    Grinder Golem. For years it was a terrible monster, you lose your normal summon to give your opponent a sizeable beatstick for 2 measly tokens in attack position. Suddenly, it has the biggest swing of power the card has ever had when Link Summoning became a mechanic, and Grinder Golem has no once per turn on its Token Generation. Akashic Magician, Security Dragon, and (pre-errata) Firewall Dragon were able to bounce the card back to your hand for more tokens and that is just the start of the combo with the monster appearing in a few meta decks, Orcust and SPYRAL being the most notable with the latter even reaching Tier Zero status. Having the card in your hand at that time is a near certainty for victory and creating a flood of Link Monsters your opponent can’t handle.

      Upstart Goblin. Back then that card was a niche choice in attempting to "turbo" your plays since most of the meta was stall and wait, plus it gave 1k LP to your opponent.
      However, the game became faster and more turbo especially with the creation of "one card combo" plays, people started playing full set of the card just to have access to your combo as soon as possible, and this adding the fact Konami released its modern version field spell form,Chicken Game which allowed "thinning" your deck from 40 cards to 34. It eventually became an issue in both formats which led to the card limitation.

    I'd argue painful choice was always broken. Even if it's the worst possible scenario on its release, and you're dumping 5 vanilla monsters, you've effectively just resolved a copy of ROTA that also thins your deck by 4 cards. Those are 4 less bricks for you to draw on your way to draw your copy of Pot of Greed, graceful charity, or any of the other insanely busted cards of the era.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 Рік тому +10

      Honestly, I believe it was actually meant to be broken in the first place because it's so obviously broke. The theoretical downside is that one will never see those 4 cards again without recoursion, but the answer was always to just...choose cards you want in the graveyard instead. The one time it was used in the anime, it was used for exactly that purpose too, so even the IP itself knew it's bs.

      It’s weird to me painful choice was not in every single deck in a meta that had 3 whole ass revival staples
      Edit: especially because most decks at the time were already playing as many as they could of all 3, those 3 being monster reborn, call of the haunted and premature burial, like there was a pretty good chance of you activated painful and dumped a bunch of monsters that you had a revive you could probably use immediately after activation, also most of the monsters from invasion of chaos can special themselves from the hand by banishing monsters from the GY

    Graceful Charity is even worse than you make it sound, as it doesn't discard two of the cards you drew, it discards two FROM YOUR HAND... meaning if you're holding a crappy hand and draw 3 cards you want to keep, you can discard two bad cards you already had. Alternately, two cards that would activate when they go, or while in, the graveyard.
    It can be seriously powerful for such effects, especially given that the discarding is a card effect, not a cost. It was an exceptionally potent in decks like Dark World.

    Hard once per turns are a restriction that makes it so only one copy of a card name can be used in a turn.
    There is a soft once per turn, and it just means that the effect can't be used while that card is face up on the field. Which does mean you can bounce a card to use it's effect again.
    Didn't see this explanation, and wanted those who don't play, or are just starting out, to understand.

    • @baileydombroskie3046
      @baileydombroskie3046 Рік тому +1

      U r partially right about SOPT. Any effect that has a SOPT can only be used once per turn per copy. But if the card leaves the zone it activates it’s effect in, and the zone it goes to if it sends itself somewhere else as a cost, then it returns to the zone it activates in, it can be used again.
      This means if a monsters effect has a SOPT effect to do something while on field, each copy that exists on field can use the effect and later on if the monster leaves the field and then returns, it is treated as a new copy of the card. But this also means that a card that lets say for example banishes itself from GY as cost for its SOPT effect, it means it has now already left it’s activation zone so a SOPT clause basically means nothing as it cudnt activate its effect again anyways. U still wud need to return it to its activation zone to use it again tho.
      Due to this characteristic SOPT effects can still be used in infinite loops but to a lesser extent.

    Games with set rotation absolute have power creep as well. Pokémon has no official non-rotating format anymore, and the cards have gotten crazy powerful compared to the early sets, or even just 10 years ago.
    Same thing with Magic, take Grizzly Bears for example. It's a vanilla 2/2 for 2 mana (a green and 1 one of any colour), but used to be a solid 2 drop for green back in the day, since it fits nicely into the mana curve. Then over the years we got stronger and stronger 2 mana creatures, the strongest of which was Tarmogoyf for a while (like a few solid years). Recently it got so powercrept that it's now considered too slow.
    Don't get me wrong though, YGO's power creep is very much on its own scale, but it's over overstated.

    One thing about some powerful boss monsters is that they were often balanced around being difficult to summon, but then Konami later printed a card or cards that made it really easy to summon them quickly. For example Herald of Perfection was a Level 12 Ritual Monster, which previously meant that you had to sink in a lot of resources to summon it (12 Levels). It didn't really do much because the archetype it was meant for wasn't very good. However then they printed Drytron years later which bypassed the need to use Levels to Ritual Summon and could use ATK instead, and all the Drytron monsters happened to have more ATK than Herald did.
    Same thing happened with Rhongomyniad and Bamboozling Gossip Shadow, and probably several other monsters that ended up getting banned.

    I might be a weird one, but I actually enjoyed the game alot more back in the day, bc it took alot longer to make plays, and sometimes it meant waiting however many turns to make a play, that you took time and effort to set up, and sometimes it became an uphill battle, when your opponent countered with stronger cards, then you did the same.
    Nowadays, people can win in 1-2 turns, taking 15-20 min to make a play, meaning sometimes you never really got a chance to play the game. Not that winning isn't a good thing, but man, at least wait a few turns before taking 35 min in a turn to make an unavoidable attack 😂

      We re in 2023, pain full choice, GC, safe return, maxx c... all those cards and many other needs to come back errata HOPT for all of them. Some decks need those cards to be better.

      @@jofx4051 I said that cards also needs to be errata. Inferno ain't go not nothing to do in the banlist btw. Tidal either (would be perfect combo with ghoti.) And you can literraly do this with all cards.
      Konami need to adapt the ban's cards to the new meta. For example it would be decent if Kitkallos could use only one effect per turn, it can come back without a problem. IIts up to them to do the right choice for the players. But instead, they're killi their deck.

    Guessing the next banned card is evenly matched since there’s no play around and you can play it again if you have another in your hand once it gets negated

    • @gotouchsomegrasstoday
      @gotouchsomegrasstoday Рік тому +8

      "No playing around", "Negated", you just contradicted yourself in the same sentence. The counter to evenly matched is to just end on a negate or set Spell/Trap that can negate it. Evenly matched is no where near as powerful as dark ruler no more or super poly which can easily break a full board of negates while going second simply because they can't be negated by normal mean.

    • @sardinee4564
      @sardinee4564 Рік тому +2

      @@gotouchsomegrasstoday Just ending on a negate isn't something every deck can do, some decks are control orientated or use protection and interruption instead of negation, evenly matched promotes setting up huge negate boards that evenly matched does nothing towards, because it just get's negated, but against other strategies it completely ruins them because it gets around all forms of protection and there is almost no way to interact with or recover your banished cards. Dark ruler no more when combined with evenly matched pretty much results in a ko, because now even if you did set up a negate it doesn't matter. It just leads to a toxic game where because you drew one or two cards you now remove all but one card on your opponents field with no easy way to play against it or around it other than just set up a negate board and hope for the best, the card isn't ban-worthy because it is entirely too powerful but because it promotes toxic, uninteractive, I drew the "out" type bullshit gameplay that is not at all fun.

    • @gotouchsomegrasstoday
      @gotouchsomegrasstoday Рік тому

      @@sardinee4564 It sounds like you have a problem with modern yugioh, not with evenly matched. You think if evenly matched is banned, people wouldn't put up a full board of negate? The negates aren't for evenly matched, they are for denying your opponent's ability to play their combo so you can kill them next turn. The reason going second cards are strong is precisely to counteract how big the advantage of going first is. This is also why going second cards will likely never get banned, otherwise going second player just straight up lose.

      @@gotouchsomegrasstoday Do I have a problem with the current game, yes, does this have anything to do with me believing evenly matched is bad game design, no. Evenly matched is just a stupid card, it takes no thought to play, has no cost aside from giving up the battle phase (which is hardly an issue), isn't even once per turn and just invalidates card protection and leaves little room for recovery. A card that is a better example of a balanced "overpowered" card is droplets, it gets over negate boards by being unrespondable to the card types sent, this also gives it a potentially heavy cost of discards and requires better timing and thought to use, additionally it only negates the monsters for one turn and does nothing to back-row like evenly matched. This is a better example of what a card made to break boards should like. The fact that a card like evenly matched even has to exist just shows how terrible the game has become over time, it's like some cope that it makes the game fair for both players when in actuality it just further pushes a game which is decided on the second turn.

      eh, it would make chains a resource, one of the main things I enjoy about the game is the lack of a true 'resource' like you have in magic. 10 chain limit per turn feels like it could just be called mana / magic power / etc. Would limit the number of interactions so heavily. It wouldn't really remove OTK decks so much as limit the creativity for longer chains to compete against them
      Also, consider something like Flunder where getting one small bird out leads to a 4-5+ chain
