  • My First Venus Flytrap iv bought online. The DCXL is in competition with the B52 for the biggest trap title. It will outgrow my typicals even though they have a 3 yr head start. The DCXL caught a fly within 24 hrs after unboxing. :) AMAZING!

      Its several plants in one pot but there all divisions of each other. It started as one plant. That's what it turned into. You get more every year.

    You mentioned "My climate" were is your climate, like what state do you live in.
    Just getting my first traps this week in the mail. It looks like you're in a colder climate than I am, like way north of north Florida, if so you have done a great job with that big pot of traps.
    How long did it take to fill that big pot of traps? I'm starting out with Typical VFT this week, can't wait for my 4 plants to look like yours.

      I live in western Pennsylvania a few miles from Pittsburgh. From my understanding it's easier to grow flytraps in a place that has both hot and cold seasons. If your far south where it stays warm all yr round you need to figure out what to do with em in the winter months. Flytraps need a dormancy period every yr in order to stay healthy and to continue to grow yr after yr. The same way trees lose there leaves during the winter and basically hibernate so do flytraps. I couldn't ask for a better climate, our summers are hot and our winters are cold. I leave them outside till the end of October so they get a taste of the cold and they go dormant naturally as they should. I bring them in the garage till about March and the grow season starts all over. Having a cold season is a must. If they don't have a dormant stage for 4-5 months out of the yr they will eventually weaken and die. Some ppl that live in warmer climates without winters may put there plants in the fridge for a few months. With me everything happens naturally I don't do anything other than prevent them from frosting which is why I bring them inside by November. My garage is the coolest part of the house. Every yr you should repot and you will find you have more plants then the previous yr. Once a flytrap reaches maturity they will start multiplying. 1 becomes 2 and 2 becomes 4 and 4 becomes 8 and 8 becomes 16 and so on. I started back in 2013 so that's how long it took. I have well over 200 flytraps so I'm multiplying by the hundreds every yr now. So many I'm not sure how to handle it or what to do with them all. I needs to start more pots because I can't hardly move the pot there in its so big. Anyway I hope this helped. If you have any questions go to forums on flytrapcare.com

      @@crazidirtbiker I live 20 mile north of the pitcher plant bogs in north Florida. floridahikes.com/pitcher-plants. I'm going to the bogs next week to see if I can find free Spagnum Moss to put in my biog garden.
      We have 2 1/2 to 3 pretty cold months on the winter. It's been close to freezing every night except just before a front, like we're getting today. We do get snow once in a long time, but just a dusting.
      Some say there are wild traps growing in the next county west of here. I think we're pretty close to the right climate all year round from here, 30 miles inland from the coast.
      You did a great job with your plants. Found a video on UA-cam that shows how to tissue culture dead traps. First you peal it off down to the rhyzome where there is still some live tissue. Then cut off the black part, hit it with root hormone and stick it in the dirt. It's not a 100% but still produces plants. I think I will try that, you throw the dead leaves away anyway, so might as well try it.
      Thanks for the info, if needed I can put them in the ice box a few months, but I think we're good to leave them out all year long.

    Crazybiker, what firtulizer do you use on your VFTs? And how do you apply it? I have a lot of baby VFTs that are too small to eat anything but I've heard that you can spray them with something and they'll absorb nutrients with from their leafs.

    • @crazidirtbiker
      @crazidirtbiker  7 років тому +1

      I don't apply fertilizer. I may have confused ppl in the vid by using that word. I meant bugs, I use the term fertilize cuz feeding it bugs that have a high nitrogen content is really the only way to fertilize other then what u said about foliar feeding. Iv never tried it and I wouldn't unless ur willing to risk it all. Flytraps are pretty sensitive and particular when it comes to water and growing medium. Although I sprayed them this spring with a overly heavy dose of neem oil extract for a major aphid infestation. My plants seemed to take that well and ultimately bounced back. For babys, you would be surprised how small flytraps can be and still catch prey when left out side. Smaller traps attract smaller bugs like fruit flies etc. If u really have the urge to feed the tiny ones ill tell u the secret. Dried blood worms. You turn it into powder by grinding or smashing it the best u can. Put a little on a spoon or something and add a couple drops of water at a time till u get a nice moist clump of blood worm goo. Don't add to much water, if its to runny add more powder. Take a tooth pick and place how much u need depending on trap size. This is a great way to boost growth of young plants and the best growers use this trick. Try on just 1 or 2 at first and don't put to much in, a lil goes along way. If you over do it blackening of the traps may occur. This moist magic powder is easily digested so It works wonders. I hope this helped. I'm putting up my flytrap update today. Thanks for watching

      Yes it definitely helps! Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I already got dried blood worms and fed some of my small traps. And I ordered dcxl from the same place you got yours. Good luck with growing it to both of us! 😀

    when was the last time you change the soil? how the heck do you plant that cluster

    • @crazidirtbiker
      @crazidirtbiker  4 роки тому +1

      I usually change my growing media every yr. The only reason I do that is because every yr they need divided anyway and need to be put in something bigger so while there out I change or at least freshin it up. I get clusters like that by dividing and repotting every yr that's all. This pot is nothing compared to what it is now. See for yourself Iv made flytrap videos every month since iv started growing these

      Both. There was probably 10 or so plants in that pot at that time but they all came from divisions from the same plant. Over the years i kept dividing them and replanting them back in a pot. Depending on how you look at it they could technically be one.

      DC XL is definitely my favorite. FlyTrapStore sells the best plants anywhere. Matt has definitely mastered the art of growing these carnivores. It's the only place I buy mine from. Finally decided on buying one of these now that the prices are a little more reasonable. Your regular flytraps look awesome, too.

      Raptor Its hard to say. Typically any plant bought from a local garden center or home depot will be the regular variety. Unless you buy your plants from a legit source like flytrapstore.com you probably will never know the cultivar.

      Everything in the blue pot started as 1 half dead neglected typical flytrap I bought at home depot 5 years ago. It takes time, patience and many years to get something like that. The DCXL I bought from Flytrapstore.com I recommend buying all your plants from there. I wish I would of a long time ago. Lowes and Home Depot usually have them around spring but they tend not to be in the best of shape.

      yeah if you order them from a good nursery online. The ones at lowes and home depot usually aren't in the best of shape. Never grow from seed it takes 3-4 years for a flytrap to become adult sized.

      Cameron Yes the plants in the blue pot i started as 1 baby plant 5 years ago. They are just typical VFTs. I bought it at a local hardware store like Lowe's or home depot. I'm amazed at what it turned into. If you look on my traplife playlist u can watch the first vid in 2013 when it was just a baby. I can't wait to have that many DCXLs, I planted them in with my pot of typicals this spring along with my baby goldstrikes
