Gimbap is a delicious Korean seaweed and rice roll that's perfect for picnics and potlucks. It's sometimes called "Korean sushi", but the rice isn't prepared with vinegar like Japanese sushi, it's made with sesame oil.

I am 75y/o, getting ready to make my first sushi rolls - and was so happy to discover kimbap/gimbap and not have to risk my remaining life trying to do raw tuna and salmon!
Maangchi, you are beautiful and fun to learn from.

I think what I like most is how you include the little details like how to roll the gimbap using that tool. It may seem obvious or easy to some people, but for people who've never tried it, it's very good to learn visually on how to roll it. Thank you

Hi, Chinese here. I learnt how to make traditional kimchi from you couple months ago. Now I’m here to learn to make gimbap. I still remember when I first ate gimbap, I said it was sushi, my Korean housemates’ faces were not so good, they corrected me. That was embarrassing. This is a really good video to show people the difference between gimbap and sushi. I like it.

Maangchi….. I have watched this for many years and had it as a goal….. Finally tonight I gather all the ingredients and used woven map I bought @ 5 years ago. I even made the pickled daikon from our garden ( made with turmeric for the color😁) I used ground venison from my husband and sons hunting, eggs from our family chickens, dinosaur kale, carrots from the garden. Other than the soy sauce ,sesame oil, rice and nori, I was able to adapt as you have always encouraged your viewers. It is so delicious!!!! I aIso included a little line of red pickle beet relish ..well drained for more color. So now I have my lunch all rolled up in parchment paper and foil for the week. I think each time I make , I will get better at rolling. Love all your wonderful recipes, your humor and creativity🌈👍. Recently loved seeing you cook in the desert🌄Thanks as always….

My interest in gimbap grew with "Extraordinary Attorney". Using sesame oil rather than rice vinegar on the rice makes rolls distinctly Korean. I'm now long acquainted with using sesame oil and garlic for delicious side dishes. Everything works with Gimbap! I intentional save small leftover dishes for inclusion. No recipe needed beyond the gim and the bap preparation. Endless combinations.

Dear Maangchi, I have a wife, 7 daughters and a son. We eat American and Mexican food. Both are not too healthy. We are now switching to Korean and Japanese food as our primary food cooking style. I am going to H-Mart in San Jose CA tomorrow and spending $500 on ingredients, cookware etc.. I will make the trip to H-Mart once per month to buy meats, kimchee and other Korean goods as we need them. Korean is my #1 favorite food! :) I am going to Vlog it all and post the video! I can't wait!

    • @213yasy

Mexican food can be healthy as well. I grew up eating Mexican and Guatemalan food. Both were full of many veggies!

    • @jessicah3450
      @jessicah3450 5 років тому +33

American and Mexican food can be healthy, look more into Southwest cuisine which is full of vegetables and lean meats. Not so much the stuff that they often serve in restaurants that is coated in cheese.
But enjoy the cooking adventure! I recently got into making Korean and Chinese food at home. I wish we had an H-Mart nearby, but we have one called the 99 Ranch Market which is also great. I had the basic kitchenware to substitute to get started. I do want a new wok and a bigger steamer someday. Have fun 🙂

You can also make a bunch of kimchi at home instead of always buying it pre made! In the end it’s cheaper and you can make it together with your family as bonding time~

As someone who have tried all of it, I think healthiness depends on the dish. Some Chinese dishes involve a lot of soy sauce and sugar, which isn't good health wise, but it's tasty. The Japanese have a lot of sea food dishes. They are great, but sea food isn't recommended too often health wise. You just have to find the right nutritional balance between all the dishes. Good luck.

I thought that I would NEVER eat eel. But, I have to tell you the "Eel Kimbap" was so DELICIOUS. Maangchi's Kimbap is just as delicious. I'm so elated that she teaches us how to make it properly. Thank you Maangchi. I just made my first kimbap. Watched many recipe videos and Korean grocery shopping videos before making kimbap. Great results. I will use leftovers for bibimbap.

@@Maangchi Hi, I've made this and it's delicious! Btw is it okay if I pre-made the beef, carrot, spinach (or any green veggie) the night before? Would it change the taste?
I want to make lunch box in the morning before work and preparing all the ingredients is taking some time. Thanks :)

Dear Maangchi, I discovered your channel a couple of months ago and I have been hooked since. Your presentation and commentary is so relatable and adorable. Thanks for sharing all the goodness of Korean Food with the rest of the world! I am writing to you from Accra, Ghana ( West Africa ). I had the good fortune to visit a Korean-Japanese restaurant recently and got to try bulgogi kimbap. It was so flavourful. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I also tried kimchi Jeon, it was absolutely great. I understand now why Koreans love Kimchi!!! I will definitely try my hands at making them at home. Keep the recipes and videos coming. PS: What side dishes would you recommend to have with kimbap?

We eat kimbap with soda, or kimchi, or tteokbokki(stir-fried rice cake).. every food is good with gimbap :) I really like gimbap with tteokbokki sauce. Its spicy but so nice!
