sounded like a wooden stick being broken
I would try and see a therapist like me if I am honest, you can try and reduce the swelling by using the taping technique for oedema that i have on youtube as that will help, take some anti inflammatory medication and ice 3/4 x daily for next 3 days. that should reduce the pain to start with then you need to star some gentle rehab exercises as long as there is nothing else going on with the ankle joint. good luck
Hi, I sprained my ankle 6 days ago. It was/is definitely swollen. Fortunately it didn't get blue. It's painfull when I touch it and I still walk with crutches. It is not broken (I've got x-rays). Do you think I have a grade 1 or a grade 2 sprain?
Will this way of taping help an anterior ligament injury on the ankle ? Thanks
Hey John i had an ankle sprain grade II-III 2 months ago and i have to use kine tape as ankle support, should I use same technique ?
thank u :)!
The technique will work well that I demonstrate for an ankle inversion sprain
