I could shift into gear on my 2006 Explorer and sometimes all seemed fine. Then after sitting awhile I'd try it again and when shifting into any gear it just acts like it's in neutral. Nothing engages and you can roll the car even if it's in reverse, drive, low, etc. We had the tranny rebuilt and it still does the same thing, off and on. Do you think bad coils could cause that big of an issue? Great video, Thanks!
I wonder if you might also have a shielding issue with the CAN bus cableing (from an EE that was on an early SAE J-1939 committie). EMI could couple in easier if proper shielding and grounds are not in place on the data bus. J1939 is pretty robust, but could be marginalized with flaky wiring. Looks like the CAN bus was a pretty good EMI detector in this case. Nice work on the fix and very logical with troubleshooting on this job. Sam W3OHM
