Growing up American you wouldn't even catch wind of something like this. Being older and having access to the internet and exploring foreign cuisine is the best thing I've ever done growing up. Something so simple but tastes so delicious. Love the video and recipe
@@akdlg9sjjslk8 Good for you. But not all of America is the same. I had never even had sushi until I was in my 20s and hadn't had "real" (as in non instant) ramen until in my 30s. I have been on a basically low, practically non-existent budget all of my life, so unless someone is kind enough to treat me to a restaurant or ingredients so I can make something at home, I don't get to eat it.
@@akdlg9sjjslk8 I can also understand not having many opportunities to explore other foods much growing up, even with so much available around you. You're kind of stuck with what your parents ultimately feel comfortable eating until becoming an adult to explore on your own! I live in an area with a lot of Japanese restaurants and a few Japanese grocery stores mainly because of Japanese international businesses having offices here, and if it wasn't for the internet and being a weeb, I probably wouldn't know onigiri still, pokemon would have successfully lead me to think it's a jelly donut! I grew up with instant ramen though, I am surprised how many people didn't, since it's a very affordable food and I guess it was just a result of my family struggling with money much of my childhood.
My father was stationed in Japan when I was a kid. On field trips my mother would make rice balls for me. Fond memories. My friends who tried it loved them.
@@asakusa-tokyokitchen I don't eat animal products for health and environmental reasons, so I blended chickpeas with a bit of wakame instead. I was delicious, thank you!
I just got back from Japan and was addicted to these!! You can find them at any convenience store and they're only around $1.50 USD depending on filling. My favorite was salmon, with wasabi and soy. Delicious!!!!
Thank you lovely lady. I’m from England, used to live and work in Tokyo many years ago. On my lunch break I always went to the convenient store to get Onigiri. I miss Japan so much.
The texture of the cold rice with the soft fatty mayo covered tuna hitting your mouth, plus the seaweed to bring it all together as you chew... all I gotta say is yum
Since watching this video, I've been making tuna mayo onigiri about 2-3 times a week now, and I just started adding the okaka ones in for variety. Thank you for the great recipes!
Thank you for bringing simple Japanese cooking to us Westerners! I've fallen in love with Japanese food, especially things like Mochi, Miso soup, Udon, Unagi Don, and all sorts of Maki and Nigiri. I've been wanting to try onigiri for quite some time now, and have tried Inari (the one where the Inari is a pouch and it's filled with the rice) and tamagoyaki nigiri....loved them both. So I've been looking at recipes, even buying some of the hard-to-get ingredients online. I've tried Agedashi Tofu, and I think I have the broth-sauce down but the frying is escaping my understanding. I cut them right, and I powder it on potato starch (also tried corn starch, as well as a mix of things) and it comes out crispy, but not the same outside texture as the ones I get at restaurants. The coating turns clear, and seems more plastic-like. Maybe I got a counterfeit potato starch??? Any ideas?
I am American and brown but even I didn’t have a variety of different cuisines available because my parents had no clue of anything beyond the usual “American” food, Chinese take out and brown food (like Indian, Pakistani, etc.) I only seen Onigiri in anime such as Pokémon. I think that was the first time I ever seen it and always wanted to try it. I had no idea it was this simple to make. I was surprised that I even knew it was real food even though I had no idea how Japanese food was and since I was so small I didn’t even know Pokémon was originally Japanese, I just knew that Ash and his crew was enjoying this snack and wanted to try it! Years later I became an adult and went to a Japanese bookshop in the city that that a cafe which sold onigiri and I was so excited that the Japanese person behind me was smiling ear to ear and explaining to me that the food was authentic there. They were also very cheap. I loved it so much that I came here for the recipe!
I would like to commend you for shaping it so perfectly😔 I tried making this just a while ago, and I had a really hard time shaping it into a triangle😂
my husband was stationed in Japan and he's been craving Japanese food so I'm trying to learn how to cook some of it for him. Thank you for your channel 🙏 😊
this recipe saved my night. my mom suggested i make sushi and i prepared everything for a spicy tuna roll only to find out we have absolutely no vegetables.
Thanks for the recipe! Arigato! First time I ate onigiri in Osaka from 7eleven. they were so good. cost like $1 each. also there coffee is really good for cheap.
Thank you so much!! It's my first try and it was a big success!! My sons were so impressed hahaha so happy that I can eat tuna mayo onigiri as much as I want now

In Canada, these small sheets of Nori meant for snacks are starting to get popular, and I use them to pick up rice mixed with sesame oil, vinegar and some kinda sauce.. soy teriyaki ponzu.. I'm looking for recipe ideas like this one to get creative with. I was lazy and cheap and tried canned salmon and it's wasn't bad. The rice forming technique, and wrapping is a great idea. It's been my favorite lunch combo for months now , sometimes for breakfast
Hi from the philipines thank you so much for teaching me how to make it I'm still 11 years old I can't bealive it it was so simple that my whole famy liked and thank you again :)
Thank you so much for sharing! I made some of the onigiri for me and my family and they said it was good! Of course I couldn’t make perfect triangles like yours, mines had a bit of a soft top to it. Thank you, again! 🍙💞💓💖💟
Just made these and wow kewpie mayo is so good! I hope everyone chooses to make it with that versus non-Japanese mayo bc it’s great. The forming takes a bit of practice but they are so yummy
@@asakusa-tokyokitchen I succeed the 90% of it!! I guess my rice was too hot and my seaweeds were too small to make onigiris. However, your recipe was very delicious and I made micro-miniature rolls! I made giant portion of rice and tuna so I think I'll try making another rolls that are more similar to your onigiris tomorrow morning! Thank you for the video!
Looks yummy! I usually put the rice all in a plastic sandwich baggie to shape it. Then I don't have to get my hands so sticky. I usually use pork sung as filling. I'll try tuna next time.
