the octaves plus the 10/16 time signature surely confuses the performer...
Confuses the sightreader, not the performer.

is this just me or there's chopin's influence?
Butterfly etude
Chopin and Alkan were close friends so it's definitely possible that either Alkan or Chopin composed the original, and the other one made his own version on it
That's an awful time signature but I'd bet afterwards octaves would never be a problem
