    This reminds me of when my 14-year-old brother decided to read the lotr trilogy in one weekend. He literally did NOTHING else, except sleep a bit and a few meals. He did it! He started as soon as he got home from school on Friday and finished on Sunday afternoon.
    It also reminds me of when I (very stupidly) read lotr for the fourth time in my final term at University, just before my finals! In the end I did OK, but I wouldn't recommend doing this!

    Actually George R.R. Martin is a huge fan of Tokins books. So some Charakters are based of the Charakters from Tolkin. For example Samwell Tarly on Samwise or Pip on Pippin, Jon on Frodo

      Yeah, I realised there were a lot of similarities and ended up coming across quite a lot of info about how much George R R Martin loves Tolkien - so nice to see how Tolkien has influenced other works!

    I got LotR from the library as a one volume book and dragged my feet starting it because I was intimidated by having to read 1,000 pages on a deadline, but knowing someone can read that much of it in a day helped. Currently 500 pages in!

    The first book of the series is 'The Hobbit' actually. If you look at the first chapter of The Hobbit you will see that it is called 'An Unexpected Party' and the last chapter of The Hobbit is called 'A Long-Expected Party' which is also the name of the first chapter in 'Fellowship Of The Ring' or the first book of the series.

    I would recommend reading The Belgariad by David Eddings. It's 5 books, starting with Pawn of Prophecy. There is a second series of books known as The Mallorean as well as a few stand alone books. Well worth the read. Each of the series is similar to LOTR because they are a continuous story, even though they came out one at a time.

    hobbits life is the best life, honestly. anytime JRR Tolkien describes it I get so incredibly happy 🌿right?! his writing style is so immersive, and beautiful! I didn't find the books intimidating at all, even though I was very scared to start the series :p

    You spoke a bit about themes of Fate in LotR and you're right. Fate and Doom are words that come up often, especially in the Silmarillion. Long story, short: Before the world was made, all of history was sung by the gods as part of a primordial symphony and a clash between order and corruption. The material world is simply repeating that history. Some Elves (Elrond and Galadriel in particular), powerful spirits like Sauron, Wizards, and some Men have the uncanny ability to get hints about the future that, technically, is repeating itself. Like most prophesies, they're vague and have a bittersweet way of coming true.

    Is definitely possible. I have regularly re-read Lord of the Rings every few years. Usually takes me around 9 and a bit hours. But then I have always read extremely fast. Somewhere between 170 and 180 pages an hour. Somehow I just lose myself in the story and next thing I know. the book is finished. To this day I have to be careful. If I go to bed at 10 pm and start a series, I will finish book two by 2 am and have to make myself turn the light off and sleep (instead of reading book three) because of course work and commitments. Has cost me a fortune over the years. Have over 4k books in my Kindle library alone and still growing.

I mean, the style is still quite different, but I love the atmosphere Sapkowski creates as well as the mythical/whimsical world. Though I don't want to fuel wrong expectations, the books are still very different, but both really beautiful.

I started reading The Fellowship of the Ring, read about halfway through - and stopped :( I then bought the three-book bind-up edition and maybe I'll try again sometimes in the future. I'm glad you enjoy them! :) I love these 24-hour-readathons!

    • @Thelaretus
      @Thelaretus 2 роки тому +1

      Funny you should say that, because it's just halfway through (Council of Elrond) that the full scope of the story is revealed to the hobbits and the story gets more engaging. You should push at the very least through to the end of FotR, because the story grows up in phases from a Hobbit-like (more innocent, a little childish or fairy-tale-like) beginning to a more epic proportion and only by the end you'll have actually felt the true pace.

    Glad you enjoyed them... I have only read the first but those films were my youth, over and over again, often falling asleep to them, in them. It's been so long now I need to expand my LOTR world and experience so I must get to the books again. You're in for a real treat with the films. They're 'better' than the books, in a way, I glean. And then there are the extended editions. And the score by Howard Shore is just divine. I absolutely love your vlogs

      The only thing the films have with the book doesn't is the music. Otherwise, the book is infinitely better; the films are just action movies skinned under the surface of Tolkien's work; the text, however, is a deeply philosophical travel to a world of soul and truth, that pullulates alive in songs and poetry and is masterfully described with the word being beautiful in themselves.

    When I first read LotR I borrowed FotR by late afternoon and finished it by sunset the next day; but Tolkien changed my reading style: before him, I read fast and dynamically, minmaxing time; but after FotR in 24 hours, TT took me a week, and RotK a month, as I started reading very slowly and delightfully, seduced by the beauty of the words and carefully constructed sentences and masterful descriptions. Tolkien's been my favourite author ever since, and The Hobbit + LotR + The Silmarillion are all title as my favourite books ever written (and I've read a lot of literature of all time periods and languages).
    9:33 Is that a crease? Argh.. no, no, no, don't fold it, no... NOOOOOO!!!!! D:
    25:27 OMG, you really trust your hands! I'm so clumsy I'd for certain end up destroying my book.
    Anyway, that edition looks great! I love that they kept Tolkien's original cover drawings, but redrew them in a more modern style and an elegant dark background. Very original and traditional at the same time, just like LotR; I really love it.

    I’m really enjoying LotR so far, I haven’t watched the movies either. So it’s new to me, but familiar as well because of Bilbo’s story 😊
    Note: This is not meant as any sort of attack, just an observation.
    I feel like ‘24 hour readathon’ has lost its meaning on a lot of channels. The ‘..athon’ part was taken from marathon, so it denotes a long and tiring endurance period. If it was a ‘24 hour danceathon’ they wouldn’t stop at 11 or 12 and go home to sleep. 😂 Maybe just call it a book-binge or something?? 🤷‍♀️

    Speed reading Tolkien is not the same as reading Tolkien. You can race thru Le Louvre Museum in Paris in 24 hrs and think you viewed them all in 24 hrs but you just looked at them and did not really "view" them"; you can put Bach on fast forward and believe you listened to all of Bach's symphonies in one hour but you just heard them - not listened to them. Likewise, what you've done is you've looked at all the words in the LOTR but you did not really "read" the LOTR. This is sad. With this mentality you will get to be 90 yrs old and never have really lived

      Definitely varies depending on my level of attention, distractions and of course the book itself (how big the text is etc) but I’d say with no distractions maybe 50-70🤷🏻‍♀️

    Why would you want to read a masterpiece like this or any other in 24 hours? Reading is something that has its own pace and shouldn't be pressed into a time frame. Next thing you are going to tell me is you used speed-reading, too. What an experience that must be.

    • @ciarascorner
      @ciarascorner  2 місяці тому

      Don’t worry, you can just read at your pace and I’ll read at mine

      @@ciarascorner I am not worried, and you certainly are free to do whatever you want, I just have a different opinion of reading a book. It is not a competition or a race, you know. Too much nowadays already is, attention spans creeping toward the miniscule dimension. There is something to be said about sitting in a cafe or any other place and letting yourself be enveloped (slowly) by the fantastic world of Tolkien. But I don't know how one can achieve that in a time frame maybe adequate for your favourite blog.

      The goal was simply to see how much of the series could be read in a 24 hours dedicated to reading, but again, I reiterate that there’s no pressure or indication that others should read in the same way, this was just a fun challenge

    • @ciarascorner

      I think from an immersion point of view, it was quite enjoyable to get so much of the series read in one go, although definitely easier to spot extra details when on a slower/longer read
