Margie and Jaeger to the busy Animas River trail with skateboards, bikes, rollerskates, dogs, etc. They both do really well. Margie normally would've taken off for the hills at this point.. I want the owners to both notice that these dogs are not being "held back" there was no tension on the leash. The leash is actually dragging. If you tie a dog up or hold taught, and they get nervous and pull, then if/when that pressure is released, it sometimes makes take off - like a boomerang. So tension is never helpful in any situation. But specifically, ike I said, when a dog is nervous, and if tension is relieved by them chewing, or breaking the tether or the human accidentally letys go of thier pulling dog, then the dog will often immediately run - like a spring-back efffect. So, better to get the dog in a decent state of mind where they can actually mentally restrain themselves, or at least listen to your verbal's, like "an OPE". Of course, if you aren't 100% certain do not do this. I am 100% certain with these dogs that even if they did run for 5 feet they will turn around and come back when I recall them. That is an important thing to remember. And when near the road, I will hold the leash. Bottom line, it's about getting them mentally capable of restraining themselves not being physically held-back, even when fearful and nervous. And, at the same time, make sure you're doing things in their life that make them feel confident. These dogs spend a lot of time with me playing, off-leash, hunting in the woods, romping with other dogs, etc. Doing things that they love and make them feel strong and confident. It's a balance of providing that, but also exposing them to this. Overtime that confidence can and will transfer into all aspects of their lives, even when in more public and nerve-wracking situations.

good to watch these! i have fearful rescue at home (we're almost 8 weeks in w/her). she's afraid of a LOT but making progress. biggest hurdle now is backyard where we need her to not be afraid to go and use bathroom. i'm doing 'sitting with dog' back there. slow progress, but she mostly doesn't tremble now when we do it. will do similar things you've done and take her downtown when ohio weather permits! thanks for your videos.
