    Nice introduction to deaf culture. the female protagonist would be classified as a soda(when her brother who is deaf becomes an adult-Sibling Of Deaf Adult) The first interpreter portrayed was not a good one (a good interpreter can abbreviate the teachers oral talking, and is never involved like that one telling the teacher to slow down, It is the deaf students responsibility to speak up. Just pointing out some reactions I have with your nice, well done video.

      Some deaf people experience bad interpreters like him which is unfortunate. You are right about how good interpreters should be. Unfortunately some of deaf people don't always have a good interpreter. At least we can report if that happens. That's why we kept the bad interpreter in the film to show that even we struggle due to bad interpreters

      This comment is from a year ago I know... but I have to set things straight ( I am a real-life Educational Interpreter) the Interpreter that was portrayed in this movie was most defiantly acting in an unprofessional manner... For one I would not have to ask the teacher to slow down ( it's the approach of how you deliver the message as an Interpreter). Secondly, the Interpreter should speak to the teacher after class. Never interrupt the teacher in the middle of class. Next, speak to the teacher after class and discuss ways to help accommodate the Deaf student. You may as an Interpreter also encourage the Deaf student to approach the teacher with the Interpreter to speak of an approach that is more accommodating for a Deaf student.

    Deafness & profound hearing impairment can be a lonely thing to have . It leads to isolation which can lead to deep thinking . So as to try & make any communication count & not be wasted. I feel you have achieved this by your short film . So I believe there is some sort of weird balance made . I enjoyed the film , thank you .

      @Lisa Godin ,Thank you for your reply . You do show great understanding with what`s going on around you . Yes it is a visual world , I try to get people to speak to my eyes, many still don`t, even audiologists as they type at their computer still speaking . However I asked for a printout of my own audiogram. Using this & watching some of Dr Ted Venema talks on youtube I gained a far greater understanding of how hearing & speech works . Like you I`ve had my share of problems with hearing aids , I do believe they can be improved with technology & patience.If you like you can reply by email . tmz5272@gmail.com. All the best Lisa

    I liked the film but there was bits missing like Deaf culture, Deaf values and behaviors. I think James jumped ahead but wouldn't the fact they didn't share Deaf experiences... therefore she didn't lie.... i would rather it been more about his difficult time having access within school and public places vs Deaf community.

    That was an awful interpreter. What he did in the beginning was unprofessional and would not be tolerated in actuality. As an interpreter you are allowed to ask the instructor to repeat something or speak slower if at all possible but the way he got involved was extremely inappropriate.

    • @Jaydon05
      @Jaydon05 4 роки тому +4

      Adrian you'r right it was unprofessional! I still have my hearing but half of my family is deaf. i learned sign language when i was 7 years old. That interpreter should learn some social skills!

    • @locojazz5770
      @locojazz5770 4 роки тому +4

      Honestly, sometimes my Interpter has to interfere because professors don’t know what it’s like to have a Deaf student in class so they keep talking like a car without breaks.

    • @amberbanks
      @amberbanks 4 роки тому

      Speaking for hearing people, that professor needed it. It may be unprofessional towards the interpreter but as a hearing person I would have took away his job. He was ignorant. Teachers in college should be taught about how to help with deaf people. Just because he can hear doesn't mean he had to be ugly and disrespectful

    • @xxpowwowbluexx
      @xxpowwowbluexx 4 роки тому

      The interpreter was unqualified for the assignment. The instructor wasn’t speaking too fast. But even if he missed some info and needed to ask him to repeat it, he should have handled it differently and not been confrontational. That was very unprofessional, and you can see how embarrassed the student felt because of it. (Speaking as an interpreter.) It‘s a scene in a film that’s telling a story, but in real life that wouldn’t be appropriate at all. Unfortunately, though, some interpreters may behave that way. :(

      excuse me but what do you mean by SEE?

    • @citrusella-nomorecraptions
      @citrusella-nomorecraptions 5 років тому +3

      SEE usually refers to what used to be called SEE2, Signing Exact English. It's a specific type of manually coded English that uses some signs from ASL but also a lot of initialization and new signs for things that don't exist the same way in ASL, like "ing" endings or what-have-you.
      PSE is typically ASL signs but English syntax/grammar/order.

      She is a hearing actress. The only actors that are Deaf are James and Gwen's younger brother. Gwen is a hearing person who wants to be an interpreter because of her Deaf younger brother but James assumed that Gwen is Deaf until at the end when he found out that she isn't. He has never met deaf people before so that's why he assumed that Gwen is.

They should stay together at elementary hearing and deaf can grow up both able to communicate with hand signs for future. I wish education system need change for stop barrier communication not seperated.
