  • Onigiri, probably one of the most iconic Japanese foods that you’ve most likely seen if you’ve ever watched anime. Steamed rice shaped into a triangle (or a ball), filled with some sort of delicious filling, all wrapped in dried seaweed. It’s a healthy and well-balanced meal that’s easy to make and perfect for picnics, bentos, and on-the-go. You’ll see it literally at EVERY convenient store in Japan, and tons of variety too. If you’ve ever visited a Japanese “combini” then you know what I’m talking about.
In this video, I go over how to prep, make, and serve three different types of onigiri using traditional but easy to get ingredients: salmon, tunamayo (tuna and mayo mix), and umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum).
Once you learn the simple onigiri recipes in this video you’ll be able to easily modify it to your own preference and start getting creative with it! Enjoy!

    🍣 ABOUT THE SUSHI MAN:
    Jun Nakajima, CHEF AND FOUNDER
Raised in a restaurant household, Jun's love for food began at a very early age. His parents have owned and operated a Japanese restaurant for over 30 years where he practiced and honed his culinary skills.
Somewhat forced upon, he was taught the art of sushi making in his teenage years. He quickly fell in love not only with the art but the endless opportunities that came with it.
He has traveled around the globe to try different styles of sushi, most importantly to Japan.
After college, Jun had taken an opportunity to live in the motherland of sushi, working for something completely outside the culinary field. In those two years his appreciation of the culture, people, history and food deepened.
He became addicted to the food scene and found himself traveling from one end of the island to the other, eating and drinking some of the best foods and drinks he's ever had. This experience became the seed which eventually bloomed to become The Sushi Man.

I totally agree. That was extremely informative. I no know either what to shop for or make my own. And the information regarding a omitting Mold pleases me also. One thing however i don’t like salmon. Can I use fillings to make it vegan? For example mashed cooked sweet potato or finely grated carrot. Please let me know if anyone have any other ideas.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Braised shiitake mushrooms can be a great vegetarian option. Also takuwan (pickled daikon radish), shio kombu (salt seasoned kelp), or some miso and diced green onion is a great option as well. You can also look for some "nori no tsukudani" which is basically marinated seaweed. Hope that helps!

I just form them with my hands, you get your hands nice and wet, and add a bit of salt and rub it in, and then just lay out the rice on your hand, then put your filling in the middle, close it up with both hands, and then press making a triangle shape with both hands while rotating the ball. This way you aren't destroying the enviroment with so much plastic wrap.

Usually you put salt in the rice pot in the beginning when your cooking rice so it’s all even or you add sugar.

As I understand it the salt is more to keep the rice from sticking.

Interesting... Not sure what's going on with that either, we used to be able to pick when to put ads on videos but UA-cam controls all of that now. Maybe they're testing things.
