Thank you for your videos Nigel, they are trully refreshing! Real dogs, with real problems that we all struggle with. I particulaly love how you remind us it can take 30+ repeats, or x number of weeks, or whatever the case may be. Please continue to do this in your future videos. It reminds us to keep going in baby steps, to have realistic expectations, and to trust in the process.
Having watched numerous videos trying to get help with the heel command and pulling, this guy is the best. He tells you the what and why in comprehensive terms, with plenty of visual demonstrations. He doesn't love his own voice and waffle on like another English dog trainer. Thank you Sir.
Thank you for this advice. i am going to try it out tomorrow with my 2 year old GSD whose recall is brilliant when we are on our own, but completely deaf to me when near rabbit holes.
This video did help me a lot. I am in charge of a 2 1/2 y.o. pit bull most days and cannot go to many parks with him so I cannot socialize him the way I'd like. I've been watching videos on training that seem to be encouraging. Thank you.
Great video, I found what I was looking for. Also, it's the first video I pressed the Like button after being asked. It's because he asked in the end of the video, not at the beginning as so many others. And he truly humbly asked. No one does it.
Amazing, incredible videos. Such understanding of canine mentality. If only this were main stream television for all dog owners to watch rather than dragging their poor pooch around or shouting their heads off, which presumably they do to their children. Well done and thankyou, by the way im fortunate enough to have two beautifully behaved dogs.
Wow I have a new puppy and I've watched a few other channels. So far this channel has made the most sense. There was one channel where the man kept saying what he thought the dog was thinking and I was like 😳. That isn't going to help me one bit even if what he says is true. Not all Dogs think alike. My puppy is the complete opposite of my other Dog that passed away. Wow I miss him so much. This puppy is roudy and I've only had him since July 21, 2020. My other boy was born in 2000. What is so neat about it is that when the first boy turned one then the year was 2001. My pup will be one in 2021! So even if I go senile... You get it! Lol.
I really found this video useful. So good to see an untrained dog steadily improving rather than how an already trained dog responds! Patience, calmness, consistency - repeat, repeat, repeat! Looking forward to applying to our 9 month head-strong Golden Retriever :-)
Wow! Your training method is much much better than Zac that it deserves way higher subscription than this, like millions. Love it! Thank you for good realistic content.
Thank you very much for this video, Nigel. We are still on stage one (getting better every day) and I can't wait to progress. You break down everything in steps that are easy to understand.
This is going to help my black lab Loki a great deal. In my efforts to socialise him, I've inadvertently made him assume EVERY dog he sees is there to play with him... Without distractions his recall is ok, but when other dogs are present he's away if not on the lead. Your video on protective behaviour was instrumental in calming his barking out the window quickly and easily, so I'll definitely be following the teachings in this video as well. Thank you.
Getting a puppy tomorrow and I cant thank you enough for making these types of detailed videos with a pup that isn't already trained. Seeing the process really helps my confidence as well as willingness to continue with the method!
I’m a socialiser for an assistance dog charity & I like your training methods & the videos you make. It’s important that we prepare the puppies with all the basic commands before they go off for their advance training to be a life changer at around 14 months old. I like to watch your training & then go to practice, it’s a fantastic help. Thank you.
Thank you! even though my puppy is only 4 weeks old and I still need to wait another 4 for him to come home, this is amazing advise! by that time I will be rewatching!
My husband is not very steady on his feet & uses a cane. He likes to walk the dog, but I'm trying to make sure the small, but strong, dog does not pull him over. Your video about the out-of-control shepherd amazed me. i tried walking our dog in the house, as you suggested. He's treat motivated! Overnight, he got what I wanted him to do. I will continue to work with him, but he is already doing much better. Thank you SO much!
This is really helpful thankyou. I decided to address some issues im having with my dog reggie and after watching one of your other vids on insta I put the effort in this morn. He was so much more responsive and I realised I havent been praising him enough. Just a quiet walk before the park really helped me get his recall better, and I felt he trusted me a bit better as the leader. Thankyou for these videos it really helps me become a better owner
After reading several comments I wanted to let people know that learning these techniques could save the life of someone's Dog one day bc my dad never learned how to train any Dog. He used to drop kick his very tiny Dog that looked like a shitzu but much smaller and almost all black. My whole life my Dad was cruel to animals and little people. He never cared to learn how to train anything or anyone. So I've said all that to say once you've learned this then help others. Even if you don't have a Dog or child. ( Yes this works with them as well!) Only with Dogs you don't have to be verbal. Children need to be verbal in a gentle loving manner. Which me and my brother never got. I often teased my brother before he was 14. I'd call him like most people call aDog. Because his name was Butch. But at 14 he also took on the attacking character of the Dog and that was the end of THAT!
Well, all I can say is, lucky you for having a large enclosed area where you can practice alone and with other dog owners and their dogs on- or off-lead. Given that precious property, training is easy-peasy. Unfortunately, such spaces are not available to 99% of us.
Rrally...a yard, a park. I mean there everywhere. You can do this in your house if u want. U don't need other dogs u can add other humans as distraction. U can use distractions during walks . Most towns and cities have dog parks. At the end of the day the bulk of training is done without distractions as they are almost always added in later.
The enclosed area was just a part of the process, however I could have done it all on lead. You even saw me resort to putting the dog back on a long lead when the dog didn't come back. You have to use some initiative and adapt it to your situation.
I found your video yesterday and tried it with my young rescue hound we just got a few days ago. She is doing great using this method already. I'm not sure if I have patience for 32 tries out the door, but I'll work on it. Thanks.
Thank you for your videos. They do help me. I have a rescue dog Beau, I rescued him at 8 months and he is now 14 months. He wasn't socialised as a young puppy and I have had to train him from scratch. Pulling on lead is a problem, he reacts when he sees all other dogs and wants to sniff a lot to calm himself and recall is a work in progress. Inside my home he is listening more. When I first rescued him he was mega hyper and out of control and I had to teach him to be calmer.
I have bought your book now and am about half way through it. It really makes sense to me, so thank you so much. I really want to be the best dog guardian I can possibly be for Beau and I am very determined that he will look to me to fulfill all his needs and they will all be met. I am getting there, I think, but he had so many behavioural issues when I re-homed him that fixing them takes time. His over-excitement when he sees other dogs, cats and even squirrels is getting better as I stay calm and reassure him with my body language and demeanor that there's nothing to worry about and I am using your heel technique from your video. And he barks at home when he hears an unfamiliar noise outside but I say thank and go check it out and that really works. I bought your book for a friend also.
This lesson makes so much sense and I am going to begin this with Emma right away. My other dogs were well trained to return immediately, but were food oriented so it was easy to teach them to come when called. I believe Emma will be happy to learn with praise as a reward. I never intend to have her off leash but one time her harness broke and she needs to come when called for her safety. Thank you !
Absolutely fantastic video. I can see this is a long term project, requiring consistency and patience, but at each stage, you're giving the dog every chance to succeed. And of course i the mean time, having a ball training. You're my new dog-whisperer!
Nigel is such a brilliant dog trainer, this is the best training ever when i get the lead ready my dog "cockapoo " goes crazy with excitement i have to turn around and have my back towards her until she stops jumping and reaching the height of my head lol, i'm going to start teaching my dog tomorrow the way Nigel showed us *****
Your training techniques are spot on. Very good. It's important to keep viewing these techniques over and over again for the owners it will help you with training your own dog.
Thanks so much for all this information I can't wait to get cracking with all the tricks and skills you have shown in your videos. I've gotten a 13 week old cocker spaniel who's able to start going for walks thos coming weekend and in time I will surely use your methods thanks again Great videos.
i have just rescued 8 month pit mix...he pulls and gets overly excited jumping on random.people..its hard but i will train him one by one just like you told me too!!! thank you
Great Stuff Mr Reed! After years of borrowing our friends' dogs, we're getting our own rescue at the weekend. A 5 yo German Shepherd. You're videos are great training - more for us than for the dog..
Thank you for this. It is refreshing to be shown how to teach our dogs to play off leash in parks and something I have been struggling to teach my labs. I now have to put the time in at home until lockdown is over and we can return to the parks to start part 2!
Feeling confident again after watching this. Have tried many times to train my beloved cavoodle but failed. Now i am ready to start again and follow it through..
Thank you for the video. Great guidance on getting to know my dog and working to get her to come. Diligently and continually working with her is the key along with positive rewards.
Man had to run thru so many videos , Mr Reed you are awesome , I am starting to train my 12 week old bullmastiff , he’s a fast learner so I don’t think it should be a stress
This video should be right up there , Mr Reed if you up from video content and better editing I am sure your channel will be amongst the top ones , let me know if I can help , thanks and regards ,Praveen
Thank you for sharing these training tips. I have 2 rescue pointers who definitely have a high prey drive, and they pull the heck out of me on their leads plus have selective deafness with recall at times.... I'm going back to basics and I'm going to binge watch your videos and put what I learn into action, so I can actually enjoy my dog walks rather than coming back home exhausted and in pain!
I’m gonna start teaching this to my dog tomorrow. Hopefully this works! I followed your method on how to teach a dog not to pull on leash during walks and it worked like magic!
Hi Nigel! Please do a video on dog training around livestock. My 1yr 9mnths boerboel barks, chases and lunges at my goats and chickens, but thankfully he has not yet hurt any. I do trust that he can learn if I first learn how to truly lead him, thanks for such a great channel.
O la la, those videos gives my hope. We've a mixed-Border-collie at 2 1/2 years old, he came to us 14 month old and he's not our first dog, but the first one we got problems with. Of course he's marvelous, the best in the world - at home. Yes, we do love him. We didn't know when we bought him, that he grow up outside with 7 to 9, maybe 15 dogs, except from two families he visit very short, they didn't want to keep him. He had no behaviour, was dirty, didn't even listen to "sit". He had a black broken teeth, we must let a veterinar take it away, he's tooth are very strange and sensitive. Well, our problems: he's dragging and barking at dogs he doesn't know we can hardly hold him, he's barking at home, he's watch after me and my husband and, he's very, very strong! (Well, probably was our first dog, a mixed German shepherd, must stronger, but he always followed us from the first day until he died 14 years later.) I learned, my husband and I, must learn to be patient and practice over and over again. Thanks a lot! God bless you!
Your videos answer my question! Thank you!!! I will start training my alpha dog who pulls, steal food, does not listen to me; I almost lost her because she ran off to chase stray dogs. I love her, but I HATE walking her. I will start with stage 1 and work slowly towards off lead. I know it will be a few months of training for my 3 dogs!!
My Border Terrier is actually OK with recall off lead unless he has the scent of something. Other dogs generally he will come back straight away now (he was known to get a bit aggressive with some so we worked on that and its almost never an issue now). However his prey drive kicks in and boom, off he goes, totally oblivious to any kind of recall, and the longest he has been gone in the woods is 20 minutes, at which point I was in a real panic, stressed and upset.
@@nigelreed Old Irish man that lives in Australia . Lived in the outback with wild dogs,... teaches dog psychology. You are clear, he is clear, only his young daughter put him on youtube. He was the original dog whisperer. He wrote a book, the boy who talked to dogs.
This is awesome thank you so much. Our wee shih tzu Charlie needs some work on his recall, after watching your video you have probably saved his life as I have been doing everything wrong, Will start today doing it your way, many thanks
Thanks for your videos Nigel. Will the training still be effective over time even though some days when I’m in a rush I can reinforce it 100%. Thanks again Alex
Thank your for these informative videos. I can see I’ve been lax with rewarding my dog’s recalls recently and will step that up while she is on lead now. We trained our dog to to come when she was a puppy and after the terrible two’s here recall has been pretty good, EXCEPT when there is food or the scent of another animal. When people have picnics and/or leave discarded food in the ground in parks it becomes impossible to get her back even with treats. Likewise the other day she caught the whiff of some critter and I lost her in the brush on the slope of the park for almost 45 mins. She wasn’t responding to treats and I didn’t feel confident leaving her in this type of situation (though I have used the leave tactic when she plays hard to get in the park). I didn’t reprimand her when I got her back. I simply carried her all the way home and put her in her crate when we got there. She seemed to understand but I fear that over the three minute walk home, she’d probably forgotten what this was about. What does a dog owner do in these types of situations please?
Nice video, I already did most of the things showed. I got a pointer from the Pound so, he's an hunter, I use a leash long 20 meters and he respond better after 5 months that I got him, but if he see a butterfly or a bird or every other animal he doesn't listen anymore and if I free him he run really far and he came back just when he wants. Most of the people tell me it's a pointer you can't do much, but I really want have nice walks with my dog and can free him.
Thanks so much for stopping by. If you found this video helpful please like, share and subscribe. I hope to see you on the next video!
Man quarantine is doing weird stuff to my interests. I don’t even have a dog and I’m hooked on watching these videos
I also don't have dog ,Knowing dogs isn't weird
just get one!
@jugy Yes!!
Seeing this on reddit, I was surprised by how much I wanted to gain this knowledge. I also don't have a dog lol
Me too!

i agree with you!!!! your videos are really helpful!! you show real things. thank you!!!!!
I followed this to the letter, all worked great, but my dog now thinks he's called Woody.
lol
If I had been standing...I may have crumpled. Lol that was funny.
🤣🤣🤣 lmao
This has been the absolute best video on training dogs.
Great to hear :)
Great! Also, very cute of the other two dogs to sit for the treat when you rewarded Woody.
:)
very good at last someone who knows how to train a dog
Thanks Brian :)
Note to suspicious people: BTW people Brian is not my dad we just share the last name.
I am actually in tears (of relief!) having found you this morning! THANK YOU!
You are so welcome!
His book is really good too
I out loud said "oh good boy" when he started to listen haha!
Having watched numerous videos trying to get help with the heel command and pulling, this guy is the best.
He tells you the what and why in comprehensive terms, with plenty of visual demonstrations.
He doesn't love his own voice and waffle on like another English dog trainer.
Thank you Sir.
Great to hear Laura. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Thank you for this advice. i am going to try it out tomorrow with my 2 year old GSD whose recall is brilliant when we are on our own, but completely deaf to me when near rabbit holes.
Best of luck!

I was starting to think that Woody was just a bit thick, but you trained him beautifully. Thank you for this helpful video.
Ha, just very stubborn and aloof. Glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you Nigel, putting it into practice today. 😊
Wonderful! Best of luck!!
Best method I've seen. It's just what I was looking for. Thank you for the information Mr. Reed.
Very welcome
Best recall lesson!
Thank you :)

Thanks for sharing!! Best of luck.
You seem to do it so easily! I struggle with my dog being overly aggressive, and pulling me! Come to LA and train her LOL
Hope to come to L.A one day :)
Episode on Guidance on making the dog walk along side you and follow you was very useful
Good to hear.
I’m gonna start teaching this to my dog tomorrow. Hopefully this works! I followed your method on how to teach a dog not to pull on leash during walks and it worked like magic!
Great to hear Amanda. Best of luck :)
How did it go??
real and great + spot on TTFN
Thank you Charlie.
I’ve watched a lot of video’s & these were the most informative. Thank you so much for all the great tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Nigel! Please do a video on dog training around livestock. My 1yr 9mnths boerboel barks, chases and lunges at my goats and chickens, but thankfully he has not yet hurt any. I do trust that he can learn if I first learn how to truly lead him, thanks for such a great channel.
Hope to make that video soon. :)
Awesome Nigel
Thank you Manav :)
Lovely to read what you have done for this dog. Yes be patient and don't expose him to too much or he will panic. Baby steps with everything you do.
Great to hear!!!
Really enjoying these vodeos! Easy to follow and great to see it all in practice. Love Woody, what a champ. 💓
Glad you like them!
Brilliant..
It's clear to me that you have to put in the effort to get the results.
Thanks again
My pleasure
I am thinking about getting a dog and this helps me understand what to do if I get one.
Great to hear.
Very useful! Thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Nigel, you and Martin Mckenna are the best. You may have learned from him? Either way you are great.
Thank you :)
I have never heard of him.
@@nigelreed Old Irish man that lives in Australia . Lived in the outback with wild dogs,... teaches dog psychology. You are clear, he is clear, only his young daughter put him on youtube. He was the original dog whisperer. He wrote a book, the boy who talked to dogs.
Looking to get a dog and preparing to learn , thanks for your vids. Easy to see before and after. And the kind way to train, really important..
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!! This was a fantastic video!!! I have a 3 yr old yellow lab. He’s doing wonderful too!!
Glad it was helpful! :)
I love this
🙏
This is awesome thank you so much. Our wee shih tzu Charlie needs some work on his recall, after watching your video you have probably saved his life as I have been doing everything wrong, Will start today doing it your way, many thanks
Wonderful!
Your videos are so practical. Thank you!
Glad you like them! :)
great advice
GREAT TO HEAR
Excellent.
Thanks.
Where do you get that harness from? Is it any good? Your vids are great by the way. Very informative. 👌
Hi Darren, I'm not sure where the client would have got it but it wasn't. great one.
Good to hear :)
Best wishes,
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for your videos Nigel. Will the training still be effective over time even though some days when I’m in a rush I can reinforce it 100%. Thanks again Alex
Hi Alex,
Pleasure.
Every time you don't reinforce it you'll go backwards in the process i'm afraid.
Outstanding videos. I am so grateful!
Glad you like them!
Hi Deena, you can't do much in that situation bar what you did. Rather it's about setting yourself up to teach her the response each day in stages.
Thank you. I’m carrying treats more vigilantly each day now and working on rebuilding her recall. Cheers.
Wonderful sir
Many many thanks
Nice video, I already did most of the things showed. I got a pointer from the Pound so, he's an hunter, I use a leash long 20 meters and he respond better after 5 months that I got him, but if he see a butterfly or a bird or every other animal he doesn't listen anymore and if I free him he run really far and he came back just when he wants. Most of the people tell me it's a pointer you can't do much, but I really want have nice walks with my dog and can free him.
You can get him to the point he is responsive regardless of his breed :)
