    I don’t know if anyone else discovered this; but if I do white lines in coloring pencil first, then go over in white ink, it looks immaculate. No bleeding or mixing of colors and the lines look sharp af

    Dr. P H Martin has two white ink/paints: This Bleedproof, and Pen White. Pen White is the more dilute one that will compete well with other products in this test (though you may still find yourself regularly adding a bit of water). Bleedproof is like a concentrate, which is thick enough to use as a correction fluid or Whiteout. But you can certainly use Bleedproof as an ink-with-dip-pen or paint-with-brush (e.g. for linework or adding highlights), if you dilute it first.

      I'm a calligrapher and use the Bleed Proof White often on darker/pigmented papers, with both broad-edge and pointed pen work. I also add a drop of ox gall liquid to it to keep it flowing through the nib.

  • @PumpkinPails
    @PumpkinPails 5 років тому +80

    The PH Martin's definitely works best if you add a few drops of distilled water and stir it. You can just add a few drops at the top and kind of create a top layer of fluid ink and keep the bottom the regular consistency.

      I formerly refered to this as ink as well but was recently informed it's actually a form of very thick gouache-like paint. Yes to the added water, I've had my jar for quite a while and love it for highlights know my watercolor paintings. I just add the needed any of water each time.

      @Artastinoble Who sells it as ink? Where on the bottle does it call it ink??
      The name of the product is Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleedproof White. The Dr. Ph website specifically states, "Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleedproof White is an opaque watercolor for covering dye colors, markers, and designer colors. It is not intended for mixing. Comes in a 1.0 oz (30 ml) glass jar."

    • @MummyBrown

      @Artastinoble Yea, dude. That is akin to gouache. Gouache is an opaque watercolor.

    Thanks for the in-depth review. I actually (mostly) like the Dr. Ph Martin bleed proof white. I water it down and use it with my dip pen, especially over watercolor, and haven't had any problems with it over w/c. However, I did use it in an art journal on top of acrylic paint. After waiting several hours for the ink to dry, I closed the journal. The "bleed proof" ink caused the pages to stick together and it caused the acrylic to bleed through to the reverse of the page, wrecking the artwork on the reverse.
    My issue with the Uni-ball pens is that they are a total waste of money because they dry out when fully capped and stored on their side for even a couple of weeks.

  • @augustusleo6704
    @augustusleo6704 4 роки тому +13

    The dr ph Martin’s bleed proof white is really good, really pigmented, it comes in a “condensed” form, kinda in a gauche formula? It’s def best used with a brush, which means you can water it down, and it won’t really lose any opacity. It dries down very quickly, sometimes if you left it for too long it turns solid, but you can very easily reactivate it with water, it fully revives. Another very good thing about it is that sometimes with white inks, it dries down shiny, or textured, but the bleed proof white DOENT DO THAT!!! I picked it up in school taking fashion illustration, my teacher recommended it and it definitely changed my whole entire life!

    • @augustusleo6704
      @augustusleo6704 4 роки тому +2

      Oh also, sometimes you wanna mix your white ink into your watercolor, but you can’t do that with acrylic inks like you can with bleed proof white!! Just get a fine tip brush. It’s better to use a brush anyways, you get more control and your lines are tapered!

    I'm surprised you didn't choose the W&N Drawing Ink. It worked well on toned paper and over watercolor, had great opacity, and only had slight issues with bleeding. I think I was with you up to the very end. I loved the video, though. It was well done!

  • @faeleia
    @faeleia 5 років тому +22

    Bleedproof white, needs to be diluted for dip pen. The ink can be diluted to produce extremely fine hairlines (even for mapping nibs) that I love for calligraphy. It is better than the rest of the inks imo, but it's not smudge proof white, nor is it water proof.
    (when loading inks, it's better to make sure the hole in the nib is covered with ink to make sure enough is on, give it a light shake to dispense any excess ink, then write with nib. I'm not sure what nib you are using, but it seems to be very large, so you probably have to dip a bit further to cover the hole. As with any acrylic ink, the sediments tend to sink pretty fast, so to get the highest pigment per dip you can try using a brush to stir it around, then load the nib with the brush. it's tedious! lol)

      Thanks! I have just started using

    Oh hey! Like a year ago I did a vid where I tested a whole buttload of pens and it's AWESOME seeing that there's verrrrrrry little overlap between our two. Largely because you did those potted inks, but some of your pens are ones I haven't even seen before! Way cool that you've now introduced me to more materials than I've seen-the internet is great!
    Back in the day, I used to use that PH martin's guy when I basically only did black and white inking stuff and didn't also use watercolors. One thing I really love about your tests is that when they don't perform awesome, you don't say THIS IS A PIECE OF TRASH, you give it the benefit of the doubt and attempt to adjust your methods, like using the brush for PH Martin's and re-shaking the FW. Really, really appreciate your style of testing and that you took the time to do such a varied batch of stuff.
    If you do this test again, an addition you may want to try is finding more specific pigment watercolor that tends to blend with the inks randomly (like your blue one did), for me, I usually use Sennelier's Opera Rose, which is actually the reason I did my big test showdown because I love that color and love white pens and didn't know what to do when my ol' faithful uniball pen kept pinkifying on all my pieces. I'd like to know specifically what that blue was so I can add it to my future trials, if you still remember it!

  • @johnrodgers7877
    @johnrodgers7877 3 роки тому +5

    T dr PH Martins is original use by designers and cartoonists to correct ink work and is intended to be used with a brush diluted to a suitable con sistancy. I hasve used it for many years for my illustration and cartoon work. It is bleed proof so you can work over it again once it is dried. Finally, you have to ensure it is dried well , before working over it again.

    Absolutely invaluable. Personally, I've had trouble with FW in the last several years, finding the ink less opaque for correcting black and white comics pages than I'd prefer. I actually find the PH Martins very useful for deleting large blotches of spilled ink, but not ideal for fine lines.Thanks for this!

    fyi, Dr Martin's Bleedoroof White is not an ink, it's an opaque watercolor generally used for correcting ink drawings. It is made to be used with a brush and far too thick to be used as an ink. Also, as it is a watercolor, though dry, it can be reactivated with water or ink.

    Great video. Probably the most important thing to keep in mind is what the ink is made of will have a huge effect on what's already on paper. If you use water-based ink on top of watercolor, it will pick up the watercolor and mess up your artwork. So always make sure you check the chemical composition of what you're getting. Also anything thats solvent based, like alcohol inks might screw up an acrylic illustration. Check the labels and always test it out on a scrap piece of paper before you commit 👍

      From experience, lots of the the inks won’t like other materials being put on top of them and if they do the material reacts differently where the ink is. You might be better off with something like watercolour ground. It’s basically watercolour gesso but it mimics paper better.

    I don't know why but I don't like using disposable pens. They only hold 2ml of ink at best and they're constantly running out so you have to buy loads. I only use black and white pen for art. For colour, I use acrylic paint (or ink) but I'll apply it with a fine brush, not a pen.
    For black I use black acrylic ink in a dipping pen or permanent (lightfast) black in a fountain pen or else I use a brushpen loaded with Indian ink. For white, I use a dipping pen. I've tried paint markers but those are only good with a broad tip, otherwise they gunk up.

    Uniball Signos are a huge disappointment. Always the tip will dry up, clog up long before they are out of ink. I live in an extremely dry climate and feel it must be that as so many others rave about them. I have spent so much on new ones to no avail. I use the extra fine tip Sharpie water based paint pen and it give far better coverage than your test version. It has never been messy for me, but the extra fine tip ones are not easy to find.

    I've always been a fan of the Uniball pens generally, they are really nice writing pens and are also very comfortable to use. btw, the only one I think you were missing from this is the liquid correction pens as they can be pretty good for this purpose, also,a slight improvement you could have made with this comparison would have been to have used a brush on all the bottle inks as opposed to just the one brand.

    Is there any permanent marker white ink available? plz ping me

      No because permanent markers use a translucent type of ink which just wouldn’t work in white. The closest you’ll get to that type of product would be a paint marker.

    The pH Martin is not really an ink. It is an opaque watercolor more like gouache

    Pébéo white pen is as bad as Pilot. My favourite is Molotow One4All pens. But I don't know how it perform on water colour. I only do acrylic.

      I don't think they are necessarily paints, but my terminology might be off. It's not an ink in the way of a dye, that indeed is impossible with white. White ink is a suspension of white pigment.
      It is in a lot of ink brands different in performance from their other inks, I know that Winsor and Newton at least do mention that their silver, gold and white are different, not sure about other brands.

    I have the pilot pen and the result is the same, it’s a useless product, waste of money!

    It is not too helpful when you only treat premium white out as opposed to the most available.
