Whiskey Of They Year, or hype? Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C923 Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- Heaven Hill released the first ever ECBP that was less than 12 years old earlier in 2023, and this upset a lot of enthusiasts. The next release went the other direction and was over 13 years old. People are saying it is in the running for whiskey of the year. Is it just hype?

My favorite EC BP is still a local store pick. 129.2 proof that drinks like water and fantastic flavors.
Love EC C923. Bought 5 of them so far
It is worth a bunker.
The bartender at the HH distillery said there is actually a good portion of 18 yr in C923. I believe it based on how good it is.
Interesting. I wish they would just release all the dump percentages.
C923 is one that I have not spotted yet in the wild. I'm hoping that eventually I will get to try it! Thank you for doing this comparison.
Good luck in the rando!
I can’t wait to try the c923!
If you generally like ECBP I think you will love this one.
@@BourbonRealTalk ECPB is one of my favorites it’s actually one of the first two bourbons that I ever tried. Woodford was first
@@dbasportsfanatics Dang! If you started off with ECBP you had one hell of a start!
@@BourbonRealTalk a friend of mine introduced me.
ECBP is incredible...such a tasty pour and usually not marked up like crazy. Took me a month after release to find one, and then I was able to get a couple more. Very happy with this release!
Congrats on the finds! I also see ECBP as a value play. Cheers!
Excellent video and info! Anyone that sees my comments on BRTC knows ECBP has been my favorite offering since 2015 (HH is my personal favorite distillery). IMO, C923 is the best batch since C920. It is very tasty and I hope to find another. But I also wonder if the past 2yrs of just "good" ECBPs (again subjective opinion) are contributing to people's hyped view of this batch. It is delicious, but for me, it's still not at the same level of batches at/before C919. Cheers!
Interesting take. This is why I did it blind. I also don't watch any other channel's reviews so I am not influenced. I have had a ton of ECBP, but not many since 2020.
Would most definitely pick up a C923…if I ever see one.
It is a sold pour for a good price if you can find it.
Thanks for reviewing this!! I’ve been debating on whether I should search for it or not!
I think it is worth it if it isn't too much trouble.
This was a very good release. I backed it up
The favorite that I remember was C918. I wasn’t into Barrel Proof stuff before early 2018 so I never got to try pirate bottles or the whiskey of the year one (B517 I think). 🤞 for a sampler!
Good luck on the sampler!
I won a blantons and a Larceny C923 in my local store drawing and when i went to pick it up ECBP C923 was sitting on the shelf so i grabed that as well.
It is crazy that ECBP doesn't get as much love. Based on its quality price ratio I think it should be harder to find than it is.
Glad to hear this, I just picked up two bottles today! I never expected to actually see any of it.
It is good you got a back up. I think you will like it.
Just got C923 and didn't pay crazy price got it at MSRP here in Colorado so good does drink a bit hot 😋🥃but it's soooo good
Let you glass sit for a few min after you pour and give the volatile ethanol vapor that was released from pouring the glass dissipate.
I don’t run across any of those EC’s in my area. I did get a local store’s private barrel selection, but that’s as close as I can get. That sample pack would be a fantastic experience to ring in 2024. 👍
Good luck in the rando!
Still haven't gotten my hands on this one yet. It was pretty easy a couple years ago. One of the best value in bourbon especially at todays crazy pricing!
I tend to agree. It is one of the best ratios for quality/price/availability.
Looking forward to trying this myself. I will be receiving a bottle from a friend in a few days.
Hope you enjoy it!
I got a bottle and loved it so much had to hunt a few more down. Thankfully was able to find at or close to MSRP
This is one worth looking for a back up or two.
I’ve picked up B523 and it started very hot but it’s still good but compared to other ECBP not as good. I also have a 128proof 9 yr SiB, Private barrel store pick that’s is downright delicious. Still haven’t seen C923 here but once I do look out!
Good luck on the hunt!
Great review! I'm looking for the c923 currently! I still enjoy A123(only one I've found this year).
I don't think I have tried that one, but some other people said they liked it more than C923.
Keeping an eye out for C923, it's tough to find once word gets out.
Keep up the awesome videos!
Good luck!
If I see a bottle I want to bunker, my rule is to buy one bottle and let the other ones sit for a week to 10 days. if I go back and they are still on the shelf then I buy them up. I'm up to 4 ECBP C923s bunkered so far!!
That is a very thoughtful strategy!
Great review guys! This batch hasn’t hit my area yet but am eagerly waiting. Cheers 🥃
Fingers crossed!
Was lucky enough to find the C923 and after this video, I can't wait to crack it. Thanks guys!
Hope you love it! Cheers!
No one on UA-cam seems to be talking about the bottle variance with this batch.
There are two laser codes on the C923s here in Connecticut. Ones starting with A22 are good but feel tight on the nose and the sip is one big flavor dump (its fine but...)...the bottles that start with A23 are fantastic. Funky dusty sour cherry nose and a sip the has layered flavor progression. If you find one, check out the back for the codes, the difference is noticeable.
I am struggling to find info on how these large batched releases get put together: is there one mind blowingly huge tank that the thousand barrels are dumped and held before bottling or is is a set of two or more large vats that basically follow the same barrel make-up/formula?? Would be interested to know...
Typical batches for a super distillery like HH would be 200 or so barrels, which would produce as many as 32,000 bottles at cask strength. That is more than enough for a special release, so I would be surmised to learn that they are doing more than one batch for any of these releases. If you find any details on it shoot me an email randy@bourbonrealtalk.com
Def got 2x of C923 (1 public and 1 just for myself). Gonna be doing a C blind of 23, 22, 21. In my head Cs tend to be the best.
Interesting. I have never heard of a general letter preference. Good luck on your blind.
Enjoy all the content, thank you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks for helping us weed through the hype and make sure we weren't grabbing it because it's the new hotness.
This one is actually worth the hype at SRP.
You know how you can spot hype? 90% of the people saying "whiskey of the year" haven't said that phrase in 5 years. Of course ECBP is fantastic, and C923 is ECBP, so, duh, it's fantastic. But "whiskey of the year" was written by a marketer, not a drinker.
Point taken. Although I wrote the words as a click bait title so people would watch and I think anyone would also consider me a drinker. Maybe I am a marketer and a drinker? Come to think of it, I think anyone who produces youtube whiskey content is likely both a marketer and a drinker.
Try it before you hate. It’s freaking delicious. I’ve tried all the ECBPs in the last 4 years and this one takes the cake.
@@amealor63 What makes you think I don't have a bottle? Like I said it's fantastic, no hate. Normal people just don't say the phrase "whiskey of the year".
@@BourbonRealTalk I didn't mean that directed at you like that. Just that the reason you used the phrase even in a clickbaity way was because it's the phrase everyone is using, and that is what just doesn't feel authentic. I thought it was clear you were just referencing what we've all seen in a dozen places by now. It just feels like a marketer said "Here's a sample, we're calling it whiskey of the year" and so many people did that it's just part of the conversation, even for people who have never had a whiskey of the year. Marketing just works like that, and THAT part of it is what I see as the hype. But in my book, both you, and any ECBP are top notch, hype or no. Cheers.
Thanks for the video. I’ve seen a bit more ECBP on shelves recently (not C923). I’ll keep this in mind on future store trips.
C923 was great on fresh crack. Can't wait to have it again after it opens up a bit!
Cheers!
Love ecbp just landed a c923
Nice!
I haven’t been a huge fan of ECBP until C923, but it is my buddy’s favorite dram. A blind taste would be epic.
Do it! It is so much fun!
I loved the C923!
It is a solid pour!
Been looking for C923 but haven’t found one yet, hopefully will soon
Good luck on the hunt!
Ecbp is one of my favorite pour. Great stuff!
It is definitely one of the better quality price ratio pours IMO.
Finally got one today, @MSRP, and looking forward to trying it.
It is SOLID!
Love me some ECBP!! Store pics at higher proofs are awesome too!!
We have a ECBP SiB that is great. I also threw in a ECBP from 2017, 2018, and the B519 we talk about in the video. 5 two ounce samples in the pack.
I still haven’t seen one, either in store or in the wild, but I’ve got my eye out. I’d love to put it next to LBP B523.
LBPs are pretty good too. Good luck hunting.
C923 was good but i love a123 more
I have not tried that one. I will have to grab a sample from a friend.
@BourbonRealTalk its definitely worth it and also ya i felt b523 was just to nutty beamy flavor profile
I picked up 2 last week, even though they were $90. Yeah, FOMO. 1 to drink, 1 for the collection. I will definitely buy if i see at Costco.
Hope you enjoy it!
I've got my hands on the B, but no C923 yet. Although they are not so scarce here, it's has eluded me! Soon enough!
Good luck on the hunt!
Here's the obligatory comment... 🙂
Actually I don't regard it as an obligation. I love your channel, and I love Elijah Craig, but I've never had the chance to try any of the barrel proof releases, so if I do win I'll be a happy camper. 🥃
Thank you, and good luck in the rando.
I usually have a really hard time getting hyped bottles at retail but I did score a bottle of the c923. Haven't opened it yet though.
I think ECBP is one that doesn't go crazy on the secondary, so even though it is of legendary quality they are not the hardest to find when you decide you want one.
One down and three in the bunker. Its delicious. won one, got others for 100-120
This is a good one to bunker.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I think it is in the top three for sure
It is on the list for me for sure.
The only ecbp ive tried was this years B batch and if its really as underwhelming as everyone says then i cant wait to be impressed by the C batch
People complain about change. It isn't that much different than other batches. It is still a great pour.
Haven’t found C923. Hope to find it soon!
Good luck!
ECBP always a buy if available for me
I have not had one I didn't like. Some more than others, but always a good value.
Another good video , I like the B523 a little more .
Interesting. It goes to show that everyone's palate is different...and that is OK.
The B5 was OK but I’m really looking forward to trying to C923
As you could tell in the video we both preferred the C923.
I stopped to see if I can get lucky did get an ECSB private barrel barrel proof only at a nine year age statement 124.6 but I’ll take it.
C923 is a very solid bottle. Thanks for the great content.
Thanks for watching!
I look forward to ECBP release every year. A buy every year regardless of the review but I think the C923 release is the best C since C920. It is also the highest proof.
I have not tracked the variance in the different releases in years. I generally find them all to be good, so when I see one I don't hesitate to buy it.
Looking forward to finding a C923!
Good luck! It is one worth looking for.
I hope I can find one and not be at a museum price gouging.
Good luck!
I "accidentally" bought b522, and have been hooked on ECBP like a crackhead since.
It is certainly a value pour that is generally not too hard to find.
Still looking for C923
Good luck on the hunt.
Haven’t really seen it yet in my area but hoping to get my hands on one
Good luck!
It's a good'un! Luckily, I got a backup at retail.
Congrats!
I've loved C923 so far. A little hot at first, but once it had some time to sit out, I got all those deep caramel, chocolate flavors I love from ECBP
Giving it a min to let some of the volatile ethanol vapor leave the glass night be a good idea on this one.
Thanks for the content and quick history.
Our pleasure!
I didn't realize how lucky I was to run into one of these.
It is getting some good press for sure.
Awesome content! Love ECBP & BRTC!
We love you right back!
Hopefully can score a C923!! Great video!
Good luck!
I passed on a c923 a while ago because I was a little intimidated by the proof, after hearing all the hype I’m regretting it!
They didnt drink too hot for me. But all depends on what you usually drink.
I wouldn't regret it too much, we found bottle variance with this batch. There are two laser codes on the C923s here in Connecticut. Ones starting with A22 are good but feel tight with flavors...the bottles that start with A23 are fantastic. If you find one, check out the back for the codes, the difference is noticeable.
If you are not used to the higher proof stuff, there is a chance you would not have enjoyed it.
Still can’t find C923. I love my C922 but I’m almost out. 😮
There is still hope. I am hearing reports of people still finding it in the wild.
All EC BP’s are good, some are just better than others. C923 drinks too hot for me. I had bought a backup bottle due to all the hype. I prefer A123. 🥃
I heard a lot of things about A123, but didn't have any to compare C923 to.
So this is my first ecbp and holy moly is it hot
After you pour it let the glass sit for about 5 min before you pick it back up. It will give the ethanol vapor released by pouring a chance to dissipate.
Where did you guys find C923? I'm in the Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville area. Thanks.
It was Aaron's bottle, so I don't know where he got it.
I liked A123 on ice but C923 is better neat
Interesting. I have heard good things about A123, but I have not had it.
Great video. Thanks for always putting out good content.
Thanks for watching!
Would love to try those older ECBPs.
Good luck in the rando
Definitely one that needs a backup!
Agreed!
Great video! Love the C923, got a back up
Very nice!
I love my b523
It is still a good pour, even if it was a little controversial
@BourbonRealTalk it's my first ECBP lol so I don't know much more
@@darrellknight4110 This perfectly highlights the fact that when someone came in with no expectation they thought it was great. It is only the preconceived idea that makes people say it was bad.
I just posted on the BRTC group my collection
@@darrellknight4110 I went and checked it out! You are off to a great start! Solid collection!
Would you trade a Stagg for a chance to get a C923?
No, but my favorite pour of all time is GTS and it is easier form me to find ECBP than Stagg.
I am not a fan of B523 and I liked A123 better. I have not tried the C923 yet.
I am hearing good things about A123.
Great content. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
hoppsmoe say ECBP is always goooood
Cheers!
Love this comparison.. hopefully I get the chance to try the same! 😋
I hope so too!
should blind it to a stagg jr. those are over 200 secondary and ecbp isnt half that
It wouldn't work on me. I am so familiar with both profiles I would know which was which and I would be biased. Your point is solid though. Is Stagg really worth that much more, probably not based on flavor alone.
i agree the profiles are nothing close but to someone who isnt familiar would be good@@BourbonRealTalk
You realize it's just another way to get people to chase and buy, I mean what do you think first,..Huh I gotta buy it and try it. EC - MMark - 4R and (others are catching on)are all it competition on how many versions of there Bourbon they can manipulate in a year. Can you imagine paying $140/150 for(10)50 ml of test samples(like if you don't already have them or tasted). That don't get you anywhere, and say yeah there only 2 or 3 that I like anyways...nothing changed. Ohhh yeah they will discontinue it, then something that was discontinued 3 yrs ago comes back out the following year with a age statement . Also how are they double oaking/longer aging/casking/single batch/small batch/special reserving etc.etc...without having to double the size of there rickhouses. With my Bourbon, Rum, Irish, Scotch, Whiskey, Tequila, Gin, Brandys, Liqueurs, Mixers and a few choice Vodkas I have, I don't spend more than $70 on a bottle (95% of the time). Too many good Spirits to get caught up in just Bourbon. They got you by the wallet. You know what was voted the best bourbon in the world again @ $48/58 depending your location....Wild Turkey Rare Breed and they don't change a thing. Corn, barley, rye, wheat malted or unmalted.... is what it is. You have to ask yourself flavored spirits are still clear and dont look like what there labeled...huh,. Strong carmel, cherry, toffee, baking spices, leathery, etc. P.S they used tobacco to color and taste the whiskeys as well as other things, for decades in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and you don't even want to know about rum & vodka. Keep your money. Cheers 🥃
That is a pretty cynical view point, although you made some solid points. I respect your conclusion to concentrate your purchases on higher quality price ratio options, but I do not begrudge another person's purchase if it brings them joy.
I always get Pineapple Fanta off ECBP.
Interesting. I have a really hard time picking out the fruit note on ECBP.
@@BourbonRealTalk so did I until I was on a train to Chicago and one of my guys gave me a pineapple Fanta to drink. It immediately clicked. Not sure why I immediately made the association.
@@sideshowonacid I will check out some pineapple fanta and see if I can place it.
@@BourbonRealTalk it’s a unique flavor. I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan of the soda, but I now love the note in ECPB. Hopefully you can find it.
Unfortunately c923 was a miss for me. I got my hands on 4 to 5 bottles before I taste it based off the hype. It was just too overoaked and bitter. The B Batch was a bit of a let down as well. Luckily I was able to trade out all those other bottles people with nuts for them!
Interesting! Everyone's palate is different.
Why would you buy 5 bottles of something you never tried?
@@jrodge211Big fan of ECBP for years now and the hype got me and was able to get all of them at $69. FOMO. But good news is they all found a good home!
For my pallet C923 was the best since the C batch from 2019. I love that stuff I have four bottles right now.
@@jrodge211 When you are hooked into the whiskey enthusiast world there is little risk in buying a desirable bottle before you know if you love it. If you don't like it you can always rehome the bottles to someone else who is excited to have it, and recoup your money.
250👍
Cheers!
Oh my God bro how many of these WC C293 videos are going to be made? You all literally make the same content OVEr and OVER and OVER again. You all copy what each other are doing rather than create original content
First off, the people who make these types of comments are generally feeling bad and want others to feel bad too. If you are a troll, I love you and I am sorry for what ever difficulty you are facing.
If you are not a troll I would ask that you think before you type. I have plenty of videos of bottles that no one gives a crap about that I have done reviews of. 100% original content. You know who watches it? Me...when I am editing...and that is about it. You don't care about original content. You have never watched any of my reviews of bottles that you have never heard of, and neither has anyone else.
Also, the bottles that people are talking about are hard to come by. I don't always get to pick which bottles I can buy that people are actually searching for. So yes, I did a review of a bottle that some of the other channels did to. Do we always say the same thing? NO. You just have to get to know each channel's palate and decide who you can trust to follow.
