THE DUKE is the true story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history.
Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly - he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge - Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage - how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale.
"For those not familiar with the court, that was the plea, not the verdict!"....................hilarious!!!!!!!
Had a good giggle at that.
Fokin hilarious m8tea
So funny
I know! I laughed out loud at that.
How refreshing to see two great actors in their mid seventies still working so much in high profile projects like this one
yup they are still coining it in
By 'high profile' I'm sure you mean Dame Helen Mirren in Red and Red 2 and The Fast and the Furious, not this trifle that has been on the shelves for three years.
@@shelbynamels973 lol is it not good?
@@ruthiehensh I have no idea. It is a British period - and not the good Jane Austin period - comedy drama set in a drab Yorkshire. You decide. My point was that this movie, unlike the three I mentioned, had practically NO advertising budget.
IN wide release in the US since 4/29, it so far had a box office of $156 400, barely enough to cover the catering bill.
High profile this ain't.
@@shelbynamels973 just saw this… as an American, I love British humor … this film no matter how much it makes is a real gem of a movie! Love it love it love it!
You don’t need green screens and effects- just a bloody good story
As a fan of sci/fantasy Green screen and effects films I would agree. One of my favourite films of all time, Still Crazy, has none of that.
Green screen and special effects are now a key part of most historical dramas. Why go have the expense and hassle of making a 2020 London street look like a 1960 London street if you can do it afterwards with computer for a fraction of the budget?
@@MrBond249 No, I get that. And I’ve enjoyed watching the UA-cam videos of how digital special effects have shaped The Crown. But I suppose the difference is they help the story along.. they aren’t the story. It all comes down to a good script.
@@MrBond249 Yes...but the effects in those categories of period movies are not the "stars" of the movie. They establish the place and time and serve the story and the actors. they are the sets not the fireworks
I counted at least 12 shots that had some degree of green screen or cgi work in this trailer alone!
We can still count on good drama, acting and great comedy! What a cast 👏🙌
I love British comedy. Love to see Mirren, Broadbent, and Goode.
Thank God there's still some people making good movies nowadays like "The Duke"! 90% of the Hollywood product today is totally disposable trash.
Don't agree, that would be 99%.
I wouldn't mind watching older films. I recently learned about Fellini's work. Extraordinary!
As an American I can truthfully say when brits make a movie they get it right. The US use to make great movies. Now it’s just virtue signaling garbage. They can no longer put out a movie with a decent plot. Thank you England for some real movies. Keep them coming. I will be watching.
@@beverlyjordan8957 Just stop. I’m sure you’re keen to complain about “virtue signaling,” “wokeness,” and other buzz words that you’ve heard, but the truth is we are coming off a decent Oscar season that had quite a few good American films. Your “criticism” says more about you than it does the state of movies today. Now a real divide is these tent pole blockbusters that the studios are churning out, which are overwhelmingly popular all across the world, versus (actual) films like this one.
That none sense aside, this looks fantastic and I will certainly watch it!
What, you mean you don’t appreciate the untold number of Fast & Furious and the like.

THE GREATER GOOD
Whenever I watch this trailor, and I've watched it a few times now, I smile, I laugh and I feel good. So looking forward to seeing this movie and the brilliant Jim Broadbent & Helen Mirren.
Jim Broadbent can do no wrong. I love him in everything he's done, especially the Mike Leigh movies.
Yes!!!!!!
Agree.
Have you seen him as Marie Antoinette?
@@manonymous4737 I don't see that on his imdb page.
I still love him in The National Theatre of Brent!
Full of Great British actors, I will definitely be watching that when it's released.
yes the same faces as per normal
Finally, a film that really shows how talented Jim Broadbent is!
Yes he is indeed a very talented actor.
"What's he asking for?"
"£140,000"
"For what?"
"Charity..."
"Good grief!"
🤣💀
Such a good trailer that I had to watch it twice
What a relief! And with Helen Mirren! Pure Joy!
Oh God I'm looking forward to this film! I've watched the trailer three times and I'm still smiling. Just what we all need. Thank you. Enjoy!
I went to see this at the cinema..such a feel good movie x
This is an absolutely brilliant classic British film...!!!!
Finally another movie showing us Geordies a bit of love!!!
This looks fab…what a wonderful pair of actors they are…!
We need someone like him today. A everyday hero/ heroine with loads of common sense.
Someone fighting for the greater good, not themselves.
0:44 “Shock! Yes I’m shocked! There’s a stolen masterpiece in me wardrobe!”
Helen Mirren with a Geordie accent, class.
Whereas normally she's clarse.
very wobbly
*Helen Mirren* walking around *Bradford* saying how much she loves the place, while in the same month we had *Royalty* and other celebrities walking around saying the same thing.
"It's for the greater good of mankind!"
"The greater good!"
the greater good
Hahaha
We need to figure out what that used to be, a.s.a.p! Tip: it is not shareholder value.
SHUT IT!!!
... Even the trailer was heart warming
FINALLY! A movie I want to see!
Such a delight Mr. Broadbent and Helen Mirren... Beautiful!!
This looks fucking great! We need a tonic.
Don’t forget the gin. 😉
Jim Broadbent is a
Superb Actor.😊
Cannot wait to See
"The Duke."‼️
Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren are two of my favorite actors, and especially when it looks like a great story. Next week will be 2 years since I've been to a movie in a theater, the first year I was sort of sick (I'm an old guy) and the 2nd year was damned covid etc. I hope it shows up in a theater.
It will be released in UK cinemas on September 3
Is streaming free online
@@MC-kh6oe thanks for telling me
@@wmadamzzz just Google pelisplus and the name of the movie.
my heart sings with anticipation; story, comedy and some of my favorite performers
What a great film, the best of British acting, humour and authentic working class experience. I loved every minute and I urgent the public to support this film instead of another worn out super hero franchise! 🇬🇧
i totally agree this film had a limited release and on l saw when it was on the telly and what the other film of which did see One Life about ~~Nicholas Winterton again a true story and i remember him appearing on This Life
I'll tell ya: Oscar nominations for both, and possibly and award
People still care about that sort of thing?
If your movie is a masterpiece, then unfortunatly you won't be nominated as the Oscars have extremely strict rules about nominations. You need to have racial minority or LGBT main characters. I wish I was joking, but it's the truth I'm afraid. Most movies created today care more about diversity than quality due to these rules.

*Bradford* aka the *6th biggest city in the UK by population,* the *7th biggest city in the UK by area,* and the world's first *UNESCO City of Film* is all over this film.
They used:
1 - Various areas in and around *Bradford City Hall* yet strangely they didn't use the *Victorian courtroom* which is normally used for productions, whether they're set in modern times or not.
2 - *Cartwright Hall* art gallery in *Lister Park.*
3 - The heritage neighbourhood of *Little Germany.*
4 - The street *Upper Piccadilly.*
5 - The market complex *Cannon Mills.*
There's probably other *Bradford* locations which haven't been revealed, and most likely won't be revealed, but will no doubt be spotted by me if there is.
Most of those *Bradford* locations will no doubt be ignored by the mainstream media, just like they always are, as they prefer to focus on cities which they incorrectly believe are bigger or more famous.
Fans of *Peaky Blinders* (among other productions) should recognise most of those *Bradford* locations but they won't, because like I said we're largely ignored by the mainstream media.
*The Duke* also contains *1 of the 3 Winston Churchill's* from *Peaky Blinders* in the cast at a *Bradford* location, who just like the *other 2 Winston Churchill's* has filmed here in *Bradford* more than once.
Hearing Jim Broadbent saying "The Greater Good"
Now this is the Wallace & Gromit live-action movie I never knew I wanted :)
The best British comedy since the Ealing films.
*Rita, Sue and Bob Too* the greatest British comedy of all time, which is ignored by the masses outside *Yorkshire,* was mainly filmed in the same city as *The Duke.*
I cannot wait, looks like another English masterpiece.
I've seen it and it was class.
I was expecting it to be exaggerated bull, but it kept true(mostly) to the actual story.

This is priceless! I didn't think they made films like this any longer.
It isn't the acting, the script is just so quintessentially British. Of all things to steal, a piece of art.

Jim is one of the most believable actors i've ever seen
What a wonderful take, all the more it's a true story of an ordinary man
Helen Mirren, what an actress.
I watched three movie trailers today and this is by far what made me go WOW.. for some reason 😊

I did know about this story so I am looking forward to seeing the film. And with such great actors as well.
A movie without explosions, space invaders, super freaks, ghouls, monsters, slashers or sexual deviants? I don't believe it!
Thank the flying Spaghetti Monster That these are still made
Yes, films like this - comedies and period pieces - get made and released every year.
Wait! What? No sexual deviants? Then I won't watch it!

Damn. It's been a while since I've watched a movie trailer for something that could actually fill the roll...of a real movie.

I look forward to seeing this film.
Mirren and Broadbent? There's no way that I'm not watching this.

Great movie just watched tonight
More than just a ridiculously charming British comedy - All rise for the Duke! Question is why haven't we seen any of Kempton Bunton's plays? Still 'we' marvel over Shakespeare's obsession with kings and queens and Britain's pride in an over privileged Duke of Wellington, but not without a common sense of humour.
Helen Mirren...what an aoutstanding actress. First saw her in The Long Good Friday with Bob Hoskins in 1980.
We need something like this to watch! Looks so good!
had me crying just watching the trailer. damn.
Two amazing actors. What a treat!
LoveBroadbent! British comedy blows American comedy out of the water.
yup, nobody's funny there, not anymore.
Yeah, that must be why American movies are a 100 billion dollar industry and no one can even name a British studio today. Stick to making booze.
@@makokx7063 Well, now you force me to bring up intelligence quotient and the marked differences therein between British and American cinema and TV. There's absolutely no contest here.
@@s.d.3492 why do the British have such an enormous inferiority complex towards the Americans? They’re obsessed with them
@@makokx7063 I can name countless studios and sets, mainly in the city next door (aka officially the 2nd biggest city in the UK by population) which is slightly bigger in area and population, however my city aka the world's first *UNESCO City of Film* as seen all over this trailer, has more real locations than they do.
OMG JIM Broadbent and Helen Mirren ... brit comedy, old look and love & charm... bring it on!!!

Well, looks like the sort of sentimental, feel-good twaddle that people love, so I'm sure it will do well. (The historical figure on whom this is based, wanted the government to get rid of the television licence fee, which he resented having to pay.)
It's good to see what appears to be a real film about real people with no PC or woke bullshit, I'll pay to watch this.
I think Goya would approve, at least for the intention of the theft. He abhorred war, as poignantly represented in the Third Of May (a painting depicting a firing squad execution). Looking on the Wiki, the old chap that stole it (a disabled bus driver earning just 179 pounds in todays money), couldn't fathom why he had to pay for a TV licence, so he took it hoping to bargain for himself and other poor people to not have to pay their licences. I'd argue theft of art isn't always great idea, however well intentioned & even if you wish to return it, given it was owned by all of us in the National Gallery. Art should be viewed by the greatest number of people possible imo. Still, you've got to admire his tenacity & the good will behind it.
This looks a treat!
Yep. This is all I want.
