  • Braces Explained: Power Chains
    In this video, I will be answer the question of "what are power chains?" and "what are they used for?" Power chains are like rubber bands that attach to individual teeth and are used to close space or to hold together teeth where space has already been closed. They have shape memory, much like a rubber band, and once they are stretched between two teeth, or a group of teeth, they want to return to their original shape and therefore add a tension force to the teeth. Over time, your teeth adapt to these forces and begin to come closer together! Once we have all the teeth together, power chains can be used to hold the teeth the way they are, such that spaces do not re-open!

    I actually love power chains! They make your teeth sore for about 2 days, but they really do make a difference. They make your braces much more vibrant as well if you get a fun color! I've had my braces for almost a year now, and I've got a little more than half a year to go, but I actually don't mind them. :)

      Hey man! Great vids. I just wanna ask that i got braces 2 weeks ago. I have gap in my two front teeth and i have two teeth grown behind the normal teeth line in the far back of two sides. So yesterday my orthodontist gave me power chains for my font two teeth only. But you mentioned that power chain is used at the last stage or later stage in the process. So is that normal to use power chains this early in the process?

    • @laqueshagenieangelbaby1021
      @laqueshagenieangelbaby1021 4 роки тому

      Mainul Hossain i’m pretty sure you only need to wait a bit is so the teeth can line up before pulling them together, so if it’s only your front teeth and they are straight then it’s fine

    Hi Dr. Asatrian,
    First, I'd like to say thank you and thank God for doctors like you who are willing to go all out and make this information accessible and understandable to the public. I don't have the most communicative orthodontics team, so not only has getting braces been scary, but extremely confusing and frustrating. But thanks to your informative videos so far, I've been able to get a much better understanding! In fact, it was through this video where I learned what the little bands around each bracket were called and their purpose. However, I do have more questions about them:
    You mentioned that ligatures were used to anchor the teeth to the wire, but why do they have to be continuously changed out? At least mine have been getting changed every month. Does each change create more pressure for the teeth to move, because after every visit, my teeth are always a little sore/sensitive. How does this happen? And I've seen other UA-camrs chronicle their braces journey in which they talk about getting their wires changed. But, that has yet to happen to me. What is the point of changing out the wire?

    • @DrGregAsatrian
      @DrGregAsatrian  6 років тому +21

      Hello! Thank you so much for those kind words! I really appreciate you all for contributing and helping make these videos / pages more fruitful! The rings are changed each time because they tend to loosen over time / collect bacteria & get gross. Regarding the wire changes, this is dependent on the wire used. Some orthodontist use long-acting wires that work over a long period of time to straighten your teeth while others use a sequence of shorter-acting wires. Hope that helps some!

    I’ve had a power chain on my front two teeth twice since I had my braces put on in February. My two front teeth were always really sore for at least two days after. So sore to the point where if my teeth clacked, I was in tears. Gargling with pink Himalayan salt & taking ibuprofen helped a lot. My front gap is almost closed. Now, I have small gaps in between my other teeth and I got a full power chain on all my upper teeth today. I feel like I’m laying in the casket with my hands folded. My mouth hurts so bad! I’m just holding my mouth. I hope this pain doesn’t last too long since it’s a full power chain. Who knew braces were this painful! I still say none of this hurts more than when you first get them put on. My mouth hurt everyday for two months! 😖😫😫

    I love your videos! They are really interesting. I've had damon braces for just over 2 weeks now. And damon braces are becomimg more and more common on the NHS. I got mine for free thanks to living in England. But I have noticed a difference between British and American treatment. Molar bands aren't really used in England. I don't have them for the back of my braces nor do any of my friends. The wire just slots into the back brackets. But it seems they are always used with American treatment. I just found it interesting because the results are really good despite the difference.

    Nice Greg, It's good to know I appreciate what you do in these videos, I have a question, probably doesn't make that much sense, but what's the factor that a doctor makes an ET(Estimating Time) in order to don't go so fast or too slow?.

    • @DrGregAsatrian
      @DrGregAsatrian  6 років тому +1

      Roberto Garcia that’s a great question but a super hard one to answer because there are so many variables. Generally I don’t give a realistic estimate (I will give vague ones +/- 6 months) for a few months because everyone is individual and responds to braces differently. I can give a rough estimate from experience but variables such as your bone density impact how fast your teeth move. Also, your hygiene, caring for your braces (not braking brackets), and wearing of rubber bands plays a huge role on how fast your teeth move! Those are just some of the variables but there are so many more ! Hope that helped some =]

    It's so interesting 😂 I have powerchains on my main front 4s, the powerchains work quickly to close the gaps, but I naturally have this very tiny two front teeth space, that opens very easily whenever I brush my teeth, had my previous permanent retainers removed (previous improper ortho treatment unfortunately: Diamond Braces are a complete no-go > having them properly corrected a second time now with another compassionate & honest office), or even when I eat anything lol. I likely need permanently bonded retainers again at the end of my treatment because of these tiny spacing. Cause even with powerchains, the main two like being free.
