As great as this performance is I feel this is not Brent’s best vocal rendition of this song. It seems he’s most definitely protecting his voice here because in the original version he goes all out. You should definitely check out the album version both with the band, which is a more hard hitting tune and specifically the acoustic version. Those are where he sounds best imo.

In this version, Brent is singing in a safe way to keep from straining his vocals. I'm not saying this is a bad version but it definitely is not as heart felt as the original studio version. You have to hear the studio version to feel the emotion of the lyrics.

I think he’s singing to his instrumentation. It’s acoustic. He clearly pushes it at will during this song. He’s grown so much since that album was released. I’ve seen them play this live fully plugged in and electric and he pushes it just fine.

They have a live version of save me, just the singer and a guitar player in a white room and his voice seems to be a little worn out. The way he sings around it and through it makes the song even better to me. Worth a dig to find, though I feel like it would be at the top of a UA-cam search

I actually Prefer the studio version.. some songs are just soo hard to recreate live, they have to rework it for live performance, especially an intimate acoustic setting. I'm sure there is just some artistic changes that they do like this video obviously has, but a lot has to do with saving the voice for consistency through the whole performance. Plus these are usually recorded for DVD release or Box Set. I seen Shinedown live a long time ago and his voice was not in top shape then and had to make compromises just to make it through the whole set. They still rocked tho!!!

Elizabeth recommend finding the original studio version and giving it a listen. In this live video he's taking plenty of liberties with the chord structures of his vocals as they relate to the rest of the music. The original is almost completely different from a harmonic standpoint.

As a FOH sound engineer I dearly appreciate his dynamics. By understanding his db range he moves the microphone diaphragm accordingly. Which in turn helps the FOH not have to add a lot of compression and limiting in order to keep a smooth mix. When he knows he is going to push more air he positions the mic off axis. Which also acts a bit as a de-esser and accentuates lower frequencies. This gives the passage more consistent "body" without compromising the vocal position within the mix..
    Superb awareness and professionalism.

I listened to this song a lot after I got discharged from the Army and came home, at that point I felt like this song was wrote for me in some way cause it spoke my feelings at the time. Things could still be better today but so much better than the shape I was in back then. Thankful for that, just gotta keep moving forward

I like other versions, especially the acoustic one, better then this version bit Shinedown is always good. I love the nasal in his voice. More Shinedown please. Always more Shinedown

I've heard this song so many times, and the end of this live version gave me goosebumps - Shinedown is incredible!

It is so great to see someone who appreciates how awesome Brent is as a vocalist and lyricist. I love to see your reaction and get your take on why it’s awesome. The thing that Brent has is the most beautiful tone no matter what he’s singing. Goosebump inducing! Please do more Shinedown songs! I suggest Monsters, Second Chance, Daylight, Symptom of Being Human, and Sound of Madness to begin with. Also Unchained Melody and Someone Like You from his ‘side project’ with Zach, Smith & Myers. Love your show!
