Not gonna lie, I still tear up. Some unspecified apocalyptic event was about to wipe out most, if not all, of humanity and her dad was apparently a brilliant scientist, but not brilliant enough to build a spacecraft big enough for two in the time he had left. She's in suspended animation and potentially within an artificial mindscape to keep her consciousness alive and healthy for as long as possible, praying against the odds that something or someone will intervene and save her. Or at least that's my head-canon. She could just be a very lucid dreamer.
its definitely a post apocalyptic event that wiped out most if not all of humanity on earth (considering the size of the object likely all). There is a translation floating around from the message she received, it was from her father and is great for giving context (note I did not translate this myself "To Rin From: Dad There was far too little time left after you were born. I wonder how much love I was able to show after your mother passed... Seeing you cheerful and well gave your old man courage. It really would have been better if we could have gone together, but I couldn't make it work. I thought I wanted you to forget everything and go forward...knowing you, you'll be okay. You'll realize your loneliness, and surely remember me. I believe that you'll grow strong and read this letter. I wish we could have made more memories. I'm sorry. When you were little you probably didn't understand well, but now you should. I'll say the words from that day once more."
Didn't translate it myself but despite not being able to read a couple of those words, this one i found on redit did translate correctly everything i managed to make of the letter myself, so it is probably accurate on the rest too. The message is something along these lines: To Rin From: Dad There was far too little time left after you were born. I wonder how much love I was able to show after your mother passed... Seeing you cheerful and well gave your old man courage. It really would have been better if we could have gone together, but I couldn't make it work. Joking aside, as a creator this song HITS me hard. Isn't that what we do, really - make things to help others? Mentor and encourage others? We give others shelter, as we were sheltered.
I appreciate your reaction. What got to me in addition to everything else mentioned is the dramatic rising of the stakes. Think about it: The first time you watch this, you are just as clueless as the girl is. She checks her tablet, no messages for 2538 days. You think to yourself "Okay, she is lonely". You'll then start hoping that she'll find company, or receive a message. But the truth is way worse than that. She is undeniably, completely alone. More alone than a lone astronaut on the wrong side of the moon with no signal. It's not even a question of distance to another person, because there is literally nobody else to measure distance to. Watching your kneejerk reactions and wishes for her to resolve her situation get completely OBLITERATED once you realize the truth. I couldn't imagine actually having to live out this scenario after learning this. The machine's purpose, to entertain, preserve and mystify, has now simply become a mere distraction, its majesty stripped away after you know where you really are. Her shelter is also her prison. The dad didn't want her to remember the truth BECAUSE it would literally turn his greatest gift to her into something terrifying. But as he says in the message to her, he had a feeling she'd remember anyways, so he prepared the motivation in anticipation. The only possible hope is that the ship is on autopilot to some planet. But let's not ignore all the challenges that comes with that, even if such a planet exists. 10/10. Best and worst dad simultaneously.
Damn. I had tears. Loss is a weak spot for me, especially when unsurpassable sacrifices were made. This was lovely, and the song was great. Lived Everything Will Go On, and with this, I can see why Porter has so many fans. Also....A-1 Pictures....I will ALWAYS be a fan of them. I mean...ring Sword Art Online, baby!
My general thought is that an apocalyptic event was about to happen and her father was part of the project to save humanity. The problem is, to make a ridiculously long journey, you need a pilot or someone half conscious to provide direction for the ship. Dude used his daughter for that, so I personally think the song is alluding to the fact that she was designated the pilot of a colony ship with thousands, if not millions of people inside, and her job is to be just awake enough to react when the ship reaches it's goal. In essence, she's the one hope for humanity's future.
Ooh! A reaction to Shelter. Been ages since I last saw this~ *proceeds to have a blast of nostalgia* Ahhh imagination is like, THE number one weirdest topic for me because mine kind of... Doesn't work apparently? XD I've been an artist and 'very slow writing' fanfic writer for years so I've been told I have 'so much imagination' a lot but I remember for years kinda just shrugging off anyone saying stuff like 'picture this thing in your mind' thinking it was like metaphors or conceptual associations like 'oh water is being brought up as calming because its cool and comfortable and can sound really nice' only to one day offhandedly mention my confusion as to why people say stuff like that so often to my dad and realizing at his slowly growing bafflement that he could actually, like, picture an image in his head and 'see' stuff, like what a green apple might look like compared to red apple as opposed to seeing nothing but the inside of his own eyelids, or 'hear' music he'd heard once in his head as opposed to memorising the timing of the beats and that it 'had these kind of sounds in it' and was good/bad/weird in x mood kind of way (sadly I am not free from getting 'earworms' stuck in my head; it's just that instead of actual music, my brain starts looping the words or timing bits I remember instead. May contribute to me not finding it hard to 'replace' them with other music though). I can still see and hear in dreams sometimes though (which is apparently fairly common for those with aphantasia like me) so seeing stuff like in this short, my first instinct is either 'oh wow, reality warping via tablet and thoughts' or 'she's in a lucid dream/coma?' rather than 'oh damn she's imaginative' but damn its fun to see how other people interpret this~ Absolutely blows my mind people can actually *do* that instead of as opposed to having to draw out a concept and hoping it looks as cool/beautiful as the idea of it seemed when the concept was being thought up and stuff like that~ XD Ahhh and there are the feels
Sad fact: The girl, Rin is 17 & as you saw she got no messages in 7 years I think you can see where this is going.(Beef sure did) Also you can see Earth’s destruction while she’s unconscious in space in one scene.
Every time I watch this I'm reminded there was an excellent Shelter/RWBY crossover fanfic that was absolutely ruined by the creator deciding to use it as a religious soapbox.
Since Porter Robinson is a MusicProducer and DJ, being able to make a full length feature is probably not exactly on his radar :D However, the story how he, as a very much american indie musician got to work with A1 on this venture is actually really inspiring. Dunno if you noticed and that is why you are here now, but, in case you didn't, for newest *Star Guardian* Cinematic (One you also reacted to) he wrote the Song _Everything goes on_ Shelter was probably the project that got him on the map for a lot of people but i might be wrong about that. Still a masterwork by all people involved 6 years later (^ . ^) Also. Little tiny thing you might wanna cry about later. Given teh animation of Rin as her father passes her at the shrine I suspect she mouths: "Father" in Japanese. Anyone who knows for sure is free to corrobarate or correct me ofc.
Damn it! I knew I shouldn´t have clicked on this video. Now I am crying my eyes out again. The theme of loneliness really gets me. To be perfectly honest to me what the father did is torture. Just me being a prisoner in my own head for years? Oh hell no! So yeah. I cry not because of what the father did for her but the loneliness this girl must feel. Also great analysis. Not really much to add there.
Sorry I don't have a link, but people have fully translated the letter Rin gets at the end into English. Should not be hard to look up. o7 Rin. Must protec. 😭
I want to say I watched this when it came out... the deja vu is just an extra layer of unease on an already intentionally disquieting concept. Still great.
I recall reading a crossover fanfiction combining Shelter with RWBY (essentially her ship landed on Remnant several years prior to Volume 1) Can't recall the title or where I read it unfortunately. 8(
Total sidebar, you might really enjoy the anime movie Pompo The Cinephile .... it really zooms in on how important editing is to the crafting of a good movie....how much is filmed vs. how much actually makes it to the big screen. It's a movie-within-a-movie kind of story.
Anime does not work by drawing every frame nowadays, including back when Shelter was done... The keyframes for the movement are indeed drawn "by hand" but the twinning (inbetweening meaning the frames in between those key frames) is done by computer... so not every frame was drawn manually... then again... the picture did have A LOT of animation so there were WAY MORE keyframes than there would be in a usual anime episode... a 20 minute anime episode usually has around 3000 frames (remember there are a lot of still frames at many points in an episode)... A decent enough approximation (in my very personal opinion and based on previous research for mere curiosity) would be that you would need 2 keyframes for every 12 frames, those 2 being the beginning and end of a movement... in this case since it has great animation lets say it takes twice as many key frames being conservative... so from 6min 30fps, we get 10800 frames, of which maybe 25% are movement = 2700 Movement frames, of which 1/3 is a keyframe... that makes it 900 Key frames... Assuming each artist takes 30min in each frame, we are talking 450hrs just working in the drawn keyframes of animation, not accounting for mistakes, redos, or changes... in the animation process only of course, coloring and backgrounds are a whole other thing...

Some people want this to be a real movie or anime, I disagree tho, the reason it works is because it's short. It wouldn't work as a full series
