One of the most talented set of hands to ever pick up a guitar. RIP Eddie. Gone but never forgotten.
If he's in Heaven now can you imagine how he's playing his harp?
R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen 😭😭😭
@@RageBaby587 IM DYING
I could play this.
If I had talent and nine hands.
Fuck yeah seen him live 4 times
Eddie Van Halen didn't learn to play this way, He invented it. Before EVH this didn't exist.
Eddie was the GOAT...There will never be another like him and is going down in history for changing the way electric guitar is played... R.I.P. EVH
And yet his idol was Allan Holdsworth.
Eddie didn't invent tapping, but he sure as hell perfected it.
Shout out to Steve Hackett!
yea not even close, he cant do multi finger tapping while sweeping like modern shredders can
@@WookieWarriorz that’s the thing about evolution. I mean it would be really fucked up if new generations couldn’t improve a single thing from the previous. With that being said, billions can cover stuff, sure, but there will always be one writer, even smoke on the water. I myself find Hendrix stuff pretty… average, but his influence is undeniable
@@peterthompson8014 Shout out to Vittorio Camardese!
@@WookieWarriorz That's true that there are guys doing amazing things with tapping now, beyond Eddie, but it all started with him. They only do what they do because they heard him doing what he did. Gotta respect those who came before. There are unbelievable guitar players in rock out there, but for me it really comes down to three guys. Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen. They changed the way everyone else played after them. The next transcendent player is out there, we just haven't heard them yet.
Lex, the look you had on your face at 5:08 is EXACTLY the look we all had seeing him live. RIP Eddie.
I was going to say the same thing lol I end up staring with my mouth wide open like a weirdo every time I watch this, which is a lot
It's the look we still have watching him on you tube how can you not smile watching greatness like that🎸
I would love to explain Eddie Van Halen to you. That guitar is a special one that he designed and had made. You are watching the by far greatest guitarist ever.
Eddie will always be an inspiration to all guitarists, not only for his techniques, but for his simplicity and charisma that he had. RIP EVH
He was always smiling
@@juliemanarin4127 Yes, even when he was seriously ill! 🥺
Both Eddie and David Gilmour from Pink Flyod.
Not gonna I heard “ buff fingers “ that’s awesome and funny asf.. love your channel
Amd his inventions from altering amp heads to creating the d-tune switch.
This is actually a collection of many solos and intros, not just "Eruption". I've watched this dozens of times since 1986. Thanks for the video!
Actually, 1993. But yes, I understand what you mean. 😁 (Oops! I’m thinking about the live album that came out in 1993. Of course this was from 1986!) 😬
@@davidbrucemusicvideo '93? Nahhh.
Yeah,it was 1986
@@davidbrucemusicvideo 86 dude.
Before '00 for sure
This solo is a combination of a lot of Eddie Van Halen solo pieces and riffs;
1:41 is a song called '316', which was named after his son's birthday, March 16 (from 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge').
2:46 is a variation of 'Eruption'. He uses the two-handed tapping technique (from Van Halen's first album).
8:24 is a variation of 'Cathedral'. He uses a technique called 'violining'. He hammers on the notes on the fretboard and creates volume swells with the guitar's volume knob. (from 'Diver Down').
11:06 is a variation of the opening riff of 'Mean Street'. He incorporates a form of bass 'slapping' (from 'Fair Warning').
13:11 is a variation of 'Spanish Fly'. More tapping (from 'Van Halen II')
15:20 is an improvised ending, showcasing his unique fast double-picking technique.
Eddie was an innovative guitarist who incorporated harmonics, feedback, 'whammy bar' action, heavy amp distortion, and phase shifter and delay effects into his playing along with his sheer speed, dexterity and sense of melody.
Awesome awesome comment!
Damn... How could you not love Eddie and that Million Dollar Smile!! No one ever made it look easier, and no one ever made it look so fun!! RIP... Truly a legend!!! Thank you guys for this one!!
Already made a hard day better!!

That was probably the biggest trademark of VanHalen in the DL Roth days. They always gave off that awesome "fun" vibe. "Jump" was nothing but fun. Especially the video.
I believe this is the first time we've seen Lex MESMERIZED. Try "I'm The One" from their first album. RIP Eddie the GOAT!
Oh yes, what a song
I'm the One may be my favorite of his. That whole first album was LEGENDARY
@@jasonthompson2355 IS legendary
This is a combination of all of his famous solos and riffs all in one long combination. Rest well Eddie. Thank you for all the great memories.
You two are really observant, Lex first said it's like he's playing the piano, then it's like he's playing the drums. EVH started on the piano as a child, went to the drums, didn't like it landed on the guitar. Love your reaction to one of the greats Mr. Edward Van Halen :P
You just witnessed guitar perfection from the greatest ever.
At one point he even makes it sound like a cello…such a great guitarist!
RIP Eddie
Where Lex said she thinks this part is Eruption, that part is actually called "Cathedral". This is different songs used just to showcase his talents. Much of this is all from his experimentations.
Yeah just posted that
Best guitarist on the planet!! Saw him play 6 times!! Teared up when he passed, thinking of all the great times watching him and the boys doing their thing!!!
Eddie was the man....well known for his tapping technique!!
Eddie said that he was not the guitar god, but it was Alex Lifeson of Rush that was the real guitar god.
RIP EVH one of the greatest guitar players to ever walk this planet. How lucky we were to be alive the same time as him.
True words!
Yep!!! Sure was!!!
one of the greatest live performers of all time.. all passion and skill
Just look at the comments.....
Edward Van Halen is a TRUE Rock legend, as big as it gets for any guitarist, Arguably, the most "famous" guitarist in History.
10 multi platinum studio Albums ,,2 Diamond status albums went over 10x platinum, many many top 20 songs, put a humbucker in a stratocaster and changed the electric guitar industry overnight, forever, his Amplifiers sound or "brown sound" has been chased, imitated , worshipped and analyzed by millions of Rock guitarists since 1978, his finger tapping caught the ears of every guitarist who plays rock guitar to this day, his striped guitar is recognized worldwide as VAN HALEN, filled hundreds of stadiums , year after year after year, with massive Rock shows, played the Solo on Michael Jacksons "Beat it", ...etc etc... hard to name another Artist , of any kind in that zone. ever.
And indeed, no reaction can explain what Edward Lodewijk van Halen did or meant to the world of rock guitar playing, that's why it's always needed to use 'etc, etc', because no one can cover it all.
You left out torturing George McFly into asking Marty's mom out.
@@bobbybobbatunday9959 lol !
he actually called Alex Lifeson of Rush the real guitar god.... said it in an interview in Guitar magazine back in the 90's
@@kevinkarbonik2928 Great point! He was also very humble!
This segment took place in the middle of the concert. It was a montage of all his greatest pieces of his guitar works. He didn't invent the "both hands on the neck" called tapping but he did perfect it and take it a level further like with everything else he did. RIP Eddie
One thing people forget or do not realize.... Eddie created and invented the sounds.... WITHOUT A FOOT PEDAL!! He created the sounds out of necessity because at the beginning of VanHalens career... Eddie didn't have the money to afford a foot pedal at the time so..... He created his own... There will never be another like Eddie he truly was one of a kind and the world going forward will never know a soul like his. Rest in peace Eddie.
When you said this is eruption was actually Cathedral. Eddie’s solo is usually in the middle of a show. Never the end.
To me, Eddie is the G.O.A.T.
This part of the show was about two thirds in. The other guys get a restroom break, but Eddie had to wear parachute pants.
You both mentioned piano, drums and guitar. Guitar is Ed’s third instrument, first was classical piano, then drums.
@Big Homie Steve The Metal HeadIt was just a joke. Al and Mike had their moment in the spotlight so I’m sure Ed got a break then.
Ed was an actual instrument
I'll take parachute pants over ass-hanging-out pants any day.
The things this man could do with a guitar... truly the Mozart of our time
I seriously wish I could find such enjoyment in life as Eddie does playing the guitar.
Just ridiculous. RIP, Eddie. God, we miss you.
You two need to check out Tina S. A French girl who did Moonlight Sonata flawlessly on Guitar. Has a lot of finger tapping, which was spectacular. A lot of professional musicians said they couldn’t duplicate what she did. She was 17 at the time of the video she did.
I agree!!
You are so fortunate if you had a chance to hear these Classics when they first dropped.
@@choice12ozborne it was the world we lived in, the greatest time to be alive, incredible on every level...late 70's and through the 80's was truly an amazing life...void of all the fear and hate we see so common today.
I know I've read on here where people said that someone asked him in an interview who he thought was the best guitarist and he said go ask Alex Lifeson. Alex is pretty damn good. But I think Eddy might have just being modest. Cause damn he was good
Nobody ever catches the part of him playing “cathedral” that he is using the volume knob in the right hand and bending the strings with the other. Starts at 8:21 in this video. Love seeing people watch this in Awe as I did as a kid and until this day.
I see he is.
Volume knob, hammering on with the left hand and using a delay effect for the echo for a cathedral sound.
Im not a very good guitar play, but i knew of that technic from many years ago, rolling the volume. So some us caught it, lol
Bulshit I know every trick he does I play the guitar I can do a lot of those tricks
takes great timing to master the volume switch trick you are right - what gets me is the whole octave drop in E WITH JUST THE WHAMMY BAR the action on that E must be huge to pull that off
Everything you heard in that solo was parts of all of his songs put together to mesmerize you.....
Pure legend in the guitar and rock world! We wil always miss him and may never see anyone like him again. Always happy and full of energy and above all an amazing guitarist! RIP BROTHER
When you take his career into consideration, his playing ability, his God like composing skills, his innovation with not only playing the guitar, but to the instrument itself. No one did it better. We were all very lucky to live in a time when we could follow his career and see him preform live. RIP
He actually denied he was the Guitar god. and said Alex Lifeson of Rush was the true guitar god.
@@kevinkarbonik2928 No one's perfect. I guess even Eddie can be wrong about some subjects on guitar... I love Rush and I'm a huge fan of Lifeson.
@@AtomicBullz He said it in an interview in Guitar magazine in the early 90's I played back then and used to buy it for the Tablature.
@@kevinkarbonik2928 - I've heard people make those claims over the years... that Eddie said (X guitarist) was the best. And they always reference some article they read in a magazine 30 years ago, (which of course can't be verified).
As someone who bought the first Van Halen album right after it hit the shelves in 1978, and has been following them ever since... all I can say is that lots of interviewers have asked Ed that question, and he always dodges it by saying they are all great.
- Interviewer: “Who do you consider the greatest?”
- Eddie: “I think everybody is great really. It’s self-expression, I don’t think that anybody is better than anybody else.”
In a couple early interviews, he said his early inspiration when he was learning to play was Eric Clapton. But there are stories that once Ed became famous, Clapton snubbed him and refused to meet him.
@@Mr.Ekshin yeah... I heard about the Clapton thing too. But I personally read the Alex Lifeson thing, I was a player, a huge fan of Eddie and a huge Rush fan too, so it resonated with me, but I know what you mean.
Eddie is basically the reason Van Halen could sell out arenas all over the world. Just a guy and his guitar! Simply amazing!
Eddie inspired me to buy my first guitar over 30 years ago. He's the reason I play guitar to this day. The greatest of all time. RIP Eddie.
Bein born in '65...Eddie is my generation's "Hendrix." RIP to both of ya my brothers.
Watching the amazement is priceless.
Answering some questions of yours: “Eruption” (the way he was playing it at that time) was really just a skeletal framework he filled in with “pieces” he had wrote. There IS a formal “Eruption” piece but EVH would often elaborate in a freelancing kind of way. Two: yes, he knew what he was going to play beforehand. Certain head gestures or mouth openings BEFORE the riff is a telltale sign. And, yes, his practicing is a thing of legend. He had “played those riffs a ‘few’ times.” Three: “piano” is a key word, Lex. EVH was trained in classical piano before his rock career… even to go as far as winning competitions. Funny, but he couldn’t read sheet music. Average THAT into your estimation of the man. One of possibly three of The.Most.Innovative guitarists of all time. Not “rock” guitar-GUITAR. So much more about the dude but you can read up on your own if/when you have time.
The piano is a percussion instrument, and that's how Eddie approached the guitar, less of a stringed instrument more percussion.
I saw them in concert once, and my sister-in-law and her boyfriend had backstage passes. Before the concert even started, she was back there and he was just sitting on the steps, playing. "Practice" doesn't do justice to his preparation.
Yeah, it's a random solo. Sounds nothing like on the album, though a very limited number of parts from that version appear here. That's why it's called, Eruption. It's an explosion of sound translated from his mind, through his mouth, to his fingers, and NO, this is NOT taught, he made up a lot of this, or pulled it from other guitarists and expanded on it. This is uniquely Eddie.
@@stevemd6488 Ed also started on drums as a kid. At some point he and Alex traded instruments when they were still young.
@@kitoyobeni1 drums and piano, both percussion. Made significant impression on Ed when he and Alex switched, IMHO.
Once in an interview, Eddie was asked what it`s like to be the greatest guitar player. He smiled and said, "i dont know, go ask Glen Campbell"!

I'm really enjoying your reactions to songs that I've grown up with. At 58 I'm always surprised when younger folks haven't heard some of these great songs and bands. I'd love to hang out with ya and listen to music and answer all the questions you bring up while listening. Ya'll take care and I look forward to more videos.
When she says ,"this is eruption " he is actually going into a piece called "Cathedral" . Eruption was played earlier.
I never thought I would ever tear up during an Eddie guitar solo but seeing him back in the day with Sammy really got me. When you grew up in the 70s and 80s it’s tough to lose Eddie Van Halen! It’s like losing part of your childhood.
You certainly got that right.
Still can't bring ourselves to say the words. EVH will always be here. And as long as G Lynch, Nuno and every other 80s metal guitar slinger is tearing it up on stage, Ed lives on.
You know how people say "I remember the minute I heard JFK was assassinated?" Or, 9/11, MLK, etc? Ed was a HUGE influence on me as a guitarist. Ne changed the way I played. I don`t tap at all because it just is not my thing, it was Ed`s. But pretty much everything else Ed was there pushing me to play and push my muscles in my forearms, wrist and fingers until they locked up from extreme exertion, from 4 to 6 hours a day, sometimes even more. As a young guitarist in the 80`s, us guitarists were goin babannas because of Ed Van Halen. His tone, his chops his energy , speed, clean picking and his best weapon, his swing. His rhythm playing. If I needed inspiration he was there. We all couldn`t wait for the next Van Halen record to come out. So it brings me to this; I was texting with my cousin waiting on line at the bank and he said Ed Van Halen died. I thought he was breaking my balls, joking. Then I thought of his cancer that we all thought was in remission, so I ran thru the radio channels while still on line for the ATM and BOOM, "Edward Van Halen has died at 65 of the throat cancer he has battled for years". I don`t even know how to explain my reaction. I just stared out the window until the car behind me honked at me to move up. I was numb for the rest of the day, basically in denial. He was there for almost my whole life and suddenly now gone. Jesus Christ, now I have Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh left. They are getting up there as we all are, us 80`s Gen. X dudes. It is just a matter of time now. So the world keeps spinning and the cycle of life goes on.
You are so right about that when we lost Eddie Van Halen we lost a part of ourselves for all the people that grew up with that music and got to see him perform live most amazing performances I've ever seen on guitar by far no one touches this guy as far as goat
It kills me how little y'all knew about this, but I'm always glad to see new faces discovering legendary rockers like you did in this video! Check out Van Halen's self titled album from 78, absolute masterpiece of an album!
Does get me too m8 - the fact he pulls off the whole octave drop in E( before one of the pauses :/ ) is astonishing as itts done with the whammy bar alone no digital effects unit or retune . The fact he messes with the tremelo springs & the damn thing stays in tune is also incredible . THATS BEFORE we get to the tapping section which is a lesson in fuck row row row your boat = play what you like what sounds good . Im incredulous to people who are unaware of the greatest man to hold this instrument since Jimi hendrix
You guys, I just discovered Sister Rosetta Tharpe (sorry if spelling is off...) She RIPS an SG & whether you watch a documentary or a song - it's great to see an old black lady who started in gospel but, & you can SEE the love & the fire she has for metal electric guitar... If you love Eddie, & Jimi, Tony & Blackmore, Dave Meneketti, Page, Berry, Holly... If you can, please give a listen to Sister Rosetta Tharpe - it's SO weird to watch "heavy metal" come out her amp - but everyone 🙇♀️😍, it's BEAUTIFUL to see her face & how much she loves music & her guitar! 🎸🎸🎸🎸 God bless Rock n Roll! And all you cutie pies out there!
Right? And they haven't even discovered the likes of Fripp or Kath.
I was lucky enough to see them perform this live at the Pasadena Civic Center before the 78 album released. They even played "Happy Trails" as we were all leaving...:)
@@DeltaElites I'm jealous, I saw David Lee Roth open for Kiss in 2020, and I remember thinking "This is sick, I got to see Van Halen at some point" and then not very long after Eddie died, so I'll never see them live but I guess that's ok.
The way Lex smiles watching the King EVH playing Eruption makes me happy that Eddie's music is still appreciated so much.
As great as Eddie was, my favorite thing about him was that he always had so much fun playing. You'll never see anyone smile ear to ear the whole time he played, the way Eddie did.
Eruption, the actual studio song is mixed up throughout this solo, which was probably in the middle of the show. If you check out Eruption/You Really Got Me, you'll hear what the song really sounds like.
Thank you for saying what I was thinking...........
let me tell you a rumor: that Eddie and Alex used to love to warm up using 'Wipe Out'...somewhere 'out there', there has to be a VH version of 'Wipe out', and boy, would I ever love to hear it.
@@nickmitsialis
Coincidently, "Eruption" was a warm up in the studio during the first album that the engineer just happened to record....luckily for us!
In addition, there are riffs and techniques from many of the albums in this...."Little Guitars", "Mean Street", etc.
Someone amazing gave me the answer to this a long time ago and I forget and am hoping someone will know, the slow part he plays in the beginning does anyone know what the name of that track was or what cd it was on?
Edit: holy crap my history actually still had it saved all this time later “316” is the track, love Eddie and even that short melody is mind blowing and so soothing to me
The reason why Eddie is loved more than the other brilliant guitarists out there is that he plays with soul and fun in a way that is unique. And of course he makes the guitar strut.
Eddie Van Halen was one of the very best
When you think of guitar, people say Hendrix, Clapton, Jimmy Paige....for me, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eddie Van Halen are the top two....Eddie revolutionised the guitar
DIITTO
My personal favorite is Dimebag, but I've never seen anyone make it look as easy as SRV did. The guitar was just a part of him.
You got it! Those two were put on this earth to play guitar and did it better than anyone else. They played guitar as naturally as they breathed.
@@mattiasnilsson896 SRV made his playing look so effortless its unfathomable how anybody was able to get that good.
I feel like Johnny Greenwood gets left out the conversation a lot.
The best thing about Eddie was that while he was definitely a "flashy" guitar player he didn't so so needlessly, all his playing was super tasteful. Some people talk about being able to play really technical and stuff but not having "feel" Eddie was the whole package and also very unique at the same time.
One of the best guitarists of a generation or two, RIP EVH.
Someone should have told Yngwie that a long time ago. 😉😏👍
And he always did it with a smile on his face!
The way EDDIE tosses the guitar pic into the audience without skipping a beat!!
ROCK IN PEACE EDDIE VAN HALEN...
To answer your question about whether the solo is structured or improvised: It's both. Eddie played a solo like this during most of their live shows and it usually consisted of bits and pieces from several different Van Halen albums, glued together with a fair amount of improv.
Exactly. Eruption was a solo (short explosive 2 minute piece of music) on their very first record. Eddie did several of these pieces of music over the course of the bands recording history, this solo is pretty much all of them sewn together by Eddies free flow of playing as he improves his way to and through each composition with a love for the instrument you rarely see. Eddie always has a smile on his face when he is playing. His guitar was literally part of him
@@raywideman7157 Eruption from Van Halen, Spanish Fly from Van Halen II, Cathedral from Diver Down, 316 from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge... maybe bits from others, and a lot of improv
Also,,Eddie Van Halen forever inspired me like millions of other guitarist and he is missed.
He was a true legend we dont always know how lucky we are
to have genius to experience until its gone too soon.
I love seeing you two experience this for the first time. I must have watched this guitar solo 200 times as a kid and pretty much know all the parts by heart. Eddie truly was the best.
This was Eddie "noodling around". Just little bits and snippets from intros and solos from everything he's ever recorded.....and then some.
Give a listen to "Eruption/You Really Got Me" from their debut album. You'll get an idea of what we all heard back in '78 ("Runnin' With The Devil" ain't no slouch either).
He changed the sound of rock guitar forever. One of my first guitar heroes.
That first album is still killer
@@LordEriolTolkien Hell yeah it is!
I have my worn-out copy sitting in a frame, along with other vinyl from the same era, and hanging in my "dude room". I even have a ticket stub from that first tour (w/ Sabbath) tucked into the corner of the frame.
Didn't see the show (I was 12) but it's one of my favorite pieces of "memorabilia" in the room. That would have been an incredible show though.
Early Eddie and Ozzy in the same show....? C'mon, man!
You getting a copy of the new EVH book?
Don't know that Edward actually "invented" tapping but he was the 1st to use it as part of his style and made it a popular technique. The section Lex thought was Eruption was actually called Cathedral off their Diver Down album. EVH also made popular that technique of using the volume knob to soften the attack and fade in the notes (watch right hand during that part) In this overall solo he played all of eruption but pieces at a time in each section. He also incorporated Cathedral, Mean Street intro, and Spanish Fly which were all of his "solos" that made him Edward Van Halen. Hope this helps understand the structure of the solo. It was definitely not improvised but a structured showcase of his greatest hits so to speak....
There were a few that did, check out Vittorio Camardess..."Chitarra Amore Mio" 1965
Like Nuno Bettencourt, who uses fragments of solos and instrumentals from his songs and joined them in the "live guitar solo".
By the way, Edward was the pioneer in the use of 'two hands tapping'. Because, although there were already jazz guitarists who used 'tapping', it was very rudimentary, with just one note, that you can't even call it tapping, Edward played on the entire neck, on all the strings and applying it to the scale progression. Now that was "two hands tapping"!
I also hear some bits inspired by J.S. Bach in there (Tocatta and Fugue). I think maybe that's why Lex says it almost sounds classical. He sets up Eruption with some Classical music, and Eruption itself kind of follows the same structure/rhythm as Tocatta giving it a Classical feel. Around the 1:10 mark:

It's like when you see someone on handsfree phone having a conversation at a stoplight, waving their hands around when no one else is in the car. The hands and vocal regions of the brain are interconnected at least in some people.
Actually the open mouth is a technique to replace/or enhance in-ear monitors by bringing the sound in. If you find some early Allman Brothers with Dwayne Allman live, no in-ear back then and not even front stage monitors and he's just pulling in the sound.
It’s the soul trying to come out. Check out Stevie Ray Vaughan or Hendrix, they all did it. It’s an amazing thing to watch.
Every time I video myself playing guitar I notice I'm making so many goofy faces but I don't even realize it while I'm playing. I feel like I'm just sitting there normally. I think our brains process the sound and cause us to create faces that would match them. Almost like a glitch of the brain 🧠
I learned hammer-ons, harmonics and pullons for fun after watching Eddie. So sad he is gone. but happy people are "are reacting" to his work. Sending Love, tjb
Finger tapping . He was a master of it. Truly amazing to watch. Glad you enjoyed it. Also like how she was smiling during the true part of Eruption. Seeing how fast he is playing.
At about nine minutes in you asked, "Did he just retune it?" No. He keeps the tremolo cover on the back of the guitar off so he can reach in and pluck those tremolo springs. Combined with delay and some volume swells and dissonance it sounds fantastic. And you're right about his face. That is "guitar face" and we get it because we are mouthing the notes and singing them in our heads as we play.
Coke jaw nice try, nah im kiddin my buddy does the mean jaw swing I know.
@@mmsm6370 ahhahahaha... uh, yeah, guitar face, that's my story and I'm sticking it. (sniffffffffffff) :) o)
@@KenDWebber I always say what the f are you staring at when he jams out, its like a glaze goes over his eyes and he stares like he's very confused or looking at something he cant figure out, and between the staring and the mouth its hilarious, I get it he's working things out, its too funny, these are all great memories I'm old now havent even talked to him in over 10 years. Even funnier that he has a huge nose.
RIP EDDIE! Only several people who have ever walked this earth can say there were ever in your stratosphere when it comes to the strings. God bless
Eddie in an interview said most of the sounds he makes are unique to him because a lot of the effects he wanted he couldn't afford the pedals for so he came up with a different way. Later when he could afford anything wanted he had that foundation.
Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany is the coolest drum solo I've ever seen. Hopefully you both will watch it one of these days. By the way, he's the drummer of Rush.
His older solos were much more interesting IMHO but yeah, he was something else. Buddy Rich also, ridiculous drum solos.
Neil was the GOAT RIP. I was lucky enough to see RUSH live 3 times. I’ve also now seen TOOL live 3 times and Danny Carey is now the GOAT of drummers. In many ways Danny embodies everything that Neil brought to drumming much like Eddie brought to guitar playing. Inventive and inspirational playing for the generations to come. There is a Danny Carey Drum Cam video that is next level and shows why Danny is called the human octopus.
yes more rush reactions please.. La Villa Strangiato. and even maybe some day when they feel up to it 2112 😁
Yup
Neil is my favorite drummer so far, aside from Manu Katché from Peter Gabriel, and Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews.
Perhaps the greatest Rock Electric Guitarist of all time. He was by far the most creative! Man, I really miss him.
The greatest guitar player ever! Long Live Edward Van Halen.
Love Edward, but there the 10 greatest guitar players of all time unfortunately most of them are dead they're interchangeable depending on what mood you're in
Nobody I mean nobody touches Eddie's catalogue. Absolutely brilliant!!
David gilmour and jimmy page when he was up for it >
De beste gitarist alle tijden, Eddie van Halen geboren in Amsterdam 26 januari 1955! We zullen je missen Eddie Rust In Vreden!!!
I saw this show in Philly and the solo was somewhere in the middle of the show. A masterclass that Eddie made look so easy. All we could do was watch and pick our jaws up off the floor. Trust me; the crowd was lit for the entire concert, but this is when you stand, watch listen, and try to comprehend.
"Guitar face" or whatever one wants to call it, is just a display of emotion just like one using their hands as they talk. Stevie Ray Vaughan had some of the best stank faces in the game.
Eddie reinvented the guitar. Back in the club days on the sunset strip he’d face away from the crowd during solos so people didn’t know what he was doing and stole his tricks because him and Randy Rhoads were guitar rivals on the strip. Eddie was the most innovative and influential guitarist since Hendrix, those 2 primarily created the rock guitarists we know and see today. When Van Halen one came out no one ever heard a guitar sound like that before.. it was truly amazing
he is in his own world when he plays no one can match him there will be no other player like him r.i.p evh
Eddie was next level. He perfected the "tapping" technique, like no other.
Kills me when people only play the intro, though.
You should check out their cover of Roy Orbisons "Pretty Woman".
It’s insane to know that he started out playing the drums, and his brother Alex started out playing guitar...so glad they decided to switch instruments when they were kids...Alex said that Eddie was better at playing guitar than he was, so they just kept the switch in place and the rest is history and a blessing to musicians everywhere!
They both started out training to be concert pianists. They didn't start using rock instruments until they were teenagers.
And Eddie never learned to read music. He in an interview stated he played by ear and improvised.
Brings tears every time. I have been fortunate enough to see every tour since 84
I get chills watching him play. Every single time
No one cares how it makes you feel.

Eddie Van Halen he will always be remembered as the Johann Sebastian Back of the electric guitar. Just like back then, he lifts us up to heaven with his musical majesty, and now he does it on the great heavenly stage.
RIP: 1955 - 2020 See you forever master😔🤘
the Paganini of guitar
He was the absolute best...seeing him preform live was truly bone chilling. RIP Edward, no one can ever compare to you. 🤩
This is basically a solo. There is only a few bits and pieces of the actual song Eruption.
You guys should check out the album version of Eruption along with the song it flows into You Really Got Me. 🤘
It's actually a collection of solos. Songs featured are: 316, Cathedral, Eruption and Spanish Fly.
@@TheDeadStretch Along with the intro to Mean Streets and a few other licks here and there....
The way they were meant to be heard.
Eddie is the whole reason i started playing. Hes my hero and always will be.
Glad y'all picked this one. I first heard EVH JUST Eruption when I was 12 years old. My older bro's were buying new music and I listened for free. So anyway, I was just starting to play guitar and this blew my mind that someone could do what he did. Fast forward 25 years and I had my own burgeoning musician sons. One night I poped in the "Live Without a Net" video and blew THEIR MINDS with this same solo, great memories!
It so much what he plays, but how much fun he has while playing. Same with Dimebag. Then again EVH was Dimebag's biggest hero. He was even buried with the guitar EVH used for Van Halen II. Taken too soon, but what an honor!
Vinnie said that when they were kids if someone would have told Dimebag that he would be buried with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar Dimebag would have said kill me now
Where is Dimebag buried? (Asking for a friend)
some "fun facts" you two, Eddie started on drums, to take out his aggressions stemming from a strict dad and old school European classical music teacher who cracked he and Alex's knuckles with a ruler when they messed up on the piano, but since Alex was older/bigger, he'd kick Eddie off the drum set, so that's when Eddie picked up the guitar. Eddie is also credited with inventing "Tapping" where you play the neck/frets with both hands. As a matter of fact, when he first did it on stage, he played with his back to the audience because so many rival guitar players were there just to figure out how he got that sound. Many of these are from previous albums like at 9:17. That's called "Cathedral". If you listen to the studio version of "Little Guitars", the intro showcases his classical guitar skills. Also if you listen to "Big Bad Bill", the clarinet is played by their father. All 3 from "Diver Down". Notice where his cig' is? Many of his axes have burn marks there. Google "Dimebag Daryl Eddie Van Halen" if you want to know about how big his heart could be (sometimes).I could go on n on.....
Lex nailed it when she mentioned "all the different sounds". The different sounds kept coming through every new album that the band ever recorded.
Baluchitherium :D
In the end, the cigarettes killed him, RIP Eddie Van Halen😢
I will always be your fan.
“How is he gonna do this for thirteen minutes?!” Yeah that’s crazy but what blows my mind is how Eddie has already annihilated his guitar for probably half a concert set and still has the endurance to do this. Absolutely fucking insane.
Practice and cocaine.
Check out Zappa and Vai much more technical! Played longer as well!!
@@timothytouhey8682who cares how much more texhnical vai was! He will never be evh! He will never have the riffs, the tunes, the sound, and most importantly the innovation! Eddie is king!
Stunning. Guitar playing. Masterpiece 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🙂
The beginning of this solo, Eddie is playing…maybe for the first time ever…what would be titled 316, in 1991 for the birth of his son Wolfgang.
These are the solos that he’s playing here…
316
Spanish Fly
Cathedral
Eruption
Sunday Afternoon in the Park
Little Guitars
Correct me if I’m wrong or missing any🤘🏼
All correct except remove Sunday Afternoon in the Park (that was a Michael Anthony bass solo), then remove Little Guitars and replace that with Mean Street.
@@MetalMcfly Sunday afternoon in the park is actually a synthesizer.
@@mikeralston777 Yes, it was originally written with a mini Moog Synth by Ed. The inspiration for the song was from the stress Ed was feeling for his upcoming wedding to Val in 81. The song was transcribed to be included in Michael Anthony's bass solo which was first introduced on the 91 For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour and has been played every tour since up until Mike's departure from the band. The original was never recreated live on synth since it's first recording.
This performance is just History. When stars align... The guy being a sweetheart in RL is just the cherry on the cake.
OK, not that we've broken Brad's instrumental cherry, we need Orion, Call of Ktulu Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), and La Villa Strangiato...
Abso-lutely!
Joe Satriani!!!
hope they do them.
Oh yeh . . . And and YYZ, anything by Steve Vai . . . I'd also humbly suggest Intermezzo Liberte and Chris Amotts 'Tyrants of the Rising sun' solo from Arch Enemies back catalogue
Glasgow Kiss aswell, perhaps?
Nope. The end all be all of guitar solos, David Gilmour's comfortably numb solo live at The Pulse!!!!
"I can't believe he's going to do THIS for 13 minutes straight." Nope. He's just screwing around at this point. He gets serious here in a minute.
I cried all day when that man died. Rest well Eddie. We miss you.
Van Halen was the first live show I ever saw. I was 17 years old 5th row on the floor. Saw this from 20 feet away. Blew my mind in 1992 or 1993. Balance tour.
The look on Lex's ace at 6:27 brought tears to my eyes. You have just witnessed the greatest guitarist in the world playing the most recognized guitar solo ever created/performed. We miss him SOOOOOOO much, RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN. Seeing her face react was the best thing I have seen in a VERY LONG TIME !!
I thought the same thing.
The reaction to that part of the solo by first time listeners is so awesome to watch. Watching someone have that kind of first time reaction to an artist who has perfected their craft is almost supernatural. Makes you realize that music is such a powerful force.
Yes. She got it. It moved her. Right there with that great, genuine smile! I’ll never get sick of these reactions to this performance & I always get chills and well up a bit during this. I’m so glad that they witnessed this.
Amen brother.
Greatest????? I would disagree with you on that.
The first part of the solo was Eruption, the second part was Cathedral, then his innovative style he combined to do something in the moment, some guitarists move there mouth because the piece of music moves them, his mouth moving doesn't make any sound that is all his instrument and his setup, R.I.P EVH ❤👌🤘
First part was 316
@@tidentrue oh was that the piece just before he broke into Eruption?
He also played a bit of the intro to Mean Street.
@@tidentrue you got it
The part where y’all thought was eruption was called Cathedral. He turns the volume up and down and plays the neck only.
