I’ve been lucky enough to meet Philippa on several occasions and in Middleham a few years ago she said “my side of the story WILL be told” and here it is! I’ve not seen the film yet but I know she never gave up, all through the sneers, the dismissive attitudes and the red tape. Philippa, John Ashdown Hill and the Looking For Richard team were meticulous in their research and it was through THEM that Richard was found, no one else. I’ve known what has gone on behind the scenes from different sources and to think that certain authorities can behave in such a way is shocking. Thank you for never giving up and treating the kings remains with dignity and care as he didn’t always get that.
She said he wanted to be found, I really think he was reaching out to her. Bless you Philippa..this misunderstood man is now at peace.

What a wonderful woman!
She overcame the odds. She kept holding onto hope. Not only that, but she treated what should be just a letter and a number as a human, being incredibly respectful to that subject.
So often in archaeology, we see the treatment of fellow "beings" (I'm more so talking about finds such as the burial sights, etc), being treated like it was never a fellow human. And yes, that is a fair way of looking at it. But in reality, that "subject" was once breathing and thinking, crying and laughing.
So, good on this woman, who, despite the odds, found a king.

I remember watching the original documentary and when the remains were exhumed this lady covered them with his Royal pennant which I found very moving and amazingly respectful…for that act alone she deserves a lot of credit and thanks ….all doubted her but she was right all along congratulations..
And it spoke volumes when the academics got all uncomfortable with the fact that she did that.
@@Concetta20as they said, nothing had yet been proved. They wouldn't allow it because the royal pennant is not to be used for a non-royal. At that point, there was no evidence that it was actually Richard.
This one of those "If it was a film script you wouldn't believe it'. Well it is and you have to. Philippa matched Howard Carter with her determination and came up with the same spectacular result.
Nice to see this! Many folk might be puzzled by the use of Sally Hawkins with short brown hair instead of a Philippa look-a-like (Rosamund Pike? Kate Winslett anyone?) but essentially it's the STORY that matters; the struggle, the research, the upsets, traumas and the amazing result. The moral is - keep on trying, against all odds!
Yeah I was surprised with the actress they chose, but she's got a soulful performance that emulates PL's demeanor, so they got that right.
I watched this great film at the cinema last night, delighted to hear phillipa's account here, and to discover that she was later awarded the MBE in connection, her efforts were highly regarded by our late queen. The local university and authorities would appear to have more in common with the 'U' word than Richard III did. You really need to watch this to appreciate Phillipa's ten year struggle and ultimate heartwarming triumph.
A really inspiring story about a very important discovery for the UK and the story of the very brave Philippa Langley who never gave up her search. A truly admirable woman!

The film does Philippa a great credit, a heart bursting and transfixing story and Steve Coogan is a very clever producer and script writer./actor. Go and see the film, it'll bring a tear to your eye, wonderful.
This is far more informative than the official trailer, which had me a bit concerned. Seeing this has put my mind at rest because Philippa is obviously happy with the results. I only hope that the late, great John Ashdown-Hill gets all the credit he deserves for his massive contributions.
So lovely to hear Philippa talking here and happy that she loved the film of her story. I saw The Lost King today and loved it. Amazing story all round. 😊
It is amazing how she researched where to look and felt that he would be under the letter R.
There are no coincidences. She was led by something we don't understand.

Richard III proved very lucky with women named Philippa. Gregory made him a rather likeable character in the White Queen too.
This is so great, that someone made a movie about this remarkable woman...it's one of the most amazing stories, and I'm still puzzling about the circumstances.
I saw "The Lost King" at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and love it. It is a great story, told wonderfully in this film. What a woman! Never mind that the actress playing Philippa in no way resembles the real Philippa. Not important. Sally Hawkins is brilliant in the role. Even the nasty guys played their roles well. One thing is the tension and contrast between the bigness of the story and the intimacy with which it is told in this film.
It's good that Richard III has been found because now the body of every English monarch except Edward V is accounted for.. Philippa Langley seems like a very nice lady. I'm glad she never gave up even though others were skeptical.
Wonderful, great story of true history, the only bad part is waiting to watch it until it launches! Keep up the wonderful trailers.
When something like this happens, I feel like destiny had a guiding hand. Spirit of Richard? Justice? I don't know. It's just too strange being a complete coincidence. I remember watching Indiana Jones, when he said, "X" does not mark the spot. Well, in this case, "R" marked the spot. I'm so glad he received a proper burial. We will never really know what happened to the Princes, what drove R3 to do what he did, but he was King of England and deserved a respectful burial befitting that station.

I do not know, who, precisely in the Uk, determines where a Royal will have their funeral, AND burial, but, if King Richard 3rd, was given an Anglican Funeral Service, then he should have been given a Roman Catholic Funeral Service. Remember, he reigned before King Henry 8th.

I really wish it wasn't Leicester though. He has been buried in a foreign land where recent events have caused it to become a dangerous place to visit.
He was king of England - Leicester is most definitely in England. He's not in a foreign land and Leicester is far from being a dangerous place to visit.
Last Time I looked, Leicester was part of England ( I lived there for over 30 years). It’s a city with heart and character. His burial in Leicester was entirely appropriate and dignified and approved of by the Royal Family.

What the what what, remeber this being on the news but thought the grave was discovered by chance.
No not at all, Philippa formed the Looking for Richard team and after several years of research along with Dr John Ashdown Hill who had always been researching the DNA, they got all the money together and employed Leicester University the archaeological department to dig. They wanted to dig a different part of the car park but Philippa and John insisted that they dig where the letter R was because that’s where the old maps showed that the choir of the church would be there. They were right! If they had started the dig where the University wanted to dig then Richard would not of been found!

@@groMMit1981 There are 2 very interesting documentaries. I’m not sure of the exact titles, something like “King in the Carpark”, the story of the search, DNA evidence etc, and “Richard III, new evidence” where a young man with very similar scoliosis is fitted with armour and trained to fight like Richard.
And Phillips has co-written a book detailing the search.

Ok, I looked this one up.
For us, it will be released in December. Specifically the 26th. However, I'm pretty sure it will come to us on DVD? I don't know on that one, but I don know that on the 26 of dec, a lot of history nerds are gonna be heading to the cinemas lol.
It’s being played in select Palace Cinemas on a limited number of dates in late Oct and early Nov as part of British Film Festival
In 1998 The car park was Resurfaced by the Council who Found Bodies underneath. They were Told to cover them back up as its a Very old Graveyard that was used by Nuns Hundreds of years ago… They found the one Body with the Bent Spine but No one took any interest in it except for One 17 year Old Lad who Had the Foresight to Paint a “ R “ over the spot while White Lining the Parking spaces….. That Young Man deserves to be thanked but has been ignored to this day..😢

I met Philipa at his laying in state she's a very attractive lady with long blonde hair miss Hawkins is very plain with short dark hair I don't mean to b picky but why was someone who looked more like Philips chosen to play her??
The film was about Philippa’s story, not her. She wasn’t bothered about a look a like being on screen.

Sally is a great actor. The casting would have ment she was the best one to play the character and I agree. She has both vulnerability and strength. The lookalike thing is of no importance.

We went to see the dig in Leicester in September 2012 one weekend after they had started looking, guided round by Mathew Morris from the University of Leicester who was actually in the trench when Richard III's bones were exposed and shouted "Stop" to the mechanical digger. Poor Mathew could not tell us R3 had been found as the DNA tests had not been done, it must have been hard for him when we were inches from the trench! The late John Ashdown-Hill, the author of "The Last Days of Richard III", identified this site and the DNA line. This is a retelling movie, a fictionalised version of the truth. If you wanted an accurate doc, I assure you UA-cam has plenty.
In real life, there was no apparition of Richard III. That should be your clue as to why the actors aren't mimicking the actual looks of their real-life counterparts. And I can assure you that this isn't the first film to do that.
So, don't bitch about something like that when you know that this is a movie- based on real life events- and not a documentary.

Funnily enough, most portraits of Richard III are misidentified portraits of Henry VII. That is why some show him with grey hair, wrinkles, dent in cheek and one eye bit lazy. All traits found in depicstions of Henry VII. Also the red background was another clue. As for one shoulder up, even prince Arthur is depicted that way, it was simply artist's weird style. Although in some portraits it was later altered too. I am sure that portrait with broken sword is Richard and i am unsured about the one with arched top, but rest are not him. Experts just didn't realise it yet. It will take while, as it did with Parr's portraits mislablled for centuries as lady Jane Grey.
There are only two significant portraits of Rlll, the famous 16C copy in the NPG and the most authentic, earlier one in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries, having the arched frame and evidently a companion piece to the portrait of Edward IV. There are also the doctored version of the NPG painting in the Royal Collection, and the derogatory propaganda Broken Sword picture. No portraits of Henry Vll are ever mislabelled as Rlll to my knowledge. Henry's features are extremely well known, from the terracotta bust to his moving death mask, and any Ricardian would be quick to rectify mis-identification.
@@rosemaryallen2128 You never heard of it, because that is my theory, based upon research i did few months back. I did write to NPG about it. They thanked me for sharing research with them, but they cannot reidentify those all portraits across world without further evidence.
Especially given some portraits are thought to be first mentioned in inventory accounts of Henry VIII as Richard-yet it highly unlikely already by then somebody could mistaken Henry VII and Richard. Basically told me to keep digging.
Strangely reconstruction of Richard III's scull is actually proving that he resembled Henry VII to surprising degree. But very few people actually compare them(their portraits) in detail.
Imo both camps hate each other so much they don't look at the other guy closely.
Myself i was suprised to realise all but two Richards(those in Society of antiquaries-with arched top and broken sword) could actually depict Henry instead.
Because on first glance they don't look like him. The brows are the main issue, for they are very low, while Henry normally has high arched brows.(This explainable if form for portraits labelled as Richard has been made when the King was in mourning, deeply upset. ) Also sometimes artists did mistakes or their artistic skill was simply not very good.
We assume such artist never painted royalty. Well, in Netherlands(back then known for its painters) Habsburgs were painted by master of Legend of Madgalene and Coninxloo-and both these artists painted proportions in 1490-1515 in such manner, that you cannot tell if it is kid or adult sometimes.
Also, workshops' work can depict same person looking drastically different, because painters come and go and sometimes entire workshop is working one painting.
@@rosemaryallen2128 I would say one really has to understand the habits of painter's workshop to get grip on their work. Otherwise you end with lots of wrong assumptions.
Yes version in RCT was altered, to raise up one shoulder. But there might be logical explanation other than propaganda against RIchard. That they moved it to fit the original sketches. That workshop operated from c.1500-1525. RCT's version is very likely posthumous(given when tree was felled) and would be created using original sketches done from life. Now, as of yet we don't have results on painting of prince Arthur in Hever Castle-if it is by Wewyck or not(they're testing it), but if it is, then it is earliest known surviving piece by Wewyck's workshop. And it has one shoulder up, even though no mention of Arthur being deformed. So it could ahve been style of that workshop in c.1500-1505.
But later stages of workshop had different style, more accurate in proportions. Yet for those posthumous copies of Henry VIII's parenst they were using original sketches and it is possible they tried to stay true to them at price of realism.
It is on his death effigy you can see the dent in cheek and in some portraits you can see the slightly lazy eye, and in rest of them wrinkles and white hair(though not in all of them, in some he has brown hair), those truly are Henry VII's features. So, since i found those in portraits of Richard III, i cannot just ignore it and say-oh it must be the propaganda.
Because that is the lazy way out. Not searching for explanation, just because it would require weeks if not months of further research. So it is easier to say it is propaganda against Richard which made him ugly, grey-haired, wrinkled, gave him lazy eye etc...
But more logical is misidentification. And Richard's fans will fight against it. They love those portraits. They love the idea of propaganda against Richard in portraits!
So for them it is unfanthomable idea. And Henry VII's fans spend years looking at those portraits and disliking them, assuming it Richard. They will also be against reidentification.
Both camps might hate me for even sugesting it.
@@maearcher4721 I watched conclusive proof that the NPG portrait is Richard lll - The reconstruction of his features from his skull matched against it exactly. The model worker was so amazed as she worked that she checked all her measurements again. You can't mistake that prominent chin! If you look at the 1501 portrait of Henry Vll, the chin is quite recessive.
@@rosemaryallen2128 Problem is those reconstructions can be as little as only 70% accurate. Thus it is still possible, given we talk about distant cousins. Broken sword portrait actually looks more like the facial reconstruction than rest of them.

I was surprised at first as I know Philippa and was disappointed- but she’s not bothered, all she was concerned about was getting her story told. The other actors in the film all pretty well resembled the real people.
Langley, when faced with Richard's twisted skeleton exclaimed "No!" because she was convinced her beloved was slandered by Shakespeare. Even when faced with the Truth Langley hangs on to her dreams. The Scientists showed Remarkable Patience with Langley who clearly has a schoolgirl crush on Richard 111. Thank goodness the Scientists were Sensible & Methodical. Silly movie.

Philippa had spent years researching for where the Friary might be, years researching about Richard and anyone who is remotely interested would know that it was Shakespeare and his over the top play who said Richard lll had a malformed spine. No one in Richard’s lifetime knew about it. I’m not surprised she said “no!” and appeared emotional when the remains were exactly where she said they’d be - and he did have a twisted spine. If you had spent a lot of money and years of research you’d be emotional when it all came together.
Obviously, Shakespeare only knew about his spine after killing him at Bosworth, stripping him of his armour and leaving him in the Newark for three days. Thank goodness the friars had the decency to bury him.
The archaeologists never thought she’d find him and were quite sneery with her and laughed “ if you find king Richard I’ll eat my hat” … until he WAS found then they wanted all the glory and hijacked the project.
The reason she went a bit 'off' was because few people knew at that time scoliosis of the spine doesn't result in the same visible deformity of a hunched back. We know from his skeleton it was crooked but not to any impairment, nor hunched over (which the Tudors seemed to popularize). Had he not been exposed on the battlefield after death no-one save his perhaps some of his inner-most circle would have known about it. Indeed none of the visitors to his court mentioned it (as clothing can hide it easily).
