well, with the way valve works, there are a bunch of teams that work kind of independently from each-other on different things. The dota 2 team is separate from the Steam team, which is separate from the VR team, etc.

Update in 2019: TF2 team had a recent interview on July 2019 and stated that the thing about hiring programmers and making the other Valve teams like CSGO and Dota jealous is just false and there is nothing wrong, just right now TF2 is not in high priority so we must wait until the day Valve decides to release the Heavy Update
Well now that Half Life Life Alyx is out (My other favorite game series), hopefully they will start focusing on TF2 more, as HL:A has been in development for the better part of 5 YEARS now, although I'd assume that they will still work on bug fixes and exploits for Half Life Alyx before moving back on to TF2 (which won't take nearly as long), as HL:A is most likely still high priority. Though we will most likely see a return to TF2 (Hopefully)

Loth A Sure, artists and sound editors are important but the main work in an update is made by the programmers. They are the ones that are going to get everything to work and also they are the ones that fix the bugs that are in the game. As seen in the tf2 wiki almost all of the weapons have a couple of minor or major bugs that are being very slowly fixed because there are only 5 programmers in the TF team

a DAAAAAAAAANE THEORY. i hope that tf2 gets more love, moreso to being a fun game and that competitive can be sepperated from the fun part. while i get that some people think comp is fun, i personally dont feel like having a race to see who is the best at a game. i want to pick it up, play & be decent at it, by no means the best. tf2 seems to be wanting to go comp ever since overwatch was announced by blizzard. dont be overwatch / CS:GO there is no shortage of comp shooters. pls tf2.....

Overwatch had nothing to do with Tf2's competetive. The community asked for it for YEARS, and Valve deliverd it (even tho it sucks). They never cared about Overwatch because it's a different game.
This really explains a lot, I just wish that this video got more popular so that everybody got an explanation for why tf2 updates come out so infrequently. Then everyone would probably be more patient knowing about this
glad to hear that the TF team is actually passionate about the game, that's encouraging at least. Sad to hear that one of the best shooters ever released on planet earth is basically in the hands of a reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaally small indie dev team despite being owned by one of the most profitable game publishers in the known universe.
TF2 has had its time. Even the F2P update years ago seemed like a last second pitch to squeeze as much money as they could out of it. If they thought they could get a lot more traffic and money they would have a dozen programmers, the market just isn't there. TF2 is outdated, unbalanced due to the addition of hundreds of guns, barely any new players coming in, and old players moving on to Overwatch. I mean I started playing on release in 07 for about 8 years, I'm just not wearing rose tinted glasses. TF2 lost a huge part of its main magic with the addition of new weapons. Even the first set of new weapons produced critical balancing problems, like the pyro being able to out range a sniper.
Tek Rekts that doesn't sound right , 70% of the people I see everyday are new players with 30mins-2 hours , every match has at least 1 experienced player other than me , I have 200+ games played on casual btw (not including mvm or community servers) , I think the game is just changing that's all .
I think the problem is that tf2 is so old, it now has 3 clearly definable "generations" of players for lack of a better term. you have gen1 old farts who played during launch before the free to play days, and once tf2 went free to play, it just wasn't the same game for them anymore. then you have slightly newer, but still veteran players like myself who have been playing ever since the game went free to play, so that's the game we know and love, and for us, meet your match and other recent updates to how server browsing does (or more acurately doesn't) work changed the game to the point where we no longer recognize it, so we just play more recent games like overwatch, or paladins because they capture a small spark of the nostalgia we feel for the game we once loved, but they have a level of polish, and resources at their disposal that the (apparently four man) dev team for tf2 just can't keep up with anymore. and then you have generation 3 which are the even newer players who only started playing tf2 once they heard about it because overwatch was compared to it. they don't have any sentimental attachments to the tf2 of yesteryear, and so they are perfectly content running around on plr maps as smg sniper crouch walking, and trying to get headshots not understanding what the text "random crit" means. TF2 was, is, and always will be at the top of my list of favorite multiplayer games of all time, and *nothing* will ever feel as rewarding as a really good round of soldier, but until valve gets their shit together, and starts to care about this game again, I'm just going to have to settle for playing flankers like evie and maeve in paladins, because that's the closest experience I'm going to have to my "good ol' days" as a soldier main frequenting servers with regulars who were active members of the highlander and 6s scene.
Sonic Shoe valve should really let the TF team do requests higher up and the community can vote if those should be passed to happen (like a larger team)

Valve has BY FAR one of the healthiest sounding work environments I’ve heard about. If someone doesn’t want to work on TF2 then don’t make them. That’s how you get employees who care about their work. I care about Valve and Valves employees as people, not just about my game. If people don’t want to work on TF2, a 13 year old game, then so it is.

Assuming the minimum wage is $10 for their place of employment, that cracks down to $160 per hour, or $1280 per day. Keys are worth $2.50. Meaning, for every day there's development being done on TF2, there is at least 512 keys worth of dollars being paid out in wages. Now let's make some safe assumptions. Let's say that some of them (namely the programmers) are being paid upwards of $23 or $25. Assume there's a few assistants on the team who might be making $10 to $15. Sprinkle in a few people in between for wages, and you might be okay with saying the average team member makes $15/hour. That would mean 768 keys worth of dollars being paid out in wages per day! And that doesn't even include people outside the team that are necessary to keep it running, i.e. Human Resources, computer/office suppliers, or upper management's occasional man hour or two. Those extravagant unboxing-100-crates videos you see, are really just funding the entire team for a third of a work day.

Overwatch had nothing to do with Tf2's competetive. The community asked for it for YEARS, and Valve deliverd it (even tho it sucks). They never cared about Overwatch because it's a different game.

glad to hear that the TF team is actually passionate about the game, that's encouraging at least. Sad to hear that one of the best shooters ever released on planet earth is basically in the hands of a reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaally small indie dev team despite being owned by one of the most profitable game publishers in the known universe.
TF2 has had its time. Even the F2P update years ago seemed like a last second pitch to squeeze as much money as they could out of it. If they thought they could get a lot more traffic and money they would have a dozen programmers, the market just isn't there. TF2 is outdated, unbalanced due to the addition of hundreds of guns, barely any new players coming in, and old players moving on to Overwatch. I mean I started playing on release in 07 for about 8 years, I'm just not wearing rose tinted glasses. TF2 lost a huge part of its main magic with the addition of new weapons. Even the first set of new weapons produced critical balancing problems, like the pyro being able to out range a sniper.
Tek Rekts that doesn't sound right , 70% of the people I see everyday are new players with 30mins-2 hours , every match has at least 1 experienced player other than me , I have 200+ games played on casual btw (not including mvm or community servers) , I think the game is just changing that's all .
I think the problem is that tf2 is so old, it now has 3 clearly definable "generations" of players for lack of a better term.
you have gen1 old farts who played during launch before the free to play days, and once tf2 went free to play, it just wasn't the same game for them anymore.
then you have slightly newer, but still veteran players like myself who have been playing ever since the game went free to play, so that's the game we know and love, and for us, meet your match and other recent updates to how server browsing does (or more acurately doesn't) work changed the game to the point where we no longer recognize it, so we just play more recent games like overwatch, or paladins because they capture a small spark of the nostalgia we feel for the game we once loved, but they have a level of polish, and resources at their disposal that the (apparently four man) dev team for tf2 just can't keep up with anymore.
and then you have generation 3 which are the even newer players who only started playing tf2 once they heard about it because overwatch was compared to it. they don't have any sentimental attachments to the tf2 of yesteryear, and so they are perfectly content running around on plr maps as smg sniper crouch walking, and trying to get headshots not understanding what the text "random crit" means.
TF2 was, is, and always will be at the top of my list of favorite multiplayer games of all time, and *nothing* will ever feel as rewarding as a really good round of soldier, but until valve gets their shit together, and starts to care about this game again, I'm just going to have to settle for playing flankers like evie and maeve in paladins, because that's the closest experience I'm going to have to my "good ol' days" as a soldier main frequenting servers with regulars who were active members of the highlander and 6s scene.
Sonic Shoe it's still the same game. plus who even played valve servers anyway they didn't let you use custom models and sounds.
Sonic Shoe valve should really let the TF team do requests higher up and the community can vote if those should be passed to happen (like a larger team)

Valve has BY FAR one of the healthiest sounding work environments I’ve heard about. If someone doesn’t want to work on TF2 then don’t make them. That’s how you get employees who care about their work. I care about Valve and Valves employees as people, not just about my game. If people don’t want to work on TF2, a 13 year old game, then so it is.

Well if there's a team of 16 people on TF2's development, we've got some numbers to work with. Assuming the minimum wage is $10 for their place of employment, that cracks down to $160 per hour, or $1280 per day. Keys are worth $2.50. Meaning, for every day there's development being done on TF2, there is at least 512 keys worth of dollars being paid out in wages.
Now let's make some safe assumptions. Let's say that some of them (namely the programmers) are being paid upwards of $23 or $25. Assume there's a few assistants on the team who might be making $10 to $15. Sprinkle in a few people in between for wages, and you might be okay with saying the average team member makes $15/hour.
That would mean 768 keys worth of dollars being paid out in wages per day! And that doesn't even include people outside the team that are necessary to keep it running, i.e. Human Resources, computer/office suppliers, or upper management's occasional man hour or two.
Those extravagant unboxing-100-crates videos you see, are really just funding the entire team for a third of a work day.
