I’ve loved Code Orange since they had “kids” in their name & every album took me several listens to grow on me, this one most of all. I had mixed feelings initially, but I’m loving most of it now & my only complaint is some transitions are a bit too jarring or don’t seem very cohesive, still a very rewarding listen & I’m very impressed with their evolution as a band
I'm very impressed not only with this album but also with this review. Super well-articulated and fun to listen to. Honestly surprised I haven't seen any of your videos before.
Hoping that means ya stick around bud, cheers 🍺🍺🍺
@@themetalmeltdownofficial For sure, already dropped a sub. Cheers!
Haven’t really understood the hype behind this band, but I loved this album so I might go back and listen to their other albums again. 4/5
I absolutely love this album! A bit of 90s nostalgia, bit of SlipknoT, bit of Smashing Pumpkins, yeah!🤘🏿
I really liked this new Code Orange album and it drops on my birthday no less. I loved how experimental this album truly gets. Mirror is a great song that showcases Reba Meyer’s talent as a singer very well. There’s lots of 90’s alternative rock influences all over this album, which makes more sense since Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins does an appearance on Take Shape. I think that this album is even better than Underneath, which was also good but Forever and I Am King will remain as their best.
YOOO HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUD
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Thanks Robert, I’m now 30 years old.
Happy Birthday Mindful!
Happy birthday mindful!!
@@TheStrongBoyz19 Thanks Greg
Will check this out thanks for posting!
I've never listened to a Code Orange LP but songs here and there and after listening to The Above a few times, I honestly enjoyed it a lot. I think for a 90s music fan like me that is into nu-metal but also likes when the band goes hard, this album checks all the boxes. I think this is a good entry point for new fans and then you can see how hard they are in their other ones. Good review, sir 👍
As Underneath was an amazing record, I am so curious to hear what this band has to offer through the difference of material. They are a band that I didn't expect to be great from their pretty awesome discography.
I get super tired of the word "Cohesive" being treated as an automatic positive. In Utero, Angel Dust, Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness... none of them were cohesive. Hell, did Zepplin or Hendrix EVER record a cohesive album? The Above seems to have been inspired by non-cohesive albums, and for it to have turned out differently would have been a failure. I just hope it gets the ongoing recognition that it deserves.
I liked this album more perhaps. Right after track one and mid way into track two like "ah fuck it, just go for the ride". Good album
Only had a chance to listen to it once so far this afternoon but oh my the 90s influences for me are off the chart! btw I like that as it reminds me of when I was young(er) ! What I do like about Code Orange is they are not content with making the same album over and over and each have a their own identity. Not as good as The Underneath for me but that is based on one listen.
Probs a 4.5 for me. But this is the first video I've seen from you, and will be checking out more 👌 I loved this review
Very good after a couple of listens. Test of time. It forces me to get deeper into it.
Eh, I was kinda meh on this one, has its good songs but nothing AOTY worthy. Glad you got more out of it tho
I’ve listened to this album three times now and it gets better every time. Reba is the star of the show for me, I hope she does a solo album tbh. 4/5 for me.
I can't see that happening but that would be really cool.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Yeah it would be great, I’ll keep hoping 🤞🏻
She has her own thing which still has almost all the members but it's just her. 'Adventures'. Listen to 'heavenly'
Love Code Orange Forever and Underneath are still albums I’ll listen to a lot. This album has got me really interested in Checking it out, especially when listening to Jami’s commentary on the album process, influences on Danny Brown’s podcast. Mainly with Jami especially talking about being influenced by Experimental hip hop, Electronic and old school rock especially production-wise. I liked and disliked some of the singles. I expect this album to be odd and weird.
Code Orange & Danny Brown hangin' out? Thats dope, ill have to check that out.

I love their new cd.
The three duds you mentioned, in my humble opinion, in context with the whole album gives the album melody, mood and character that does stray away from the one trick pony aspect of making such monumental album in the bands discography like Underneath, but to me when bands do this it makes it memorable. Very much like Deftones’ White Pony or Smashing Pumpkins’ MCATIS that both had slower, softer melodies and other influences you didn’t hear in their earlier works. Production wise, I think it’s respectable in the same way that Baroness’ Gold & Grey where that whole was amazing and in my opinion their best written, but the production was not super polished like their previous work or even their current release.
I can't stop listening to the song Mirror, so good
it does!
Adventurous and straight up pop too on mirror. Going with my gut it's not as good as the last one but it was a good listen.
Never really got into there albums, there absolutely crazy live though, saw them support gojira awhile back and my main memory of them was the bass player accidently hitting himself in the head with his bass and literally playing the whole rest of there set completely busted open like a wwe wrestler after a chairshot 😂😂
Brilliant album
@dadsperspective7896 in your opinion. I've seen you throw negativity around a bunch. Drop it kid
@dadsperspective7896 yes! You muppet

Its not as good as underneath, a bit underwhelming but solid. Got some bangers for sure. I wouldnt say its a miss, and i do hope they continue to explore and mix flavors
I love it
I dont know what anyone else is gonna think
Atleast a 9/10
great album it has a lot diversity just like that old wooden ship.
I never have gotten into this band. I tried to give them a chance and checked out the singles...it wasn't really for me...🤷🤷🤷
Mirror for the best SOTY
one of the best for sure
The opening track is actually one of my favs. I think its meant to be disorienting.
Hell yeah, I love that opening track. To me its somehow reminisce of the "Strength through Wounding" intro that AFI did on Black Sails. Just really sets the tone for the whole album.
I didn't watch the video or listen to the album yet but I already disagree with you.
It does live to the hype but unfortunately 3.5/5 it has a few tracks that kinder sucked also to say that RIP Bray Wyatt who Code Orange did his theme in WWE
I listened to this last night, and it’s an awesome album. Probably not as good as Underneath, but definitely very solid. I love how it has such a unique identity compared to their other albums, it makes me excited for what they’re gonna do on the next one.
Not my cup of tea. The 90's grunge sound was already done. Compared to the albums "Underneath" & "Forever", The Above is a big step back
I loved this thing but it is pretty sprawling and I can see how someone wouldn't be into it
The experimentation in a one dimensional hardcore beatdown scene is admirable but this record really jumped the shark. Especially after how strong Underneath was. Jami is really holding the band back vocally and the Jon Davis impression just sounds dated
1.25/5
They sold out!!! No they didn't!! Well, kind off but not really!! Idfk
I like it. Or not! Or not!
Dude, you try way too hard to imitate Fantano. Like literally a cheap cringy copycat. It’s just so obviously phony. Just be yourself man!
Fun fact: Not imitating anyone. Just sittin' here talkin' about music the way that I want to. Whatever you make of that is up to you.
