- Today Linus explains why the clock speed and amount of memory or "MB" on your graphics card pretty much shouldn't have any impact on your purchasing decision. He also explains which factors ARE important.

This guy is awesome. Linus has literally taught me everything I know about computers.
Linus, if you see this, just know that you are a boss.
Even for my shallow knowledge about computers, 90% of them are taught my Linus. Goooooooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddddddddddddd damn he's awesome!!
Whos here in 2020 looking at this just like what happened to Linus
Gpu evolved so much in a short period of time.
ALWAYS check the reviews before buying something. That's the only way to go.
1GB vram, gosh it seems like such a long time ago.
+sather58 I'm still on the GTX 570 with 1.2 GB VRAM, too expensive for me to buy a new PC/GPU as a student.
I still run it XD radion hd 6700. Could run the lastest games til 2015 on medium
I'm playing FFXV with an overclocked 6770
So i guess the final message here is, depending on the resolution of the screen you will be playing/working on, base your RAM needs on that. If you have a huge resolution monitor then get a GPU with more RAM, Am i right?
spot on buddy
This man's got it!
Very helpful video - thank you for making and posting this.
I was uncertain about all the different video cards options, and you addressed most of the fundamental questions I had about them.
I now feel more educated. thanks for the video, very helpful!
I'm liking these detail component information videos - upgrading a old pc right now and they are very informative
I know this is old... and you may have done a new video on this topic since then... but... Seriously, no mention of memory bus speed/bandwidth? It is the single-easiest way to predict what kind of performance you can expect out of a particular card. These days to play the most graphically complex games on a single monitor at (at least) 1080p, you need a card with (at minimum) a 256-bit memory bus if you expect any kind of decent frame rate. I honestly can't believe you didn't even MENTION the memory bus.
huge huge 2560x1600 image... oh how far we have gone from 2011.
cool
nice
so true
And still here I am with a GTX 560 Ti by today lol, at least it's still better than iGPU's
Rainbow Dashie dude i only have gt 730 1gb ddr5 you far better than me
what card would be good for connecting to a single plasma tv 42" 1080p? Mostly for photoshop, not gaming. thanks!
Thank you!You just finished off the last of my questions on what to buy.
Linus - is that you :O mahn how changed you are now .. i am amazed .. great job
Not quite as comfortable in his words back then, lol
The black ending :)
Thanks Linus, I was getting so confused with all this stuff, it's much clearer to me now.
Thank you! Great video - as always with you. Thank you.
the days when 1080p was a extremely high resalution
Still is now.
It still is loser
*resolution.
no one needs 4k gaming. 1080p is fine for every single game. Also, if your game doesnt even have the 3840 x 2160 resolution for the textures, you are not seeing 4k.
look at my 970, looks at that card..... it seems so old? but it only been a few years
Very good info. I have a dumb question. Is it possible to upgrade the ram in the video card? If so is it "typical ram" that is used for the motherboard.? What graphx card would you recomend today? I will stop with 3 questions. Thanks, William
Wow 9 years ago and I’m just now learning all this techy stuff and I find it very hopeful at my old age. Good stuff man 👍🏻
6:18 .....WWW what?????
hardwarecanucks
r240j
Thank´s!!!!!
very very high end 1.5GB
Excellent information as always
Thanks for the info. Helps me a lot deciding which version GTX 680 I should buy.
Hi, I am very confuse to the bitrate mentioned in graphic card, what does the bit rate stand for? and is it any different when we load only 1 graphic card with 1 24" monitor? (128 bit vs 384 bit)
Very informative video.... keep making these types.
@Michael Calamohoy Excuse me but what does it mean when you say"gtx cards rely more on CPU"? Are you saying that with nvidia cards you have to get best CPU for some reason?
Hey Linus, what do you think about a video comparing HD6670´s Video Cards? I´m preparing an APU based system, and I don´t know which manufacturer should I buy to.
Does more GPU memory help with anti-aliasing?
You were referring the article at guru3d regarding 680 Lightning control right? However it only applies to 680 Lightnings. (which are darn expensive) He was deciding between a GTX 670 or a 7970.
Sir,can you please tell me whether a gtx 650 ti boost is sufficient for 1366*768 resolution...I have learnt a lot from ur videos so not mentioning that it has "2 GB" of memory....also if u can recommend any other card around this price...pls!! any help will be appreciated...I am mainly concerned about games like watch dogs, gta 5, battlefield 4....
Hi - I have a 3x1080p monitors setup running from a Gforce GTX 670 with 4Gb RAM.
I had a notion of the impotence of RAM in conjunction with a triple monitor setup, but can you tell me how I can find out how much load there are on the frame buffer in games?
I am planning to get another video card for SLI next month. But now I have doubts if 4Gb is enough? It is a 6 mega-pixel resolution - does that mean that I need 6Gb on each card???
hey i have a hd 6570d yea an apu but would it be good to go with a 19 inc or 17 inch monitor?
i have a dell vostro the small version and i dint come with a graphic card so now i have to buy one what do u suggest i should buy
What about when it comes to using 3d rendering and animating software...or video editing? Would it be beneficial to get a 3gig card over a 1gig card? would there be a significant difference?
I like the 1 second of bonus footage at the end!
are you're running super Hidef textures? can you tell me how much does that weight on the gpu? [% of workload]
Does more VRAM then help getting rid of texture pop in? And would relocating some PC ram to my VRAM help decrease the frequency of VRAM?
Hey guys, just a question coming through, i need some advice and your guys opions on this.
So I'm planning on buying a rig (nothing too fancy, like an AMD 6300 and a basic motherboard), but i'm also planning on using at least 2, maybe 3 monitors (all of emwill be 1920*1080). I probably won't be playing like the high end games on full-res, but i do use photoshop and i'd like to edit some music(not at the same time though) now, for the question, should i go with an MSI R9 270, witch has 2gb of memory, or should i go with the MSI R9 270X 4gb addition.
suggestions are very much appreciatedand if you need any more information to help me out, it's not a problem at all.
thanks in advance
can i game using a Asus gtx 670 2gb on a 50 inch LED 1080p 600hertz? what is the recommended settings. (BF3, FC3, etc) also can i run the LED with a 23inch LCD at the same time, both 1080p?
I agree,, I am thinking about building a decent budget gaming rig and am wondering.. Is it a big advantage to have an SLI or crossfire setup with 2 cards if I am going to run on one perhaps 27" 1080p or higher res monitor..? Could getting a crossfire or SLI compatible board and taking advantage of those features be a good way of future proofing to a degree.. of course I know processor is important too for longevity.. anyway. anyone have any suggestions?
My motherboard is a MSI Z87-G41 and it has 1 pci express 3 and other pci express 2.
If I run crossfire with radeon 7970, does it matter that one is not pci 3? thx
How do you decide which brand to buy for any given video card? Say I want a Radeon 7970, I have so many options for different brands to buy. What is the criteria? How does each company alter the factory specs of the cards?
How well will my R9 280X prefrom this following year? Am i on a need to change my GPU?
im bulding my pc with the msi 750 Ti 2gb gddr5 twin frozr in it, is it any good??
can someone tell me what do you call the product that hold the graphics cards in place. I have some I want to put on my shelf but don't want to risk them falling.
duuude unless your card is really big you need a ATX case you don't need it.
Hey guys, im moving of a mac and im considering building my first pc so im a bit of a novice. But i was planning on gettin 3 1080p screens to run of a SINGLE gtx 680 . i wouldn't class myself as a "hardcore gamer" more of a casual one. i would be using engineering programs such as HYSYS but i believe thats more cpu focused. would i be able to run games on fairly high settings and fps 40+? also how much GDDR5 would you recomment? could i get away with 2gb?
Thank you so much it all makes sense now!
I'm new to this so.. i didn't get it xS sorry, at the end what is that we're supposed to look for when buying a gpu?
where can i dawnload moar GBs 4 mai vidya card?
would using a R9 290X for gaming and a Tesla K40 for 3D modeling along side of it be good?
i know it is harder to do the driver loading in that kind of configuration but the Tesla K40 is surpeir in 3D modeling and animation rendering to the R9 290X and can have the load off loaded to it during the times which i would be playing so it is possible to do with the 6500 and 450 graphics cards just i haven't tried it with the newer ones and i am wondering if it would be a good investment to do so as the R9 290X is the best gaming one from what i have read and the Tesla K40 is the best compute one leaving the CPU mostly alone to do other stuff on the computer. drivers do have to be installed separately and there are always bugs and issues but it can be tweaked to work i just wont advise updating the drivers after it is unless there is a major issue.
so um it will also be used for around 5~6 years thus the high end cards in that the K40 will probably be used for even longer. would it run well for gaming? will it render animations well from 3DMAX, Maya, and/or Blender?
also i am pretty sure that the games will not be using the Tesla card so i can just dedicate it to the rendering program.
when it starts to swap back to the hard drive would it be faster if you had a ssd? because it would be able to load this faster? or am i misunderstanding when he says swaping from the hard drive?
Yes it would be faster but it wouldn't matter since whether SSD or HDD is still waaay far slower than the system memory itself let alone the on PCB memory of the graphics card. Your fps will still suffer quite a lot
hey, what do you can you say about tomshardware's video card hierarchy table? I mean is it valid? do you agree with them in general? is it a good reference for people who are trying to choose which card to buy? (link: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html)
tomshardware is a trusted place, same as anandtech you can trust their benchmark, guides, reviews etc
Hi i just got an asus amd hd 7970 directcu ii, is this a very good card and will it last long???
Whats the name of the thing linus is using to put the hardware in?
i have a 600w power supply (80+ bronze) and an sli compatible mobo. could i have a 560ti and 670 in my system? (i dont want to sli, i know they wont work together. i need a second graphics card for complicated reasons)
guys i have 1 7870 oc edition , would there be any point in getting another one if i only play games at 1920 x 1080
can anyone tell me the site he recommends at 6:20? I don't really understand what he said there :(
hey im kind of new at this but if the graphics card has ddr3 ram does that means my computer has to have ddr3 ram to or can my computer have ddr2
This video has more than a year and all the opinions here are totally valid. I love this channel, Linus is awesome, and good stuff people still got fun with this one particulary.
Linus rules!! xD
I have an HD6870 OC Edition. I don't crossfire, I don't run eyefinity, and I am only using a 23-inch IPS monitor and run most games at 1080p. Will it make sense for me to upgrade to an HD7850?
and one r9270x, is it good??? cuz i am building my pc and my gpu is the r9270x with an intel i5 3570k and 8 gigs of ram, is that good for gaming??? like for a budget pc???
Thanks a lot, nice helpful video.
if you've got an integrated graphics card in a desktop, can you add an "external" graphics card?
I need to try it then, but one single graphics card will get lagy in 3 widescreens right? people advise people who like to play games in more than 1 monitor to have at least 2 in sli or crossfire
idk wat to get im looking for a budget card (preferably under $200). I was lookin at Radeon HD 6870, Radeon HD 7770, or geforce GTX 560ti. And whats the difference between GTX 560 and GTX 560ti (Like what can u do with one that you cant do with the other.
THX
Hey U seem 2B in the kno lol Could i get ur advice? im moving of a mac and im considering building my first pc so im a bit of a novice. But i was planning on gettin 3 1080p screens to run of a SINGLE gtx680 . i wouldn't class myself as a "hardcore gamer" more of a casual one. i would be using engineering programs such as HYSYS but i believe thats more cpu focused. would i be able to run games on fairly high settings and fps 40+? also how much GDDR5 would you recommend? could i get away with 2gb?
Hi,
My System Config is :
Intel Core i3
Biostar H55A+
2+4 gb RAM
500 GB of hard disk
Which Graphic Card do you suggest.
I am on a tight budget....
i have a question. does the amount of cuda/stream cores matter?
what website does he recommend again..? i couldnt catch what he said.
i was hoping not to hear that. but i guess i knew id have to.
any suggestions on a 750w?
Should I get a radeon hd 7770 1gb or 2gb or even the gtx 650 ti 1gb or 2gb?
Are two 2gb 770's in SLI enough to run a surround setup? At least until I can build a new skylake rig.
Is it better if I get an amd graphics card if I want to run mult moniters?
plzz sir can i ask u for something cozz im noob gurl.. can i use for my dual asus gtx 680 dcu ii top to 6 monitors..is the ram is enought to support 6 monitors??
I have 2gb RAM in my laptop and Intel core i3 HD graphics. so what should I buy , 8gb RAM or 1-2 GB graphics card.
what Is gpu memory bus width ???
Lol...this is my version of Greek! It was a wonderful, informative video that left me with more questions! All I have to do now is translate the lingo into something I can understand in order to get what I want out of my graphics card performance.
Whats up. Can anyone tell me what happened to asus radeon hd 6950 2gb on the market because I wanted to crossfire but cant buy/find the card anywhere anymore. (im from europe).
can't find the website he's talking about at 6:19... It's "hardware what" ?
Can you make a vid explains graphic card clock speed? Now that I understand the memory I relieve I don't need 3gb for 1 1080p screen. Right? So what do I need to know about clock speed?
any way we can get a refresh of this video? so the memory can be estimated for todays game and maybe triple displays? thanks
So whats better the Titan or the 690? or would the 790 be better?
what would be a good graphics card for a gigabyte ga 78lmt usb3 motherboard
i have 4gb ram and amd fx 8350 which graphics should I buy ........6870 amd radeon or ............ need help
what fan is that (the big sliver thing)
offboard graphics card or dedicated onboard grahpics card? which is better? please reply
Thank you, Linus! My boyfriend has been trying to help me understand computers better, especially because I've just bought my first desktop (custom built)... your videos are really helping! :D
Can someone plz tell we what is better? Asus 7770CU or gtx650TI MSI PE. Im getting i3 3220 but cant decide GPU..
I need help from an expert. I built my system about 3 years ago, so here it is: 750i board, E8400 Duo 3GHz, 4gb DDR2 @400mhz, and BFG GTX 260 OC. I just swapped the GTX for a Radeon 7850 DD. But my games only got a small performance increase. What should I do? I don't really have the money for a whole new setup. Would better RAM help or do I just need to finally upgrade to a quad-core now?
The six core processor was on sale and so far I'm pretty pleased with it. And the reason I went with 16gb was I just wanted it. My main concerns is the graphics card I'm thinking I should of just went with a 660 or 670 nvidia gtx. Really new to PC gaming and the card I have now is decent but I'm looking at newer titles and not sure if it will be able to max those out. Like splinter cell black list and others.
Can someone please tell me if a gtx 550 is enough to run games such as syriym and MW3 on mid or high settinggs???
I'm running amd eyefinity on 1 card eah6850 just because it has the ports although i had to buy a active displayport to vga adapter. I just found out that for that triple monitor resolution you need more ram! so no your video didnt help ME persay but other people do need to know what you just described. one question i have is when you get a superclocked version of a card does the clock speeds stay with the card even if you install diffrent drivers then what is on the disk.
Is 2gb enough to install like 200+ mods on skyrim because apparently each mod you add requires more VRAM, i will be playing on a 1920x1080 res, single monitor and ultra settings. The card I will be using is the Asus nvidia geforce gtx 680 TOP 2gb, if that helps.
@NCIXcom or anyone else that can help me! im looking on getting SLI but not sure what to do i was looking on either getting 2 x Asus HD 7770 2GB "going really cheap" or dig deep into my pockets and get 2x 7870's, Would i get any multi-GPU issues in SLI ? i'll be using a 27inch wide screen with settings of 1920x1080 Resolution, 50000000:1 Contrast Ratio, 300cd/m² Brightness, 2ms Response Time
bro which video card best for sniper ghost warrior 2
Is having a intel hd 4000 graphics card in the laptop good for gaming
please help, my memory clock is 1066, but why on GPU-z only using 500MHZ? i am still confuse how is this mem clock speed works.
where can i get the CASE you have for your PC?
I have 1,200$ to spend on a gpu, which one would you recommend? I thought of a Titan, is that good?
