    THE DUKE is the true story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history.
    Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly - he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge - Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage - how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale.

      There doesn’t seem to be anything that Dame Helen can’t do. At first I thought this movie was going to be about the Duke of Edinburgh when I saw that she was in it. She looks like the Queen, but Jim Broadbent isn’t built like Prince Philip- Wrong duke! Lol this looks like a must see.

    Watched this on streaming not long ago. I knew about the painting, but I had no idea that this was the story behind its theft! A marvelous performance by Broadbent, who conjures just as much magic here as in Harry Potter. Great fun.

    What is it about Britain that inspires so many films about eccentric common people doing big, crazy things? The Full Monty, Calendar Girls, The Lost King...Does it have to do with the awareness of social class?

    • @mohammedyahayah8522
      @mohammedyahayah8522 Рік тому +3

      I think it's the need to upend traditions. The British are seen by both themselves and other nationalities as sticklers for tradition. So it comes as a surprise when they showcase this rebellious spirit. Like you mentioned, you have this story, The Lost King and more recently, the late Princess Diana and Prince Harry.
      Just my observation.

      a well financially supported theater industry and that most of the world speaks english.
      there are plenty of stories like this in my country of Romania and in Ukraine but they're not in english and even if they were we lack the big distributer companies.
      How many of you reading my comment have seen the Breadwinner (story about an afgan girl, animated by an irish studio and financed by Angelina Jolie) or any french production that is the same thing as this film The Duke...how about Albaian films on this topic, financed by turks?
      I'm telling you it's the language, the money and acting schools rooted in theater. Maybe with the publicity Ukraine is getting we'll get a Holomodor film, god knows we have a bigilion Holocaust films, some money and eye balls can be spared.

    Isn’t it fascinating that “compassionate “ movies like this one and “Allelujah” are being released at a time when compassion and social care are most conspicuous by their absence in the UK? No doubt, the makers hope to move their audiences. But the general public are not the ones who must be moved, touched, influenced and changed. It is the comfortably insulated from all troubles, the billionaires, the corporate magnates, the politicos in their disconnected and selfish bubbles, the staunch Brexiteers who fatally damaged the social fabric, the bureaucrats who initiated decades long dismemberment and privitisation of the vital services of the NHS, that must be “moved”. What a vain hope. These people have no hearts.

    Weird. A movie with a story, a hero, a narrative which is also entertaining and lacks THE MESSAGE (ridiculous alpha females, "karens", "Mary Sues", minorities, white privilege)? Where was the car chase? The explosion? The CGI? What's with all the cogent and natural dialogue?

    • @Paelorian
      @Paelorian Рік тому

      I'm not so sure this is really a departure from THE MESSAGE, although it's advertised as an old-fashioned English movie about old-fashioned English people in old-fashioned England of the past. Mid-century, before the massive foreign colonization and cultural revolution changed English culture and the people who live there. The motive of the story is a some kind of class warfare angle. I expect that through that angle of the story this film will meet it's quota of all-but-mandated political, economic, and social justice messaging. Seems like every film has to, in order to pass the modern "board of censors".
      The story is set too early for him to be committing criminal theft to ransom funds to sterilize young children or institute a racial caste system biased against the local indigenous population, but our hero will probably be demanding more funding for "well-intentioned" but counter-productive and destructive socialist programs that create widespread dependency and trap people in the underclass. The audience will also be at least indirectly encouraged to vote Labour. One wouldn't want to be a heartless elitist like the rich white villains who spend public funds on luxury and decadence but leave the sympathetic poor black war widows out in the cold without their fair share of public funds.

    • @johnsprague4914
      @johnsprague4914 Рік тому +3

      @@Paelorian Well reasoned and well written. Far too erudite and nuanced a point of view for a comment section. But I stand corrected. It will have facets and elements of THE MESSAGE. Still, ain't no car chases or explosions so American audiences will be confused.

      @@lizziebkennedy7505 I really don't understand why otherwise educated people continue to push socialism/communism/Marxism on a sort of cycle.
      It always starts in the Universities and entertainment, the educated and privileged class. Utterly ignoring history and executing the "no true Scotsman" fallacy, they start pushing communism and dismiss people who point out historical fact saying, "well that wasn't' REAL communism". Over time, if they are successful, the country tries it, it ends in poverty, human suffering, misery and genocide. We take a breath for about a decade or so and repeat the process. It's just weird and stupid. These ideas have killed hundreds of millions of people.
