This is the dumbest controversy I've heard in a while in the metal community. Why would anyone care about what a band dresses like more than the actual music itself?

When I saw Thantifaxath last night, I came decked out in the typical battle vest and Candlemass shirt. By contrast, my friend who tagged along decided to just go with some cargo shorts and a goofy Star Wars shirt (not to ounlike how Tomb Mold presented themselves).
That was a choice so based that honestly, *I* started feeling more like the poser.

"The truth is metalheads care deeply about fashion."
I really wish this wasn't the case, but it's true. As you pointed out, this is a "controversy" in the metal community. I personally choose to ignore fashion in metal.
I remember a comment on a Rageaholic video I saw a while back (don't worry. I only go their for his Metal and Music Mythos series and to be entertained by idiocy. I disagree with him on almost everything except for his musical opinions). The comment talked about how the commentor liked being an "undercover metalhead" because they could look completely normal and then see the surprised look on the face of a guy with long hair and leather jacket when the commentor talks about their taste in music.
Bottom line, fuck fashion. Listen to what you like.

Since clothing is mandatory outside, I use basic metal fashion as an expression of my identity (both gender and in general). I feel more confident when I'm wearing a metal shirt and jeans + cargo + studded bracelets in the summer than I do being limited to presenting hoodies in the winter (hoodies are much more expensive). Hell, I've used the contrast of pastel goth aesthetics with metal fashion to represent myself as a non-binary person.
Metal has an iconic "look", but ultimately, metal is a music genre, not a fashion genre. You can be into metal and love metal fashion, as I do to an extent, but at the end of the day, anyone telling you that you can't be a metalhead because of fashion is a bullshit gatekeeper that needs to be yeeted into the sun. The only requirement there should ever be to being a metalhead is liking metal music!
Oh, and one more thing, this is why I hate the whole trope of "Name three songs" whenever a woman is wearing a Metallica shirt or some shit. Why should we give a shit if someone likes the fashion but not the music? It doesn't effect us, and it makes the bands money, so maybe we should get off our high horse and let people enjoy whatever the fuck?

Disagree. If metal is about whatever you want it to be, then what does it stand for? What is the true purpose of metal? How does it stand out from other genres of music? I understand that metal can mean different things to different people, however, there has to be some form of collective interpretation for metal. Of course, such views are subjective but that doesn’t mean that some views aren’t more accurate than others. Otherwise, metal would have no distinction from other categories of art and entertainment and frankly, metal wouldn’t be metal.

Thanks for making this video. I’ve never bought any metal merch or anything. I don’t even live in a state with any real metal scene - just country and hip hop (which is fine of course, I love hip hop music) but finding people who like metal stuff is a rarity around here. I get your point but I don't see why it matters. If someone likes the print because it just looks cool or they like the colours then who really cares? For example, I don't like football (the round one you kick with your feet) but I collect old shirts because they look cool, to me at least. I've gotten so much shit for wearing an old Germany top from the early 90's because I like the colours. It looks metal. I don't like football, don't care about it. I've almost gotten into fights with weirdos talking shit to me.

I’m 43 now and still love listening to metal and going to gigs. I also enjoy other types of music. I used to wear alot of band T-shirts, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve grown out of it. You don’t need to wear band T-shirts, wear all black etc to be a fan of metal music. I personally like to wear jeans, jogging bottoms, vans/Nike/addidas clothing and plain T-shirts/hoodies etc. I also like smart wear too. Dress how you feel comfortable and don’t feel pressured to fit into a particular box. I listen to everything from Metallica to Dying Fetus. From Opeth to Steven Wilson, Ghost to Korn and Carpenter Brut to Zeal and Ardor.

And now as of a couple years ago he's had a haircut and went dad mode. Less terrifying on stage (although he looks a bit like Ed Kemper now lol) but still is one of the most true musicians to come out of the really brutal side of brutal death metal

I enjoy the metal look a lot, and getting into it myself has been really fun, and it's nice to "belong" in that sense. When you're out in the world and two people see each other, and you just know, and have that silent acknowledgement. Great feeling.
That being said, while I think it's a fun sort of stereotype, it is ultimately still a stereotype, and not truly that important, and nobody has to adhere to it. People do take it too seriously. I'd never judge anyone else based on it. Just casual enjoyment.

This is one of those things that people PRETEND is a thing, but isn't actually a thing. Kinda like how when covid started, people online were losing their minds talking about how toilet paper didn't exist anywhere, but every store I ever went to was just as full up as ever of the stuff. It's only an issue or a big deal to internet nerds. Not to anybody in real life.
In fact, the only sort of interaction I've ever had with people regarding "metal clothing" in real life was people I didn't care to speak to, trying to talk to me, and just making me embarrassed for them. I was at a bar a few months ago and some bud light drinkin' mushroom cut zoomer in a pink shirt and flip flops was like "oh, you like metal bro? Yeah this song is for you bro, I knooowww you'll like this one" and changes the music to some emo crap. He was absolutely astounded that I don't listen to "Every Time I Die". This repeated a few more times with other whiny core stuff and I kept telling him I don't listen to that kind of music. I'm wearing boots, Pathologist shorts, an Embalmer t-shirt, a vest with a big Hell Awaits backpatch, and a Destroyer 666 cap. I'm fat-ripped with a big santaclaus beard drinking Jameson straight. What about any of that screams that my favorite band is "crabcore" or that I listen to twinkcore at all? He asked what I DO like and I tried listing some of the most popular bands I could think of. Immolation, Cannibal Corpse, Burzum, Slayer... He was just stunned. Hadn't even heard of'em. I proceed with "Metallica? Motorhead? Iron Maiden? Black Sabbath?" Just to try seeing if the lights were on at all in there, and he goes "oh yeah I've heard of Iron Maiden". Needless to say, the interaction ended with me moving to the other side of the bar and pulling out a book when he was in the middle of trying to say something.
I don't go out of my way to care what others wear and do but it sure as fuck bothers me when people do it to me.

Metal is just music. Something you blast into your ears and listen to. That's all music is. Why do I need to LOOK a certain way? It's weird to me, personally. Like you're expected to wear your 'metal uniform' if you listen to metal. Nah, I dress how the f*ck I please. And THIS is the proper metal attitude. F*ck you, f*ck what you think, I will dress and behave as I want. Despite not even looking like a typical metalhead, my mindset is far more 'metal' than most metalheads who do everything in their power to 'look the part'. Ironic.

Hot Topic is such a legit place to buy metal/metal adjacent stuff for kids the bad rap it gets is fuckin ridiculous. As a grown man I’ll say with my whole chest hot topic still has dope shirts idc and I’ll physically fight you if you do.
I listen to some vile stuff and will gladly put on some pop music or leave the house in a Melanie Martinez shirt does that make the brutal stuff I like less brutal?….No! Metal heads can truly be the most pretentious douchebags ever.

Goofy ass controversy. Just let people wear what they want. The hot topic thing as well is also goofy. I have gotten 80% of my CC shirts from hot topic recently. And one from a show. Show support for the artists however way you want. Streaming or buying, who gives a fuck.

If people are saying Tomb Mold are not metal because of the way they look, then they are not listening to the music. The music is what matters most, not the "uniform" they wear. They can be cos playing as Sesame street characters and it wouldn't matter because the music would be just as heavy and kick just as much ass. Just sayin'.

I watch Justin Horval's channel a lot and it would be interesting to get his take on this.
His point is that bands have to 'look the part'. Yet... he's calling out 'posers' all the time.
I think there's definitely a contradiction there, it should be the music that matters, not the dresscode.

I will say this and I will stfu cuz other than this one particular instance, I dont care. What I like about metal bands and bands under that blanket term is the fact that they wear what they want. I love that. Its them. Its how they wanna present themselves. Awesome. Ive never been swayed from listening to/liking a band cuz they don't fit the mold or whatever. Thats just dumb. HOWEVER. I was a huge linkin park fan since 2000.... then in 2007 they drastically changed cuz of their producer or whatever and they were like styled rather than having their own style if that makes sense. Kinda turned me off when they started wearing skinny jeans and fedoras. Dont misunderstand me, I dont care WHAT it is... its when you start wearing what you're being told to wear thats just not you then it just gives me the ick. Alright everyone now you can start giving me hate. 😣

Fu.58ck all that we don't want posers who only listen to mainstream and nu metal . We peaceful in all but we don't wanna associat with fake metal fans
