    In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a carpark in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley, whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. THE LOST KING is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England's history.

    • @LynneConnolly
      @LynneConnolly Рік тому +72

      She wasn't mocked. The university welcomed her. They identified the car park as a place of interest back in 1985, old maps had shown them where the choir of Greyfriars was, but they had to wait until the property was vacant before they were allowed to excavate it. They had already done a preliminary survey, but they were happy for her to help with the initial radiography survey. She did not pay the for the dig, as she claims on her website. The university and the local authority did that. She did help to raise funds for the project.
      But that wouldn't have made a "quirky English film," would it?
      Coincidentally, the only remaining standing part of the friary used to be in another car park, at De Montfort University under the Hawthorn Building. It's been moved to the museum now.

    I'm very excited about this and it looks well done with just the right humor and pathos (please don't let me down, film makers!). I was introduce to Rlll at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival about 1978. Then I read Daughter of Time. He was still my bad guy. Then, as a Yank attending the University of Leicester in the 80's, I visited the Tower of London and had a yeoman correct me, with some anger, that Richard wasn't the killer as Shakespeare had portrayed him. I began to rethink. A boyfriend took me to both Bosworth field where the ghosts are, and to see Anthony Sher's brilliant Richard at Stratford. These were all unrelated. And in 1985, we happened to be in the ancient market in downtown Leics. when who should ride out to battle with his soldiers, but a Dick3, to commemorate his last stand in 1485. Richard had been following me for years. And it was only a coincidence I attended that uni. So when his bones were discovered 27 years later, it was beyond thrilling. Bless you Phillipa!

      @dave and Eiffert: What a wondrous telling of a great story - thank you!
      I’m on Richard’s Good Side: the movie ‘Anonymous’ gives us an idea of who The Nasty was really based on...& the groundlings loved that!
      I came to love Richard through Aneurin Barnard’s sympathetic portrayal - right from boyhood, through his love of Anne, to the bitter end!
      I’d admired Margaret Beaufort for a long time...a mother at 13, a widow soon after, & her fierce protection of her son, Henry Tudor: but when I began learning of the depraved depths to which she was prepared to sink, I lost all feeling for her...what strident & inhumane times they were!
      Margaret was outwardly pious, & believed that she was following God’s intention... but the Commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’....supplanting herself into the York household...the Princes (Catherine & Edward’s sons - the next in the Plantagenet Line) kept for safety in the Tower... the bribery of Richard’s allies...it’s unbearable!
      Back in the Day, I wasn’t that interested in the scanty history that we were taught - almost in passing! It’s great to find one’s awareness opening up, & becoming so curious about what came before, via
      the dramas & destinies brought to us by films, theatre, & the internet!
      Thank you for your story: take care & be well!
