- Rickenbacker honors the ultimate weedian with the Al Cisneros Signature Rickenbacker 4003AC. This heavily modified 4003S is outfitted with the Om and Sleep bassist’s specs of choice, including a re-engineered bridge with adjustable saddles, double action truss rod, removable thumb rest and pickup bezels, and “Sleep” green inlays. Our former bass guru Marc Najjar sparks one up for us and smokes onstage at Thalia Hall.
Al Cisneros /sɪsˈnɛroʊs/ (born September 23, 1973) is an American musician. He is the lead singer and bassist for stoner rock/doom metal bands Sleep[1] and Om. He also was a member of Shrinebuilder and Asbestosdeath (the precursor to Sleep) and has put out six releases as a solo artist.

Interviewer: How fast does the neck play?
Cisneros: I... don't know.
Lmao. What interview was that?
An imaginary one, dude. Keep up. 😜
Cisneros can rip on the fretboard tho
How fast?
Yeah......probably.......huh??
Personally I'm in love with this thing. But even if you aren't you still have to appreciate the fact that a signature model alone got Rick to do so many much needed updates to their instrument. Congrats Al, you deserve it.
Revealed Joe this thing is huge for ricks, they could start implementing the improved bridge and truss rod into a new model or updated 4003
@@Minnevan That's what im sayin man! Bright future ahead for Rick.
It's a kool 😎 bass.
Didn't even mention that there will only be 420 of these made....
420 likes as of now yew
There's one that landed at Sam Ash in Margate, FL. I saw it this past weekend. At $4000, I don't see it flying off the shelf so quickly.
They're two a penny, you can still buy them in 2023.
That implies 420 people can afford a rickenbacker.
imagine if you got the 420th model in the line
Man I got to see OM on their last mini tour, and I don't know if words are enough to express how hypnotic and meditative it was to stand in front of his bass amp
NO, was this their last tour?! I had to skip going..
@@espenfarstad1697 i don't think so bud, they just don't seem to tour much in general. I think that tour was like five dates along the west coast of the US, but I know they're doing a festival date soon too! Super worth seeing if you get the chance!
@@wolfqueenjubilee Alright. The gig I missed was in Norway. Good to know they are still going ;)
One of the best experiences of my life hands down
I’m jealous
I hope a video is released with Al talking about this bass. I can only hope though, Al and talking on video isn't really thing.
MTNDEW Salamander when I saw Sleep the only words he spoke besides lyrics was a very quiet mid set “thank you Denver” so quiet you could barely hear it even over the PA lol
@@MrNarwhalFace I believe ya. He was very soft spoken when I saw Om back in Feburary. I always wondered what he is, like race wise. He reminds me of my buddy who's mostly Cherokee. Almost the same some spoken mannerism..
I read a transcribed to text interview where he seems friendly and animated but maybe he's only like that when he doesn't have cameras on him.
Reminds me Maynard James Keenan from Tool. I saw him this year at Rock im Park and all he said was a very soft "Rock im Park"
@@purpled4864 I haven't heard enough of Maynard speaking to compare the two but the sound pretty different to me at the first thought. Lol I'll take your word for it.
Slow down there, Van Halen
You must not know what Stoner Metal is
Quinn Minnehan ok for both of you I didn’t want to respond but I guess you are baked because this shit is fast as hell. Hence, I made a /joke/ about him being VanHalen, or a guitarist who could be known to play fast

God, the drive tones (not the fuzz) in the later part of the video. Love.
Tasty tasty V4B saturation.
Ahh 2 pickup covers to remove :). He dreamed it up himself, it must’ve been a nightmare! I like the plexiglass thumb rest, gotta get one.
🤣
I might be able to put up with the pickup covers for a while but you got me on that plexyglass thumb rest!
they do actually come with bezels to replace them with that give you a thumb rest, sooo
also, Al plays with them on
Nice touch.
I’ve been waiting so much for this
the RIGHT WAY to demo a Al Cisneros bass.
the Ric + v-4b combo is a perfect match! I've got both a V-4b reissue and a fireglo 4003 outfitted with a black pickguard and truss rod cover. I definitely want to snag a set of those knobs!
I have the same rig! sounds killer
looks like i should invest in a V4-B and a 15” cab
A mention of the 4002! A guitar sales guy thought I was nuts for saying there ever was such a beast.
Tom Wimsatt it’s amazing what you can learn with a quick google search these days. Feel free to pass it along so he can eat crow!
Awesome Marc, only you could do a review of this beauty. I''m proud for Al, Sleep and all of his projects have come a long way and it's amazing to see after all these years that he's finally the recognition he deserves. You wouldn't have though that in the revival days that Al would have his own signature bass, but I guess it makes sense because I have a hunch that 70% of the stoner bassists these days bought one because of how Al rocked his.
Danny’s Smoking Den EXACTLY - i am willing to bet the farm that there are 1000s of bassists out there who own a Rickenbacker (or have lusted after one for ages) because of Al.
@@strangernajjar I've always had an eye for a Rick bass because of Lemme. No dis to Al, but Lemme made that guitar iconic and I bet that's why Al gravitated to it to begin with.
Ty Smith i bet Geddy Lee played a major influence 😉

Beautiful bass! 😍
I bought a fender jazz with my bush stimulus, and I'm buying this when I get my DOOM stimulus.
Man, aside from not having an 1 1/2" nut and bolt-on neck, this bass is EXACTLY how I'd personally have Rickenbacker build a bass specifically for me if I could. I mean, down to the pickup locations. Al fixed every Ric problem in this one, haha! Now I might finally have to buy a Rickie...
Edit: I guess it still has their weird-ass binding and microscopic frets. Maybe not so much after all, haha!
Absolutely beautiful
That bass guitar is amazing!😍

Please, put on sale those re-engineered bridges as spare parts!!!
They are now available on the rickenbacker Boutique site. I've read that the new bridge will now come as stock on all 4003 basses from the factory. They also have a cool, two-way bezel that's works as a small thumb rest and covers the open pickup cavity for those who've removed the chrome cover from their 4003 bridge pickup.
Marc could probably stand in as an Al stunt double
Killer demo mate but holy fuck that price tag is crazy redicules
The bridge pickup up on a Rick is actually in pretty much the same place along the strings as a precision (or ‘split pick up’ bass as you called it). The mute assembly on the bridge just makes it seem closer to the saddles than it is.
It’s possible to get some very precision like tones out of the bridge pick up on a Rick with the tone rolled down and a medium action rather than the factory ‘clank clank clank’ low action.
Ric Pickup is about an inch further down than the low side of a P bass pickup. Everything sounds the same with tone rolled off and a high action, that's not what Rics are for.
Master Al Cisneros man can play ! Want it
Y'know, that headstock silhouette on the grill cloth of the 8x10 cabinet at 0:48 in the video gives me an idea. I want that shape painted in black on the grill cloth of my own 8x10. I'll do four headstock shapes in a cross formation. Top would be the Rick headstock, right would be the Fender P/J headstock, left would be the Gibson Thunderbird headstock, and last but not least, the bottom would be a Music Man StingRay headstock. I'll add each headstock shape as I acquire each respective bass.
that tone makes me go OMMMMMMMM
Awesome bass. I want to hear the clean tone, too.
very nice
Seeing you handle it so easily... my '84 4003 weights like a truck.
Is it really that heavy? It looks so lightweight
sir edzonko the modern ones are considerably lighter. But the 4001s and first 4003s, in general, are pretty heavy. Mine is absurdly heavy.
@@fernandomilan8754 my small build can't even handle P bass for an hour before having a back ache LOL, it's a pity because Ricks looks so cool
My 2016 4003 Walnut weighs 8.5 lbs, a bit lighter than my previous 4003.
My 77 rick weighs less than both my fenders. Probably 8 pounds

Sleep - Dopesmoker :)
The true tone can only be heard on person
How does one thump on this tho?
why would you wanna be slapping on a Cisneros bass?...jk jk if you wanted too you could and it be especially nice considering the moved back neck pickup providing more room for your hand, but if you want a rick for slap you should get a different rick probably, but hey, whatever floats ur boat
Maaaaaaaarc !!
I know this is a signature model and whatever the artist wanted is what goes into the instrument, but.... a series / parallel switch for the middle position of both pickups would have been dandy.
@4:19
@@C0nnie Sounds like a standard parallel connection between the two pickups. A series switch (pull of knob perhaps) would have joined those pickups in series and blasted the hell out of the theatre!

Did you downtuned it to C standard without changing strings and/or set up?
either they come from the factory in C Standard ( like Al uses ), or they downtuned. The stock strings get pretty floppy in that tuning but it’s fun.
@@cactus-mcjacktus They come from the factory in standard tuning, but they tune to C beautifully. I own one and tuned mine down to C, and every time I check the tuning, it's always perfect.
@@pubbles2944 interesting, does it come with flats or rounds? I’m pretty sure Cisneros uses flats, and my 4003s came with rounds (and didn’t totally enjoy being tuned to drop C).
@@cactus-mcjacktus They come with rounds. I could be speaking out of my ass but I think for Sleep he uses rounds and for OM, flats
what amplifiers Al Cisneros use?
He used to use Matamp Green/Electric amps with custom Matamp fridge cabs but he's moved to mostly Ampeg SVT with the matching 810 fridges
Waaaaaaaant.
Cool video
The only Rick that actual has a magical tone.
can be purchased new from dealers for 2399, just look its not just for sale for 4k
I don't think these sold they way Rickenbacker and their dealers normally would expect a signature model to sell, which usually are bought up quickly or even pre-sale by an anxious public and/or collector's. As of right now it's no challenge to find them available.
Montag Alexis good cause I am halfway there on my savings for buying mine.
PQP!!!
I was praying the rosary with Al's mother and sister last night.
Damn, Al lookin dummy THICC
Considering how unplayable it is anywhere but right above the base of the neck, I feel like Lou Barlow needs one.
I got one 6ish months ago, I was worried about playability even though I mostly play on the neck, but in fact there is plenty of room between the pickups for playing with fingers. If you play with a pick, then it's not the best thing in the world. Buttt you can just remove the pickup covers. It's the nicest bass I've ever owned and is extremely playable.
you have Om tattooed on your arm ;) coincidence?
What pedal Al : yes
Needs more amps needs more gain

Beautiful bass. But that amp is the sound. How much is the bass??...
I just don't get it. Not hatin.
Tone control noisy!🙄
I can make all those tones on a Mexican Fender with a tube amp and some overdrive.
I haven't played many so I can't really make the call.
🤗🐒
It's not that the tone controls are noisy. It's that both pickups are single coil but neither of them are wound to reverse polarity, which would provide hum-cancelling when both pups are engaged and turned up full (the way Fender Jazz basses come wired).
Also, not mentioned in this video, but the two pickups in this model are stated by Rickenbacker to be wound hotter than their standard version Hi-Gain pups.
!!!DOES IT COME IN LEFT HANDED!!!!!!
anthony lakich they never do any signature models in lefty !
@@Thomas.harding Well they did they just didn't call it the McCartney 4001 in the Mid 2000's and if i would have got my EMI/Capitol deal in 2003 i would have had my 4004 L left handed Rickenbacker would be the 1st Offishal left handed Sig Rickenbacker... SOOOOOOOOOOOO! your not really right and your not really wrong..i just haven't got Rickenbacker to fully sign me as a Rickenbacker artist all thought i've been playing a Rick scents 1998 (4003/4001 and 4004)
So does it have thicker stock strings?? or the crappy useless Ric strings?
If you're gonna play dopesmoker, you gotta play it right
Amazingly they managed to make a 4003 even worse and charge twice as much. They covered up so much of the bass they had to screw on a hunk of plastic to act as a thumb rest. True craftsmanship.
Lol ignorance at its finest 👌
Buy a Fender.
Wish I coulda heard more than 3 seconds of clear tone, I mean wtf it's a Rickenbacker for fucks sake!
So if I can make bunch of noise on a bass ill get a Signature Model?
Still crazy that they want to charge $3400 for this bass, i made a comment on it on the Rickenbacker official page on facebook and they blocked me. I feel the bass should be 2400-2700 at best, they're really setting the model up for failure at that price, i still think it looks really bad ass though.
They don't give a shit dude. Priced to exclude. They don't want to make a lot of them. Everything RIC does seems to indicate that there is new blood over there pushing for cool shit and being held back/forced to compromise by a crusty old man.
That's a player bass for Al, and a collectible for the rest of the world. That's all. I'd love to have one, because it's simply gorgeous, but as a Rickenbacker owner, I can tell you, it doesn't have much difference soundwise like a simple 4003. Yes, the new bridge is cool, I'd love that on mine, but anyway. I'd never use that as a player bass. Not worth it.
Despite what many think, Rickenbacker prices are relatively fair. Compare the prices of a US made Fender and a Ric? About the same, and Rics are more difficult to build (neck-through, bindings, varnished fingerboard on most models). This model is a limited run without some unique features, so it's going to be a bit pricier to make.
I understand your frustration if you can't afford one, but the people making the guitar need to get paid too :D
Rick's signature/limited run models are always going to be priced higher, and often retain good resale value over time. Supply and demand 101. The new bridge and truss rod designs are a major move by them.
I give Rickenbacker credit, all their instrument production remains within the USA 🇺🇸. No bargain overseas branding to an already overflooded market. This also retains their value and desirability over time.
Love it or hate it, nothing else sounds quite like a Rickenbacker. They created a signature niche, long ago, and have stuck with it.
only 2399 new, look you can find them at dealers for that, i just bought one
Kinda smokey, you know?
fuck sake play the riff right
RIC has lost its mind
$3500 for a $1600 4003SW with a few mods(gimmicks) lol hard pass
It's $3999. I saw one this past weekend and got sticker shock. I own a Ric already (not a bass) and that is a tough price to swallow.
Way overpriced and no stereo outs? Lame-O.
The green inlays look tacky and badly out of place with the instrument's overall color scheme. They look like the color as auntie's Easter Sunday dress. But, the bass is available for those who want it. So be it.
I can only laugh at this pricing. For 3400 Bucks I can get the best frigging luthier out there, and have an own signature bass, and have spare money left for holidays. A Serek Bass smokes this lame ass bass, no competition.
Good for you, dude!
Semi-pro tip: don’t throw your shoulder out patting yourself on the back.
Ha-Ha!!! You're right about that bro!!! Sometimes I think the people at RIC are, how do I say, out of touch with reality!!! You could go out at buy three high quality basses with $3400.00 Bucks....
@@gittfiddler613 and who are you? Ah, the older brother of Marc. Do you always run around and help him out, or what? First of all I have nothing against Marc at all, and 2nd,where the hell am I patting my own shoulder? Is there something wrong with you? The only thing I wrote is, that the pricing of this bass is way way out of the actual worth, and that any luthier could do more with said money. Yes, I do play a Serek, so I know what I'm talking bout, had over 40 Basses in my life and rarely sold one, but sold a 4003,so there's that. So please keep your semi-pro tips for yourself, I played more arenas than you ever will.
Agreed, i paid around $3200-3500 for three used ricks (a 350, 4004 and 4003). Rickenbacker thinks it’s okay to charge what other companies charge for a custom shop work of art.
Honestly still surprised they okayed the price, even on their facebook they deleted 1/3 of the comments for commenting on the price.
@Rafi Kirder kids, don’t make me pull this car over!
In seriousness, I know what I’m getting into when making videos like these. People make comments about things because that’s the nature of this beast we call “the internet.”
You both are commenting with good intentions (Rafi with a quest to educate the public on alternatives, Phil with the utmost loyalty to his baby brother). Thank you both, sincerely.
It would have been nice to hear this bass clean. I like the bass but not everyone interested in buying it is going to play stoner rock music. So for that reason I rate this video zero and it sucks.
Blackie James GTFO 🤦🏻♂️
Conrad Nickelson I don’t understand how people don’t realize this. This dude even indicated he knows who Al is and what he’s about (by talking about Stoner rock). If they hadn’t played it dirty, every other rational individual would be whining about how they didn’t do it justice since that’s kinda what it’s designed for.
The people considering this bass for purchase (like me) have no intentions of ever playing it “clean”. That’s what my P-Bass is for.
This will only be played with the filthiest of fuzzes, smoking every tube on sight. It’s a purpose-built sig model.
Why ruin the tone with distortion, go buy a guitar ffs.
fuzz the bass or gtfo
