Paul just had first two verses and told art and producer it was best he ever did.. and it was amazing, art convinced him to add the last one and it somehow was even better !
Yes, Paul Simon wrote this, and this is the original version. It won a Grammy for best song in 1971. All copies are nice attempts, but nothing will ever touch this.
Art Garfunkel's voice has given it a unique place in the history of music. Other good and well-known artists never came close to Art's rendition of this song.
It always amazes me at how f'd up people can be, yet make something like this. It boggles my mind how beautiful music can be. I don't know if I'd have made it past about 18 without music to relate to.
My wife and I chose this song instead of the traditional here comes the bride as she cam down the aisle. Our exit from the altar was 'Morning has Broken' '
Paul Simon wrote it, Art Garfunkel did almost all the vocal. Released in Jan 1970. The whole album is incredible. I guess this would be called folk/pop, but is classical styled. This is 'art', for a "pop music song", this is at a whole different higher level.
The short guy with the dark hair (Paul Simon) wrote it. His Partner, the Tall guy with the light frizzy hair Art Garfunkel) sang it. Simon & Garfunkel were the best folk/rock duo in history.
My husband asked for this to be played at his funeral. I was dreading hearing it when the time came but then realised it was his message to me that he would always be near. ❤
In a Documentary I saw about the making of the album on the BBC they explained that the final verse didn't exist until the day of the recording. Paul Simon wrote the song to just be a quick album track about friendship, that's all he wanted it to be. The Producer and Art Garfunkel said with an extra verse it would be a number one single. After some time arguing Paul agreed and went to write another verse. Also the song was going to be mainly sung by Paul but while writing the last verse Paul heard Art singing it for rehearsal and told Art he was going to be the main singer when they recorded it. The rest as they say is history......
This is one of the best songs by Simon & Garfunkel. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. You've done a few of them already. Others are "The Boxer", "The 59th Street Bridge Song", "Homeward Bound", "Mrs. Robinson", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
The build from the single piano to “All your dreams are on their way” is genius. One of the many reasons why no cover will equal the original. And one could see how heartfelt your reaction was.
This is the original written lyrics and music by Paul Simon sung by Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon over 50 years ago. It’s an amazing experience. Love this song since it was new. The album is wonderful
I've known this song over 45 years....I still tear up, despite how well I know it. It's not just the words that impact me, it's the vocals/harmony on equal level that just tear me up!
In a way, this gorgeous song marked a point where the innocence of the 1960s ended and the jaded reality and growing distrust of the 1970s began. The Beatles broke up right around this time, The Who made the leap from a top singles band to the powerhouse they became, The Rolling Stones closed the Brian Jones era - replaced by Mick Taylor - where the band echoed The Who's jump into the upper echelon of the greatest bands, and a time when Richard Nixon became US president - an administration rife with corruption and Nixon's prolonging of the Vietnam war so he could get the political power he craved. Bridge Over Troubled Water not only helped to close an album, it closed an era.
I love it when this generation hears our music (of the 1960s and 1970s) and realizes we were spoiled in our day. We had the best singers, songwriters and musicians the world would ever know. The charm of that era cannot be reproduced today.
I react like you did every time I hear this song. As others have said, this is the original version, written by Paul Simon (the shorter guy in the foreground in the photo) and sung by the angelic voice of Art Garfunkel (the guy with the blond afro in the background. Paul Simon provides harmony vocals on the third verse. I tear up every time I hear this song.
I grew up with this song and it still brings me to tears. We all have low, low times, but one friend can help us up. Even when pain is all around. Just magic.
I said for many years that no one but Art Garfunkel (including Paul Simon) could do this song justice, then I heard it covered by Roy Orbison. I feel like a traitor, but Roy aces it as well.
I am 68 now. Was a kid back then with four older music crazed sisters. We did a lot of dancing and singing ! This music and so much other great songs came out when us young people thought the world was about to change for the better. It was inspiring !
Its lovely to see a person from another culture, a different background, connect so purely to this song. Music connects us all. The echo was the words reaching your soul.

Paul Simon paints such magnificent pictures with words, doesn't he? And no, dear; you're not alone. Hearing these guys for the first time gave me goosebumps, too. :)
there is a story. paul mccartney was once asked if there was a song, any song, that he had wished he had written. without hesitation, "bridge over troubled water".
In Boston there was a mobile clinic for "street people". The name and logo on the van was "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Exactly what the song was about.
Something like 55 years since I first heard this album and Art Garfunkel's voice still gives me chills when I hear it. The rest of the album is magnificent as well.
I enjoyed watching you immerse yourself in the music, also you allow us to take the journey with you without stopping and starting. You are not the only one who sings to this song. Well done.:) Yes original and written by Paul Simon
This is gospel. This is church. For the longest time, I thought it was about a lover being there, but it's oh so much bigger and eternal than that. It is the gospel of hope and love. God bless
Fun Fact: Simon & Garfunkel won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for "Bridge over Troubled Water" in 1971. I was 11 when they went on stage to accept the award, and instead of wearing tuxedos, they wore tuxedo T-shirts! Wonderful! This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Chance-Big Country is another favourite, so good, shame that Stuart Adamson died.
