The smooth running of that loco looks so good. There's something about having a model of a engine that you remember from childhood adds a lot of sentimental value.
Yeah it was literally the end of the wrap that was just too long for the space behind the decoder. After that it all fits in perfectly. Thanks for watching 😃
I can certainly see how a fond memory of a loco like this would make anyone want to have a model of it in their collection. The unit from Rapido looks great and the modification you have made work so well - very well executed modification. Reminds me of the dock industrial loco that my Dad used to show me on static display at Dagenham dock when I was small when he would take me to work; I only wish I knew what type of loco that was . The Hunslet looks great on the layout too, sound amazing.
Yeah, when I was younger I always wanted someone to make a model of these locos. Now Rapido have stepped up and while they haven't done Primrose quite like I remember her, it was great fun to try a bit of "proper modelling" while putting this video together. Thanks for watching 🤩
I repaint models somewhat frequently, so I have a few tips. I always thin down my acrylic by dipping my brush in water before getting the paint itself. This aids in getting thinner layers, so that you can do more layers. That way, you can truly disguise the wasp stripes. Hope this helps!
Yeah when I said in the video I was using thin coats of paint that's basically what I did. I think it just needs a few extra coats to really cover it over for under the bright lighting. Thanks for watching 😃
Very nice upgrade, That Model Railway Guy. How I wish we had the 16" Hunslet for the sim. Sound is great, but I'm truly amazed at the loco's performance, with prototypical speeds, smooth starting and stopping. This one will be a favorite for some time, I'll bet.
great to see a video of the scary "modifying a £150 loco" stuff that a lot of people (understandably!) try to avoid. think i might have had a panic attack painting the buffer beams.
I was definitely out of my comfort zone with this one! I think starting simple and going slowly is the way to go initially, I mean it's not like I was trying to repaint the whole livery. Thanks for watching 😃
That model turned out really nice. The sound was great love the sound of coal being shoveled with the coal box flickering perfect. Thanks for sharing her with us and she looks great on that beautiful layout. GOD BLESS from America 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
Yeah it's always nice when the manufacturers sync up the firebox LED with the sound. It's often a random feature too that just plays occasionally of its own accord which is also fun. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks Matt! If you haven't seen it already there's a whole playlist on the channel documenting the entire build of the layout from start to finish with the final few episodes being uploaded over the next few months. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Great! Sounds like an interesting watch to see it in the process. I can sympathize with how much there is to it having building my own small layout over years.
Newly found your videos and enjoying tracking back through your layout build. I have a Hunslett as well but haven’t added sound yet, so now inspired to do that and add stay alive. To finally finish detailing your lovely model have you thought about adding real coal to the bunker and a crew? Can’t help thinking that would really bring it to life! Haven’t Modelu produced a train crew for the loco?
I actually have a Modelu crew for this model already... I just didn't have time to paint and fit them before this video was released but it's on my To Do list. Thanks for watching 😃
I got mine from Digitrains if that helps. They don't work on analogue though, otherwise when you turned the controller down the loco would keep going. Thanks for watching 😃
Pva , or expos equivalent of rocket card glue is also good for nameplates.. it's what I have used on mine. Oh....and didn't Primrose run with whitewalled tyres when you volunteered at Embsay? That's not too scary a job to do if you wanted to... Nicely done though sir
Yeah I considered PVA too - my only thing against that is getting the amount wrong and having it ooze out the sides 😅 She did indeed... I'll leave that one for another day though. Alternatively with Rapido now making a preserved version with the whitewall tyres I might see if they end up with any spare wheel set that I could swap in. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I use a cocktail stick with pva, a couple of pin pricks, you can in theory get rid of any excess as it goes tacky before it sets..... Not a bad idea re the wheels. Good to see an ex Embsay stalwart modelled again.....one day in the not too distant future, we should be able to see her steam again in reality....
Thanks! They're great little models although the stay alive is definitely needed for DCC sound. Glad to hear my influence is rubbing off! Thanks for watching 😃
I think this modification really does look quite effective. Obviously there's some improvements that could be made, like renumbering, and painting the white rims on the wheels, but really it does look the part. That tip for painting the name plates is really useful - I'll keep that in mind for if I ever need to paint etched nameplates. Something else for me to keep in mind is to actually finish the whole video before commenting, which is the reason I deleted my last comment - real facepalm moment for myself there.
Yeah the nameplates do look good when finished like that, so much easier that painting around the letters. Haha, no worries. But yeah it definitely helps to watch the whole thing, especially if it's something you're planning on trying yourself. Thanks for watching 😃
The problem is that I would need to own all the locos released this year to be able to determine what's a bargain, otherwise I would just be recommending stuff blind. Thanks for watching 👍
I'll be keeping this one. The batch 2 version of Primrose is more how she was in early preservation in the 70s/80s rather than how I remember her from the 90s. Most likely I'll end up with a preservation Beatrice though! Thanks for watching 😃
Would you ever consider detailing your MK1's? because they look good, but there are still small details like the connecting doors should be brown as they're wood, and the wheels looking more detailed? Just a thought.
Maybe, but in my opinion they're fine at the moment. Having spent plenty of time trackside with real MK1's when volunteering at heritage railways there's nothing major that stands out as an issue in my eyes. Thanks for watching 👍
This wasn't a sound fitted model, I added the sound decoder myself. The only difference between DCC Ready and Sound Fitted though models is the decoder being fitted by the factory. The PCB on the loco doesn't have solder pads for a stay alive so you'll need a decoder (sound or not) which either has the solder tabs or flying leads to connect a stay alive to. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Ah ok, I am just doing the same to my Beatrice, although I am leaving the wasp strip on, so I thought I would ask about the decals.
Mostly because I was worried about messing it up 😅 Similar to the running number, it was a general look I was going for rather than absolute accuracy. Thanks for watching 👍
As I said in the video I couldn't find any transfers to redo these. As long as the number is actually there my eye tends to gloss over the fact that it's not correct. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy That one is a bit big, with rapido's loksound 5 installed the remaining space for a stay alive is 18x12x4mm. The 870009 mesures 27x10x9mm (26x10x7mm with the insulation removed), the one you probably want is the 872007 measuring 17x12x5mm. Edit: you can see 872007 on the circuit board @ 5:37
Regarding transfers if you have images of the number I think that will be quite easy to do if you speak to do Precision Labels.. He does all my odd and strange requests.
Good to know, I might see if I can dig out a clearer, more square on photo of the cab side. I tried getting in touch with Railtec before about a couple of projects but they never get back to me... presumably because there in such high demand. Will definitely give Precision a look! Thanks for watching 😃
What pads did you solder the stay alive to? I tried adding a powerpak mini on my factory fitted sound Hunslet and there was nowhere near enough room so I'd love to try this but it only has 2 wires and the loksound instructions are only written for 3...
Hiya, you see at 05:03 where I put the note on screen about it actually being the top solder tabs. The black wire goes to the outermost pad, the blue to the innermost pad and the middle is left empty. I do believe I found this info from the Loksound 5 manual so might be worth having a quick look through that again if you have any doubts. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
Thanks! I've actually already got their crew, I just didn't have the time to paint it before releasing this video but they're next on the list to do now. Thanks for watching 😃
