Rick O Sound - Motörhead Rickenbacker Bass Sound

- The Rickenbacker "Rick-O-Sound"stereo output takes you to pretty close to Lemmys sound. In this clip I have connected the neck pickup of a 2013 Rickenbacker 4003 to a Universal Audio 2-610 to get the bottom, and the bridge pickup to a Marshall '80 2104 amp into a '72 Marshall 1979A 4x15 Cabinet to get the grit.
Cheers!
Johan
Here's what Lemmy has said about getting his sound:
"I don’t use any effects. On my amp, I turn the bass off, the treble off, the middle is full on, and I’m at about three o’clock with the presence and two o’clock on the volume-on both stacks. I have two ’70s Marshall stacks. They go through 15" and 4x12 speaker cabs."
+Morphine Motorhead Thanks! Great feedback, do you have any reference for that I can post?
Johan Segeborn That came from bass player's site where they interviewed lemmy, he also modified his first Ric's pickups too
+Johan Segeborn I've read about Lem using thunderbird pickups in many places too, for example in this interview www.bassplayer.com/artists/1171/lemmy--double-down/26438. I think that humbuckers is vital to Lemmy's bass sound. By the way, seymour duncan custom shop makes Lemmy signature pickups customshop.seymourduncan.com/lemmy-kilmister-signature/. It would be nice if you record comparison video with Rickenbacker bass with stock pickups versus humbuckers
I've yet to hear those signature Seymour duncans used, but they can pack a lot of punch with it, which is good
Your comment is on nearly every lemmy video
Well, I have a small claim to fame here!!!In 1979 I think, my band, Bandanna, played a support gig fit the quite newly formed Motörhead
I was at the marquee in London , the gig is on their archive page.
Lemmy had destroyed his amp the previous night and asked to borrow my Marshall 100 super lead .
He was a very nice chap so I agreed, it sounded great of course, their roadies tried to take it away!
Great times (I sold the amp or swapped it for a master vol combo I think, can't remember, it's too long ago,!
Goodnight from Munich
Shouldn't have sold it man, would've been a great collectible having he played through it
@@gedztrez8814 i know that now 😢😤
@@gedztrez8814 dude you story its very good to be true xD
This just sounds fucking *amazing.* I love what you're jamming on, it's simple, but it just hits the spot. Nice job.
It's a beautiful sound you've achieved! Your accent is also awesome!
I learned this trick back in 69, i saw that Chris Squire was using a stereo output, one all treble amp one all bass amp
Really get an awesome full sound, you got the crisp punch but low end also. Good info you are passing on, i dont think many know about using it with two seperate outputs
+Clifford S Thanks, glad to hear it.
The best Rickenbacker demo I've heard. And I've been listining to quite a lot recently.
Johan, many years ago (1977-9), I used a Rickenbacker running stereo via a Rick-O-Sound through a late 70's Marshall 100wt Super Bass amp and a 4x12 Marshall cabinet. Rotosounds with a pick, pure Chris Squire bliss. Each pickup ran to it's own channel, God what a tone that was...
+Paul Simmons Cool, I can imagine! :-)
I love this video - I put it on every time I want to think about the Ric in my future.
+Jon Gray Thanks Jon! Glad to hear that. Hope it's yours soon! Cheers Johan
Great demo, great tone and great riff! I love my '79 4001. I have been using the Ric-O-Sound in various incarnations since I bought my Ric many many years ago. I have owned lots of other basses, but always go back to my Ric as my one and only true love. The combination of bite and boom is like no other bass ever made! And the thin neck thru design is so damn hot!
Thanks for making a great demo!
Sounds absolutely wonderful. Greatest bass ever made imo.
That was a great sound! Not quite Lemmy but I think a lot of the sound is in the fingers and in his case the plektrum attack. You make some of the best videos on the tube, thank you!
NPGANDERSSON Thanks, glad you like em! Cheers Johan
Thanks Johan.....I'm a Fender Jazz player and often wondered about getting a 4003. The garden fund is now going on a Ricko and your vid has convinced me that the moaning will be worth it ;)
Mike Litisore Thanks Mike, and good luck ;)
Man Johan this video is awesome! That was such an uplifting and catchy jam. Nice work. Let's go!
+jordan graf Thanks Jordan, it's so good to hear that!
Sorry for one more comment you have to read, but you are the best! Thanks!!! Really great informative and interesting videos! I especially like the split screen shots.
+craig steels Thanks Craig! So glad to hear it. Cheers
Wow, This is it !!!
Jut buyed a Rickenbacker 4003W myself, jour clips are the best.
Every time i hear you on bass i want to have the same, Thanks :)
Thanks Henry, Makes me glad to hear it! Cheers Johan
Hi Johan, you still have the pickup cover on your Rick, i looks better than without.
I am not shure if i will remove it, plays easier but it looks bad and i don't know if it has a function.
Rickenbacker says that it helped to reduce hum.
Whats your opinion ?
+Henry Franssen It's indeed in the way. There is a plate (treble bezel) that you can buy that covers up the cavity around the pickup after having removed the cover. I don't think that there is any noticeable difference in tone.

Cheers Johan
I could listen to this simple li'l bass/guitarline for ages.... genius!
God, that sounds fu**ing amazing. I so love the Rickenbacker tone!!
RIP Lemmy
I have loved Lemmy and Philthy since 1982. Now they're probably kicking ass in a better place. Cheers to them
Just now finding this channel and loving every bit of it
+Swaggety Ann Thanks, so glad to hear that. Welcome to the channel!
you put a big smile on my face when you said you gonna plug it into a 4x15'' cab!
Glad to hear! It's a beast!
Lemmy was killed by death (R.I.P.), but Johan's sound will never die.
I raise my glass.
+Gary Lee Cheers my friend, I have been a Motörhead fan since 1985
haha! nice. It looks like you are having a great time. Nice sound. Nice simple playing. Entertaining. Thanks for that.
+berthosquire Thanks! Had fun indeed:-)
I just wanna say I love whatever the hell you're playing
Rickenbacker.... one of my favorite bass guitars on earth...
+DeadKoby Mine too :-)
Really good job man, very interesting tone; I love watching your videos because you're such a unique player. keep up the good work.
Aj Ross Thanks, that's a very nice compliment. Cheers! Johan
I need more of this sound. It is so amazing when played like this.
I'm right in the middle of a build and you've made up my mind for me. I'm going split signal.
Just the best in terms of clarity and tones
Why did it take so long before I discovered this cool channel? \m/
+ThunderBassist Jay Welcome to the channel, my friend! Cheers Johan
I have a different approach of splitting the signal from a Rick; Since mine is a 4003 SW I only have mono. I made a signal splitter and send the mono signal to 2 different preamps. The results obtained this way are amazing! I can for instance without any problems get the Chris Squire sound. (I'm not so into Motorhead)
Don't listen to them man, you got the tone spot on. Lemmys tone is only dirty because it's louder.
Thanks :-)
+Johan Segeborn Why haven't you made a full version of this man, it's intense! Love that classic rock sound, from a time when bands actually had tone as opposed to just gain.
just need to turn it up insanley loud to get as much distortion as possible then you'll have it.
+Jart Yeah, Lemmy didn't hold back. That's for sure.
He played loud for sure. But his amps never really distorted that much. Its basically a mild overdrive. The key is his insane right hand attack on the string, very much like a rockabilly would play an acoustic guitar. And also his higain single coil pickups
The motörhead stems from Cameron Webbs online course shows lemmys tone... and it's distorted..
If its distorted or overdriven is a metter of definition. My point is; the "distorstion" he gets can not be achived simply by turning up the gain nob. Its all in the way he plays it ☺
Lemmy cranks mids, prescence, and volume on a Marshall 100 watt Marshall Super Bass. He turns off bass and treble because he was nearly deaf bass just rumbled in his head. He used rickenbacker's with thunderbird pickups using the bridge pickup mostly except for on the first few albums. He used 2 bass stacks, each with a Marshall 4x12 bass cab stacked on top of 4x15 bass cab. That's everything I know about his gear.
That was amazing! Been planning to really master stereo when I finally get a Rick. Thanks for the upload Johan, rock on!
Jose Alcantar Thanks man!
beautiful bass sound
Ah, Ric-O-Sound. I've run mine that way before. Ampeg SVT and Sunn 2x15 with EVM-15B on the neck pickup and a Sunn Beta Lead through a JCM 4x12 for the bridge. Yeah, baby!! Guitar players run when they see that setup!! I love using full-on guitar effects on the neck pickup, even a wah, and keeping that solid bottom.
Yeah, the guitar player is obsolete :-)
Thats cool dude! Gotta say bassist Chris Squire of 'Yes' brought what I consider to be the best Ricko tone ever captured on a recording in the song "Roundabout". Johan, do you have a favorite song with Rick-tone?
4x15 cab!!?? Damn man!
+Félix Deschambault Cheers man!
Everyone's favorite neighbor xD
Ha ha, Johan...back in the day, I had a black '69 4001, but I never used it in stereo, not once! Well, that sounded wild. It looks like I missed an opportunity there. Thanks for the demo!
mike Walker Thanks Mike, How do you think the sound of the 69 4001 compares to the current 4003s?
I like the sound of the new 4003's better. I found they were more versatile with the push/pull button. I wish I had that when I was working with my Rick. My 4001 was just a dream to play (I was playing a Jazz before) much nicer than the modern 4003's.
Very interesting sound. It strikes me as something one would find halfway down in the B side of a Edgar Winters album in the early eighties. Once you found it you could not stop playing it.
Thanks, that’s a very nice compliment!
i own 28 left handed Rickenbacker Basses i started my 1st Band in 1996 got my 1st Rickenbacker a 4003 Mapleglow. i use a 1978 JetGlow 4string 4003 at this time for my Bands next 5 Albums aka 88 songs and i tour with a Maple G&L 2000L from 1999.
Great tune! really digging those intro and outro parts.
Thanks Thanos! Glad to hear that. Cheers Johan
Dude, that's sounds friggin great!!!!!!!!!!! And loving what you're jamming to!!!!!
Great experiment, well thought out and executed.
Filton Kingswood Thanks, glad you liked it! Cheers Johan
GR8 VIDEO...GR8 PERFORMANCE...R I P MR. LEMMY KILIMISTER...
Thanks naz!
its the tone of 70's Motörhead.
Awesome good tone!
À bit more distortion, then tis lemmy
Excellent sound
+Jon Gill Thanks Jon!
FANTASTIC!
+Lavatch Thanks! :-)
The sound of thunder rumbling through heaven , God damn i want that bass :(
Thanks man, me too, I made the insane decision to sell it :(
Johan Segeborn :(
Johan Segeborn Ah man :(
I loved the sound of that bass in these videos, are you gonna ever get one again, and is there a reason you sold it?
1:46 sounds so f'ing awesome
Agreed. That's the reason a Rick is my dream bass.
Rock´N Roll!!! Sounds great!!!
Thanks Uwe! :-)
Almost 6 years late to the party, but that sounded awesome!!!
Still good after 7 years...hope you survived all the bs....
Rickenbacker stereo = super thick magick
how awesome is that!!!
Thanks Bence!
I think you sound awesome! Very cool.
+bikenutt1000 Thanks, I'm really glad to hear that!
Great stuff Johan , I have recently subbed to your channel and found this video in my UA-cam recs this morning:)''
Love the sound!! Definitely getting towards that Lemmy sound, especially when playing chords. I couldn't find any info about the Marshall head you're using. Is that a guitar head or a bass head? Do Marshall make good valve bass heads these days? Do you know what Marshall head that Lemmy uses? And what about Bruce Foxton - another great bass player!
Thanks! The amp is a1977 Marshall JMP 2204 Guitar head. Lemmy uses Marshall JMP Super Bass Model 1992. I know Bruce Foxton has been a Marshall Player but don't know the model. Cheers Johan
Great stuff Johan! love it : )
cool stuff, even I could play that and sound awesome
Thanks Philip!
+Johan Segeborn Watching it again trying to apply concept to my Bass. JUST SOUNDS AWESOME
I think you pretty much nailed it! ;)
Thanks Greg! Glad you liked it
Johan Segeborn You're very welcome! ;)
Sounds great man!
+MORGONRAST Thanks! Glad to hear it!
Grym du är Johan! Keep rocking 🤘.
Lemmy mentioned in an interview he uses the bridge pickup exclusively, and on his 4004lk, that seems true as the pickup selector is always down. However, older pics of Lemmy playing live with his older Ricks that had the Thunderbird neck pickups have his selector switched up to the neck pickup. It would make sense that he'd use the pickup he added to his Ricks to give him the drive and heaviness he sought. Chances are he left the bridge pickup alone in his older ones since the cover and mounting are still on them, and something like a Thunderbird pickup wouldn't fit really. That being said, if you look at some pics from really early on and the Hawkwind days, he still has the Thunderbird pickup in the neck, but the selector switch is in the middle, and he's using the rick-o-sound output. So Johan has the right idea, especially since Lemmy said before that the new pickups Rickenbacker has been using in the basses are fine. Yeah he used the humbuckers from them and had the custom Duncans, but he also had backup guitars with the typical 4003 higains too. Video sounds right, it is right.
The Rickenbacker "Rick-O-Sound"stereo output. I LIKE THE SOUND, CRSP, DEEP,NOT HARSH.
MarkMurcielago Thanks, glad to hear. Easy to balance harshness when there are two sound sources to play with. Cheerrs Johan
Nice piece music, cool riffs :-D
Thanks Martin! Glad you like them :-)
+Johan Segeborn What is the key of the song? I wanna jam with it :-D
+Martin Verburg I think it's A minor if I'm not mistaken. Cheers Johan
Excellent.....
Thanks :-)
Awesome-sauce demo. Though I thought it was that Lemmy just used the bridge pickup exclusively, while his Plexi used full mids and no bass or treble (coincidentally providing a flat frequency response into the rest of the amp). This sound reminds me of a Chris Squire-esque tone more, but still awesome, both thick and crunchy at the same time. :)
Thanks, yeah you're probably right!'
+Kyle Tekaucic no bass, i turn off treb but didnt know thats what he did
It makes sense, though. With the bass and treble zeroed, the mids control acts like a preamp gain setting with slightly rolled off lows and 6dB loss with mids at 10. This makes creates a crunchy tone without taking it to full power.
Awesome song!
Thanks! :-)
Sounded great!
+T6C Thanks, glad to hear it!
Great video must have missed it in 2014. I Dig the 4000 series Ricks. But one time I had to Re-Wire the stereo Rick o Sound from memory no schematic in about an hour. I did it but I should have charge more .
+LRoy Shreding Thanks! :-)
WOW... just wow.
In fact with my rickenbacker i also use a guitar distortion box that i mix with the clean signal to get back some of the low end and some of the clean attack, but the rick o sound sounds really different, it sounds really like two different instruments played together. i might re think my rig and go that way.
Thanks! SweBass? A fellow Swede? Cheers Johan
a french ;) but born in Molnlycke! heja sverige!
Cool, thats right in my neighbourhood, I live in Gothenburg!
Bloody good jam there mate, rippa 👍
Hey man That was Great!!! Bad ass
amazing!!!! never owned a rick...but will buy one now,,,what tune was that you were playing?
+Edward Ralph Thanks! That was one of mine. But the bass riff is reminiscent of Rob Stewarts "Do you think I'm sexy?" Cheers
WOW...! sounds great..........
+ip man Thanks! :-)
Good tone - Lemmys bass-sound has a bit less bottom-end, since he turns the bass on his amps off completely and only uses the treble pickup on his ricks ;-)
But it´s cool to hear the stereo sound - great example!
JacknCocaine Thanks :-) yeah Lemmys sound is surprisingly low in bass frequencies, but he uses it as an alt guitar basically so it has to be. Cheers Johan
Similar to Roger Glover's sound in 1972 (although not achieved quite like this). Almost same Marshall setup and bass but I'm not sure Glover used stereo in the studio or if he ever went direct back then.
***** I love the sound of Machine head, do you know what he used there? Cheers
That's definitely a 4001. Listen to the bass solo in Pictures of Home at 3:40. After that assent in 5ths he hits his open low E string and it overdrives something (either his amp or the desk, compressor,..something). But knowing they recorded "live" in a hotel corridor, my guess it's his 200 watt Marshall Major with silver coned 15" speakers in some odd 212 Marshall cabs (which you probably know a lot more about than I do). That's just a guess, but that's what my ears hear. I've owned a few 4003s, (only have a 1976 4001 now), but that sound is unmistakable.
Around that time he had Jazz Bass pickups installed in his black 4001, but I'm pretty sure it was after Machine Head. The guy that did that mod is named "Dawk" Stillwell. He's got a website and forum with a lot of info about Blackmore and Glover's gear. I think he talks about that bass somewhere.
Anyway, good video!
If you want it to sound closer... you REALLY need to crank the in and out volumes of the amp right up!! Lemmy's tone primarily comes from the amp being run wide open!!
+ThEcRaZ3dGaM3R Yeah indeed, here one channel is totally clean.
Fantastic
Superb sound mate!!
+Moog Bass Thanks!
did your foot fall asleep? ? haha.Ricks are the shit!
WOW! Realy sounds like Lemmy's bass! Great!
Thanks, that's a very nice compliment! Cheers Johan
Fender precision is a great sound, but the rick sound always impressed me a bit more the way it cuts through. I think they are heavy (?)
Another interesting topic from Johan.
Turn everything up and your good to go 👍🏻
+gagacrazy10 Always a good strategy ;-)
Not exactly the most Motörhead-ish tune but an amazing tone nonetheless. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work!
Able195 Thanks! Yeah it's more disco-rod stewart ;-)
Not quite Lemmy's tone. But I really like the tone you conjured up. Running a dirty and a clean together really works nicely on bass.
nice drum mix
Thanks! :-)
Awesome !! you got a new subscriber !!!
Yup Massive Volume is a huge part of Lemmy 's tone. This should be really close at 3.0 Richter scale volumes
I've had my 4003 since 10, I gig with it all the time...I've yet to try this...
My brother has the exact same Rick... He hoards it away from everyone..including myself. I think he has some Segeborn in him... LOL
Nice
+Luiz Furlan Thanks!
I think you got the grungy clank sound pretty well!
Amazing sound and amazing tune, it's stuck in my head and it's not going anywhere anytime soon :)
Johan, i have this question though. Is Ric-O-Sound less difficult to deal with in terms of phase issues than, say, splitting your signal through DI-box while using some standart axe like a JB? And running each signal through a guitar amp and a bass amp of course.
Hey great vid.. Is that distorted tone just coming from the rick o sound input?? Thanks Danny
Thanks Dan, the bridge pickup is routed to a cranked Marshall. Cheers Johan
Nice sound, i think what is lacking for the Mötörhead sound (apart being Lemmy...) is perhaps the volume. Lemmy plays AFAIK a non master volume Marshall in 4X12 cabinet(s) (in the vid you say you use 4X12, but in the notes you write 4X15 ?)at full volume. It's sure difficult to do the same in an appartment. I guess the way you go is the right to approximate it at reasonable sound pressure levels. But you know the adage: there is no replacement for volume.
I don't understand the rick-O-sound trick: if you need to split signals with the device shown(don't know the name in english..), why not simply use the two outputs with one regular jack for each. Or the second one allways gives the mix, even if the first have a jack pluged in? The question may sound naive , but i never use such a bass, let alone open one to study the wiring.
+ant Sor Thanks, yeah Lemmy used a 1976 Super Bass with a 4x12 and a 4x15, so this is a compomise. The Volume is indeed an important factor, but in a mix you can get sufficient results like this. Cheers Johan
Awesome
dGladiator Thanks :-)
Niiiiiice... reeeeeally nice! \m/
+Omar Falero Thanks Omar!
Hi Johann. Do you own a music store in Sweden? Just curious. Great rythm and beautiful tone.
Where did you get the stereo plug from?
Awesome Videos by the way, keep rockin' man.
Ezekiel Verdan Thanks man, that's just a lousy consumer grade plug. Consult your local store for a decent one. Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn
Thanks for the response.
