Marker Proof & Water Proof drawing inks comparison

- In this video I compare different dipping inks / drawing inks to see which ones are marker proof / resistant and which ones are water proof / resistant. The inks I use in this test are:
Daler & Rowney FW acrylic black ink
Liquitex acrylic black ink
Kaimei manga ink
Kuretake Manga ink
Kuretake Zig cartoonist ink
Jacksons indian ink
I used a calligraphy / dip pen to draw out the lines and a brush to put a larger blob of ink on the page. The idea of this video was to help people who search for things such as which drawing inks are marker proof , for example which ones would be good to use with copic markers, and again, which would would be good to use with watercolor paints.

From the video it seems like Liquitex and Jackson's are the best if you're doing a picture that would have both alcohol based markers and watercolors. One brand I use a lot for that purpose is Speedball (their Super Black ink) though it does smudge a bit with both markers and water but not any worse than a Micron pen (people often say they're copic proof and waterproof but they're just resistant)
Thank you for the comment! I don't think I have used the brand Speedball before, but the name does ring a bell so I might have to check it out. Microns aren't perfect, but they're pretty good, so if it's comparable that would be great!

How long did you wait before testing? For true results a minimum of 24 hours is recommended. Acrylic ink is essentially acrylic paint and will only bleed if it’s not fully dry, as acrylic polymer is waterproof. While some may be touch dry, they probably weren’t fully dry.
Hey thanks, I put the ink down on a Saturday and tested them on Sunday, but I have just tested it again now on the acrylic inks ( 4 days later ) and it still smudged in the same way.
learningasidraw Did it smudge with the water four days later or just the markers? I expect some movement with alcohol, but not water. I have both FW and Liquitex acrylic inks - and get no smudge whatsoever with water. I’ve even used it outside in rainy UK. Acrylic ink isn’t a true ink, it’s only an ink like consistency and has exactly the same ingredients as as acrylic paint - its pigment suspended in acrylic polymer and it should definitely be waterproof when dry just like acrylics are. I would raise the issue with both liquitex and DR re movement with water once dry, something is definitely not right there. Liquitex themselves state this about their acrylic ink “Ultra-fluid acrylic with lightfast, artist-quality pigments. No dyes. No fade. Just pure, permanent color. And like all acrylics, it dries quickly and permanently, with no smudging or bleeding when rewetted or layered.” DR also state similar.
@@Kyomiibrown That was just the water I tested that time I mean. But wow I didn't know all that, that does seem odd then! It was the big blob of ink that I tested it on which is the thickest / heaviest layer of ink I used. Maybe I should test another brand of acrylic inks to be on the safe side too, if you have any suggestions? Unless it's also to do with the paper I used ( Bristol board ) Although I would think that would be pretty good quality, I might do the same test on watercolour paper too see if that makes any difference. learningasidraw For a waterproof ink, you can’t go wrong with ‘Platinum carbon ink’ and for marker and waterproof the ready made pen inks are probably best such as the copic multi liner, and as the copic multi liners are refillable, you should be able to buy the copic multi liner ink on it’s own ;) Liquitex acrylic ink is better than DR IMHO, and paper can make a difference. Do your tests on 100% cotton watercolour paper if you can leaving 24 hours to dry. I say 100% cotton as cellulose paper tends to allow paint/inks to float on the surface which makes them more moveable even after drying. If you only have cellulose though, give it a try.
@@SketchedbySte It worked as expected. The top layer dries fast and then seals in some water. That bit of water takes a long time to evaporate and as long as it's there it keeps some of the pigment/acrylic active. A blow dryer equivalent (heat setting) gets rid of it. Workaround for it is to just be careful.
I think alcohol breaks the binding and yoinks some of the pigments no matter how long it had time to dry. You can use it to "blend" acrylics and/or create a more solid fill with acrylics when you don't feel like doing 2-3 layers.
