I am Romani (Gypsy). I have tried comparing my language with Sinhala people I have met and I do not find the same parallels that I do with Rajasthani / Panjabi. In addition to language we also find that the Romani dress, customs, beliefs & dance / music also parallels that found in Rajasthan / Panjab regions such as the Thar desert

I think that I India needs to help the Romani people and acknowledge publically, that they are of Indian descent. I also think the Indian government should give Roma visiting India, honorary Indian citizenship.

The Romani people are the lost tribes of Ancient India. Like Israel, the Indian govt must recognize them and treat them at par with other Indians.

Genetic testing showed our Indian roots. I wish Romnichels would go to Europe and trace their roots, many of the kids think they are only Gypsies they don't understand where they came from and have lost a lot of the culture.

Not all Kosovan's are of Indian ancestry. It is just the Romani (Not to be confused with Romanians or the country Romania. Romani comes from the Sanskrit word Ramani). The majority of Kosovans are not Romani.

The word Romani comes from the Sanskrit word "Raman". They originate from Rajasthan / Panjab region of India and left around 1026ad due to Islamic invasion. They then made a fast journey into what is now Turkey but was then part of the Byzantine Empire where Greek & Armenian was spoken and Christianity was the religion. The word Romanian however comes from the latin word Roman and they are white Europeans who live in the country of Romania. The word are just coincidentally similar.

Romani is also very similar to Rajasthani & Panjabi.
Romani uses 'o' on the end of masculine words like Rajasthani whereas most other modern Indian languages use an 'a'. e.g. Kalo for black compared to Kala in most other.
Romani also has many words shared with modern Rajasthani such as grass is char(o) where as in Panjabi it is ghar and in Hindi it is ghas..
With regards to Panjabi we can see a common shift of bh to ph & gh to kh. e.g. kher / khar v's ghar or Phra v's bhai...

    Thank you MidiraRas. Kind words.
Yes we have a drum called a dowli which we hit with stick much like your dol and we also have a horn which I'm told is like an Indian horn. The biggest is the guitar which we brought to Europe which is obviously like the Zitar. It is possible that Guitar means "song string" from the Indian word geet (song) and tar (string). Flamenco is original our music / dance and is paralleled to Rajasthan.

It is almost evident that the Roma originated in north of India their language Romani belongs to Indo-aryan groups of language. India, their MOTHERLAND should pay attention at those people, the Indian authorities could at least send a delegation to cooperate with Europe to solve the Roma problem.
We are in 2013, India is yet deaf, dumb and blind , they are washing their hands.

In 1400ad which was around the time that the Romanian king started capturing them to us them as slaves, a large group of a few hundred are recorded as been given safe passage through Hungary and they appealed to the King of the Holy Roman Empire (Germany and surrounding area) for asylum.A group of around 100 then split away and made their way into Holland and Belgium then made their way down into Spain. The group who stayed in Germany are the Sinte and Spain is the Kale. Rroma from Romania.

Regardless of this the facts are that the Romani language is closely related to languages of the modern Rajasthani & Panjabi regions of NW India.
The biggest connection with Sinhala / Sinhalese is possibly in the legend of Rama. There is a Romani folklore story that says we descend from mighty king called "Rom". Could this be connected to the Hindu tale of King Rama?

Very true, and it helps to remember that "Romania" as a country and the name "Romanian" for the people who live there did not exist before the 19th Century. Romania formed from three regions, Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania, and the people who lived there were called "Wallachs" or "Vlachs," from a German term for people who speak Latin and languages descended from Latin, who were the majorities in these regions.

Sinte are a branch of the same group who came into Europe in around 1300ad that all Romani are from. There is no evidence presented to support that Romani is related to Sinhalese any more than it is Sanskrit (being the original language that all Indo-Iranian languages of India including Sinhalese descends from). There is however totally sufficient information openly displayed proving that Romani descends from both Rajasthani & Panjabi (both neighbouring provinces to one another).

Proof that Romani is related to both modern Rajasthani & modern Panjabi. Romani & Rajasthani use 'o' on masculine words where as all others use 'a'. Example is kalo (black), Tiro (your), Ando (in), Kako (uncle). The inequivalent in Hindi for example is Kala, tera, anda, kaka. In addition to this we see Rajasthani & Romani share the same corrupted words. Example is char (grass) which is Panjabi is ghar and in Hindi is Ghas. With regards to Panjabi we see a common shift of gh to kh & bh to ph

All the information I've seen including Wikipedia has no mention of Lubana. Jatts and many Panjabis I understand to possibly be from the Saka of the Indo-Scythian Empire which is supported by the fact that they carry the R1a Y DNA marker which is also common in the Ukraine and parts of eastern Europe. Hopefully when India has more DNA tests done, information will reveal all

As for leaving India then experts have come together to look at our language and have discovered that by looking at the words from it's Rajasthani / Panjabi roots, we must have left India shortly after 1000ad. Romani is two gender and soon before this time it would have been three gender. Corruption in our language show it is from Rajasthani / Panjabi regional prakrit of around 1000ad

Well Historians have proved that majority of castes like Rajput, Jat, Gaur Brahmins originated from Lubana. Rajputs are those who conqured a place and became king.Jats were basically nomads and then they settled for farming and settled in different places of India, Brahmins are those who studied vedas, puranas and became priest.Caste is a persons profession. But the remaning lubana sticked to their professions and stayed as traders till 1500 ad.Lubana Sikhs became farmers around 1500 ad punjab.

I've studied Romani in comparison to Indian languages for over 5 years now. I have only ever seen one claim which then got repeated on Wikipedia. There has never once been any evidence put forward to support such a claim so we must accept it as non-factual until otherwise. I have however compared Romani with Sinhala myself and I do not find it is any closer that Rajasthani, Panjabi & Sanskrit. In fact I find many words not as comparable other than the words like pani which are in all Hindustani

  • @Tsigano
    @Tsigano  11 років тому +37

I totally agree. thorough DNA testing on the Romani has been carried giving quite quite conclusive result however thorough DNA testing among the various people and groups of India is still in much need.
I would be interested in seeing DNA testing on the Rajputs as lore explains they have various origins so it would be interesting to see results. Especially those claiming descent from Ram(a) as Rama had a dark skin coloring so that would suggest a non Indo-Aryan ancestry.

Before we gone on let me make clear that I am Romani and I live in and have large amount of family in the UK so I know how we are dark skinned up until 1900s and many have recently lost due to marrying out. The Irish travellers you are speaking of aren't even Romani. They are called Pavee and speak Gamin which is an Irish language. DNA confirms they are Irish in origin. Please stop romanticizing facts over myself and my people

There are no real Gypsies in India. That is a misused word left from British rule. Gypsy is short for Egyptian due to mistaken identity. No people in India were ever mistaken for Egyptian whilst being in Europe. There is evidence proven as of yet to who in India the Romani descend from. Drawing conclusion to nomads in India is like saying all Indians in Europe or America who drive a taxi descend from Indian taxi drivers. Most Romani don't even travel and many sell horses or are merchants.

No they aren't. There are no Romani in India. Romani are of Indian descent but the earliest records for them is from their arrival into southeast Europe in 1300ad. Other than that there is no group in India that have any proven link to Romani. Romani are we know as fact by their language and culture are from Rajasthan / Panjab (Thar Desert region) and their DNA and genetic studies confirm their Indian ancestry.

  • @Tsigano
    @Tsigano  11 років тому +7

That isn't to say that the Lubana aren't related to the Romani in any way. There just aren't any Romani in India. We do know that the word Romani (Rromano, Rromani, Rromane) comes from the Sanskrit word 'Raman' as in both language it means the same

Sir, im from Kosovo and your indians brothers live very good here, they are not discrimination from none simple they live like in their home.
But we wonder why India didn't recognize our independence. If you call them brothers that's don't change nothing but if India recognize Kosovo independence then you don't have to call them brothers they will know that think it now if they consider you as a brother.

  • @Tsigano

The link to Sinhala is in North India if it exists. Proof of this is not through language as it is too far back but may be proven through DNA and folklore. Rama was described as dark which suggests he was not the Russian Indo-European Y DNA of R1a or R2 as that would suggest him as lighter skinned. Therefore he must have older Indian ancestry such as Y DNA of H. Sinhala in one report suggests they are high in H DNA as are the Rromane. Rama goes from north India to Lanka as do Sinhala.

Answer to "You can pinpoint that all Romani people came from Panjabi...impossible". - Then you should look at the discoveries on our DNA research before you try and make false claims about us. We come from a single origin. The language of the various Romani branches also confirm this. It is more Rajasthani than Panjabi. respected experts who have spent years researching us are suggesting the Thar Desert region which sits on both.Look through my vids and you'll see even our dance confirms this!!

This isn't to say I do not think Sinhala have ancestral connections with Romani. I just don't like false info being pushed. We want truth and not dreams. It is not language that connects my people with Sinhala as our language is proven to be Rajasthani / Panjabi in roots. DNA however shows we have a deeper Indian root which may bring us closer to Sinhala. Sinhala come from Northern India and our name Romani comes from Rama(n).Rama the king went to (Sri) Lanka but was from North India

Dinapolis. You are lying over facts. You making false claims about Rromane saying Sinte are a different group to the Roma, Kale & Romanichal. They all came into Europe as one group. This is proven through DNA and language. The first records of Rromane are recorded as appearing into SE Europe in around 1300ad where they are vets. They then make their way up into Albania and Bulgaria where their numbers grow to many.
