    Nice video. It was my understanding that the S series was the entry level model and in England,mid 60's, was the only one available. If memory serves, there were only 5 shipped with Davies from the Kinks getting the first,Entwistle the second and Squire the third. Paul was given one at the Sullivan show with George and John, but it was right handed. He didn't get a lefty until Rubber Soul.

  • @derekeugene
    @derekeugene 9 років тому +1

    Awesome video, but your explanation of the vintage/modern push/pull is backwards. The Vintage mode doesn't put in a cap, and a cap can't add anything to an instrument's tone.
    The old 4001s had a cap to act as a high pass filter to cut low end so you could run the Ric-O-Sound through a guitar amp. Most folks bypassed or cut that cap out because it sounds better without it. The vintage mode is the sound with the cap, the modern bypasses it. It sounds brighter with the cap in the signal because its cutting low-end.

    Buy a new 4003 or a used 4001?

    • @PANICBLADE
      @PANICBLADE 6 років тому +2

      Bo Dan Petersen 4001s have frets with a higher brass content and wear more easily than the ones they started using on the 4003s, and the truss rod is adjusted unconventionally. Newer 4003s are definitely more road worthy and more serviceable with the updated trussrod system and stronger fretwire, the pickups are also beefier, they have adjustable polepieces now, and you have the option to cut the cap out of the circuit or put it back in with that push pull, so they're also more versatile. Finally, the older Ric basses have a taller bridge pickup mounting ring where the strings are, so sometimes, they can get in the way when you would want your action lower or they might choke your sustain if you pick too hard. Newer 4003s have the metal edges cut away so the strings can go lower and they are less in the way when you need to get your fingers under the strings. Mechanically and technically, there is no reason to bother getting a 4001 anymore, that's why they have been discontinued and remain that way. Even the reissues of the 4001 made recently have the new frets and truss rods with modern wound pickups, even the horseshoe/toaster combos they make. If you're a vintage collector, 4001s are cool to have if you can afford one.

    I'm new to Rickenbackers, so forgive me for asking silly questions.
    I've heard that the stock Ric bridge is terrible & that I need to buy a Hipshot replacement bridge immediately if I don't want every bridge problem imaginable. Is this true? Or is it only the original vintage Ric basses that have bad bridges?
    I've heard people complain that the neck pickup isn't any good & never to use it, only use the bridge pickup. Is this true? Cuz if it is, I can always replace the stock neck pickup with a Nordstrand one. They have a direct replacement neck pu. I know Nordstrands sound good.
    I'm really surprised that Ric basses have a pickup selector toggle switch, instead of two volume controls or a blend control, so you can blend the pickups together, like on a Jazz bass. Why did Rickenbacker not go that route? Is there any real particular reason, or could I just Uninstall the toggle switch & wire in a blend control? I don't want to do something to ruin the classic Ric sound if the toggle switch is there for some important reason.
    Thanks!

      Sound wise: stereo output on 4003. Optical: block inlays and binding on 4003
      Other: Same wood, pickups atc
      4003s is easier to play (personal opinion) and if you dont use stereo 4003s is the way to go.

    Doesn't it sound like a mid-60s model (like Paul McCartney, Roger Waters or Pete Quaife's)?

    • @robertmarron138
      @robertmarron138 8 років тому

      McCartney, water and quaife all used flat wounds which are very bassy and give a thump sound rather than the roundwounds you hear on this video which are much trebly. There was only flat wounds back in the mid 60's.

    • @francoe1555
      @francoe1555 8 років тому

      +Robert Marron Other videos show people playing previous editions of the 4003s and reissues or the old 60's 4001, sounding bassier than here. However, in musiciansfriend.com there is a comment saying it doesn't have the Rick-O Sound and players need the string you are referring.
      Do I sound ala Chris Squire, Geddy Lee and Lemmy with Standard strings ? Didn't Squire rewired his bass to sound like he did?. Andy Warren (Adam And The Ants, Monochrome Set) played a '60s example in the '70s but he sounded like the former. However, Barry Adamson (who added a mudbucker in the neck) played one with Magazine and sounded very early Pink Floyd.

    • @cammarc
      @cammarc 7 років тому +1

      Franco Lastarria
      Chris Squire rewired his Ric to make it have a stereo output which it originally didn't have. He said he did that to be able to play with some certain effects in one pickup but not the other.
      A 4003 nowadays does have a stereo output so you shouldn't have to modify it. A 4003S however doesn't have the stereo output.

    rickenbackers are great but fuck they require so much maintenance, unless you're using the specific strings rickenbacker suggests, you're gonna be adjusting that truss rod day after day, though with that said: I love mine and i will never sell it ever, its the most comfortable bass i have ever played.

    It really seems like the neck pickup, while it has a nice tone, is noticeably lower volume than the bridge pickup. It makes me think that it's there more to compliment the neck when both are on, rather than be used solo. Am I the only one that gets this feeling?

      Hey Doug, I've owned a Rickenbacker 4003 for about 4 years now and I even own a Rick 360 guitar that I love very much as well! Nevertheless, to answer your question: YES - the middle position is where I find myself sitting 95% of the time on this bass. Unless I'm specifically trying to replicate a Geddy Lee or similar tone, the middle is where it's at! You can dial it in to be punchy and bass-y all in one package. Lots of guitar players and bass friends compliment it's tone. I always tell them that "every jazz bass dreams about being able to sound like a Rickenbacker". Hope this helps.

      Maybe it just needs a little adjustment. It shouldn't be too hard. Just tightening the screws a little bit to make it come closer to the strings. That should do it.
