I tried this and, surprisingly, it worked!! I’m still in awe that I can walk up and down the stairs without worrying about my Achilles tendon. Thank you so much for this video!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! About a month ago my wife injured her heel walking about a mile in the soft sand of a Cape Cod tidal flat. The pain at its worst was an 8 out of 10. It's since calmed down to a solid 3. Not disabling but a solid nuisance. She just got it diagnosed a couple of days ago; insertional calcific tendonosis. Her doctor recommended different shoes and other things but never mentioned KT tape. I've had a lifetime of sports injuries and as I"m getting older degenerative changes in my knees, shoulders and hips but I remain very determined and active in my sport. Anyway I've had great success with KT tape on whatever joint I used it so I taped her heel according to your video and her pain within 15 minutes went to zero and has stayed that way. Thanks to whoever developed this simple, non-invasive, safe and cost-effective treatment modality and thanks to you for demonstrating its application.
My wife’s physical therapist always tapes her and it helps sooo much. I found this video and bought some KT tape so I could do it for her. Your demo is exactly how the Physical Therapist does it. She must have learned from you. Thank you so very much.
Go on to our website on to our "Ask an Expert" forum and describe your injury and they'll come back with a custom application for you. You can also do the same thing on our FB page.
Ive had achilles tendonitis for the last 6 months due to a pretty strenuous running schedule. After long run days I could hardly walk down my stairs in the morning. I ran a 12K yesterday with KT tape for the first time and this morning there is very minimal pain. Its not a cure by any means, but it helped tremendously. I'm very pleased with this stuff. I'm definitely going to keep using it, because my assumption is that it will help make that tendon stronger over time and the pain will continue to decrease.
Agreed. My doctor recommended it, and it's a huge help with controlling pain after you've overdone things a bit. Helps keep me from quitting the regimen and keeps me on target.
This is exactly what I need to do. I will try it over the weekend and see how it works. I am on therapy for the pain but I think this can be helpful too.
Id like to throw in my 2 cents real quick. Ive been starting to deal with the achilles tendonitis thing for only a couple of weeks, not knowing that was what I had. I work as a steel worker and its just a lot of up and down ladders and carrying heavy objects. In trying to find a solution to my pain I came across this video. I dont have any KT Tape, (yet) but because of my job I have a bunch of electrical tape. I fallowed the same instructions and the pain just went away. I never thought it would be so immediate! As a quick solution my electrical tape saves me until payday, when im actually going to buy some of this tape. Thanks!
I have an iffy left Achilles due to an old hockey injury and I wrap the second piece AROUND the ankle at the point of pain and it works better than the video’s instructions.
Chris your videos are wonderful, thank you! I've used your "how to's" on my elbows, knees, feet - all of which extremely helpful in getting me back into action again. You're the best!
Dont know if its really helping or I just think it does. Applied it haphazardly when i first got it then watched this video and my achilles pain is reduced by 70% Thank you!
Be careful if you tape the bottom of the foot if you are planing on running or hiking. The tape pulls back and your toes want to pull the muscles in the opposite direction. Can feel like you tearing something. Maybe trying minimal tension could help...
THe advantage of the tape is that it does not create bulk or wrinkles, but beside that the use once, throw away tape is expensive and I don't see how it has any more support than a regular wrap or a velcro tape system that can be reused over and over. Again, please cite studies to show the advantage of this system over other reusable systems. Thanks!
If pain is present only at insertion point of achilles to heel on outer side, do I only use one piece of the small tape? I love KT Tape and Chris is the best. Saved my knees as well. Hope it helps this new ankle pain.
I'm no doctor, however I was advised not to use anti inflammatory medication. I had a grade two tear of my achillies tendon right where it meats the soleus muscle in the calf. Personally I would seek a very well known sonographor and an orthopaedic doctor to help in recovery. Once the orthopaedic surgeon has given you the all clear that is the recommended time to start rehabilitation.
This was so so so helpful. Thank you! I also appreciate that you advised seeking medical advice if you're still really hurting. Great eduction, solid advice. Thanks and good job!
Thanks, Noel! So glad to hear! Stay tuned - we're about to release several dozen brand new videos that are completely updated. They're going to be awesome...
This is a temporary fix, do eccentric heel drops for a permanent fix. If you only have a minor injury, it will only take a couple of weeks of eccentrics to fix.
hey! I was wondering, and this may be a stupid question but is this waterproof? meaning if I take a shower will it still be ok, or should I add another strip after the shower? thank u!
I use rock tape. I've heard they have a waterproof version, but the one I buy isn't. I do still wear it swimming. Generally it will survive an hour in the pool but you'll definitely need to replace it at the end of your swim.
The tape will stay applied in water, but on body parts that are exposed to high forces of water can sometimes be difficult. The flow of the water creates lifting on the leading edge of the tape that is overlapped. Once this happens, it does not take long before the water continues to lift the tape up.
The idea behind the taping is to help provide support, or in other words take some of the load off of the tendon to help recovery. That is what the first strip is for. Then you can use the last two strips near where it hurts. Those second strips also keep the first strip in place.
I have been using KT tape for my achilles tendonitis but with a different cut method. (where you cut the tape in half up top and the two sides go up each side of the calf muscle in a V pattern.) I'm extremely impressed with the results so far. It almost eliminates my pain entirely when I play basketball. This works even better than my achilles compression brace (which I don't think reaches quite low enough to where my pain resides). I will be trying out this new application method on my next taping since it seems to use less tape than the other method.
@@AmazingYouPhotoBooth I felt like I had more support with the cut shown in this video. The thing that helped me the best though was rehabbing it with eccentric heel drops. 3 sets of 15, twice a day. By 2018 my pain got worse and the eccentric heel drops took care of it but it is a long process.
Why would you dorsiflex your foot and tape in an elongated position. The objective of the tape is to reduce the amount of stretch and workload the Achilles does at impact. And the only way taping increases circulation is if it holds in body heat - there's nothing magical in the tape itself, unless it's coated similar to a back plaster.
The tape has stretch on it, so fully elongating the muscle and then applying the tape allows the tape to assist with plantar flexion, thus taking stress off the tendon
Thought the same thing Jack. Ima just do it like my awesome trainer used to for football. This.....Im not sure what to think of this method. Ill try both on the kid and see what he thinks is best.

They are all 10 inch precut strips. The shorter pieces are just full strips that have been cut in half.

No, taping is not a crutch. It minimizes tendon stress or workload until it heals completely and then you won't need taping anymore.
Thanks for posting this, how long would you recommend leaving the tape on? When would I apply it?
We always recommend applying the tape at least 1 hour before activity for best adhesion to the skin. Tape can be kept on up to 7 days as needed!
This is very helpful. Thank you.
