  • Driving North from Las Vegas we encounter the "Area 51 Circle" as I call it.... way out in the Nevada Desert. A vast area of odd UFO sightings, Military bases, strange quirky towns, abandoned cars and trucks and all manner of weirdness! Totally fascinating! One of the first funky towns we hit along the route is Beatty, Nevada. Entering Beatty from the South is a unique experience. You drive for a hundred miles out of Vegas and see almost nothing but desert....then you come across what looks like a permanent Flea Market. A mile long line of folks in tents, trailers and creaky buildings selling roadside treasures. It's a 7 day a week thing....and it's pretty interesting! This is the south entrance to Beatty! A very old town from the early days of the West....Beatty has a lot of cool heritage buildings and it's also the "gateway to Death Valley". We decided to shoot a video us driving through the town one recent trip. Hope you enjoy the ride along with us! ~Kenneth

Traveled that road back in Feb 1974 with a friend (We were 18 YO) from Vegas to Reno in a CJ5 jeep. (We were from S. Texas).
We were practically the only ones on the road (No speed limit either) and none of that was there- just barren desert and a store. One stretch went about 200 miles and no gas station, no radio stations, no food or water- no stops as I remember.
It was 2 a.m. in the morning and we had headlights behind us suddenly for a few miles, then it looked like they were going to pass us, but instead of going around, the lights disappeared into thin air, right out in the middle of nowhere. Spooked us big time!
The road was much smaller- just two tiny lanes and no paved shoulder.
I do remember I loved the solitude of the desert and stopping on the side and seeing billions of stars with total unbelievable awe!

Billions of stars!! Isn't the sky amazing out in the desert? Ya...you can still really motor along on that highway. We see people goin by us at 90+ MPH quite often! Long stretches of total solitude. ~Kenneth

It's almost as if you're on another planet.
I still have a few pictures of Vegas and some of the desert from then and me hugging a tree when we got to Reno.
My friends Uncle owned "Hanks Radiator Shop" there which I'm sure is gone now.
Went to Pyramid and Lake Tahoe and the snow was piled 10 feet high on the side of the road going up there. Kings Castle was a new building/gambling place.
Memories! Sigh! It was a good time to be alive for sure.

As a Nevada native I find places like this comfortable, not creepy. I love the dry desert smell of towns like Beatty. The cottonwood tufts in the air in May. Where I get freaked out is in places like Orange County; Irvine, Mission Viejo... Reminds me of Stepford Wives or some kind of pod people taking over the Earth with homogenized blandness. But I know that's just me and my reverse snobbery; and I'm sure not gonna make some condescending video about it...

I’m born and raised an South Orange County girl, Laguna, Dana Point, Coto de Caza and Lade a Ranch Area. You are 100% right it’s a steford wives type of place and I have to admit I did grow up in a bubble, South Orange County is all I’ve ever known besides Scottsdale and Marana Arizona. I’ve never been outside of cities or towns that were not some sort of resort living, with that being said and now my children in college and my husband a football coach we are traveling a lot and I now have seen what it’s like in small towns. I now live in the country in Central California, because that’s where his job took him to coach college, although a culture shock at first to both of us, I have to admit the small town life has lots and lots of advantages. The people here are amazing, no hustle or bustle they move slow (which still drives me crazy coming from down south) but I’m glad I’ve gotten the chance to see what it’s like to live outside of Orange County. I still have to learn to relax a little to enjoy the country life, but I really really do miss the smell of the Ocean at night, the sounds of the waves crashing onto the shore, the late night walks at the harbor, my heart misses that life but my heart is also starting to slowly enjoy the country. Life is an adventure and with my husband being a coach and a coaches career is never stable unless you keep winning, has him always on the lookout for other positions that may pop up in some unusual place, town or city. I’m enjoying learning and living in different parts of the state of California and Arizona and now just bought in Texas (don’t live there though), and looking forward to seeing where college coaching takes us one day next. Cheers to small town life and to the big cities as well ❤️

Running through parts of TENNESSEE is what the Indians called the 'trail of tears because they where chased out by the white-man.But over the last ten years a new trail has opened up and its known as 'the freedom road] because of all the poor family's who traveled it to get to KY to escape the abuse by tennessee police. The road runs beside I65 north and its runs north and south and some go own to INDIANA but most stay in KY. Their was a sign as you cross over from tennessee into KY that read ,WELCOME TENNESSEANS YOUR MISERY AND SUFFERING ENDS HERE but it was taken down by officials after TENNESSEE raised hell about it.As you travel through tennessee you will see small deserted towns completely abandoned by the poor people and when they left the towns dried up the rich and the police had no more slaves to work cheaply and no one to abuse so now everything is empty .' Tennessee officials trying not to lose face told a reporter from CNN that people left because of no jobs they wouldn't admit the truth and say because of the Violent and brutal tennessee police. If you drive down I65 north or going own I65 south from Indian or Nashville to Indianapolis you will see the road.

Beatty has become a bit less so through the years...but man...back in the mid 1980's when we first started touring the desert....Beatty was plenty creepy....certainly at night. Fascinating either way! Take care and hope you have a great week. ~KsKing

***** Dear Desert King- I wanted to pass a few things onto you if I may: I love UA-cam but I have found that over a period of time, I'd end watching something where a) I had no idea how i got there and b) I watched something I wish I had not. I will always be a fan of UA-cam but I have been spending a considerable amount of time watching TEDTalks (www.ted.com) These Conferences) are basically credible scientists and humanitarians who get up and share real life stories on every subject imaginable. It is free-the organization is non-profit. Personally, I have learned SO MUCH and "been" to far corners of the world, I never will probably get to visit in person. Please check it out.- you will be so glad you did and will walk away NOT feeling awful - maybe a little startlingly enlightened but you are more in control. Also, the education level of people you share comments with is on a whole other level -more intelligent and diplomatic. Also, you can become a part of helping by participating in TEDTalks in many different ways. and the content to watch (sorry to say) leaves UA-cam in the dust. Please check out TEDTalks- I think you will feel as I did when I found it- grateful!
I also see you are in the travel industry-correct? I just happen to have a few videos on my UA-cam channel that as a travel professional, you might like to take a look at. My Mother lives in Bullhead City, AZ (Laughlin Area) and I have a video about the area. Actually, the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce saw it and they actually thanked me for uploading it. I have another video showing and telling the history of Ely, Nevada as well MYSELF being a Las Vegas resident, I have uploaded some good videos that highlight some of our most hottest tourist attractions; 2 of them specifically are the High Roller Observation Wheel and the Stratosphere. You might find them useful or at the very least-entertaining. Get back to me if you feel inclined, I'd be interested in knowing your take on TEDTalks. ;-) Take Care! .

Run down towns, abandoned cars, creepy abandoned buildings and military bases. You have just discribed the entire American Southwest. Also, it never ceased to amaze me. during my years in the military that every time we sent some small convoy from one base to another to send some unit to do a training rotation. Every whacked out libertarian extremist within 50 miles would have a freekin fit and be totally convinced that it was a sign that the government was about to declare martial law. Not just sick but for a group of people who constantly brag about how they are the only true patriots it is and was insulting to both active duty and vets.

Just so you know , THIS is how ALL of America’s little towns used to be before the Interstate. That’s why the highways went right through the middle of them. They built la highway, an intersection and the town built up there. Residents used the traffic to sell things to make a living, as there was no Internet either. A lot of small towns that died off was because the Interstate built farther out and took away that business.

That was cool. Next time through maybe stop at some of the more interesting roadside flea markets. I'd like to see some of the strange things that turn up in little out of the way places like that.
One day on a back road in the mountains of East Tennessee I stopped at a little roadside antique/junk store. In the back, locked inside an old glass case, I found several real, not fake, WWII German Army Afrika Corp. uniform insignia. I imagine some kid from the area wound up in Africa fighting the Nazi German army and picked up a few souvenirs that he could carry in his pockets. After coming home the items probably got displayed for a while and then put away to be forgotten about. Then the guy grows old, passes away and all his Earthly possessions are cast to winds, his WWII souvenirs winding up in a little unheard of backwoods junk store until I found them. Now they sit tucked away in my collectable box awaiting my fall in which I'm sure they will once again wind up in some unusual place where some other "lucky" person will find them.

I can see why you turned off ratings. I love little towns that have not lost their human character with a bunch of corporate stores that you can find anywhere in North America.
I hate it when every small town you pass through has the same stores, same chain restaurants, laid out in the same way as the next ten little towns. Like many here, I find Arbies and Subway towns creepy, with little of interest in them. Almost all of the original local stores and businesses disappear once the corporate crap takes over.
Those places were interesting, not creepy, at all. For me, those interesting little towns were the best part of driving through the deserts. I have met a lot of unique interesting individuals who live there, as well. People who would pick up on your attitude, instantly. Believe it or not, they find folks who think like you to be real creepy.
I guess creepy is in the eye of the beholder. You use the term "creepy" as click bait, on may of your videos.
Fortunately, there are others with a better attitude. I am from hillbilly country. There was nothing hillbilly about the pu truck with the water barrels. Your sense of humour sucks.

Just to let those who don't visit or haven't visited Nevada that these tiny towns are all alike and all over the place. All the old cars and broken down vehicles are on the property and cannot be hidden in the woods like on the East Coast. Also, in the woods are sketchy trailer parks, abandoned buildings and plain old garbage. Those "flea Market" stands are there because people come to look at Area 51 and they know they can get your attention to buy something. Next time, to make it look weirder, you better take out the Subway and make sure not to get the Denny's on the video.... that gave it away. Proud Nevadan from Fallon Nevada..... stuck here in PA, in the woods with the trailers, garbage and even secret military installations

That place has a Subway? Good grief, I can only imagine what types of visitors they get in there. Imagine a disguised alien going in there and saying 'I want a ham and cheese footlong with extra green peppers and a chocolate chip cookie'. Seriously be careful who you serve to. Can aliens even eat our food?
For all they know, they might get an alien's order wrong and will end up getting shot at with a laser gun, but then again they'd be to civilized for that, aliens I mean. They'd probably be polite about it and overlook it since they know that they are superior and would forgive the blunderings of a lesser spieces then they. I say these things cause living next to a place like Area 51 would likely get bombarded by people from other planets. I'd hate to anger an alien by accident. ;)
