52:29 "Why did Professor Utonium make the Powerpuff Girls?" Canonically, he wanted to be a dad because he was depressed and thought it would make him feel better. I'm not even kidding, that's canon, it's in the movie. And it's wild to me bc I've dealt with depression and never thought, "you know what'd make me feel better? Being a single father of three!" If anything I'd assume that would make the depression worse, honestly.
My dad and some other parents find meaning in being a parent. It's not for everyone but it's common for people to create purpose in doing whatever they want to do.
i mean they are made of sugar, spice and everything nice canonically, so they've gotta be some pretty alright kids (to be fair, i've never seen the powerpuff girls so maybe they're little menaces)
And dont forget he was trying to create the perfect little girls. Which is a bit creepy... and accidentally added in chemical X. Which made them powerful. They were meant to be normal girls.
It's interesting to watch people speculate about The Powerpuff Girls under the assumption that they were created to be superheroes when the intro to every episode of the original series explained that the addition of Chemical X in their creation was an accident.
the bit about the bees reminds me of a past neighbor of mine who threw a fit that 'my birds' were stealing the nesting material that she put out for 'her birds'. ALL BIRDS INVOLVED WERE FULLY WILD ANIMALS. She wanted the nesting material to be solely for the birds that come to her bird feeder, and she was mad because she saw some birds hop over from my yard to take some. Nevermind that the birds that hang out in my yard also ate at her feeders, because they are birds and they have no concept of property
Hey can you talk to your birds? I invited them over, set up some feeders and everything, but they haven't shown up yet and it's feeling really rude. Can you get an ETA from them at least?
people like to strip away the humanity of anybody who’s convicted of a crime, it’s refreshing to hear these two talk about their clients as the multifaceted human beings that they are. we are all a product of our surroundings. the horror is often not in the crime being committed, but in the system that forces the hand.
Genuinely broke me down into tears just to hear her talk about how it's actually someone's life in their hands, and most people in the system do not care. We're still fighting for our lives in court, and ended up having to represent ourselves (and won those parts that way) solely because any time a lawyer was involved they just did not care and we lost so much because of them... I'm glad there's people like her out there, even though I know it's incredibly draining to exist that way
exactly! criminals are people too, the road to a healthy society lies in addressing the actual systemic issues instead of just punishing people mindlessly.
I'm a criminal courtroom clerk and I have to say that it is a relief to hear that there are attorneys out there that share this perspective and are willing to call out how crappy the justice system is. I appreciate the venting.
You might really like the works of Dean Spade! I read one of his articles for an intro queer studies class (he’s trans, lmao. And did other stuff for specifically the trans side of things) but wow that paper on crime and the prison system really defined/cemented a lot of how I see the faults of the system
37:25 Omg Olay has such a great point here, because think about what cops look like when they want to look menacing? Clean cut, sharp, precise. And when they want to look friendly? Bumbling dumbasses. Crazy
Listening to Olay and Lolo talk about being public defenders was so cathartic. I worked in care facilities for people with disabilities and had such a similar experience of having everyone wasting your time, writing clients off, and being hostile in the worst ways.
The powerpuff episode with the mime was pretty fucked up in retrospect where they manage to stop the villain using crayons and song instead of fighting, and he thanks them for breaking his curse, and then they beat the shit out of him and throw him in prison anyway. Total cop behavior.
Yeah but still a funny subversion of expectations. I understand it’d be messed up if real, but it’s a funny bit. Still also the first scene my mind went to when thinking of the powerpuff girls and copaganda lol
not to trauma dump in your comment section, but i spent all of last night on my school's campus as LAPD threw flash bombs for hours. watching this video today was probably the first time all day my mind was completely able to think about something else. always love your videos. thanks so so much for what you guys do.

I can't wait for Olayemi's Powerpuff Copaganda video. That section was so funny. I've been replaying it and sending it to all my Cartoon Network friends

I love the chuckle/sound of sympathy Olay makes at 3:52 when Jordan says he's a worse son because he doesn't even know where his dad is. It's one of those moments of, "am I allowed to laugh at that?"
Gonna have to revoke Jordan’s Brit card for thinking that Dev Patel’s acting debut was Slumdog Millionaire, when England’s crowning (pun intended) achievement, Skins, existed.
The best thing about having an andriod is that you never have to deal with the green messages bc on your phone. All texts are the same color regardless of who sent it. Honestly, i only switched bc I really wanted the cool flip phone. Totally worth it

i binged all of lolo & olay's new podcast recently and cannot recommend it enough to my fellow sad boyz listeners!!!! esp if you enjoy legal and political commentary
Olay needs to collab with Skip Intro and do a full on copaganda episode about powerpuff girls... and could move onto scooby doo, spiderman, batman, allllll of those 😂

This isn't relevant to the episode, but I had a dream about Sad Boyz Friday morning and I wanted to share it. So it was actually 2 dreams. In the 2nd dream, I was aware of the first dream, and thought I was now in real life. The first dream was about a brand new Mario Kart coming out. But then it somehow turned into a special episode of Sad Boyz. For whatever reason, Jordan was going by "Dom." "I'm Jarvis" "And I'm Dom." In the 2nd dream, I actually met Jarvis in person. He was just walking around in my neighborhood, and recording another special episode on his phone. Taking selfies is one of his hobbies, so I'm not surprised. He was basically just joking and saying random stuff while walking around. Jordan (Dom) wasn't there, but I can confirm that he was still called Dom in this dream, and I still thought it was weird. I don't think Jarvis was gonna upload this special phone episode. Then I told him about my dream-- how it was Mario Kart and then turned into Sad Boyz, and he thought it was funny. That's basically all that there is to it, aside from loads of small details. I can't believe this explanation is so long, because it's a very simple premise.
I once had a dream that Jordan and I were best friends and we went to university together for dentistry, and then there was a time-skip and us and a bunch of our dentistry student friends went out in the middle of the night looking for people to practice dentistry on. Like...we were freelance dentists? Taking people's teeth in the night? Fixing people's teeth in the night? I have no idea. But I suddenly had this terrible feeling that Jordan had been kidnapped by a local dentist. And then I woke up.
Ok, the airheads thing is important to me for no reason, but it really bothered me. Shaking them DOES NOT change the flavor at all. The "mystery flavor" is just a combination of leftover flavors that haven't had the dye added yet. That's what makes them taste different. Shaking it into a smaller little pod is definitely a more fun thing to do, and I did it a lot as a kid, but it's definitely not the "intended way" to eat it. I don't know why it bothered me so much, but I just really felt like I had to say something.
I swear that I started listening, and it was called "Powerpuff girls are the cops" or something like that. I know that you change the names of the episodes to track different engagements, but it really threw me off when I looked back at my phone. Anyway, another great one as always!!
1:11:26 i think a more appropriate mock comparison would be can i sue my be like "If my little brother routinely plays with toys i grew out of that realistically only he would take enjoyment from can I sue my parents for letting him (a baby) use my old toys?" cause that guys never gonna be able to collect the pollen and then make the honey without the bees, and its not the neighbours fault that they planted flowers that the bees are using. and even if they remove the flowers (like hiding the toys) the bees will pollenate other flowers (and the baby can hopefully be provided his own toys). its obviously not a perfect analogy but i think it works well to point out the kind of ridiculousness of the goal.
i love love the new little Boston dynamics robot! robots are not humans so they don't have to move around like this, I think the way it's able to pick itself up is so cool i love him he's so adorable 😭

I think Jarvis was correct regarding airheads mystery flavor; this is the "in between" flavors when the machinery used to make it is transitioning from one flavor to the next. "Mystery" here is just genius marketing of previously discarded purge product. Changing the shape of the airhead didn't change the flavor - that changes from batch to batch on its own.
That's SO CRAZY! I just saw her on the So Shameless podcast last week. Was not expecting these 2 shows to have overlap. She legit leaves that show to catch a flight to La. Amazing
around 1:22:30 when y’all talk about grief related to interacting with barriers in the criminal justice system, i think you might enjoy ambiguous loss theory by pauline boss. type two of the loss i think very well describes the sensation and feelings you guys were describing and is really relevant from the systems perspective of things. her actual research papers have the best info tbh.

around 1:22:30 when y’all talk about grief related to interacting with barriers in the criminal justice system, i think you might enjoy ambiguous loss theory by pauline boss. type two of the loss i think very well describes the sensation and feelings you guys were describing and is really relevant from the systems perspective of things. her actual research papers have the best info tbh.
dream collab also
the nightz came out before the regular video and olay isn't in it so i got jumpscared a little bit when i opened this by 100% more lawyers than i thought there was going to be

This Episode Is My Favorite Out Of The Whole Podcast Still, Hope To See Them On The Pod Again In The Future
43:39 I get his point but this talking point for Batman is quite literally a basic misunderstanding of his character 😭
Probably one of my least favourite sad boyz episodes for that exact reason, but no one seems to talk about it.
