My personal opinion, being a Thai person Culture teaches us to be good people. And Thailand has been accepting tourists from around the world for a long time. Therefore, we will be open to accepting and understanding this difference because they did not grow up in Thailand. For Thai people who grew up abroad and can speak a little Thai. If they don't tell us, we might not know because Asian people look similar. We may think them as tourists. In conclusion, it depends on how those people behave. Normally, Thai people like polite people. If you are nice to us we did good things in return.

Hi ! I'm Thai. Regarding "Farang" , this word is called for Western people, Thais call foreigners Farang because most of the foreigners who first came to Thailand were from France. The French first came to Thailand in the Ayutthaya period, during the time when King Narai the Great was trading with France. The French came to spread Christianity and Western culture in Thailand. Thais therefore called the French "Farang" and called foreigners who looked like the French "Farang" as well.
Nowadays, Thais call foreigners Farang in general, not limited to those from France. Foreigners from Europe, America, Australia, and New Zealand are all called "Farang" in Thailand. The word "Farang" is an informal word, but it is commonly used in everyday life.

The first westerner that came to Siam (now Thailand) during Ayutthaya period was Portuguese, not France. There were Persian who work for the Siam king, so it’s possible that the term ‘farang’ was from them. The Arab trader call white men as ‘farangji’ because the first crusaders that invade them are franks from France.

My daughter was born in Denver and raised in the u.s every time she went back to Thailand .my sister and my niece took her out in Bangkok when she tired to spoke in thai language a lot of Thai people they said so cute i think so many Thai people when they know some ones doesn't look like thai . when they tried to speak thai they always love to help them out how to say in thai. Correctly.

- Farang ~ I think it refer to the westerner.
- Khaek ~ refer to Indian or country near by like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. as well as the middle east people.
- Asia ~ refer to all the asian looking people incase we don't know where they came from. If we know then we usually call them by their country name. For ex. Chinese ~ khon cin/jeen, Japanese~ khon Yipun etc. I hope that help. 😊
And about Anthony quesion. I can't answer for all Thai but from my experience Thai people don't judge whether you can speak Thai or not. I mean even if you are Thai that live abroad and can't speak Thai. If you try to speak Thai to Thai people, they will find you adorable and admire that you are trying or will even try to teach you some words if they can. So don't worry guy. We don't judge at all.

Hi Anthony and Caroline! I was born in Bangkok but grew up in SoCal since the age of 2. I speak Thai brokenly and with an American accent. No one has ever judge me for not being fluent. More often, Thai people would practice their English with me because they don’t meet too many foreigners. One thing that does bother me is when I get treated better because Thai people see me as a foreigner, not as Thai person. I don’t like the attention and prefer to blend in like a local Thai. When I’m in Thailand I want to be Thai, not American.
Thais are seriously so cool! Super sweet and understanding, no wonder so many foreigners fall in love with the country and the people 😊🫶🏻

At most, Thais might be confused to see a Thai person who can’t speak Thai. But I don’t think anyone would act harshly on it.
About the term “Farang,” what can i add from other comments is: it’s used pretty loosely. While it usually refers to Caucasians, if someone from another race is from a Western country like the US or Europe, they might still get called Farang. For example, someone might call Anthony "Farang" , but it’s probably just to highlight your nationality after noting that you're Korean. Sometimes, it’s even used to poke fun at Thais who have lived abroad.
**Tip:** Any restaurant that got Wongnai User’s Choice award is must visit. It's always good, much better than Michelin's. 🤤

1:20 Actually, I don't recommend you guys eat at Suki Teenoi for the Taste only,
because the Number 1 reason that they're famous is the Worthiness at the price.
( I mean the taste is Okay, it's a decent choice for this kind of restaurant. )
Beside that, you guys could know how Sukiyaki or Shabu-shabu gonna be like.
It's depend on how Quality the stuffs are,
they don't need chefs because you're the one who cook. Ha ha

but it usually refer to the White People only,
( mostly Europeans before some of they move to America. )
Because around 200-300 years ago,
there are European Boatman came to this area for Explorer or Trading.
At that time the White People didn't look familiar to us.
unlike the Asian people or Middle East people
who already have been contact before.
So... there become the word to call this kind of person,
and it's a neutral word, nothing negative.

"Farang" is for caucasian guys. I think it used to call "French" in Ayuthaya era. As I know we also called Chinese as "jek", Indian as "kaek" as well. As a native Thai, I've never judged anybody or even Thai who raised in foreign countries. In fact I think it is adorable how they tried to speak their mother tongue language moreover I think I have responsibility to give them more attention since they are not used to Thai environment. yeah that's it. I hope you enjoy living here.

Most Thai people are kind-hearted and like to help those who are in difficult situations without any discrimination based on race. We live in a society like siblings or family. Spicy spaghetti that you have eaten in Thailand is called "Pad Kee Mao" or drunken spaghetti or sometimes it is in the form of stir-fried instant noodles in Thailand call "Pad Mama Kee Mao = pad mean stir-fry, Mama, mean instant noodles band, Kee Mao mean drunken". The origin of the name is that the extremely hot and spicy taste when you eat it while drunk will reduce the hangover symptoms and feel back to normal.

I have a place to recommend. Nang Loeng Market, they have rich history and the food inside is extremely local and not expensive. I went there last week, not to miss a dessert shop that sells mini tarts 50 bhat for 10 pieces ❤

I was born in thailand, moved to the UK my thai was awful! Can't read can't write even now lol. I found that when I tell them I'm thai but I can't read or write thai, thai people seem to become even more friendly.. 😂😂

I had an Indonesian Chinese when visiting Singapore was being judged for not able to speak Chinese and I had to tell the hawker off that she was not allowed to study Chinese in her country back then.

The Big C in Rama 4, it was "Carrefour" before. (more than 10 years ago)
Long time! Never heard of Carrefour. Was that a market as well?
@@ChovyTravelCarrefour is a french supermarket chain there used to be around 60 Carrefour in Thailand but the business was sold to Big C (more than 10years ago) and they changed every single one of them and rebranded Big C Extra, thats why Big C extra is always bigger than the regular Big C.

For a more Thai experience I recommend you visit ท่าพระจันทร์ or Ta Pra Jun. It's not a shopping street but it's an area where they sell Amulets and have famous fortune tellers. Its a popular spot in Thailand. Also it's near Thsmasat University a very iconic university for school of law and political science. You can find many old schools street food there as well. From there you can travel buy boat to many places as well.

Farang has 2 meanings. First, Guava (fruit); Second it means caucasians either from USA or Europe, but not includes asian-americans and african-americans. K Village is more family-dining out place, it is more crowded on weekends. There is also a farmer market occasionally in the middle space on weekends’ mornings. 😃

That’s actually the Big C we go to. I even have a vlog on it 😆 It gets very busy. It’s very popular with foreigners due to the location, a lot of foreigners work around there.

The garlic pork, spicy chicken and Somtum looks so yummy. Btw, I heard from many Koreans in YT that there're the popular Korean Restaurants called "Dong E" and "Jang Won BBQ", both located in Korean Town at Sukhumvit 12. Jang Won BBQ is the first Korean Restaurant in the area for about 30 yrs. So if you miss Korea or crave for Korean foods you need to go to Korean Town since there're many restaurants, shops and Supermarket that sell korean products in this mall.

@@ChovyTravel Not yet, but I read lots of good reviews of this restaurant from both Thai and Korean. I recommend Dong E to you because I saw a video of Korean girl took her parents to eat at Dong E. They all said it's delicious and some dishes even yummy than in Korea. If you never try, you'll never know. 😊❤️ ✌️

Suki Teenoi is very famous among young generations due to its value per money spent. It is a hotpot buffet with late 2xx bht/person. The quality is ok but when plugging in price. It’s worth to experience it.

I usually use Baby mild (2 in 1 organic baby fabric wash & softener) for cloths washing and DMP baby bath (Green or Purple) to take a shower.

I just went to this Big C this morning. I am living in this area. K Village used to be very famous a few years ago but nowadays, there are too many community malls like this throughout Bangkok but it's still quite famous among Thais and Expats.

Unfortunately yes we’re back. We had a great time there even just a few weeks. We miss everything about Thailand already. I couldn’t go to all places I wanted but at least we got to enjoy lots of things. My boys made fun of me for not seeing “Butter bear” the famous mascot at Emshere 😆

Yes we love Butter bear but she will be at that mall only Friday evening and in the afternoon on weekends, so we couldn’t see her plus tons of people already waiting to see her since 2 or 3 am in the morning 😂 no way we could do it.
Bkk metroolitan is huge by 7000 sq.km ,17.5 mmillion people .many interesting things and places to explore. Such as lotus pllantation field,Si moom muang vegetables and fruits wholesale market,Bangkrachaorreserving green area.Bang khuntien seaside.Khokret cultural village.
It’s endless 😅 So much hidden gems in Bangkok and we’re on the hunt for a lot of them 😁

I think Thais are more open to diversity, We have many Half Thais- children born oversea so we do understand if many of them can not speak Thai at all, but you can't blame them because they born overseas, they grow up in that country, their first language is not Thai, so it's understandable if them unable to speak Thai at all.
In that case mostly we tend to act or speak on simple gestures, simple words like we do with a foreigner who can't speak Thai.
btw 'Farang' mostly means white people.

Thai people who were born in another country, and yet can not speak Thai well, seem to get treated by local Thai people better than normal local Thai if they act to the people politely, as our culture is totally+very much different from your experience in other countries. Most Thai people will be very impressive whenever they meet any foreigner who is trying to communicate with them with Thai, that I think you would know this case very well. My generation is 90s (Gen y), I have seen so many popular actors and actresses who have poor Thai accent on TV when I was young, we thought it was cute and cool in that time.

We definitely do want to drive around Thailand as well. Only concern we have is that a lot of people keep telling us not to drive because of the crooked cops. We never dealt with the cops so we wouldn’t know 🤷 However, we do listen to recommendations/tips/warnings

In Japan, if you grow up abroad and don't speak/read/write Japanese well, people do judge and call you "a returnee" (帰国女子/男子) On the contrary, Thai people love it when I tell them I spent half of my life in the States and Japan, even with my far-from-perfect Thai. As long as you try, most Thai people will be supportive, relardless of the language barriers. However, some can be harsh when they see that I don't know much about Thai buddhist practices because they expect me to keep going to Thai temples overseas. "Farang" imo means Caucasian. If Asian I would try to suggest which country. If you're Asian looked speak English fluently you will be Asian English speaker not Farang or American 😅. Thai people would not look down or even care if you're Thai but cant speak Thai. They just try to communicate like you're their family you know like "Asian parent" 😅😅

I was just wondering when you guys would come to this area. K village is literally minutes from my house so all the malls you visited today is right around the corner. If you ever return I hope I run into you guys! Anyways... regarding Thais not being able to speak Thai, my sister lives in NY and every year she and her family would come back to visit. My nephews hardly speak Thai at all but in general no one here question that. In fact they find it cool that they attempt to speak Thai at all. When people realize they couldn't speak Thai they just speak English. I also have some friends who are completely caucasian but grew up here, went to Thai school and speak more Thai than English.
As far as K village goes, there are pet potty areas and a few pet friendly semi outdoor restaurants. Across the alley from them is JP animal hospital which is a very comprehensive large pet hospital. My dogs were born here. And across the other side of the alley is Kingkong pet shop which is a nice large 2 storey pet emporium and pet hotel. Inside K village is a couple of pet shops too. K village often host weekend food and farmer's market events with lots of food stalls and there are pet events as well. Activities are usually on werkends. It isn't the best community mall, but it's my convenient go-to place being so close to home. If you are coming back please let me know. I'd love to meet you guys. 😊

@@ChovyTravela few years ago just a few steps from K village there used to be a North Korean regime run restaurant complete with a nightly dance and singing show. Plenty of photos promoting North Korea too. I don't know where they moved to, but it would make for a very intersting review since it's a very different take on Korean restaurants in Bangkok.
Anyways... did you know that both Big C and K village are on Sukhumvit soi 26 which is in very close proximity to the Phromphong BTS station and Emporium and Emquartier as well.

For communication concern, it's individual. I don't think I'm able to define Thai people into one exact type. It's not even base on generation or language capability. Basically, it could depend on how much effort they want to spend at that time. I experience so many widely different cases.

Ans: This word refers to foreigners in general. However, because white European characters are most distinct, Thais have come to use "Farang" as being white Europeans/N. Americans/Australians/New Zealanders.
2. Do your countrymen treat people of the same ethnic group differently if those people do not speak the local language well?
Ans: Yes! Local Thais feel that if you do not speak Thai well and/or not well versed with everyday Thsi culture/tradition, you are a "Farang". This belief is held even in cases where you can prove that you were born here in Thailand. To me this just reflects more of a lack of experience with the diaspora population of Thais by locals.
3. Are there many Tee Noi hotpot restaurants?
Ans: Yes! There are many around Bangkok.
4. Has anyone ever been at Big C on Rama IV?
Ans: No, I have not been there before. I use to drive by there a d K Village daily twenty or more years ago. K Village was frequented o ly several times, as we were there mainly for golf.

I guess the spicy spaghetti you ordered might be what Thais call Drunken Spaghetti or Pad Kee Mao Spaghetti. It's similar to Pad Kaprao but with more spices and if there's basil leaves, it's Pad Kee Mao. The meaning is as the name suggests. We usually eat it as a snack when drinking alcohol. So it's very spicy. But some people can eat it as a main dish.😊

This year, there is a Korean UA-cam channel named Cullen Hateberry that Thai people love and follow by millions. He can speak a little Thai and speaks more than 70% wrong. If you follow the news in Thailand, you will know how famous they are now and are presenters of many products in Thailand. Sometimes you don't have to be able to speak Thai to be accepted. We accept who you are if they respect and care about our culture. Being able to speak Thai only makes life in Thailand easier. We haven’t found one yet, since we are picky with Korean food 😆😅 but that tteokbokki was good (so far the best one we tried in Bangkok) Some of the Chovy Fams said Suki Teenoi is good for the value but quality is not up there, for your reference. 😊

In my opinion, Farang means foreigner .mostly call white people not like Afirican-American or Asian-American. Farang in thai also means Gava fruit. Beacause Gava in side is white, same as white people skin. that is what I believe. lol
