    I'm on 40s and a Dana 30HP on my JKU.
    -Gussetted
    -Sleeved
    -4.56 (pentastar 3.6 has been great)
    -Stock shafts (I'd rather those break than my gears)
    -aftermarket wheel bearings
    -aftermarket ball joints
    -aftermarket bigger brake kit
    -NOT LOCKED (I don't think it's a good idea in a Dana 30)
    Only thing that's gone to shit is the driver side axle seal.
    My Dana 30 could care less that I'm on 40s.
    I'm very easy on the accelerator & choose easy lines. If I can't get over a rock I go around it. Pride is what kills these Dana 30s in my opinion

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah i agree with you on braking a axle shaft over a ring gear, thats why i havent beefed up the axle shafts either. Now if i could get the drive train to the point that the u joint on the drive shaft was the weak spot i would, but there are to many what ifs for that to happen.
      And 100% agree pride is what brakes axles, im not winning a trophy or money by getting up something, im just trying to have fun and see new places while being able to still drive home. If you cant make it up the more aggressive line pick a softer path, if that dont work pull the winch line and lay some tracks. No shame in not braking anything.

    at 00:45 minutes,this guy in this video reveals the 'secret sauce ' for the D30 being wheeled on 35" & greater tires: the weight.
    if you get your weight of wheel + tire under 100lbs , you can wheel with buggy's & keep up.

    Ok strange question then. I got 37’s on my dana 30, also 373 gears (lol i know I know) but im not having any issues except the antilock kicks on and off randomly.
    So what do ya recommend?

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 місяці тому

      @@thereddragonslair9548 so it’s more then likely a wheel speed sensor, it also controls the ABS. You have 1 on every wheel. The front ones go into the wheel hub\ bearing. The rear goes into the back dust shield. The rear are really easy to get to, the front take a little more work to do but are pretty easy. That is the only thing that would be causing that to happen. Your tire size and gear ratio shouldn’t matter at all. We were having the same issue then sure enough my front wheel bearing started going bad. Once we replaced it the issue was gone with the light kicking on and off randomly.
      So sensors or wheel bearing/hub assembly is what you need to look into. But to be honest it really isn’t anything to be super concerned about.

    I went with 4.88 and an eaton elocker in my dana30. How your jeep was losing traction and regaining it quicliky is why I went with a front locker. I agree with you..plus a Dana 30 is a 44 just a smaller ring and pinion..I’ve been running aggressive 35”s and a lunch box locker on mine for 10 years hasn’t broke yet..it goes about anywhere ..it’s 87 xj and it’s been great..I just pick the smart lines..

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому

      The dana 30 has a 27 spline, the 44 has a 30 spline, the 30 has a 6.5" ring and the 44 has a 8" ring. But everything else is 100% the same. You can change out the carrier or get a locker and run 30 spline axle shafts. Then the only difference from there is the R&P for sure. But most people dont know that. Its a tuff little axle for sure with lots of potential.

    So how's the dana 30 going. Just looking for an update. I have 5.38 gears, getting truss on my 30.. next set of tire I'm upgrading to 37s from 35s. I do some pretty rough stuff with my jeep so curious to know.

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому

      mine is doing great with 38s. But can I ask why are you going with such a low gear? 5.38 is crazy low for 37s. The proper gearing for a 37 is 4.88s if you do that, your highway RPMs are going to be crazy high. Also, keep in mind the lower the gear you go, the smaller the pinion gets, that will become a weak point. Especially if your going to have lockers. Im not telling you not to do it, but just word of caution with that low gear you pinion will have a really small patch of contact on your ring gear teeth.
      Look up ring pinion size differences, from 4.10 4.56 4.88 5.13 and 5.13 is like nothing. I have a 6 speed with 4.56 and 38s. 4.88s would be nice but with 4.56 i can go 70 no issues and in 4low crawling is a none issue.
      If you have a auto and its a 7 or 8 speed getting a programmer will make up the difference on power for driving, my buddy has a JT on 37s with 4.10 and programmed his jeep and he has never had a issue.
      But its your jeep and i want you to do what you feel is best for your needs, this is just my thoughts on it. Also my other buddy has 39s with 5.13s and he has never had a issue but his is a ultimate dana 44.

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells

      But the dirty little 30 is still kicking strong and doing its job, its a tuff little thing for sure.

  • @AceGoodheart
    @AceGoodheart 2 роки тому +1

    My jeep is still sporting the Dana 30 w/ 35" tires and no diff. lockers. Until I upgrade to a Dana 44 for the front and get diff. lockers I'm gonna be doing the easier trails. So far I've yet to do any off-roading but that is going to change pretty soon. I'm about to install my new front stubby bumper w/ winch and we'll give it a go. I'm very nervous about breaking something because I'm not a mechanic and my jeep is my daily drive, so I'm gonna be going easy till I can beef it up a bit more. I'm really hoping I can afford to get it all done before I buy my next set of tires because I'm so ready for 37's".
    On 2nd thought, I just might say screw it and put on 37's and get my jeep re-geared and save up my money till something breaks. I would like to have lockers though but I don't want to buy lockers for a dana 30.
    Any idea how much a re-gear costs?

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому

      For this jeep it was 1800 for both axles because its geared with 3.73 and i went to 4.56 and needed a new carrier for the proper deck height, but if I had 4.10s then it would have only been 500 a axle. So 1000 total.
      We are running 38 and have taken it on some pretty good trails, and either later this year or early next year we will be putting a locker in it. So we will be taking it even further lol.
      You dont need to be afraid of doing your own work, its a great time to learn and get some experience and learn your rig. Its alot of fun learning and working on them as much as it is driving them.

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому +1

      No, it's an open diff, so it was just the differential transfering power to the wheel that was losing traction. It makes noise but isn't braking anything.

  • @michaellarkin6175
    @michaellarkin6175 Рік тому +1

    How do you feel about he 4.56’s? Do you ever feel like you should have gone more than that?

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  Рік тому +1

      Yes and no, the 4.56 was a good gear ratio for everyday driving around Houston, but in the hills and rock crawling, it did leave a lot to be desired.
      So we broke the teeth on the rear dana 44. and then decided to regear to a 5.13, seeing as we had to do 1 axle, we might as well re do both.
      So i can tell you going from a 4.56 to a 5.13 there was a difference. With the 4.56 we had a longer rang in 1st, 2nd and 3 gear when shifting. But on the high way in the hills or against the wind we would be stuck running in 5th gear around 70. We couldn't really get into 6th.
      Now with the 5.13s the shift points are much sooner in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But the hills and wind are a none issue.
      With the 4.56 gears we were getting around 16mpg all around, and would be about 2300rpm at 70. With the 5.13 we get around 13-14mpg and 2900 rpm at 70.
      So they both have there ups and down, but if rock crawling is your thing i would go 4.88s or 5.13s

  • @MegaMarclar

    this is one of those debates that is on the level of the dodge/chevy/ford... Just like everything else, it's about how you use it. If you can keep the wheel speed down, keep it from bouncing, don't go full skinny pedal into a dead stop, then they 'can handle it'... but there comes a point where the actual physical strength of the tubes become the problem. D30 uses the same C, wheel bearings, brakes, tubes as a 44 for the most part. The best thing that you can do to one of these is put in some simple tube sleeves to keep the tube deflection down. C gussets and a good set of axles will make these things last. I've been part of this debate myself for many years.. and from what I have seen on the forums and groups, is that most ppl just abuse the shit out of their rigs, then blame the axle. The stuff your doing in the video is pretty mild, and it will probably do that for 10 years. The only benefit you would get from going to a 44 would be a bigger R/P and carrier.

    • @JeepTrailsandBarbells
      @JeepTrailsandBarbells  2 роки тому +2

      Exactly, you hit that right on the head. We are not doing anything crazy. But the bigger tires allow us to go over things without dragging or needing to find the "perfect line".
      Dont get me wrong, there are times we have had to have a tug from another rig or pull the winch line out to get up and over. But i will pull winch lines and lay tracks down before i full send and skinny pedal the axle until it brakes, then blame the axle for not being better lol. We have also had to bump here and there but nothing crazy at all.
      Like you said, not much the gain out of a 44 but a bigger R&P and a bigger axle shaft. so unless your getting a ultimate dana 44 with 35 splines and 1/4 or 5/16 tubing. Or a truss, your not gaining much. You will have a 8" ring and a 30 spline instead of a 27 spline and a 6.5 ring.
      Some people have some crazy amazing rigs that they dropped tons of money into. Then trailer them to the location play for a few days then trailer it back and almost never dive it on the road (if its still even street legal) i on the other hand have 2 jeeps that are our daily drivers and weekend warriors. But this works for us now, but when or if they brake ill fix them or upgrade. Until then why spend the money. 🤷‍♂️

One day we will get lockers but for now we have been pretty good at picking lines, but there has been a few times i had to get pulled or winched up. If i had a locker im pretty sure i would have been able to crawl up it. They really help with them big off set camber areas.

    Looks like you wheel in low traction conditions, the D30 should hold up fine.
