Rank 18*: Competitive Mode In Review

In this video I ramble for like 20 minutes about what's still wrong with Competitive Mode in TF2 as well as why 6v6 should remain the only format as opposed to Highlander. I also bash on the current 6v6 meta for being too favored towards generalist classes (it's all 5CP's fault).
In other words, I probably piss off a few of the more hardcore sections of the competitive community. I was almost scared of getting beat up, until I remembered that they make up about 4% of everyone in the world who plays TF2. Sad but true. But hey, maybe that will change in a few years when the TF Team finally sorts this stuff out.

Great video as always Dane. At this point we can only hope Matchmaking gets an overhaul. Until it becomes less toxic for anyone above rank 10, faceit is always a good option I've recently given a try. Highlander would indeed be a mess. I get my fill of it from stuff like tf2center. Highlander is fun but we definitely can't expect for it to be successful if 6s is barely functional. We can only hope. I'm at nearly 1K matchmaking matches and overhauling it would resurrect some of my interest in the game.
investing yourself in hope is a lost cause really, the next matchmaking update will be an infected band aid at best.
i'd rather have all the mechanics from competitive mode implemented into casual, is just absurd to think that all your 2k hours of casual and community servers suddenly mean nothing into competitive, Valve's competitive at that because the community has made a pretty good job at that
also is ironic how for a team of developers lazy enough to keep grabbing cosmetics and taunts from the community, they couldn't adopt rules that the community itself has developed over the years for a more proper competitive experience. i guess they want to re-invent the wheel, once more, only end up doing what they should have done at the start, and hear me on this, it won't happen tomorrow, or next month, it will take them a whole year before even touching or poaching competitive mode the way it's meant to be developed
Uncle, real question, when are you going to cut your losses and just switch to Overwatch?
from what i understand is he likes tf2 more than overwatch

I love playing valve competitive. 5 scouts 1 quick fix medic is lit.
I just wish they fix their bots. Make them expert mode bots, or making them stop taunting, or even make them stop switching class every three seconds.

I do too.
Oh, and hi!
Check out my comment.
Yeah. I was really into it when it came out, but after countless cases of "one player quit from the other team at the last minute of the match" I lost all hope for it. I didn't mind if my team didn't know what they should do and we were losing, even that gives you exp. But when you play a map for an hour and get nothing from it, it's really not worth it.
Ghostiification this particular issue is way less common nowadays. The ragequiters either realised that quiting loses more xp and stopped doing that, or were too mad and left.
Uncle Dane should have dropped comp long ago. Just like Valve.

Rewatching this in late 2020, the word “TFTeam” seems so far removed from reality it’s honestly sad. It’s also a real shame how unviable Highlander is, as it’s almost like how the game is meant to be played, you’re living out the comics and the short films, it is The Team. God I wish Valve would outsource TF2
I just want to be able to call the Medic
@@liberator101 honestly if you're a F2P you're better off just playing community servers until valve decides to give F2P players communication back or you become a P2P. I think almost every community server allows you to chat as a F2P. oh, and the bigger ones have actual anti cheats set up and they don't have bots, so that's cool. I recommend creators.tf or vanilla skial servers and then once you get bored of vanilla you can try different community modes like vs saxton hale, deathrun, jailbreak, zombie escape, x10 servers, etc. tons of fun to be had. at this point I play deathrun and vs saxton hale more than the vanilla game.
In my country (south Africa) nobody plays comp so we have a very small community of tf2 players, but some of us make our own comp servers and we call them mixes we can play 6v6 or Highlander and it removes all the problems with wait times and unbalance cause we choose 2 captains then they have a melee fight and who ever wins can pick first.

The main reason I haven't played any competitive matchmaking is because my three main classes are pyro, engie, and spy, which aren't that good on 5cp maps. That combined with the fact that I'm just average at playing as soldier, demo, medic, and scout definitely makes comp seem less appealing to me. I really do hope they add some more attack/defend and payload maps in the future for me to be really interested in playing competitive. Your video did a very good job explaining some of the problems with the current system and I agreed with a lot of what you said.
Well I mean pyro is great for comp rn since everyone is picking demo cuz of Lazys vid
@@kabobete3848 some demos NEVER learn
You didn't discuss the problem that lies within the sheer number of hackers in matchmaking either (some of which are levels 16+). This is another reason people refuse to play Valve's matchmaking gamemode.
TheSpyCrap I didn't even consider laughing at this comment I am disappointed and don't know if it's really you
since you need to spend money to enter tf2 competitive mode, you could just perma-ban / ip-ban / vac-ban every hacker so that they need to create a new account and buy back into tf2 comp every time they want to hack, which would discourage people from just spamming new accounts with 0 consequence
I completely agree. The past times I’ve played comp. there’s always one person at the top of the team with 5000 ping sniping through walls every second on every map. It’s stupid that they can’t be kicked even by their own team members who are literally helping the other team by reporting hackers.
Nightflyermike If valve ever adds rewards to comp, it may turn out to be a net profit or even worth it entirely to cheat on a comp match.
Hang on man, don't u play hacker v hacker? °^° jk idc at all ^_^
I disagree with the notion that it's a bad idea to create a Highlander game mode because it will split the community. Plenty of game developers (such as Riot Games) create multiple match-made game modes simply to give the playerbase options based on their own preferences and that's totally fine. However your point about terribly long Highlander queues is totally valid and is a much better argument for not having a Highlander queue. Good video as always, Dane.
Yea I agree with Slin. HL could be a fun alternative than just having 6v6
MR SLIN yeah but LOL has over a million players every day. TF2 has 70,000-.
+Tiara G honestly I'm suprised 6v6 ended up a thing than just hl, after all one of each class exactly for each team would be perfect balance, counters and all.
league of legends has an established ranked system that works perfectly a huge fan base and an extreme following to the main map that's why it can make a lot of other game modes and take risks knowing they still have their 5vs5 summoners rift map that everyone loves tf2 doesn't have that they need to get a ranked system that is liked and that works first and then try to make other stuff
+MR SLIN
Additionally there are two Match made systems for ranked play: 5v5 and 3v3. Literally no one plays the 3v3 gamemode in ranked. Wait times are literally six hours.
That and norms, which have a mmr system are just as fucked and whacky as pubs in TF2
Here's the problem with 6v6 valve comp: You get one noob who wants to go spy and there, as you say, is 20% or your team gone.
1/6 is 20%?
The fact that Spy is so useless is a problem
sniper can do what spy can do better, he's pretty useless against competent players
Starykrow
I know im late but they just watched one starykrow video and all of a sudden they think that they can play spy and be useful
It's always a joy to see your thoughts on stuff in the tf2 community, just like your Casual video I really liked this video. And after watching the video and thinking about it myself. I completley agree with you dane. the comp. mode was fun when I first played it, but even though I never had problems finding a game in casual usually around 2-6 seconds. But I am eager to see how Valve will handle the 6 v 6 balance with the weapons and all that.
I'm surprised you (and a fair amount of TF2 you tubers) haven't taken a break from the game. Not quitting, just taking a break. I did it and I'm super happy I did. I came back recently and the nostalgia and fun and just different gameplay reminded me why I love this game (also I spent a hundred dollars so I kind of have to keep playing it). I'm just super proud of you guys and happy for keeping me interested.
Also, question: will you make more music?
I guess that it all depends on the person, some people just don't get bored of TF2 no matter for how long they've played it, some people take breaks every once in a while and some people quit like at
That's the same with me. I've been playing overwatch. No, I haven't quit, its just overwatch more exciting because I'm getting better at the characters.
I've not played since 23.12.16.. I used to play atleast every other day (mostly just every day for 2-3 hours) for maybe four years, but then I got a bit bored. I don't think I've quit the game totally, I'm just having a break. Though I don't know how long break I'm going to have. Been playing bad company 2 online and atm that is exactly what I need and want (though some times when using rpg I wish I could just rocket jump across the map :D). I have two tickets for mvm and a backpack networth of +200€ waiting for me when I get back to it, but I have no rush.
Ryan Burke SAME I stopped playing for csgo and overwatch and when I came back although competitive was dead I had so much fun pub stomping lol

1. Add the ability to kick people
2. Make the leveling system like CS:GO's (Don't start at level 1)
3. Add more maps and the ability to choose what maps/game modes you wish to queue for (and yes, include CTF)
4. Nerf the weapons, don't put weapon limits
5. Ditch the shitty names for the ranks and just keep them simple (Maybe Wood, Gold, etc. like in the beta)
6. Stay 6v6
7. Improve matchmaking
Brickiest Brick an actual matchmaking system similar to cs go has been announced by valve
Brickiest Brick If you let people choose the maps, it will ruin more unpopular maps and the few people who want to play them.

What if there was comp. mvm?
i'd do some competitive mvm
Psychrozen, Rewards maeby should be like a boosted chance to get an aussie.
Psychrozen they're pissy because of people not knowing what to do to win
Chances are, competitive mvm would be for premium players only unlimited use like regular comp, so maybe they could make a silver set of weapons as the reward that people will try to obtain with an unusual's chance of dropping, that'd look pretty badass if you ask me. Maybe your chances of getting these silver weapons would get higher the better you do as a team as well as personal stats, along with the map difficulty. The price for these weapons would most likely be dramatically lower than australiums due to getting them in a mode you don't have to pay to play each time.
13:33
They're just vibin
16:53 Can't you just solve the problem of the one class limit by making it possible to call a vote to switch out someone's class?
VOTE: Good_Medic wants to switch with Some_6_year_old
1. Yes, please switch
2. No, Some_6_year_old is fine at his current class, which is medic
If the vote succeeds, the player who takes over medic respawns at base instantly while the other player is sent to the class selection screen. You can also make it so this can only happen every 2 or 3 minutes to discourage people from using this system to get instant respawns.
It isn't as obvious which person is better at which class, plus, way too many people would quit in the middle of a game because they can't play their favourite class

LaSombra CS:GO the expert bots in csgo are fine, the comp ones are easy and that's bad, but the cs s ones are just a lesson in how having worse bots is better than having amazing op bots
but they STILL better than most tf2 players
I Do like your video Dane, but as a highlander player I don't agree with some of your points, for your saying that a kill is not as good in highlander than it is in 6v6, but what you forgot to realize was that if you kill their class, they won't be any more players as that class for their re-spawn time, for instance, you managed to kill their sniper, well not only does your sniper have any pressure of looking out for enemy snipers for a while so they can focus for those picks on pockets, medics, engies etc. while not focusing for a sniper which eases out the game for meds and other classes as they can peek sightlines not without worrying if that top ranked UGC platinum sniper will quickscope them, making it easier to push. this can be said for most classes (killing the med means no uber, killing pyro helps with spies and engie nests, etc.) but yes, if HL is added at the current state of comp, it wouldn't work.
You can't argue with God.
When ur enemy team has 2 snipers in 6vs6 you have already won anyways
Dis is true quality content hier Dane, and also a great time to show how you play.
I've played against a team of like 4 heavies and 2 medics consistently since the update came out. Like at least 2 or 3 times every week. :^(

That sounds horrible. Finding a good match in Causal is rare too. Sometimes you get lucky and find a good team. And other times you just find script kiddies and friendlies.
sounds like then you'd just go sniper or spy and have a field day
Son of Tiamat I've played tons of casual matches and to be fair, once your a godlike sniper or soldier you can legit carry your entire team easily. One time I dropped 100+ kills on payload lol
Sometimes, yes. I've carried whole teams myself. But it's not something I can do consistently, nor do I want to always have to be the one carrying. I like helping competent team mates and being help by them.

I dont really watch your videos Dane, but I've gotta say this one is flawless and sums up a bunch of things that need to be fixed and will improve competitirve TF2. Hopefully the competitive community will become bigger because this is something I really enjoy.
I've been out of TF2 for a while but these are the solutions I'd propose to help with balancing in team comps:
1) Instead of class limits, implement role limits instead. A role limit of two. That way every team has to take two offense, defense, and support heroes. While it WOULD lock players into a respective role, I think it would actually make a counter picking system a little more interesting. For example, an enemy Spy is causing you grief so you have to choose between giving up either your Scout or Soldier in order to counter pick to a Pyro. You can't just switch off your Sniper to something that works better as a counter and your picks suddenly become a LOT more important. It would also discourage class stacking as you'd have to give up certain classes which are otherwise essential to run two of another. Specifically this addresses the issue of Scout and Soldier who are both very good when stacked. This would also up the pickrate of pick classes, as teams would be more likely to run one.
2) To address the issue of stacking Medics, have it so Medic healing does not stack, and if a class is being healed by multiple Medics they only draw the healing and overheal of the first Medic to connect their beam, likewise that Medic is the only one charging an uber off of them. While two Medics would still remain effective to SOME degree, you'd be giving up some potentially high damage output from a Spy or a Sniper in order to run the second one, which wouldn't quite benefit you as much.
3) As for 5CP, have it so instead of time being added to the timer each time a point is capped, have the timer reset to an arbitrary amount of time (say 10 minutes) when the center control point is captured. This would discourage teams with point advantage from camping and defending and encourage them to push far more aggressively, while still giving them some time to set up some sort of backline defense in case they get pushed back. It would also encourage teams without point advantage to push back a lot more aggressively as well, as they'd need to capture back mid within the remainder of the other teams alloted time before being given their alloted time for taking point advantage.
4) Just the very nature of CTF now means it's going to be a stalemate. The game needs to punish players that don't make an effort to try and capture the objective but instead choose to just turtle. MVM had a feature that could probably be adapted into CTF, where if the bomb carrier wasn't killed, they'd slowly get more and more buffs. This was mainly to avoid people cheesing it by not actively trying to kill the bomb carrier and instead trying to stall them for the duration of the wave, with Pyro or slowing mad milk, or something of the sort. Obviously buffing the briefcase carrier wouldn't solve anything, but a system whereby the game gets easier if you're more aggressive would be incredibly useful. Perhaps giving the leading team a large respawn time advantage (if that's not already a feature), or perhaps having it so capturing the enemy intellegence will return your intellegence to the base if it's not there. Idk, without overhauling the entire concept this one would be hard.
this is genius! we need to raise this comment for more people to see. a role limit of 2 is an amazing idea, good thinking
You're still able to run Soldier, Scout, Demoman, giving you three high mobility characters (4 if you decide to run two Demos). Granted in this situation it's likely that the Demo would fulfil more of a pocket role as the, well, pocket, previously has due to soldier's mobility, but you can't rule out that it's certainly an option. Regardless, as I said, I've been away from TF2 for a while and even when I did play 6s, I was mainly playing pocket or offclassing, so take my ideas with a pinch of salt.

I used to be pro-highlander for Valve's competitive mode, but hearing your thoughts actually made me change my mind and I fully understand your reasons. It kind of makes me excited to see what Valve's comp mode will actually matures into. So thanks for this video 😁
Dane, I have two accounts at rank 18, and I peaked at around 13th in the world in the global rankings before, and for a while, I wasn't able to queue into any games whatsoever. However, I have been able to play over the past few days. It may be worth giving it an attempt again.
What's funny is that after I recorded the commentary for this video, I started being able to queue into matches again (although my friend needed to be on an alt account that was a lot lower of a rank for it to work). ONLY took us about 5 to 10 minutes to find a game, which is sadly amazing - but hey, at least we got to play! I would honestly only play Competitive Mode in TF2 if it was as consistently available as Casual Mode is (and if the rankings worked correctly).

i know, but first off, i cant stop playing warframe. ( :P ) and secondly i dont find it that fun to play. i have played it, but it was kinda boring... with the stock stuff?
14:00 Don't agree with this at all. A weapon that's not dangerous when used by a professional against professionals can absolutely be dangerous when used by a casual against casuals. The canonical example is any weapon or tactic that is "easy to use but hard to counter": High level players all meet the skill threshold to counter the tactic so it doesn't impact high level play, but low level players die to it in droves even when it is used by other low level players. This leads to pubs turning into an environment where everyone uses the weapon or tactic which prevents people from actually becoming better and progressing to high level play, or prevents them from enjoying low level play if they only play casually.
What I would say is that high level play being balanced is NECESSARY for overall game balance to be achieved, but not SUFFICIENT.

How are you using custom animations in valve servers??
A good way to go about class limits would be, as you said, 1 on some classes, 2 on others, perhaps a limit of 1 on heavy, medic, soldier, scout, and demo, others can get 2, having 2 snipers or 2 spies wouldn't end the world since a single game being bad wouldn't mean much if 3 others were fine.
However another way to fix this would be to toss out 6v6 and try a 7v7 system, allowing for a harder push, slightly less impact per person, but much more impact as a team.

i think the current format of Prolander 7 v 7 is the best format of cometitive TF2 we ve ever got it si diverse and 1 of each class (not all the classes tho) so i think 7v7 is the best and most interesting format so far.
I first want to congratulate you on nearly reaching level 18, you did what I couldn't, but I would like to rebuttal your point on Weapon balance: 13:45. Weapons such as The Vaccinator, Quick Fix, or mad milk are fine in pubs, yet are competitively banned for their use. While I'm not opposed to weapons being reworked to fit both formats, the inherent number of players will always be a factor that always has an effect on the viability of weapons.
Hey Dane, so I was wondering something. I am a huge fan of your videos (I main engineer) but I was thinking of something. Your videos where you talk about weapons are great, so are your engineering 101 vids. But I was wondering if you would make an engineering 101 where you talk about picking your fights depending on health, classes and your weapons you're using. I would greatly appreciate this as an engie main who is trying to get into competitive. Anyways, great video with great points and I'm a huge fan.
WHOO
PLACEMENT MATCHES GOODBYE FRESH MEAT
Nathan Vincent bye dude, hope i wont be matched with rank 10's anymore
Also, competitive should have some sort of reward or season prize system or something, so it'll encourage players to go up the ranks
exactly, maybe a skin-crate system wich drops as you up your rank
Overwatch tried that system and the developers said it was a terrible decision because people will only play ranked for items not to improve or climb
@@Mebble who cares?more people buy comp-more money for valve. more money for valve-MORE TF2 UPDATES WOOOO
pretty helpful thx dane
"I almost cut my self on that edge valve." ~ Uncle Dane 2017. I died xD
I still think that the matchmaking system will be dead unless there is a gui change that actively encourages people at higher casual level s to try out competitive. This plus the addition of elo would make me much more willing to play competitive. I also really like the idea of an expanded map pool though i';ve already experienced this as for some reason a majority of my matches have been on payload maps where more diverse classes can play. Please volvo make pyro more competitively viable in a way that doesn't make him overpowered in pubs PLEASE.
Does Uncle Dane smurf on these videos? It seems like he only plays against hatless f2ps...
Don Glover Casual is just hatless f2ps
You didn't even watched the video for its message.
He SAID that he didn't had enought gameplay of him playing in Comp.
+Your Nightmare That doesn't really answer his question...
Spooder man No MMR, Elo rating. It's pretty much put every players together until the match coordinator feels fit. Let say you're rank 12, but the enemy team is full of rank 5 or 4. So you need to have players from rank 2 to 3, even 1 to make up for your high rank. Flawed, stupid and meaningless.
I'm pretty sure you can't play competitive if you're F2P.
4:20 the scouts lag XD
2:37 ah yes

Ancle Dan is a verly gud competitive man.
Ancle Dan is goo engi men.
But I thought valve never messed up...
OMERANGE That's what happens when you went from being a game company to being something else entirely
OMERANGE HAHAHAHA no
OMERANGE YEP, VALVE RECENTLY RELEASED A CSGO MAP CALLED CANALS AND IT DOESNT HAVE GLITCHES
comment guy is it that good? I've never played it yet, going home soon.
comment guy
The map did have glitches. There were several parts that made bomb stuck in several places along with an OP skybox glitch people could have use. Luckily the CSGO team is a large enough to patch those things in 2 days.
i love how the old nintendo music reminds me of my childhood
I think it's crazy how many thoughts you put into this. Like, 10000% the thoughts anyone at Valve will ever put into this. They should just outsource further developments to the community.
I find that 5 cp is pretty fun in competitive, but I do wish there were more koth maps. Still very competitive and those were the maps I generally had the most fun on. koth maps are what competitive needs. Also, a refined match finding system should be implemented since TF2 doesn't have a player base as large as cs:go, the elo system fails to be effective because the high rank players are spread so thin over a much smaller community. With the declining player base TF2 is suffering from right now, I am lead to believe that the competitive mode will fail regardless, not because it's bad, but because TF2 cannot support such a large rank system for a much smaller community.
I've only had a fiew solid team pubs, and about half of them are only when Reno's helping me by being a pybro. I wish they ranked casual or had some type of "seriousness" slider or just something so im not put in with a brainless team against a brainless team.
It's called pubs
I'm just hypnotized by the bouncing shotgun cursor, like you're trying to push the bullets into the enemy
I don't see many comp frag movies of engineers, good video Dane!
Wait, it wasn't meant to be a frag movie?
pootis approves

How to get on the small shack on Borneo
But really, I really hope that the TF2 Team manage to fix and balance Competitive Matchmaking while buffing and nerfing all the classes and weapons to make it balanced for Competitive, cause at the moment it's kinda unplayable since you're put against other people that are a higher rank or even put against a hacker that you can't kicked since there's no vote kicking system.

In my first mvm game, there was a really good spy sapping almost every bots in a single choke point, it was amazing.
In reply towards 1 limit not working or other limits not working because people could grief by not switching; They could add a voting system (similar to kicking a player and so-on) where if you attempt to join a class which someone else is currently playing, it throws out a vote to your team on if you should swap, as well as a secondary vote sent to the owner of that class if they want to switch, which if accepted would over-rule the team vote. The vote would appear in a format to not block too much of the screen or cause a distraction so people cannot abuse the vote its self to distract the entire team. Then they should also add a voting system that allows you to kick people IF they haven't killed an enemy player within a set period of time, preventing people from just sitting in spawn and not playing the required class. (Same would apply to Medic but instead counting towards assists and healing of teammates in the set period of time).
What hud do you use?
VinnyClockMan budhud i think

Valve: we are introducing competitive mode
*competitive mode locked on default - pay money to play*
Class limit of 1 for Medics, heavies, engies, and demos. Class limit of 2 for everyone else.
I remember back in the day I played on a 12v12 server that had class limits that varied based on what class it was (2 for medics, heavies, etc. and 3 for everyone else) and it worked just fine.
I've won matches with 5 scouts and one medic on granary (two rolls)
And round as all pyro which we rolled, lost a second, and had a great third.
This video makes me appreciate the 5v5 no character switching setup in Paladins, I've baisicly given up on TF2's current version in favour of it. (I would be playing Overwatch but I'm cheap)
At 9:19 the medic has the username "Ni**aFromJustDance"
even if they do fix it, no one is going to play it. It tarnished itself to the point of no return.
ya and gues tf2 will never be a real esport either
34marmarmar I still plays it, and will continue to do so as I find comp fun, flawed or not.
People that try to join after the fix will have a nucleus of players to join to, and hopefully we can grow in size when the fix drops.
20:14 Uncle laying down the law.
3 Yeras after this, oh man. The memories of my team going all scout as a meme and winning twice in a row
