Sly is everything that a lot of these artists today that is deemed weird, special, intelligent, charismatic wants to be, but will never be because you can't fake this kind of persona, Sly is that artist!
Thank God my parents had great taste in music! I had the pleasure of growing up listening to some of the finest musicians ever, this includes Sly Stone!
I do believe Hendrix was tampering with that new style (funk) towards the end of his life. I'm sure Sly and Hendrix would have collaborated, but sadly things always work out badly for black artists.
I always loved Sly and family stone. He was a musical prodigy. I have always felt that people that are like this tend to get into drugs because their mind is always going. I Hope he is well today.
Every time I see Sly and hear him sing I hear everything that music has been missing. He is such an incredible talent. A brilliant mind. I don't think anyone has ever filled that void. Sly, if you're reading this, I want you to know the world needs your music again. We need you. We always have.
Thanks for sharing this. You can see how intelligent and talented he was, with those creative wheels spinning in his mind at all times. Just saw theFamily Stone last night and they thank him for his music throughout the set.
Recently saw that he has been compensated for some serious losses, due to mismanagement of his accounts, and he's back on his feet, after years of hardship. Good on you Sly!! Many great hits...
The first concert I went to was Sly and the family Stone with Rufus and the Ohio players at the municipal auditorium in Nashville Tennessee 1974 I was 5 years old
Paul Schaeffer said during the rehearsal after the show Sly hit him up for $300..."...to get to the airport..." or some such bullshit. Sly swore he'd pay it back upon reaching his destination. Paul felt sorry for him and gave it to him fully expecting to never see it again. Paul said he thought it was a shame considering the heights this man had reached in showbiz. Sure enough Paul doesn't hear from Sly. Three years later Bobby Womack is on the Letterman show and the first thing Bobby does at the soundcheck is walk up to Paul, hand him five crisp $100 bills and says, "...this is from Sly...".
Wow what an amazing intelligent person he is, love him to death. His songs instilled Life Experiences into my soul. I hope that makes sense, love you sly
I swear when white people embrace black culture they always insist on separating it from it’s history of struggles in America and lecture people on colour how “race doesn’t matter” completely out of nowhere while ignoring the lives artists like Sly had to come from.
@@NatsumiTakanawa Exactly. People were still being lynched. I'm sure the band faced problems that only the Black members had to deal with. Also, Sly didn't put Funk on the map. That would either be James Brown or George Clinton with P-Funk.
Thank you, for posting this! For those of you asking, "what the hell is it"? This, is called music children. Sounds good, don't it? Those things, they're using to create these magically delicious, and funky sounds, are called "instruments", and their voices are included in that category. Back then, people new the difference between musicians, and people who recite bad poetry, accompanied by computerized noise. It takes years of dedication and practice, to learn how to play instruments. Comparatively, it takes a few weeks to learn how to make sounds on a computer. How in the world, can people pay money to watch people who can't sing a note, walk back and forth across the stage, saying things like, "...and wave 'em like you just don't care"? Or, the POP music formula, take the hook from a popular song, have someone who can actually sing, sing it, and then have some overrated rapper speak the verse in a radio friendly cadence. Oh, and let's not forget the beeps every other word, because it takes so much talent, to come up with words that rhyme with, "bitch"! Which, is all people from Oakland are capable of producing now - apparently. Long live, the music of Sly and the other mighty funk artists, from back in the day. I'm looking at you, Commodores.
Sly is a intellectual type. Here he was at his finest mentally, very lucid. Imagine if he was not into drugs, what more he could have accomplished. The man is a music genius. The guitar player have a broken foot, just noticed.
One cool cat. In 75' the Family Stone played in Nashville. Ohio Players opened. A funky time in Nashville that night! I wish Sly nothing but the best. Peace...
I saw Sly and the Family Stone at Winterland in 1970. They came on 2 1/2 hours after the opening act, Pacific Gas and Electric ended their set. There was a riot in the place with 50 to 100 people fighting from the stage moving toward the back of the ground floor, people were so upset with the long wait. Then they came on and opened with 'Thank you for letting me be Myself'. I had taken some acid with my wife and they were so loud we went outside and listened to the show on Post street with a few hundred locals who were drinking booze out of brown paper bags and all of us were dancing in the street together. Strange but fun night.
There probably is no greater wasted talent than that of Sly Stone, who has never managed to complete a whole album in the 34 years since this interview. As his own mama said, it's a loss to society; when he still was functioning, he was one of the greatest ever.

Letterman has no idea who he's really talking to. Sly has that "it" factor that you're only born with. So special and such a beautiful soul. And he is always about loving all people.
we share the same bday first off. of course he look lucid and healthy here but illness is a real sonuvvagun. I could only speculate what ails him today although he is 74! poor posture aside he is still living and a living legend. bless him and heck why make 30 years of crummy lps when your past is so darn good? love you Sly.
We enjoyed Sly's music but Sly enjoyed his own music also. Every performance I've ever seen of his he always was having a good time. The man enjoyed performing. And Paul Schaeffer' s band could perform with anybody. When they backed James Brown one night they tore it up.
This cat was producing top 10 hits at age 22-23 yrs old...he got screwed over by big record companies, burned brightly, quickly....then....faded into obscurity.
No matter what happened in your life Sly, I still wanna thank you for the music. It’s some of the greatest I’ve heard. Peace and love to you
He has the coolest voice.
Yes! He does!!!

This man has it all. Watching him talk is almost as cool as watching him sing.
Say what you want about how he ended up but this guy was ahead of his time!
Way ahead of his time. Well said
I do believe Hendrix was tampering with that new style (funk) towards the end of his life. I'm sure Sly and Hendrix would have collaborated, but sadly things always work out badly for black artists.
Probably about 30 years ahead of his time. Sly was musical genius on the level of Stevie Wonder. Those drugs are the damn devil.
Big time. Too bad drugs took over. A remarkable man.
Yeah you dam right missed thoughts days
You can just tell there's a multitude of wheels just turnin in his head before he even speaks ..... very intelligent guy ......
EVERYBODY was routing for Sly and STILL is....
So nice to see him playing with such joy. Especially when they kick it the hell UP towards the end.
One of the great tragedies of music

wooooo! Sly Stone singing my favorite song !
What a voice. He's right, he needed to perform. He was given a true gift.
I love his deep voice.
I also love the voice
Need way more of this - REAL, almost improvisational, sweet musical GENIUS on the spot!

important enough for you to unnecessarily point out tho right? right....
