Fast 70 MPH USA Freight Train With Surprise Twist! California/Nevada Dsert

- We race against an amazingly fast freight train out in the California-Nevada desert! Although perhaps not a foamer or bona fide rail buff or trainspotter..I DO love a cool train! Heading down from Nevada to California, I turned onto one of my fave partially abandoned, desolate sections of old Route 66 out in the California desert just east of the old town of Amboy. We saw a freight train way in the distance heading in the same direction as us...towards Los Angeles. We were watching the train for about 10 miles...and realized it was getting closer and closer to us. Pretty soon....we were right up along side it. I was doin' 70 MPH (120kmh) and that train was keeping right up! I was driving a new GMC Yukon at the time, a rental unit supplied by a buddy of mine who owns a Budget Rental franchise. We could see a crossing coming up and couldn't believe we were going to arrive at exactly the same moment! This wouldn't be a close call or even a near miss...this is the EXACT same time. I thought that was pretty amazing...driving all that way....all that time...just to end up crossing that train precisely at the same moment in time!! I was thinkin', man, it would be a shame to crash up this nice new 2012 GMC Yukon. Not only that....hahaha...it might hurt just a wee bit! In the battle of train vs car or train vs truck...hahaha...train generally wins! ~Kenneth King Bear
Thats a good one. My wife says Oh, my God did he just run into that train. lmao
Hahahaha....well...if it had been a level crossing...I would have hammered that train foe sure!!! My guitar playing days would have been over though....hahahahaha. ~Kenneth
Did I just fall victim to a dad joke on UA-cam
🤣💀
that sound from 0:41 gave me a jumpscare :))))
Man...you will LOVE driving this vast incredible desert! I truly can't get enough of it! So many amazing sights....seemingly out of this world! ~K
^^^@Desert King Travel & Adventure .. I read you Man, it looks great out there ..
I actually got scared I thought you got hit! But it was just a bridge
Excellent timing! Plenty of people fell for it myself included
Hahaha...total 100% fluke on the timing William. Doubt I could ever do it again no matter how many times I tried. All credit to my wife for hanging out the window shooting video of the whole experience! We'll never forget that ride! ~Kenny St. King
Great timing indeed.. I thought you were rolling right into him,, haha
Ya..it was neat to see the big flag on the side and the Union Pacific logo on that freight I caught! The place does have kind of a spooky feel to it. Usually very quiet when we stop there. Always seems to be a breeze blowin' stuff around. Then..there are some creepy looking abandoned and burned out buildings around too. Spooky...but I find it fascinating! Thanks! ~K
Nice crash sound at (0:42) !!! I hope no one with a weak heart was watching !!! that could of been the end !!! Lol
He sure had me fooled! XD
maybe next time you should take some muscle car for a ride in the desert, those feels :)
Well...I ran this one too....hahahaha...just got lucky it was an overhead! ~K
This is where I chased NS 8101.
You had me scared there!
That was funny. Your right timing is everything. Love them train video's ✌ OUT
70mph = 112kph, 75mph = 120kph. Realistically, most car speedos overdo things by up to 4kph. Unless, of course, you were timing the train by your GPS route finder; they're accurate. 62mph, or 100kph is an impressive speed for a heavy freight train to maintain - that was a good video catch!
This area of southern California looks a lot like El Paso Texas....my hometown!!
I remember the 100 mph trips between Alamogordo, NM and El Paso and back. When you had to slow down for the town of Oro Grande, I felt as though I could get out of the car and run alongside......and keep up!
Great video! As a railfan I love to watch the trains rumbling by!
Thanks again.Next trip I will shoot a bunch more rail videos for sure!! ~KJ
Wow that looks pretty cool!
He timed it well
***** He certainly did
Thanks CB!! ~Kenneth
+Desert King Travel & Adventure That part of 66 is rougher than shit, ain't it? Ludlow to Amboy...rough! You wouldn't want to put pennies on those tracks. You'd never find them!
Good to see the Big New Santa Fe is maintaining the AT&SF tradition of running short high speed intermodal trains.
Thanks Buddy...appreciate that! Dang...I have a cool "up close and personal" vid of a graffiti covered Freight passin' this funky old Historic Train Station way out in the California desert. Didn't get a ton of footage of the train...but enough that it's worth posting. I'm RIGHT up beside it...a cool perspective! The Station is a place we often stop at..just because it's so interesting. It's a place called Kelso Depot. Last active way back in '64 I think. I'll try to get that vid up soon! ~K
Maybe we have some here too but yes I can't believe before I see! I realized just we can order here from outside the European Union only about $26,00 priced orders what must include postage next year 2013 without taxes and duties! Now the limit is $55,00! Actually nothing can anymore order here! Also our gov plan tax every miles your car move so soon we can't move here! I don't sure know but the gov plan was put a satellite transmission unit to every car they know where it go & what is speed!~A!
Hi Kenneth! Here I'm never seen train had two transport containers on top of each! Cool! You have there more great system! So spacy place! Cool! I'm played just so I had ten minutes maybe train a new play and then I played it down and because I have no time I closed the amp! I think it could be a cool play! No good no very worse! I must build few preamps but it's so hard to get started and components is hard to collect for the first one! I must be hard! Would you like test something someday? ~A
Yes, been on ET Highway! I have some footage of the trip somewhere on an old analog video recorder. I will try to dig it up and convert it to digital. A very memorable trip! We had a huge 4 prop US Air Force plane fly over us seemingly no more than 2 or 3 hundred feet above. We could feel the rumble of it! Scared hell out of us at first! Saw a herd of wild horses. Visited the town of Rachel etc. I have to find that footage! ~Kenneth
That prop plane might have been a C130 or AC130.
That horn sound was fake (for those of you who don't know much about trains). Here's why:
1 - Engineers only blow the horn when necessary (usually - some of the more friendly ones will give railfans a special honk). No one needs to be warned if you're not even going to affect traffic.
2 - The leading locomotive is a GE ES44AC, which has never had that kind of horn. The horn audio used is from an older, smaller locomotive, perhaps a GP30 or GP9.
haha!! man I was thinking, this guy is suicidal - you got me good! Thanx for the sharing your vid :-)
Really nice catch, well filmed.
Crack up!!! Timing is Everything.. and Bridges come in handy too! Did you add a sound effect of a crash.???
Whoa!!! That is one fast train. I was fooled with that close-up thinking did you just go face to face with the train lol. It was an overpass.:-)
Hahaha...thought I was gonna go one on one with the train hey? Thanks man....take care! ~KJ
What people don't know is engineers are always on the look out for people who are high tailing it with plans to beat them to a crossing. My uncle was an engineer and it's absolutely incredible what morons will do for excitement. He once hit a car travelling at 55-60 MPH and they were doing the same thing as this video only there was no over head bridge *Twist* there were three people in a 77 Trans Am and all three were killed instantly
Great! Ya....I was glad to catch what I did! That funky depot is always just a quick pit stop on our way to Las Vegas from Palm Springs....and I usually only have as long as it takes for my wife to use the restroom. Hahahaha. It was sure neat to see that thing idling when we crossed the multi-track...then it was awesome to watch it power up and pick up speed! ~Ken
If you drive out there, be sure to visit the Amboy Crater. The BNSF (former Santa Fe) tracks are just a short distance away on the opposite side of Route 66.
Hahaha...got lucky with the timing of that! ~K
Oh wow! I would kinda like to drive a train through here.
I was standing by railroad tracks today a train came in at 75mph and from a far distance i was smoke from the side of the train then 5 min later another 70 mph train comes on the same track
Lou Kraska only suppose to go 70. Amtrak is allowed 79mph, except on the north east corridor between boston and D.C they can go 150+. Freight is only allowed 70 mph on class 1 rail, most engine say max speed 70mph on their dash. .. .career railroader....
In nevada now specifically vegas. Bt,/…where is this?🤔🤨🧐🤷♂️
Brother what happens if you run out of gas in the desert its not like a harsh class 1 is gonna stop a 70 MPH freight for a person who is stranded.
Great to hear from you! ~Kenneth
Oh now that's good I was wondering all the while this guys nuts then the payoff very clever good vid thanks for sharing
Yeah, well at 00:41, it sure sounds like you at least kissed the curb with your tires, or something.
Last I knew, GEVos don’t have Nathan P3s
Wow!! No wonder he was movin' right along!! Pretty impressive I can tell you that! Really neat when we got up alongside him! Thanks for that info! ~K
PHEW!
The mad dash to Essex on the National Trails Highway off I-40 to the east.
when you reached the bridge, i acutally thought you ran into the train! It scared me...
DA
NEVER EVER ARGUE WITH 40.000 TON FREIGHT TRAIN DOING 70 MPH. YOU WILL LOSE.
i thought for a second you wrecked, but then... NOPE! i did not see that bridge there
Was that horn added in? I don't think BNSF GEVOs or Dash 9s have that horn.
Ah, get off I-40 and head for Essex and get lucky along he way!
see more than one all the time from Phoenix to San Diego
Funny how stupid BNSF can't even come close to the Santa Fe of the late 60's
Hi Logan. Well...if I'd tried to cut off that train...I think I wudda lost big time! Hahahaha. Take care and thanks! ~Kenneth
Thanks! I still can't get over the timing of it.....something we couldn't have planned! ~K
nice catch
Too bad BNSF doesn’t use that Horn anymore
When you said here comes a crossing I was thinking grade crossing and that creepy noise when you went on the over pass made me think this was lost footage of a crazy rail fan!
hahahaha...a crazed trainspotter......ending it all in dramatic fashion! Thanks and take care! ~Kenneth
***** No problem but in all seriousness that scared the crap outta me.
mondern shadic Ya...I just can't get over the timing of that whole shoot! We'd been seeing that train WAY off in the distance for at least 10 minutes. Then...to arrive at that crossing (fortunately overhead!! ) at the axact same moment ....that was amazing! Sure glad my wife captured it! Take care and thanks! ~Kenneth
***** I sure will.
Kcs railroad stolen railroad, and now there crying out loud
Like
Thank you Andreas! ~Kenneth
Had me going. My heart was pounding! Good one!
Perfect timing !!!!! hahaha
For sure!! I couldn't have timed it better if I tried! Been watching the train way in the distance for well over 5 minutes as we were driving too! We kept getting closer and closer. Crazy! ~Kenneth
Good video Desert King
There wasn't much of a guardrail on that bridge!
Yeah. It's a good thing it was an overhead crossing or he would have been a dead duck
I raced the Amtrak all the way home in 104M/H
AWESOME Thanks for your time taping,,, I live in TEXAS and might not ever get to visit the desert SO you Did A GREAT Job,,, I'm A RETIREE FROM THE MISSOURI KANSAS AND TEXAS,,,, KATY,,,, MKT, RAILROAD
What why Don't you like the desert or you can't go...?
Woah, hold on with the caps there, buddy.
Lmao so funny. The camera zoom then the crashing sound.
I love the Southwest area of the U.S. I guess from my time spent going to the Army's NTC at Fort Irwin. Sleeping in the open air at night when it is cool and you are miles away from man-made light and you can see 20X the stars you normally see. I love how wild and on its own that how part of the country feels. Amazing it has retained that after these last few decades.
You had me for a second. Nice change up, it’s all good
That is one big train !
Ya for sure! They are sure neat to see out in the desert. You can see the whole mile long train coming and going....just steamin' across the vast desert....impressive!! ~Kenneth
Cool bnsf ES44
Victor Aguilarl
Hi and thanks Victor! Ya....awesome unit the ES44. Just an amazing workhorse. ~Kenneth
No, not really. Average train length here in the US is about 100 cars.
Is a fast 70mph train faster than a slow 70mph train?
I had my heart in my mouth 😂
It's near the California and Arizona border.
Soon Albert....probably September or October. Take care. ~Kenneth
Hahaha you got me. I thought for sure you ran into it. I was wondering "why the fuck are you videoing and not stopping?"
Hahahaha...thanks! It was sure an exciting ride being alongside so close. I actually had to pick it up a notch too....that train was doin' at least 70 MPH! ~Kenneth
those type of life events are cool just think about it all the places and things you have done in your life until that moment when in all you have been through that moment in time comes along as if it was written .just think about it if you would have stopped or hesitated a few seconds some where before in your life you may never have had the timing you had at that precise moment in time ...........not to mention you scared the shit out of me thinking you were trying to beat the train. great catch
Hahahaha....I know what you mean! 4 or 5 seconds either way....if we'd stopped somewhere...or even hit an earlier traffic light somewhere....to get to that spot in that exact same moment.....seem as you say "scripted". Amazing! Oh....hahahaha....sorry bout scarin the s*^t outta you! ~KsKing
Nice video King.
God dont joke about getting hit by a train that scared me
0:42 did that train crash into something??
Damn THATS FAST!
))))
That wasn't a crossing............
That was mean timing, I thought you hit something and immediately thought Oh-my-Lord Ha!!! :P] .v (Nmcfmamf) ..
NZ Railfan & Ex Railways ..
Last time was zooming thats why its look like this.
FYI This BNSF Has The TF2 Train Horn
That is how you move freight !
This are train"BNSF"
Hahahahaha....yes....I know!!! ~Kenneth
CHOOOO CHOOO *splat*
Hahahaha....dang close to that Noah....dang close! ~Kenneth
you had about ten feet of clearance, damn close, but I like the way you pulled it off!
Hahaha...it was fun driving keeping up with the train as my wife hung out the window shooting the video footage! What an awesome train! ~Kenneth
I thought he was going to hit the train.
Whoa!!! That is one fast train. I was fooled with that close-up thinking did you just go face to face with the train lol. It was an overpass.:-)
😵 ... I’m dead! Bravo 💯
Great catch
