The Dave’s Hopper comes from the vise of uber fly designer Dave Whitlock. Mr. Whitlock may be the most prolific designer in the world at the moment with several what have become standard designs to his credit. Dave’s Hopper is one of the most popular flies in the bins, but one of the harder patterns to tie correctly. The spun deer hair head and collar give many tyers fits, and the knotted legs aren’t all that easy or quick to do either. I fished this fly for many years before I came up with my Charlie Boy Hopper, and can attest that it does indeed catch fish and float well. I find that this fly sits a little low in the water and does become waterlogged after a few fish, thus the reason I started messing around with foam. Nonetheless, the Dave’s Hopper is a great pattern to add to your fly box and tying repertoire. Tie a few up and throw something old school like this the next time you’re out!

RIP Dave Whitlock, easily one of the most innovative tiers ever. Thanks Charlie for being one of the greats to carry on the torch.

I thought I was the only one who ties like this Charlie. I'm right hand and the left handed also.. Pretty cool to see. Thanks for sharing all these old school flies tied in the modern age.

Thanks Charlie! I’ve heard from my mentors that Vince Marinaro & Ed Shenk used to just cut the head as square as they could in four cuts and go fish! 🤣🤫 thanks for the tutorial… 👍🏽

My favorite hopper pattern (sorry Charlie, although the Charlie Boy is a close 2nd)). A perfect combination of good looks and fun to tie. In regards to steaming deerhair, when I try that I end up partially melting the synthetics in the pattern. Crystal flash is the worst. Im not leaving the flies in the steam for too long and the melting seems to happen instantly. Thought?

Thanks! I fished these a lot last summer, and always wondered how to tie them. They are like 4 bucks a pop at my local fly shop, yikes.

Steam. I’m going to try that. When did you figure that trick out?

Nice tie Charlie. I realize that this is not your pattern, but I've never understood the reasoning behind the square shaped head.
