    I listened to this talk a month ago and I was impressed by how well-articulated and comprehensive it is. I am currently learning more about Decision Making and I am fascinated by the acute intersections between this talk and Kahneman's work. In essence, being brilliant every day mandates improving our System 2 thinking which is often lazy and limited. The steps Dr. Alan Watkins has described can regulate the physiological changes we experience when we are faced with challenging problems, increase our efficiency, and improve our results. Of course, It all takes awareness, practice, and time to master.

    *Summary:* key = Heart Rate Variability
    Chain of motivations for action:
    Improving performance => behavioural change => Thought change => Feelings change => Emotional change => physiological change
    (Feelings are different to emotions)
    Therefore, consistent performance is reliant on physiological control.
    -Measure of physiological effects is 'heart rate variability'. Chaotic variability causes cortical inhibition, drastically reducing performance.

  • @carlosmbaziira4137
    @carlosmbaziira4137 5 років тому +41

    Dr Watkins is spot on. If I could describe it in other words, its a form of inner standing where you go within yourself and actually start to observe all your emotions and feelings. I dont know how you flick the button on but there is a button. And once you do? your performance and analytical thinking dramatically rises. I am experiencing this everyday, but did not think it was a process until I came across this talk. But my ability to do absolutely anything I set my mind to has actually improved. Maybe there is something to this theory 😊👌

      Language and Organs share brain areas. This is why when Neil heard some specific words, his heart rate started to change. We can control our organs by removing Anxiety created by everyday events, through re-defining the meaning of these events using logic - what do they mean? is there any danger? how should I plan to overcome dangers and be safe? what skills should I Improve? What lessons do I need to learn? How can I share my experiences with others in a coherent language?

    A theoretic talk that makes your feeling and communication more complex. You can change you state in the blink of an eye by focusing on what you want and taking action.

    • @YoAddicts
      @YoAddicts 8 років тому +2

      +Vikas Chopra I actually agreed with you from the beginning, but then I watched the second half of the video. I thought you were right cause there's so many things we can't change in this world that what matters is that we just have to take the first step and do it. My friend, though, I personally believe that only applies to short-term development. What drove me to come here in the first place was because I was finding the reason of why we do what we do. I needed this talk badly cause my emotions were stopping me from progressing lately. I am in my 20s

    • @vikas31chopra16
      @vikas31chopra16 8 років тому +2

      The truth is simple and it's sets you free from the complexities in life. If the talk did you good then that's to your benefit. I found it ambiguous and unhelpful. Please read my next statement carefully.
      We are all driven by pain and pleasure and your emotions are linked to this fact. Asking effective questions and mind mastery is the second key to success. What do you really want?

    • @YoAddicts
      @YoAddicts 8 років тому +1

      Vikas31 Chopra Thank you, friend. I don't know what I want yet, but I am aware of what I should be looking for to do great work. I need to look for inspiration in what I do (similar to a painter being fascinated by art).

    Great talk! The coherence he speaks of is referred to in yoga as alignment of thought/ feeling/ word/ action to function optimally and with ease (as opposed to incoherent/misaligned states that may lead to dis-ease).

    I will tell you my experience with quitting smoking. When I was a smoker I'd enjoy it, but one thing that bugged the hell out of me was the smell. I am almost fanatically focused on cleanliness, so my quitting smoking became not a focus on quitting smoking, but a focus on how much I hated the smell of tabacco in my clothes, hands and especially my mouth. Focusing on that made me so sick and angry at the thought of smoking that quitting became just the by-product of my heightened aversion to it.

    Wow, that’s the most interesting and important TEDX talk I have heard on UA-cam for ages, brilliant in fact. So much relatable stuff about what, why and how the psychological and physiological processes are affecting virtually every aspect of the living activity of consciousness and behaviour, physically and mentally every minute of the waking state and probably also the resting/sleeping states.
    Alan has a great grip on what he’s putting forward verbally in quite a succinct and quirky manner, backed up by the old butchers paper hand written diagrams that are very effective. I would score his presentations at 98%, taking 2% off for the accent. I am looking forward to viewing part 2 most enthusiastically, Cheers

    So it is really the raw emotion that you have to work on. Apply that approach to what you want to get/do/be and you'll get your goal as a by-product. And indeed this is the way, because sometimes you really have to stop thinking about what you want to quit, as it is with smoking. Focusing on quitting smoking will only make you want to smoke some more.
    I hope this helps.
