Achilles Tendonitis
The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It connects the calf muscles to the heel and is active during almost all activities including walking, jumping, and swimming. This dense tendon can withstand large forces, but can become inflamed and painful during periods of overuse. Pain results from inflammation (tendonitis) or a degenerating tendon (tendinosis).
Tendinitis typically develops after abrupt changes in activity or training level, use of poorly fit or worn footwear, or training on uneven or dense running surfaces. Overuse prior to sufficient training is generally the cause. This is due to forces 8-10 times the body weight acting on the tendon during physical activity.
Achilles injuries range from inflammation to a breakdown in the tendon. Pain is generally felt low on the back of the heel due to the low vascularity and susceptibility for inflammation. Pain higher on the Achilles is generally more muscular pain and less tendonitis. If swollen spots or knots are found along the tendon, or if the tendon feels jagged, cease activity and seek professional medical care.
Along with proper rest, icing, and anti-inflammatory medication, KT Tape can help relieve this pain and reduce the inflammation along this crucial tendon. Though even walking can become painful with Achilles injuries, KT Tape can get you moving again.

in India we rub 3part Haldi (turmeric) Power mixed with one part water (or elephant saliva) onto the affected area. It does nothing.
Hahahahaha
😂😂😂
Had us in the first half 😂😂😂
😂🤣🤣😂😅
😆
I tried this and, surprisingly, it worked!! I’m still in awe that I can walk up and down the stairs without worrying about my Achilles tendon. Thank you so much for this video!
So glad to hear that!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! About a month ago my wife injured her heel walking about a mile in the soft sand of a Cape Cod tidal flat. The pain at its worst was an 8 out of 10. It's since calmed down to a solid 3. Not disabling but a solid nuisance.
She just got it diagnosed a couple of days ago; insertional calcific tendonosis. Her doctor recommended different shoes and other things but never mentioned KT tape. I've had a lifetime of sports injuries and as I"m getting older degenerative changes in my knees, shoulders and hips but I remain very determined and active in my sport. Anyway I've had great success with KT tape on whatever joint I used it so I taped her heel according to your video and her pain within 15 minutes went to zero and has stayed that way.
Thanks to whoever developed this simple, non-invasive, safe and cost-effective treatment modality and thanks to you for demonstrating its application.
My wife’s physical therapist always tapes her and it helps sooo much. I found this video and bought some KT tape so I could do it for her. Your demo is exactly how the Physical Therapist does it. She must have learned from you. Thank you so very much.
Thank you Chris Harper, your directions are the best.
Check out our website. There is a ton of info there that will answer all your questions.
Well made. Easy to see and concise instructions. Thank you
This was very helpful. I’m a hockey player that is currently suffering from Achilles pain and had to cut my hockey season short due to this injury
Go on to our website on to our "Ask an Expert" forum and describe your injury and they'll come back with a custom application for you. You can also do the same thing on our FB page.
Chris your videos are wonderful, thank you! I've used your "how to's" on my elbows, knees, feet - all of which extremely helpful in getting me back into action again. You're the best!

This is my go to, I do soooo much walking at my job on rough un even terrain and my tendons kill me this tape is a life saver👍👍👍
This is exactly what I need to do. I will try it over the weekend and see how it works. I am on therapy for the pain but I think this can be helpful too.
Very helpful, thank u!
This is very helpful. Thank you.
I have an iffy left Achilles due to an old hockey injury and I wrap the second piece AROUND the ankle at the point of pain and it works better than the video’s instructions.
Id like to throw in my 2 cents real quick. Ive been starting to deal with the achilles tendonitis thing for only a couple of weeks, not knowing that was what I had. I work as a steel worker and its just a lot of up and down ladders and carrying heavy objects. In trying to find a solution to my pain I came across this video. I dont have any KT Tape, (yet) but because of my job I have a bunch of electrical tape. I fallowed the same instructions and the pain just went away. I never thought it would be so immediate! As a quick solution my electrical tape saves me until payday, when im actually going to buy some of this tape. Thanks!
TheWulfbane FYI electrical tape when applied to your skin is a carcinogen.
T 31 him having it on his skin for a day or 2 isn’t gunna give him cancer💀
Man really? I have very high pain pls help me. I have to keep that tape 4-5 days continueosly?
Dont know if its really helping or I just think it does. Applied it haphazardly when i first got it then watched this video and my achilles pain is reduced by 70% Thank you!
Going to wrap mine this evening. The pain has been horrible. Thank you for this video.
Happy to hear it is helpful! we also have an updated tutorial you can use here - ua-cam.com/video/gGwHZDjktUU/v-deo.html
I just found out i got old and my "exercising" is leading to all these painful discoveries.
Thanks for good tutorials on taping up properly. 👍
Happy to help!
Ive had achilles tendonitis for the last 6 months due to a pretty strenuous running schedule. After long run days I could hardly walk down my stairs in the morning. I ran a 12K yesterday with KT tape for the first time and this morning there is very minimal pain. Its not a cure by any means, but it helped tremendously. I'm very pleased with this stuff. I'm definitely going to keep using it, because my assumption is that it will help make that tendon stronger over time and the pain will continue to decrease.
Agreed. My doctor recommended it, and it's a huge help with controlling pain after you've overdone things a bit. Helps keep me from quitting the regimen and keeps me on target.
Samantha Converse i
maybe you should rest and stop running
If you will send an email to support@kttape . com they will be able to give you some additional info.
great video thanks and deffentily recomrnd
Excellent ...
Yes. It will give you added support and stability and help reduce pain.
Great video. Everything was explained very well.
muy practico y didactico ,gracias
de nada!
Thank you
Could the tape on the bottom of the foot cause pressure on plantar fascia? I fell some strain there while the Achilles pain went away. Thanks
Thanks, going to try this out. Want to get back to the soccerfield as quick as possible. But of course starting slow.
can you update us on your AT condition of four years ago? Have you completely healed and what worked for you?
No problem. Let us know how it goes!
Be careful if you tape the bottom of the foot if you are planing on running or hiking. The tape pulls back and your toes want to pull the muscles in the opposite direction. Can feel like you tearing something. Maybe trying minimal tension could help...
Thanks. This was what I was looking for!! I don't want to cause more problems =/
hi been using oxide tape... can this tape be used in a running event due to up my rehabilitation soon ...
Thank u
i have torn yet repaired achilles bilaterally. i am still active in sports that require ankle stability. so could I tape for achilles tendonitis and ankle stability? Is there a hybrid between the two.
THe advantage of the tape is that it does not create bulk or wrinkles, but beside that the use once, throw away tape is expensive and I don't see how it has any more support than a regular wrap or a velcro tape system that can be reused over and over. Again, please cite studies to show the advantage of this system over other reusable systems. Thanks!
LOVE this stuff I had instant relief once it was on! Thank you!
Devon L hi where I can buy
Devon L how is the name?
If you use the Pro and apply it correctly it should stay on for 5-7 days.
Can I tape my Achilles like this and still play football as a prevention
@@JamesBrown-er6or did u try it
I dont get why its better with the foot dorsiflexed. Shouldnt we be trying to protect the achiles feom over stretching?
I’ve had really bad achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis for about 2 years now, this provides a temporary relief good for at night but not amazing, still helpful tho
This was so so so helpful. Thank you! I also appreciate that you advised seeking medical advice if you're still really hurting. Great eduction, solid advice. Thanks and good job!
Thanks, Noel! So glad to hear! Stay tuned - we're about to release several dozen brand new videos that are completely updated. They're going to be awesome...
Here's our new Achilles Tendonitis video: ua-cam.com/video/T5NUbNkB_oA/v-deo.html
They are all 10 inch precut strips. The shorter pieces are just full strips that have been cut in half.
hey! I was wondering, and this may be a stupid question but is this waterproof? meaning if I take a shower will it still be ok, or should I add another strip after the shower? thank u!
Yes it's waterproof.
yeah it is
Yes it is water proof
I use rock tape. I've heard they have a waterproof version, but the one I buy isn't. I do still wear it swimming. Generally it will survive an hour in the pool but you'll definitely need to replace it at the end of your swim.
The tape will stay applied in water, but on body parts that are exposed to high forces of water can sometimes be difficult. The flow of the water creates lifting on the leading edge of the tape that is overlapped. Once this happens, it does not take long before the water continues to lift the tape up.
What is the type of the two used taps plz?
Cipro antibiotics can cause achilles & other tendon problems. It has happened to me.
Did KT tape help you? I've recently used it for my runner's hip but my husband has tight Achilles due to Cipro and thought about taping them.
Correct! I just commented back on your comment on the old video and recommended you use this video. This is the one! Let us know how it works for you.
Gotta love how the text covers the whole foot
What?
Thanks for posting this, how long would you recommend leaving the tape on? When would I apply it?
We always recommend applying the tape at least 1 hour before activity for best adhesion to the skin. Tape can be kept on up to 7 days as needed!
*Also suggest **_Treat Your Own Achilles Tendonitis_** at Amazon for resistant cases.*
Wow, that was an excellent demonstration.
Should you do this before stretches if you have AT
Are you still able to point the foot with this. I am a ballet dancer and wanting to tape my achilles since it can have pain, but I still need to be able to point my foot.
MakeupandDance 15 yes you can
Do I want to point my toes down or up when applying the first piece of tape from the heel to the back of the calf? I always thought it was best to point them down, bit in the video is says up.
Can you tape this over the under wrap that's used with conventional tape jobs ?
mrtp nah I was told to shave my leg/calf as it wouldn't work properly - usually wear under wrap to protect my hairs lol
If you have multiple pain points along the tendon, do you place a tape on each?
Yes
Dlaczego nie ma tlumaczenia i napisy sa na klejonej modxr
Thank you, found this very useful
It will help. Apply it to clean, dry skin and it will help a lot. Let us know how it goes.
Brilliant! Thank you.
+Theresa You've been reported for spam. Thanks.
How long until you can start walking on a ruptured Achilles with no cast, no surgery just Ice and rest?
U can’t walk lol if u don’t cast or boot it
I have two rolls of KT Tape, and on neither of them does the paper backing crack open like in the video. It's very difficult to peel the tape off the paper.
Is there a reason why this did not work for me? It did work for my cousins shin but I feel no change/support for my ankle.
Every body is different, but you may find these revised instructions helpful as well: ua-cam.com/video/gGwHZDjktUU/v-deo.html
I don’t get any pain while walking or running without any shoes. I only get pain when I wear shoes or football boots (I play a high standard of football) and do a lot of running. Anyone know why?
Stand on the back of your boots as they might be too rigid and tight on your Achilles....it worked for me
Awesome, thanks for the comment!
I belive i have this but my dad eont get it check out
I have been using KT tape for my achilles tendonitis but with a different cut method. (where you cut the tape in half up top and the two sides go up each side of the calf muscle in a V pattern.) I'm extremely impressed with the results so far. It almost eliminates my pain entirely when I play basketball. This works even better than my achilles compression brace (which I don't think reaches quite low enough to where my pain resides). I will be trying out this new application method on my next taping since it seems to use less tape than the other method.
Which method worked the best? This or the V cut?
@@AmazingYouPhotoBooth I felt like I had more support with the cut shown in this video. The thing that helped me the best though was rehabbing it with eccentric heel drops. 3 sets of 15, twice a day. By 2018 my pain got worse and the eccentric heel drops took care of it but it is a long process.
Make a video on your feet taping please.
@@mannyg35 No thanks, too many foot fetishists out there...
The Package instructions are not the same for this issue
True. Follow the video. It's the most updated version.
Hello, thank you for great video. I am observing issue with my Achilles tendon and would like to try this procedure. I need to buy this tape, what kind of tape do you use in this video? Is it cotton or pro? Thank you for your help.
does this work only for healing or you can do sports with the tape on
I have a more extreme version of tendonitis and i play soccer 4 times a week with this tape on and it helps!
First my ACL and now this
Thought you were supposed to point your toes/foot 'downwards' when applying the tape (with stretch) to the tendon?
This updated tutorial should be a bit more clear in answering your question - check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/gGwHZDjktUU/v-deo.html
I'm no doctor, however I was advised not to use anti inflammatory medication. I had a grade two tear of my achillies tendon right where it meats the soleus muscle in the calf. Personally I would seek a very well known sonographor and an orthopaedic doctor to help in recovery. Once the orthopaedic surgeon has given you the all clear that is the recommended time to start rehabilitation.
How did u recover from your tear what was your treatment
I got this condition from driving 500 miles a week with a manual clutch.
@@AH-hz5xc I got mine from masturbating 5 to 6 times a day lmao it was repetitive in nature lol
@@poppycocksa Your head must hurt then
I have the same. How do you fix yours?
This is a temporary fix, do eccentric heel drops for a permanent fix. If you only have a minor injury, it will only take a couple of weeks of eccentrics to fix.
No, taping is not a crutch. It minimizes tendon stress or workload until it heals completely and then you won't need taping anymore.
Plz help me😰😢😢
Would this help for someone going back to sport after an achilles rupture?
Yes. Let us know how it goes!
+KT Tape Thank you for this video... I am in my last stages of using the walking boot before I am back to walking on both feet. Looking to be running around September. I will be following your channel and try this will I am working.
+Zara Cookson Don't do it !!! you might make it worst, get an MRI scan ASAP.
There are several factors in plantar foot treatment. One resource I found which succeeds in merging these is the Fergs Foot Formula (check it out on google) without a doubt the most helpful treatment that I have ever seen.look at the amazing information .
I overdid the running thing, ruptured the achilles, and had to cool it for a couple months. Doc recommended your tape to help me cope with pain associated with rehab'ing and getting back to 100%. Thanks doc! So, Zara, I'd recommend making sure your doctor has checked you out and okayed you getting back into sport, but the tape definitely helps.
It won't weaken anything. It will support and stabilize. Let us know how it goes!
I think I might have to try this, I suffered a grade 2 sprain of my ankle and I think I damaged my Achilles in the process. I can still play basketball, by my heel has a lingering pain associated with it. Thank you for the help.
Can someone suffering from Achilles Tendonitis recover completely...I have been resting since the past 7 to 8 months still not recovered.
You might have ruptured it
the day you wrote that comment, in that same month I injured my tendon and it still hasn't gone I still have to deal with the fucking injury. do you still have it? how did you get rid of it?
You guys should see a Physio they can loosen your calf and ultrasound your tendon. It’s a long road but with rest or cross training like cycling you can run pain free again!
tore mine.....doctor operated and it is still very painful.........choose a surgeon wisely
I’ve had it for 4 years now
yes I can finally play lacrosse
You still suck though.
should I strap it as well please
Can i put this on before a run? Will sweat cause the tape to lose its grip?
Yes. And no.
I did muddy runs and swims with them on and showers
Would this also be an effective treatment for achilles TENDINOSIS?
Mine won’t stick
Where can i buy these tapes?
Houdini Lucas walmart or big 5
works! Thanks!
Can I find this this in india
Here is a list of our international distributors: www.kttape.com/kt-tape-international-sales
Do you need this tape?
how long can you leave the tape on for?
3-7 days for the KT Tape Pro.
KT Tape How long will regular KT tape stick for?
how does it work? i dont really get it.
i have inflimation in my achillies tendon and i was wondering if this will help?
Where is the empirical proof this stuff works? I have some minor Achilles stiffness in my left but had Achilles surgery in my right recently. K-Tape didn't do anything I have noticed that would relieve or help stiffness. This seems a Placebo at best.
I am have a difficult time getting the tape to stick
I would follow the video.
Why would you dorsiflex your foot and tape in an elongated position. The objective of the tape is to reduce the amount of stretch and workload the Achilles does at impact. And the only way taping increases circulation is if it holds in body heat - there's nothing magical in the tape itself, unless it's coated similar to a back plaster.
Its NOTHING to do with support...its so the tape ripples and pulls the skin away from the tendon and lets more blood in..so heals quicker.
The tape has stretch on it, so fully elongating the muscle and then applying the tape allows the tape to assist with plantar flexion, thus taking stress off the tendon
Thought the same thing Jack. Ima just do it like my awesome trainer used to for football. This.....Im not sure what to think of this method. Ill try both on the kid and see what he thinks is best.
Where can I buy it?
sporting good store like Sports Authority. Walmart also carries it in their sports section.
Mauilyn I get it at CVS.
Arturo Gallegos
You can get it the cheapest on Ebay. That's where I purchase mine.
Mtha is for the tape job tips… but there’s no way a tape will increase circulation lol
I have a slight tear in my achilles tendon in the back of the heel is causing a lot of inflammation pain burning with this tape help me?
Where can u buy kt tape?
At the store.
Amazon lol
Megan Fluent walmart or big 5
Can I use this tapping method while running? I have been taping my ankle and achilles tendons with my kt tape while running, but not with this method.
+Kathy7671 If doesn't restrict your ankle joint movement you can put the tape on if you want that's okay.
Lot of runner don't like it during running because in might feel a little .uncomfortable
it works! i play soccer 4 times a week with this tape!
doesn't work if you actually want to run. It doesn't support that kind of activity. It stretches-hello...
